Oh ok... I'm having a problem, when I installed the 11.10 on my laptop I right click on my home screen and click graphic properties it won't load up at all. I have tried many many times; restarted, shut down, and etc.... and it still won't load :(, any tips?
Edit: I finally got it to work haha :)

I recently found a crap ton of these at my local Best buys. Should I pick one up at all if I already own a pretty new Laptop? I feel like I should jump on this deal while it's still available.

Don't buy one just to buy it or because it's a good deal. The $450 or however much it costs would probably be better saved toward the next new laptop you want.

I was thinking this too, but I feel like I should sell the currrent one I've got and just snag one of these until Ivy bridge comes out.

It really depends on the specs of the notebook you have right now and how comfortable you are with it. If testing out new notebook technology is how you have fun then go ahead and try it out. What notebook do you currently have?

It's a HP DV7. But I go to school right now and it's difficult carrying around a 17 inch laptop, and stressful carrying around a 1200 dollar piece of hardware around with me all the time. HP has been giving me some trouble as they just recently got a hold of me after trying to get something fixed on it. It's a shame because I was thinking of selling this for a DV6, but I'd rather just get a K53TA and try and sell this while it still has a year of warranty.

I see what you're saying. I don't carry around my notebook much but a smaller notebook is even better for portability. If you can bare with the specs of the K53TA then go ahead and keep it and sell your DV7. Just make sure to buy the K53TA and try it out before you sell you DV7 when you're convinced you would do better with the Asus. What are the specs of the DV7? What do you use it to do?

For your uses it seems you need a notebook that powerful, but you need it in a smaller form factor. Getting a notebook with similar specifications but a screen at 15.6 inches would suit you better than getting the K53TA. For your uses it would be under-powered and slow.

I figured it would be that way. I guess I'll just have to see if I can get a trade for a smaller laptop with around the same specs. Thanks alot for all the help.

Don't get the Asus, way to big to carry around at school. At least, I wouldn't.

You should look at the MSI X460DX-006US, around $700 new.

Or the Lenovo Y460P and 470 laptops.

All of those are good sizes but I'm quite certain they're too weak for his use. His 3D graphics work and gaming requires him to have a lot of power to render things quickly.

The K53 will be a downgrade in terms of performance. Further, you won't be able to sell your existing notebook for that much, especially since it doesn't have a 1080p screen. Either stick with what you have or look to the smaller HP dv6tqe. Alternatively, consider a refurbished Dell Precision workstation. Those notebooks are on the chunky side as well, but they're hard to beat for mobile rendering capability. The AMD FirePro 5950 is comparable to the Radeon 6770 in your current machine in terms of gaming, and the available NVIDIA Quadro GPUs are a bit faster. Dell frequently runs coupons for the outlet, in fact I believe there's a 20% off Precision coupon available right now.

That is the same type, but unless you're anal retentive, any DDR3-1333 stick will work. I bought a G.Skill one for $18 on sale shortly after acquiring my machine. Here's a composite screenshot of each stick showing that they're running at the exact same timings.

    Hey guys, new here.

I've noticed while playing Skyrim it's using the 6520G. Isn't that the worse of the two cards? How do I make it use the other one?

Restart the game, then quit out of it. Immediately after, right click on the desktop and select Configure Switchable Graphics. The executable for Skyrim should be listed and will probably say Not Assigned, which is why it will default to the integrated GPU. Click on the yellow box until it goes red and says High Performance. Then future instances of the game should run on the 6650M.

It really depends on what you need it for. It's really versatile if you're a gamer and the price can't be beat but if you're not a gamer then it's not going to be as big of a bargain.

How do you know it's using the iGPU?

Mine shows the 6520G in the skyrim launcher options,
but uses the 6650M for the game regardless.

I checked which gpu was actually being used, using hwinfo64.

Also, what driver version are you running? If it is the stock Asus set, they are older and probably don't support the game properly.

    Ah okay, same here. Thanks!

Is 30 fps on all high settings good for Skyrim? With this rig, at least? Seems to be playable.

Also, drivers are latest ATI Catalyst suite. 11.11 or w/e.

I've skimmed through most of this thread... phew, what a read.
I got one of these Asus refurbished off eBay for $430 and it appears just like new, couldn't be happier.

Anyway, right now I am using the latest video / chipset drivers on the Asus website.

First what is the best driver for game performance in general (I know it depends on the games somewhat)?
From what I gather 11.10 seems good, can someone help me find the download link for this?

Second, Can I overclock the GPU with 11.10? If not, what is the newest graphcis driver that I can use and still overclock the GPU? Download link?

So...did anybody ever swap out the LCD in one of these with something better yet?

I would still seriously considering doing that if it works out...I'm still pretty bummed about how bad the screen is on mine.

    Download AMD Catalyst Drivers 11.10 Vista 64 - FileHippo.com

No you can't, and if I remember correctly the latest allowing you to overclock was 8.86 on the Asus site. Wait for someone else to confirm this before trying them though.

I tried a 1600x900 LG LCD and nothing would show up on the LCD at all. I don't know if it was just that model that will not work on this laptop, or if no 1600x900 screens will work on this laptop... I'd love to know if one would work also! :(

More information: My catalyst under "information > hardware" only detects the integrated GPU as well. Device manager shows both, with both updated drivers. How can I know which is being used? :(

If you scroll to the bottom of the information page, it should say "Linked adapter." You can click on it to expand, and it will show the discreet GPU.

You need to OC up to around 2.2 or 2.3ghz for the best performance. For me though I haven't found a setting that works without it freezing so I'm OCing at 2.0ghz and I get anywhere from 24-35fps which makes playing the game a lot harder.

Well, mine just bit the dust. I bought one of these refurbished for $430.
    I had was running prime95 for a few hours at 2.2ghz / 1.0500v / max 73C.

I came to check on it and the screen was black, power still on and heat coming out, but nothing else. From then on it wouldn't boot up, just black screen when it powers on. Power light would come on, but no hard drive activity at all. Tried external monitor with the same result. Tried Fn+F7 and the other monitor F keys, nothing. I even pulled the top cover off and pulled the cmos battery to reset the bios in case it got screwy.

I've only had it 5 days, and I don't think 2.2ghz / 1.0500v / 73C was pushing it "too hard". I can get it exchanged, but am a little weary of this laptop now. Anyone else had theirs die? Anyone else with reliability issues?

@thepunkerguy - Turn off, unplug AC power, remove battery, hold power button for at least 30 seconds. Plug everything back in, turn it on and see what happens.

Done all that, even took the top cover off and pulled the cmos battery and rained all power to reset the bios. Sadly it's just a case of a bad CPU or MB. The seller is shipping me a replacement on Monday when his next batch comes in from Asus. My only concern is of this happening again in the future. I don't mind a dud, I just hope this isn't going to be a common problem with this model.

usually, whenever i launch games, the "configure switchable graphics" pops up. i then click 'configure' so that i can use the high performance graphics card for playing. but recently, nothing shows up in the "recent applications" box and when i browse for the game, still nothing shows up. is it a problem with catalyst or is it something else?

Once you've assigned an executable file once, the driver stores it in a profile so you need not worry about it again until you upgrade/reinstall the Catalyst software.

    Quick Question,

How do you update the graphics drivers to 11.11a and still keep the chipset drivers. When i installed the new 11.11 drivers from AMD my USB 3.0 port stopped working so i assume the chipset drivers from ASUS have the usb 3.0 driver added to them.

What temps are too hot/risky for this laptop to be at on a consistent basis? I usually hit around max 70 degrees celsius on new games, but usually its around 65-68. What temp would be safe for this laptop to run at so it has no affect on long term reliability/usage? Thanks in advance.

I would like to keep that zone to 80C, As most of us getting Throttle in the neck at 80+C. I am regularly hitting 75 to 78 during intense firefight. Its bit warmer here. BTW this AMD chip on mine is clocked at higher voltage than others at 1.3625 B0, 1.100 at P0, 0.9375 at P6.
I am running at 2.0 Ghz @ 1.0250 B0 off, nothing else sticks below that voltage limit at 2Ghz

Does anyone has tried to play Saints Row 3 with this computer?

With mine, even with all set to the minimum (I even edited the CFG manually to disable motion blur and things like that), the game runs at less than 15 FPS.

Also I've tried to overclock my GPU (I've give up on trying to overclock the CPU it's to hard, I don't even understand the guides about K10stat...).
With Trixx it keeps saying me that crap about ULPS (I have changed all the things manually in the registry).
With afterburner, it seems I can't go faster than the default setting.
    (I have changed the cfg)

Is it an issue with the 11.10 catalyst drivers?

Overclocking the GPU has only worked with one set of drivers. It was released by Asus with a date of August 31, but they're no longer available.

I'm having a weird issue with the monitor on this laptop all of the sudden, when i unplug the power cord the colors get all washed out and really bright, and as soon as i plug the power cord back in the colors go back to normal.

This just started happening all of a sudden.
