that's too high, I've rarely seen my temps ever get higher than 80C in the 4 months I've owned mine. The only time I've seen 80+ was when I was trying to overclock to 3ghz and gaming under the original July 2011 old chipset drivers. With newer drivers everything seems a little more efficient; such that only minor overclocking gets great results and as cool as stock.

I'd return it or RMA it or something, or get a replacement.

Yeah, that's not right. Last night with an OC of 2.2 playing CS:Source for well over an hour my max temp was 71C...

Speaking of temps. What's the "maximum safe" temps for this notebook? I'm trying to keep it at 70C or under for longevity. Is that silly?

edit: Also, i reported earlier that after a fresh load i was getting ~170FPS with the source stress test. With an OC to 1.8GHz upped my average to 205FPS with max temps staying at 68-69C which is the same i got with stock clocks.

Damn.. I've bought everything to mod it already :O Are they going to repaste and reship it only? If so, I'll do that myself :p

No idea, i would probably try to do it myself and if that doesn't work then i would send it back.

If they refurbished it, make sure the fan is blowing. Wouldn't be the first time i've seen a refurb laptop fan not be plugged in...

you sure about this? ive been following this thread for months and im pretty certain that low 80s has been fine for people who OC (especially on a locked p-state). I pretty much always run at P0 @ 2.3GHz when gaming and I usually hit a peak of 83C. Never had any problems though.

As a little added side note, I got this laptop running amazingly with my 27'' LED monitor at 1080p on star wars: the old republic smooth at 40-70fps no matter what. I can't run with everything maxed out at 1080p but I don't need any anti-aliasing at that resolution so it's a give and take. I also am using ATI Tray Tools as a more direct way to control some addition graphics tweaks to get me more speed and it works. Any questions on any of that just let me know

Is the fan supposed to push a lot of air? 'Cause I've put a piece of paper in front of the freakin hot vent and it's not moving at all.. normal?

    Thank you

Didn't mean to scare you. I think you'll be ok at 80C as I've heard that these CPUs are supposed to tolerate up to 100C. Downpresser is right, it shouldn't take away from it's safe usage & performance. You should feel a little heat given off even in idle when placing your hand in front of the vents; it should push more heat in intense action games or high oc, with fans revved up more. The fan on mine typically isn't overly powerful to push paper, but I'm also on the old bios 206 which supposedly revs up the fans less than later bios
You should hear a quiet fan in the background in a quiet room, at all times. If it's dead silence the fan may not be functioning.

I OC'd cpu and gpu and when idle , temps are around 40c, and I can feel heat going out, while gaming it usually goes up to 70-75c and I can hear fan going faster

The CPU starts to autothrottle at about 90c, sometimes you're better off running at a slightly lower clock so that it never reaches the auto-throttle threshold, otherwise it runs at a significantly slower clock for a few seconds before trying to run back at the P0 state.

I can confirm this behaviour. Once I started ocing and the temps got to 90C the performance started to drop since it was throttling.

Ran into a huge snag financially and I need to sell my K53TA asap to avoid a personal crisis. This is the main place I thought to turn to besides craig's list to try and sell this beauty of a laptop. I got it just 2 weeks ago on a no-return policy and I absolutely hate to have to sell it like this. If anyone is interested in it, it's in mint condition because I've babied it to perfection and It has a 96gb SSD Sata II drive in it along with an extra 4gigs of RAM bringing it to 8gigs.

I am selling it for 500.00 just because it's practically new and it has a 120.00 SSD + 30 dollars worth of an extra RAM module. I'd really appreciate anyone interested in this deal and would pay for standard shipping to you, I could do overnight shipping for a little extra cost but I am willing to cover some of that too if it means I can get this bill paid.

If you would like pictures I can take some tonight and send them via e-mail. I appreciate the community on this site and thank everyone who has helped me get the most out of this laptop for what short time I've owned it.

    Here's my experiance with BFBC2.
I don't have fps numbers, didn't setup fraps yet.

    CPU @ 2.3GHz, GPU 645/995 MHz
Started really sluggish, specially in menus, and really laggy ingame, so I turned off crossfire in catalyst (dual graphics as called in catalyst, also shows that only APU will be used, seems false) and tried again. Menus worked perfect, and ingame started with a 10-20 sec low fps, but then seemed running fine on medium settings with AA off. Maxium temp was around 60-65°c.
    Also I have Call of Duty 2 running @ 200 - 220 fps.

I have tested skyrim a lot with this PC.

This is with Every setting on Max.

    [Caves] Average
    Narrow tunnels- 55 FPS
    Open Rooms - 35 FPS
Open Rooms with things going on - 22 FPS

    [Outside] Average
Most all areas - 18 FPS

Now this is after some tweaks:

    [Changes]
-Shadows Set from Ultra to High (High is good)
-Removed FXAA(adds a frame or 2 and FXAA looks like crap..)
-Changed AA to x4 (barely any difference unless you are staring hard core at your screen O.O )

Increased Average FPS outside from 18 to 26 FPS (this being out where you can see EVERYTHING)
    Around mountains - 30 FPS
Inside Caves - ~32 FPS is usually the low and 60 FPS is the high.

Then i did a few fixes to make the game a tad bit prettier with no real difference in speed

    Skyrimprefs.ini

    -fShadowDistance=5000
    -bTreesReceiveShadows=1
    -bDrawLandShadows=1

Overall this game is playable on All the graphics you need ;D

I have tor and I'm lucky to get 30fps. I just downloaded the 11-12 drivers and I see no significant change.

As someone else posted could you give a bit more info on what you are using? It would be much appreciated.

i've tried this a lot before and I'm still gettin the BSOD. ULSP is disable in registry, I did the registry edit manually and with the little program we can use too. I got the lastest driver 11.12 (12.01 will come out soon!) I've tried either MSI Afterburner and Sapphire Trixx... and nothing work :( HELP ME PLEASE! lol

P.S. I've got heat problem before and I get rid of it. I made a profile like the default one but I've undervolt the boost to 1.1375v.. Played a lot of hours on battlefield 3 without problem/crash and now my max temps is 74C woot!

Your temperatures sound about right, about the same as my temps!

Not sure why OC's not working for you, but you might try to install the old Asus 8.863 drivers first to see if you can overclock with those, since that driver was well known to overclock. Then after you get it to work with old drivers install the 11.12 over them. Maybe then it will work. If that doesn't do then I don't know what you can do.

I did a quick test on how much of a difference overclocking makes & with 650/1000, I get roughly an all around 5 FPS improvement. For Batman AC with medium to high settings [1440x900, AA is FXAA low, very high details, all effects on]
High FPS improved from 47 to 53
Average FPS improved from 37 to 42.
SO overclocking is definitely making a difference. It may vary from game to game.

Yes I have it OC'd (CPU and NOT GPU). If you take off AA you'll be playing smooth. If you take shadows off and AA off then you're gonna be playing with some high FPS outside.

Edit: oh ya and HD mods for this game show no change in FPS for me.

The more i use this laptop, the more i love it! Can't believe what a difference OC to 1.8 makes over stock clocks. And even then the difference from 1.8 to 2.0 is crazy. Granted the only thing i've really used it for is web browsing and playing CS Source but still!

I'm playing GTA4.I only overcloked the [email protected]. The game runs smooth on Texture : High & Render : Medium @ 1366x768 resolution, which is the default one of course.

But i have another problem, maybe you can help me out. I encounter stuttering while i play but if i disable Windows Event Log and restart the laptop everything works great, but if i do so, i can't connect to the internet because i use PPPoe connection, i receive an error for windows remote management blah..blah. Do you have this kind of problem? I use W7x64. i used also w7 x86 and i don't have this stuttering problem.

Ok, does anyone know how to make the mouse pad scrolling option faster or smoother on this computer? I am literally about to break this computer. I forgot my mouse at home (like a dumb guy) and have to resort to using this pain in thing. It's not like it's that big of a pain it's just on youtube and certain other websites that when you scroll with the mouse pad it's not as smooth and it's really hard to scroll vertically/horizontally(if you know what I mean). If anyone can give me any tips that would much appreciated.

I always use an external mouse at home but when I'm on the road or in the library, I force myself to use the mouse pad. I never liked mouse pads on any laptop, but the ELAN settings customizations on our laptop are nice!

So to change settings, go to taskbar at bottom right corner, and look for "ELAN Pointing Device"-->right click on it and select Property of Touchpad. You can change "Wheel settings"-> vertical scrolling speed. You can also specially customize pad by going into ELAN options-->you can program "tapping" for left and right buttons. This helps in staying quiet instead of using the loud clickedy buttons.
-->I programmed it this way: A single tap for the click/select (acts as left button) and two finger tap for Pop-up menus (acts like right button). Scrolling can be done with two fingers gently passing down & up on pad.

Finally I can overclock everything with the newest drivers. My system is repasted with Arctic MX-4, so your results may vary. I used Arrowslinger's CPU states (2.367 appears to be the actual exact ceiling of the HyperTransport) and got my GPU to 700/1050. Kept it on the fan dock at all times, but temps stayed below 80 in all games tested.

Most telling real world result: In Skyrim, go to Riverwood. Walk under the gate into the South end of town, near the blacksmith and mill. Right as you pass under the gate, your FPS should drop to about 17. This is my official benchmark spot. The game loads the valley to the North when you cross this point and it taxes your system more than any other part of the game for some reason.

With all clocks at max safe settings, I went from 17FPS to 24FPS. That is a huge, huge gain, because it means that the game will always average above 30fps, aka industry standard minimum playable.

What are your Skyrim settings? Mine are on high with the two samplings off and everything else is on. In Riverwood, the area you stated, I get around 21-23 fps, but past that I average about 25-30+ fps. But there is one town that drops my fps to about 15(forgot the name). But other than that, this comp. runs the game amazingly. Also, I haven't overclocked the gpu, just the cpu at 2.3

AA4x, AF4X, custom distance render settings, shadow .INI tweaks, native res, CF-off. Also have default allocation set to use more than 2GB RAM.

Make sure you have used the .INI tweak to disable Vsync. As long as you can live without vsync, you will see a large gain from this.

My average everywhere is 40-60FPS. In towns where it is snowing heavily and multiple guards are in view casting shadows with torches, I get 30+. The only point I get below 30FPS is the aforementioned gate.

Let me save you about 80 steps I took that are now obsolete. The tweakguide is up. Everything you need is in this guide.

NOTE: Be mindful that there are two INI files you must modify for different settings. One is in your install directory, the other is in your user/docs/my games/skyrim. The guide mentions this, but it is in the small print.

Repasted using the Antec Formula 7 diamond stuff, only lost about ~3C at 1.8GHz. Was ~69-71C under load before, now is 66-67C under load.

Repasted my wife's Acer with a Phenom ii x3 N850 and ati 5650 and lost over 10C at idle, and like 30C under load. Was hoping for better results on mine.

Also, i hate the fact that a cooling pad does absolutely nothing for us. They really should have added an "intake" grate on the bottom of the laptop.

Depends on the games you're playing. I never tested mine with 4GB, i upgraded to 8GB before i even turned it on.

Ram is so cheap, just do it!

Really true. I've got 8Gb (2x4Gb) Patriot 'performance' RAM 1333mhz (the max we can go i think) for 48$ shipped to my door on Ebay. went from 6.3-.5 to 7.3 in WEI.

There are some benchmark over the internet explaining the gain you can have by upgrading your ram. Just google 'ram upgrade worth it' or something like that.

Found this on utube Corsair Memory 4GB vs 8GB performance - Do more with more RAM - YouTube and this on oc.net 4gb vs 8gb ram-?

The only reason why I'm looking into it is because I multi task while I game a lot (having firefox open, AIM, yahoo) etc, and I noticed that without gaming, I'm already using 42% of my memory.

sup. I've been away for 2 months

anyone else discover anything new with bios 211 ?
    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/K43TA/K43TA211.zip

sounds like they didn't fix any of our complaints eh?
the official asus webpage says "Update EC firmware". I wonder what the embedded controller does.

and we can overclock the 6650m now ???

    Yup just did it today.

I got a technical question for u guys. I was experiencing some cpu oc today and test my WEI with the new oc.. I went to a 3Ghz OC (boost) and 2.6Ghz OC (P0) and my RAM score went from 7.3 to 7.5.. how a cpu oc can affect a ram score? o_O

Hi everyone! I'm really glad to see many threads for the Asus K53TA. I recently purchased an A53TA-XE2 from Tigerdirect for 499.99 and I love it. A question that I've had on my mind for several days is in regards to the CrossfireX. When you disable the dual-graphics are you using the APU graphics like it states in the catalyst control center or are you using the discrete card (6650m)? I want to make sure I'm getting the full potential from my new toy. I have the AMD Radeon Driver 11.12 and display driver 8.920. Thanks and your help is greatly appreciated.

Yes Finally we can do it thanks to official AMD graphic drivers.
I posted links to the exact driver file we need " AMD 11.12 mobility drivers" in the owners lounge: :D >>> http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...607232-k53ta-owners-lounge-8.html#post7977043
I also posted some of my results on games elsewhere below:
however, still no improvements in OPENGL games; they still run off the integrated 6520g; so it may be a very long wait for that to be fixed or it may never be fixed. I was educating people about the OPENGL issues in llano laptops recently just to make more people aware why Intel is still better for gaming..see below.
    Code:
    http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=46341488&postcount=377 ---game results

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=46602440&postcount=64 ---OPENGL running off integrated GPU.
Congrats on solving your problem and OCing! That's why I posted links to the exact "mobility" driver, since it's important that everyone is using the "MOBILITY" drivers and not desktop. ;)
It's taking advantage of the 6650m so you're OK! To be sure, always game at high performance & check in MSI Afterburner under "GPU 1 usage %" graphs and make sure it's active. ;)
