I finally got one, BB decided today that they are discontinued so they sold me the display for $404! Now, does anyone know the best 8gb ram kit for this beast?

Nice price...floor models aren't all that bad. I'm sure they clean them up and everything.

    Just order one of these: M471B5273DH0-CH9 Samsung DDR3-1333 SODIMM 4GB Notebook Memory - DDR3 SODIMM 200 Pin - SuperBiiz.com

Its the EXACT SAME one that is already in these laptops. I personally like to use and EXACT matching setup.

Great thread, monster of a laptop

I have optimum online and I get like 50mbps down and 8 mbps up but I have the same problem. If my downloading speed goes over 5 mBps the connection automatically drops.

I'm actually thinking of swapping out my network card.

Awesome, the seller shipped my A8-3530MX this morning. USPS projects delivery for Monday. I can tinker after work and let everyone know how it goes. Too bad my 1600MHz DDR3 doesn't get here until Wednesday. :(

It's super easy and pretty cheap. The Bigfoot Killer-N 1102 is about $45 on eBay, but you can get an Intel 6200 for $20 or less.

I just had an issue come up with my K53TA. This morning, I brought the laptop out of sleep while on battery, and when it resumed, windows notification came up saying there was a "Power surge on USB hub port." I don't use the speed charging capability that it came with for charging devices. The only device I usually use plugged into the right USB is a laptop optical mouse.

This makes it a hard gamer, as it took out all my USB (including the 3.0) ports. Just finding out if anyone else has encountered anything similar. I bought it back on August 12th, so little less than a month now.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm willing to try it. Currently tried a support ticket with ASUS.

You are my hero. My irresponsible lifestyle and the release of so many good games made it so that upgrade had to wait for my budget. I'm really glad somebody is going to do it so I can see the results.

By the same token that is an excellent first post in the topic. I'm usually the first to answer the stupid questions of people who don't read the thread, but I do it a little grudgingly. It's hard to read 100+ pages, but in this case there's a lot of good info and most questions have been answered. NBR is usually a really good forum for getting legit answers with no trolling. Every once in a while someone will get petty, but someone else will almost always post at the same moment with a straight answer. That's why I post here often and seldom on slickdeals, Anandtech, Tom's Hardware and Arstechnica.

The chipset theoretically does as there are other laptops with the same one and 3510s. The question is if the bios supports it. No on the PSU, if you check your specs on Asus website, the K53TA has a 95W output psu and draws 62W. Almost as if they assumed we would overclock.

Either a device attached to the port, or the port itself, has drawn more current than normal. Have you tried uninstalling them in device manager and rebooting letting windows re detect them?

this is the problem some of us mentioned before.

left side usb ports are dead after sleep or hibernate, and require reboot, or waiting several minutes, before they turn on again.

try updating to the latest bios 207, and see if that fixes the sleep/usb problem.

    report back results.

if it doesn't work, detail the problem to asus below, and ask them to forward to bios team.

seems like a problem with the sleep states in the bios.

RadeonPro: Radeon Games Profiles Automation Tool

Just doubled my frame rates (game settings on my machine same) using this, it allows you to force crossfire :)

Edit: Some games, warhammer space marine does, just cause 2 does, deus ex does, batman aa does not nor does hehunter, maybe games supporting crossfire only?

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if someone could help me with an issue I've been having with this laptop. Every 5-10 minutes, my internet connection keeps being lost (firefox says something like the connection to the server has been reset). I know its not a browser issue because IE suffers the same problem, and I know its not a connection issue because my roomate can use the same ethernet jack with no issues (I've also tried disabling wireless to see whether that helps). Its a college residential dorming network. I really have no idea what the issue is. All I have to do to fix this connectivity problem is take out my ethernet cord and then just plug it back in, but this happens every ten minutes or so.

    Thanks for any help

Updated to 207. Apparently my laptop mouse is malfunctioning, as I tried plugging it into my other PC's to no adieu.

Also saw that they posted an updated WLAN driver on 8/31 along with chipset update, so updated both of those as well.

My USB Ports finally came up a few minutes ago with some tinkering. Tinkering meaning:
    - Uninstalling all USB from Device Manager
    - Nothing plugged in
    - Restarting, disabling in bios
    - Shutting down/Removing battery for 60s
    - Putting back together, rebooting
    - Get to windows
    - Shutdown/restart and re-enable again in bios

For the TDP of the chip, in cpu-z it says the tdp is 95w?

Lastly, in a dual monitor setup utilizing the HDMI cable, does anyone else see a large use of the graphics portion of the APU just to power the other screen vs using a typical vga cable?

On my desktop idling, the APU doesn't seem to show any graphic usage (or it may dip down to 99% CPU/1% Graphic in AMD System Monitor) utilizing VGA. But with HDMI, the APU every other second will spike to use about 50% to power the same resolution (1920x1080 external monitor) which seems to add more strain to the chip.

Anyone had any luck getting a triple monitor configuration going? (Not eyefinity style, just would be cool if could power 2 additional monitors for work reasons to have additional screens.)

TDP of the chip is 35W, no 95W. CPU-Z needs to be updated.

Just to double check, AMD Llano, max tdp 76w. So it normally operates around 35?

LOL. No laptop this size could cool a 76W TDP chip. I think the desktops are 65W TDP. Also TDP only means the amount of heat the system is required to dissipate to cool the chip adequately, not the amount required for it to run.

Need some help with K10Stat...I got this laptop like a month ago and had K10 working great with nice overclocks. I bought a 7200rpm 500gb hd and reinstalled windows 7 but now when i try to apply the same settings to K10 it seems like nothing happens.. It stays down at 700mhz and jumps up on occasion to 2400mhz, before I was running 2.4ghz with a 2.6ghz boost, it was stable and always worked on start up.. I cant seem to get K10 to overclock now at all. No errors or anything it just doesnt want to "stick" if you know what i mean.. can anyone help me?

I know it says 14" max.. but I don't think it matters lol. I added a 120mm fan next to the 80mm original fan.. I'll find out on Sunday :p

A couple things, are you setting K10stat to "ganged" or "unganged" or turning off K10stat control altogether? Even if you set teh P states and voltages they will still work only Windows will control the speed step of the CPU.

"High Performance" power settings mode will keep your P-states at P0 all the time. "Balanced" will throttle them depending on the load. If you run something like Prime95 though, your CPU should run at P0 state. Otherwise moving up and down is what it's supposed to do.

Is it recommended that I make recovery DVD's? I downloaded a legal and clean Win7 x64 SP1 ISO from Digital River (a Microsoft partner) and I plan to use that to clean install. I looked through the filesystem and grabbed the English user manual and used a program to grab the OEM key so I shouldn't need to make recovery DVD's right?

Could be a driver issue, try using drivers from Asus' site and see if it helps the situation. If you're already using drivers from their site then uninstall them and use the drivers in Windows. If neither of those help you can either buy and install a different wireless card, send the card in to Asus for a replacement, or if it hasn't been 14 days from your purchase get a replacement at Best Buy.

right. you don't need to burn recovery dvd's

the sp1 iso is enough, + atk kbfilter and chipset drivers.

using windows' built in backup feature, you can make a recovery image stored on hard drive or dvds. That way, you don't have to reinstall all your programs.

You need to manually uninstall the display drivers from device manager and make sure to check the box to delete driver files. Then install the new drivers.

You've got the wrong one. Make sure to get the Mobility mod. It'll be version 8.89 display drivers. I'm going to test them on Deus Ex and see how they are. I'm also going to see if overclocking works now.

Edit: Overclocking the 6650m is STILL BROKEN in 11.9 RCx. It crashes and gives BSOD just like 11.7 and 11.8. Very disappointing

Well are you noticing any better performance otherwise? I believe the latest asus drivers allow overclocking, and they work very well for the games. I don't see any reason not to use the Asus ones unless 11.9 offers some stellar crossfire improvement.

Yes, 11.8 and 11.9 destroy the latest Asus drivers.

    Why?

The latest Asus drivers are NOT 11.8, they are 8.863. 11.8 is 8.881. The new Asus drivers are 2-3 months old, which means they don't have the performance improvements that 11.8 and 11.9 do.

In fact, the 8.863's broke DirectX11 support for DX:HR on my laptop. It wouldn't even recognize them as DX11 compatible.

Anyone using the 8.863's is cutting themselves short; they're old drivers, that is why the overclocking still works. 11.8 and 11.9 have better Crossfire support and more performance profiles for new games, like WH40k: Space Marine and Deus Ex: HR.

I don't think that's the case. The 8.863 drivers are dated June 2011, but that just means they began development at that time. They weren't released til August 31, so I'm sure they include most of the new updates considered essential for the Asus. Not sure if they have thhe new openGL support the 11.8s do or not. I got an astounding performance increase using 8.863 over 8.880 (11.8 previews) in some applications. Other games run the same, and deus x might indeed have some reduced performance, though dx11 works completely.

I'm not having any issues with the Asus drivers either. Using the Catalyst Application Profiles helps a bit, especially since they give you extra power profiles to play with.

I installed atk kbfilter but Disgustipated claims that instead of installing the chipset drivers I should install the drivers from AMD's site (although I don't know if that will work as some people had trouble installing it), should I follow his advice, and if I did would I have to manually install everything the chipset would have otherwise installed for me? I've read through this entire thread a couple of times over now and it's kind of confusing. The first post needs to be updated with information for a fresh install, if I need it, newbies definitely need it.

I did already, tomorrow will be the end of the 48h response period.

On skype, I've had people tell me that the built in microphone makes me sound like I'm underwater. Anyone else have anything similar happen to them?

use windows sound recorder and record your own voice, and play it back.

    does it sound muffled ?

sometimes that's due to some noise reduction feature.
does skype have a noise reduction feature?

whatever you install, just get it from asus' website.

if it crashes during installation, install the usb3 drivers separately.

sounds like newest drivers from amd won't hurt either.
either way, it's hard to break the computer.

I tried it the fans don't seem to be getting the power to spin them as fast as they should? I ordered another U2 as I could not find anyone selling the fan kit alone, heck the whole cooler is only 22 bucks on newegg :)

Here is my ghetto mod until the other gets here Wednesday:

Also the hot spot seems to be on the left side (looking at bottom near the exhaust) and the other over the hard drive, my cooler two stock fans placed in those areas seems to work best. Over the vents seems not to work as well?

Not everything I say is 'fact', YMMV with drivers especially. But I honestly believe that 11.8 and 11.9 RCx are the best drivers for these right now, especially with newer games. I just wish AMD would fix the overclocking BSOD issue...
