damn. 7500 DKK is not that bad. I have seen the current on for 10000 DKK in stores.

question; if you game on this - it says in the Notebookcheck review that it goes to 90c after minutes of gaming with a gpu intensive game.

what about hours afterwards? will it down throttle itself and make games unplayable?

I am thinking about games like guild wars 2 that will die performance wise if the cpu clocks itself down to cool the system.

and if already reaches 90 degrees after mere minutes, imagine playing a game for hours?

95 degrees for GPU. thats not good.

but then again, they did a stress test.. will gaming reach these temps? and after time - a year after you bought it, when some dust gets through the vents(unavoidable) and the ventilation is not AS good, then what?

I was surprised that an i5 would become so hot as well.

I really want the UX31A or the UX32VD. But if I get the 31A, I gotta get it with the 256GB SSD since it's not expandable. 128GB just wouldn't be enough for me. I'm just afraid of the cost of that and the poor performance of the U100 I've heard about.

On the other hand, the UX32VD is supposedly expandable and I would just swap the HDD with a good performing SSD I can likely find cheaper somewhere. Plus I'd have the benefit of the dedicated Nvidia GPU. On the other hand, it's not unibody like the UX31A and has a plastic(?) bottom tray. From the looks of it though, it's almost the same and just slightly thicker.

    Tough choice..

They did say their stress test caused the CPU to throttle and cool off. But they reported that after an hour of gaming, the CPU did not run into this issue:

In daily use, the surface temperatures should remain markedly lower though, since full utilization of CPU and GPU will only occur for short periods of time, even during the use of complex software like Video editing or gaming. After one hour of Anno 2070, surface temperatures remained narrowly below those of the stress test, with a maximum of roughly 47°C near the exhausts.

It's still quite hot, but playable I suppose.

Yeah tell me about the wait is killing me as well. I am waiting on the UX32VD. One thing I admire about Apple and like is that when they announce a product they have a launch date with it. Why can't other companies do the same thing.Anyone have an idea as to when the UX32VD will be released in the U.S?

I'm a little worried since I don't see the UX32VD on the global site, but I do see the UX31A. But the fact that we're seeing more and more hands ons of both devices should say they're close. I've heard various sources say June, so I'm not too worried.

Either way, I'd like to wait one more week and see what Apple will unveil at least since I've seen showings from everyone else. Rumor is they might not even have a retina display and if they do, it'll just be their 15" model. But that's all speculation. But I think Asus might just have the 13" display on the market. :)

As a side note, I was told to hear Will.I.Am's latest track, so I watched the video out of convenience. You might all recognize the device that's in the video (a lot too). ;)

So the UX32VD might be not be released in the U.S? Or might take longer to reach over here...I would assume the release date should be soon, since reviews are starting to come in.

Can anyone confirm if Anandtech is saying is true?

    You can get a 2GB On-board + 2gb or 4gb for a total of either 6GB of 4GB RAM?

I know Notebookcheck's review shows 6GB of Ram with the Core i5. I'm expecting 4GB or 6GB of Ram to be standard, probably closer to 4GB just like the UX31A. My guess is the 2GB is for the low end Zenbook that costs $799

I'm not saying either, but just pointed out how it was strange the UX32VD wasn't on the site. I'm pretty sure it'll come out in the US too. I hope so! That's the one I'm leaning towards.

I can definitely see that. The UX21A being shown off is somewhat of a concept but I think it's realistic to expect it around the Windows 8 launch in Q4.

I am struggling to choose between the UX32VD and the new Sony S Series 13" Premium laptop. On the one hand the Asus has aesthetics, screen quality and size/weight on it's side, but the Sony has the 640M LE Kepler GPU (I don't mind that the Sony is 1600x900 - I'm more likely to be able to play games at native res than on the Asus).

    Hmmm.

I wish I could reliably understand the difference in graphic horsepower between the 620M and the 640M LE...Notebookcheck suggests the 620M averages c.7,500 in 3d06, while the 640M LE hits about 10,000 in 3d06. That's not an insubstantial (c.33%) difference.

    Petrov.

I'm sure it's poor form to quote myself, but I'd like to take me to task. I did a bit more digging on the benchmarks shown on notebook check, and the 620M benchmark of 7.5k points in 3d06 was at 1280x1024 (about 1.3m pixels), whereas the 640M LE benchmarks were at either 1366x768 or 1024x768.

When you gross up/down the 640M LE performance for 1.3m pixels being pushed, a "pro forma" 3d06 score for the 640M LE would be around 6.8k - a *lot* worse than what I'd suggested above.

Notwithstanding that 3d06 is not a perfect benchmark, it's not bad. Is my logic correct?

    Petrov.

3D06 is normalized to the same conditions(resolution and graphics settings) for each laptop. So I believe the 640 LE is stronger than the 620M. I am also debating about the Sony s13p and the zenbook ux32vd, except my main concern is that the zenbook produced a lot of heat during the notebookcheck review, so since the Sony has a stronger GPU, it should preduce more heat than the zenbook under load and that might cause throttling to the CPU or damage something inside the laptop

Interesting that Asus' spec page says SataIII SSD for the UX32 prime. Although on the main page it also says "uses hard drive/SSD hybrid storage", which is what was reviewed at notebookcheck.

It has to be wrong. The asus site says it has 2 USB 3.0 ports but it has 3 total (2 on one side and a third on the other). So maybe someone copy pasted some info from the ux31A and didn't change the rest yet

Release seems even closer now judging by the site update. Still can't decide between the UX32VD or UX31A. It doesn't help that they can't get the spec sheets right.

I hope we can get confirmation of which models have swappable RAM and/or SSD/HDD and which don't.

Since the UX32VD uses 2GB of onboard memory, I'd assume that you'd have to use 1 DIMM of 8GB to upgrade, giving you 10GB total. No idea whether that's supported.

10 would be sweet, but more than likely it supports 8 max, meaning you'd need to put a 6gb dimm in there.

The 31 in the name ux31A or ux31E represents the laptop shape. In this case it is a unibody shape, which I think is also called a tear drop shape when lookin at the laptop from the side.

The 32 in the name ux32A or ux32vd represents the clamshell shape of the laptop which means it is slightly thicker at the narrow end of the ux31 series. However with this added size, you get a full size hdmi port and a third USB 3.0 port. The ux31 series has a mini hdmi port and 2 USB 3.0 ports, while the ux32 series has a full hdmi port and a total of 3 USB 3.0 ports.

The ux32 weights a little more than the ux31 series, maybe 0.2 or 0.3 more lbs.

The A in the series means it has the option of a 1920 x 1080 IPS screen, while the VD means it has a 620m graphics card.

The ux32A I am a bit confused on. Im not sure if it has SSD or HDD or if it uses the 620m or integrated. I think it has intergrated hd 4000 and a hybrid hhd with 32gb SSD.

The ux32A is the cheapest model entry option at $799 with a 1366 x 768 EWV(extra wide view angles, meaning it's a better TN monitor) and core i3. With I think 320HDD and 32GB ssd, hd 4000 graphics

    UX31A entry is 1920 x 1080 IPS, core i5, 128 ssd, hd4000 graphics, $1050 or $1100.

    Ux32vd entry is 1920 x 1080 IPS, core i5, 500HDD, 32SSD, 620M GPU, $1299

That is what I think, i could be wrong though

Damn, they're still using the POS SanDisk U100 SSD (and now even the 128GB ADATA Sandforce is gone!)... biggest weakness in this machine (froze 3 times while writing this post, thanks to the wonderful SSD performance).

Nice find. And they'll reimburse you the $15 that it costs to upgrade to Windows 8 with a Visa gift card.

Now if only Amazon US will get it so I can order it before the stupid Texas state tax kicks in on July 1st.
