^^^ OK that's what I thought... Downloading the latest chipset drivers from Asus site right now... I'm kinda pissed because my k53ta has been givin me a lot of trouble since I bought it :(
I have no idea why it performs so bad in games either.. :(

I hope my fresh install of Windows 7 have fixed this...

How big of an improvement in crossfire gaming is adding a second stick of 4GB RAM? I know the OP benchmark results show a huge gain, but, real world?

At this stage, many of these questions have been answered. Take some time and read the thread.

The questions at this point are getting repetitive. Thanks for being a good citizen.

Short asnwer: Large benefit, excellent cost/performance investment.

Also, as a random aside, I got sucked briefly in World of Warcraft a few days ago and this laptop runs it fantastic. I know that's not saying much these days, but I was running at my nor mal desktop settings at the same framerates. A lot of people still play WoW so having something that can play it for a couple of hours on an airplane for $450 is pretty wizard.

edit: n/m it will be worth it to upgrade.

edit2: Running Prime95+Kombuster with "xtreme" DX11 burn in at the same time, CPU @ 2.2 / 1.125v, GPU @ 700/1050, temps top out at 89 C. Playing Lost Cause 2 at these specs also had temps to 83 C or so...any less voltage, Prime fails core 3.

I dunno how some people run 2.6 or 2.8 without hitting 95+ and no throttle.

edit3: One poster was saying crossfire in Deus Ex HR boosted FPS. I confirmed, in FRAPS, it does, by 10fps or so... However, just subjective experience, movement results in what I assume is microstutter. Disabling crossfire has a lower FPS, but no stutter, so to my eyes it seems smoother despite the FPS hit.

I was not asking a question so your "no" answer is irrelevant. Dude...I was simply just saying...second gen i7...600 dollars. That's amazing.

EXACTLY! It could not have been said any better. There is a FPS gain but it seems the rendering between the two GPU's has some "inconsistencies" so to speak. I also observed screen tearing in crossfire both with vsync on and off. Maybe if you were to hook this up to an external monitor or television while on crossfire, the results would be different.

I actually had that exact notebook before getting this Asus. It was built well and ran quietly, except for the fact that the optical drive would power on and off at complete random. The tray would also eject without warning. As a result, I returned it.

My brother recently purchased the Asus K53E-BBR9, I assume this is the same as the K53TA with only the processor being different.

His issue is with internet connectivity, the internet will work perfectly and load pages quickly but then randomly pages will start loading incredibly, I wiped the HDD and reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 7 SP1 and when I was browsing the internet was working perfectly but now he is telling me it is doing this again

The K53E is an Intel CPU. It probably uses the same, or at least similar, WiFi card as the K53TA, which means it's garbage. If the chassis on the K53E is the same as the TA, it should be relatively easy to swap out the WiFi card. Uninstall the drivers, pop open the RAM door, which should give access to the wireless. Unsnap the antenna connnectors, then undo the screw that holds the card in place. Take it out, pop in one of these, then secure the screw, antenna, and RAM door. Boot up, install the drivers (which can be downloaded from Intel), and you should be good to go.

The tearing I notice with crossfire on or off, actually (at least in Deus Ex), VSync enabled. It is worse with crossfire, but still visible without it. This is on an LCD Viewsonic TV, or the built in.

Just Cause 2 has the same issue. Higher FPS with crossfire, but choppy movement. Dead Space 2, however, I played through with crossfire, and I don't remember choppiness. VSync locks @ 30fps in that game, though.

Yeah the build quality on this looks really good and it has some nice performance specs too. I'm not sure what to say about the optical drive...

I experience tearing as well when I first load into the game. I don't use crossfire and I have vsync enabled. Next time you are playing Deus Ex with crossfire disabled, toggle triple buffering on and off and after the screen refreshes, it takes my screen tearing 100 percent away.

For screen tearing issues, download the latest asus chipset drivers. For connectivity issues, downloading the latest wifi drivers from asus will probably help.

you know something i just noticed is that fraps is actually causing some issues with smoothness.. even though it reports a high frame rate for some reason it will look jerky when moving the mouse in some games.. i shut off fraps and it goes away.. odd...

Just wanted to mention that from my testing, the newest Asus chipset drivers are crap (at least for Deus Ex HR). Yes, you can overclock with them which may make them have the best performance for some games, but for Deus Ex HR, 11.8's still provide the best performance.

    Hopefully the 11.9's fix the 'can't overclock' problem of 11.7 and 11.8's. I know I could run @ 720/1050 :\

This should be similar to the DV6z that HTWingnut has, except this seems to have a A8-3500M rather than the a A8-3510MX.

It's not a bad price. If you want to have a laugh take a look at what a lower spec'd model would cost in the UK, £549. Which is equivelent to $785 USD... How I love the UK.

Sweet. Time to see if DX HR performance in Crossfire is improved and if the stuttering is fixed.

Also, does anyone else have problems using the 3.5mm headphone jack? Mine cuts in and out sometimes, it'll work fine and then just... die. And sometimes not even a reboot can fix it.

Today is the last day to return my K53TA or get a warranty for it. I'm wondering if I should...

try uninstalling and deleting the audio driver.

when i cleanstalled windows, i just used windows built-in driver. never noticed any cutout
didn't bother with realtek drivers, or the sonicfocus bloatware.

windows lets you tweak those things from the control panel already, so no need for realtek or sonicfocus.

    Ok guys..
I just reinstalled all the drivers on my k53ta (I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate edition on it yesterday because it was having problems)

But I still have the same problems as before
When I run games I get really low fps and they stutter a lot
Example) I only get 1 ~ 40fps in Starcraft 2 on Very Lowest Settings

I turned on HWMonitor in case my laptop was overheating

and my idle temperature for GPU is
    51C

and when I play Starcraft 2 or other games
    the temperature goes up to
64C ... so I don't think it is over heating..

the temperatures are similar in CPU as well

I also still have the problem where my computer cannot play HD videos well...

When I play 1080res Blu ray Videos, the video player has problems...
it doesn't play at all sometimes and when it does play the video is stuttering and the audio and the video goes out of sync.. :(

I set the power option to AMD Power Mode (which is the High Performance Mode) and I even changed the AMD Preset to Gaming as well...
I also enabled Crossfire in the AMD software configuration...

Do I have a bad laptop or something?
Should I try to get a replacement?

That sounds like you got a notebook with defective hardware inside. Return it, and tell them the reason. Get a replacement as soon as possible and you should be happy.

uninstall AMD graphics driver, log into safe mode, go to device manager and uninstall any graphic driver, run driver sweeper (google it) , log in normally and install the latest driver from the ASUS not AMD. Report back.

    all your issues sound software-based.

crappy video players will not play bluray container files properly, and some may require you to set gpu acceleration.

    http://www.h264info.com/clips.html
get vlc player and download one of the 1080p trailers here, and see if it will play properly.
These are compressed compared to full blurays, but at least let us know if you can play them.
I have no problem playing these, and cpu usage is low.

for full bluray containers, Media player classic works well for me.

go download 3dmark11 or vantage, and run the tests. If you can run those, and get results like the ones posted on notebookcheck.net, then there's nothing wrong with your hardware.

one other thing to try is reinstall the older chipset drivers. the ones that came from the factory.

As long as it's not been a full year (this notebook came out a few months ago, you're fine) since your purchase you'll be able to get a replacement with little or no hassle from them.

It certainly could be software based for the video player part, but I believe he's already run benchmarks and tried to runs games and tried all sorts of drivers that have failed him. It's worth a try before he returns it for replacement though.

best buy policy is 14 days.

BB takes no responsibility after those 14 days.

after that, you deal directly with asus on repair and replacement issues.

that's why i said to try 3dmark11. If the graphics were truly shot, he wouldn't even be able to run the tests, or the scores would be way lower than normal.

It sounds like we have a similar problem with the headphone jack. I just stumbled on the problem. Its not the jack but likely the wiring to it. Try pushing down on the palm rest area to the right of the track pad. I am able to get my right channel (the one that cuts out) back if I press in the right place. I am hoping I can get a better view of the problem from the hard drive bay.

you can't get to it from the hard drive bay.

you need to remove the whole palmrest.

there is a flat cable connected to the motherboard just right of the touchpad, connected to the daughterboard that holds the audio jacks.

Guys I think I have a problem with the audio for this laptop. I recently bought this laptop a couple days ago, everything seems fine until I've run into once big issue. Everytime the CPU usage goes over 80% or so the audio get muted/disabled. If I close a program to lower CPU, the sound is back on again. Anyone know what might be the problem? Thanks

I did the same thing as slowsky, and I gotta say I'm lovin' the SSD. However, if you realllllyyyy don't want to spend additional money, you certainly don't have to. But I hated the 5400 rpm hdd so bad, that it became a good excuse to drop another $180 for an already cheap laptop. My boot times and load speeds certainly kick , now, with my Crucial M4 128gb

SSD is a nice thing to have, but if you don't want to drop that kind of cash, at least get a 7200 RPM hard drive. For $63, which includes a 5-year warranty, you can't go wrong with a Western Digital Scorpio Black.
