Here's something to consider. Get one of these Thermaltake fans and use the USB to 3-pin fan connector. $10.99 with free shipping, comes with the fan too, but can use any 3-pin fan apparently. I ordered one and will be using it with a 140mm fan. I haven't been able to find just the USB to 3-pin fan connector adapter though, so gotta order it with the fan. Hopefully it is a standard 3-pin connector.

Amazon.com: Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us: Electronics
    [IMG]

Keep in mind that USB only supplies 5V instead of 12V, so a 12V fan will run at ~ 40% the speed, but that doesn't man CFM will degrade a whole lot though, and it will be quieter than stock 12V too.

I've seen those before.. kind of wanted one like that lol or just buy the usb cable and get a 200mm fan LOL

I finally had a chance to test out the cooler today. I played TF2 for 20-30 minute, usually without a cooler, the max temperature would have reached to 80*C+ in no time.. but with the cooler, the reading says 70*C Max for 20-30 min of game time on TF2. The laptop is running @2.4 GHz High Performance mode, OC'ed GPU to 650/1000.

I'm gonna head this one off politely before the usual "use the damn forum search" reply is up. These questions have been discussed already and I would encourage you to search for the original posts for the whole story, but here is the short version:

Go to your AMD Vision Engine Control Center (it will be in your installed programs, used to be called Catalyst Control Center) and go to either the gaming, performance or power tab. There will be a sub-tab titled crossfire which contains only one checkbox, make sure it's checked.

We're all wondering if the A8s can be put in this notebook. A couple of people are planning it (myself included), but no one has gotten around to it yet AFAIK and believe me, I've been looking everywhere to find out. Theoretically the chipset supports everything from the lowest A4 to the highest A8, but whether the bios does is another matter.

As far as using the dedicated card, go to the power tab in the aforementioned VCC and select the "switchable graphics" sub-tab, where you can set each application to use the GPU you want. This only works when Crossfire is disabled.

Well that's the thing you can't just buy the cable. Haven't been able to find it anywhere. So bought that fan specifically for the cable, hell only $12.00. And then a 140mm fan. And can get a 3-pin fan y cable adapter so you can drive two fans off that if need be.

Actually , switchable graphics WILL work while the crossfire (really dual graphics) is enabled. it will set the default gpu. On current drivers, however, it will NOT get gl to run on the dedicated card as far as I know.

    Seer

Wing, take that fan apart, bolt it into your cool master right under the apu screen and dial it up to max when you get ready to play. (use headphones) Will save you 10c.

I've asked you this before, and I'll ask you again. Please use the multiquote button when responding to more than one person. It's annoying to read through multiple sequential posts by the same person. Not to mention it's a forum rules violation.

Anyone else notice the K53ta seems to be missing from Asus' site?

I can't find it searching for it from the main site, either.

    hmmmmmmmmm

I was wondering about swapping the DVD drive for a second HDD bay, but I didn't know if the DVD was PATA or SATA?

It should work. IN my experience the games that did not support DX10/11 would always run off the 6520, regardless of switchable setting. They would only use the 6650 if crossfire was off.

That was bold of you. I love the mods over at OC.net, but the general users are sooooo much worse than here. The K53TA threads over there are full of people who either say you can't overclock without voiding your warranty or that this laptop just plain can't game period because it's so cheap.

I noticed but they still have the page available and are still updating drivers so there shouldn't be anything to worry about yet. I haven't experienced the graininess others are talking about, though my unit does have one stuck pixel I'm going to keep it as long as it performs well under benchmarks. Despite what earlier posters have reported I had no problem playing League of Legends on all High and Amnesia: Dark Descent on all High.

you sure you don't see it ?

First verify if you have the chimei CMO lcd panel- Go to device manager > Monitors, right click Properties, then to the details tab under "Sibling". It should say CMO. If it doesn't, I don't think it matters, as all brands of panels are affected, I believe.

then, here, look at this 6" from your screen, and turn the brightness up.

it's supposed to be solid dark grey, without yellowish textures or lighter shades mixed in.

and here's another one, without grain this time, just so you see the difference. certain shades have grain because the vbios isn't setup properly.

the speckling and grain also make more pronounced the vertical lines "screen door effect" you see on certain lighter color shades.

I didn't have a siblings options under the details tab in the device manager but looking at the two test images I did not see any graininess. I'm using BIOS 207, although it could be that I just don't notice it.

You have to use a caddy that's 12.7 mm in height and uses a SATA interface. You could try a generic caddy from eBay or someplace similar, but the one from Newmode is well constructed and allows you to use the existing optical-drive faceplate so as not to ruin the aesthetics of the notebook.

Yes, the graininess very much exists under those circumstances. However, I personally am not bothered by it too much. Also, with how I personally use the system 95% of the time (with the brightness lowered and sitting about 18-24 inches away from the screen), this is a non-issue.

That being said, I still sent a message to Asus asking them to fix it. No response as yet, but I did send it Friday afternoon so I wouldn't be surprised if there's nothing until Tuesday or Wednesday.

How about Properties > Hardware Ids ? What does it say there?

I wonder if this graininess is exclusive to cmo panels.

it doesn't bother me much either, although I can still see the grain from normal viewing distance.
Plus, I'd like the screen to be perfect. I emailed them multiple times, but I don't expect a response.
I'm just repeatedly harrassing them, hoping that they might come with another bios update.
If more people email them, maybe they won't think I'm just crazy.

I'm running bios 207, but i still don't know what it fixed.

Based on this old thread- http://forum.notebookreview.com/2929771-post44.html
It sounds like some CMO panels are crappy with graininess.

what temps are you guys getting for cpu/gpu? im getting 45c idling (im used to getting that.. while on full load on my desktop so im a little worried)

should i bother opening this up and reapplying the thermal paste (and maybe do some mods) or is that fine for a laptop? (sort of want this to last 3-4 years)

also, any idea how much a difference i'd get in fps/load times and stuttering (mainly when i enter a new area in a taxing game. if i look around it takes a bit to load) if i get another stick of ram to put it in dual channel?

lastly, how long do your batteries last doing basic stuff like word processing/browsing

45 is cool. Temps into the high 70s during high performance are to be expected, and normal. The cpu is rated to tolerate temps up to 100C.

In the office now room temp is 72F I am idling at 41c, played warhammer space marine about 45 min and load was 73c

I got a fanned coolermaster laptop cooler for mine but I think there are a few who reapplied paste.

I get a brief stutter to but no to big of a deal for me since it stops as soon as I move.

On battery watching dvds I get about three hours, four just surfin around. Hope this helped in some way?

Great news everyone! You're reading this in my voice!

No but seriously. Most of my equipment came today (The RAM inexplicably came today too!.. more on that later). So I got the A8-3530MX all installed and I'm typing from my K53TA powered by an A8-3530MX.

I haven't updated my drivers yet but I plan on doing that hopefully a little later tonight so that I can go ahead and get some tests going so I can share what this upgrade nets me. The great news is that the CPU is seen correcting both in the BIOS and in all system monitoring software I've tried so far.

The bad news is that during the course of the disassembly one of the plastic mount points for a screw broke off, so word of warning to anyone planning to do this.

Further bad news is that the only thing that didn't arrive today was the MX-4 compound so I used some Antec Formula 5 Arctic Silver that I had laying around -- Anyone know how it compares to the MX-4 stuff??

Also I did end up getting the Kingston DDR3 HyperX memory (with the vented heat spreaders) but when checking CPUID I see that it says its running at 800MHz? See my screenshots below, any recommendation to make sure that I have my memory setup properly would be VERY much appreciated.

Also if anyone knows any good K10stats settings for an A8-3530MX that'd be awesome too. Otherwise to google I go. :)

I'll post more as I get more done. Have to get to bed here soon. :\

With AMD Official 11.8 gpu driver or 11.8 in general, you can't OC. You have to install the chipset driver from Asus.

    Good job.

I don't know about the compound stuff, but any would be better than stock/oem lol.

800 MHz is correct if you're using CPU-Z. With mine, it says 667 MHz.

You should run some benchmark and see the temperature compare to stock and is it stable :D

When I bought my K53TA, I had 3.48gb usable ram out of the 4gb ram that came with it. But after I updated the BIOS, the usable ram went down to 2.24gb. Why did this happen? How can I get back more usable ram? Does anyone else have this problem? D:

I have the Samsung monitor, and I do not see graininess. I haven't seen problems with the monitor since I updated to 206. I'm now using 207 bios and not having any problems. However, the viewing angle is terrible.

viewing angles on 99% of laptops are horrible.

These are TN panels. Only the rare few that are IPS panels have good viewing angles.

Fortunately, one does not have to disassemble the whole laptop to replace the lcd. So if a fix doesn't come out for those of us with CMO lcd, I'm gonna rma this biatch.

seems like the dual channel memory speeds things up.

compare that with my single channel.
also seems like the MX is more aggressive with turbo maybe ?

my 2ghz / 2.6 turbo can't reach 7.0 cpu after repeated runs. But it's nice and stable. that's all i care about.

Ok, so I went ahead and uninstalled the drivers for the machine then rebooted into Safe Boot to remove any remnants with Drivercleaner.net. I've got the latest 11.8 ASUS drivers loaded up now and I went ahead and ran a simple burn in (Intel Burn Test).

I'm going to go ahead and burn it in some more but just thought I'd share so far.

Ok. So I went ahead and ran Furmark and Prime95 in conjunction. Temps seem a bit high, but I'm also OC'd to 2.6GHz with 3.0GHz boost. Sitting at 85C after about 10 minutes.
