So still no word on OCing with the new drivers & chipset, and getting Xfire to work on the new drivers & chipsets?

So I did a clean install of Windows & all the updates this time just to try the new drivers.........

So I start BF3, FPS seems higher with the settings I had before but acting weird... then I realize it's on 1400x900 with my 19" display... so I try to go to the native 1366x768 & I don't have that option now.. I only have it with the built in display!

Anyone have any ideas? I already tried unhiding resolutions.. turning the one display on/off with settings.. I swear it's gotta be the drivers.. I want the native res for my external display, it will run sooo smooth then like before!

I'm using hdmi out into a dvi (adapter). I read VGA might give me the res I want if this one isn't now.. I'll give that a try shortly.

VGA: No difference.. it gave me a lower 1400x1050 to go with though... maybe I'll have to stick to that unless someone can help me figure this out LOL.... well I won't be using this out of the game though, this is really funky looking with 1050.

Nope... the res isn't any good in the game either.. I wonder if I've had my display for 30 days, would just swap it to an 18.5 now to be guaranteed the 1366x768 or 760. Oh crap I threw the box away..

UPDATE---------- ok so I played on the native res with the laptop display... perfection like before these drivers that don't allow the res. on my external monitor. I also tried it on 1360x768 & then I had the same problem as the 1400x900 resolution..... basically I'm seeing horizontal line mismatch.. I run into a tunnel & the horizontal line texture on the wall kind of bounces up & down. When I go to the native res, no problem with that.

Hello guys. I just got this notebook and started reading the thread then realized it has 200+ pages. I read about OC-ing, but there is nowhere some good guide. Notebook came with 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium and bunch of asus programs (uinstalled half of them), I have downloaded K10, I'm now updating my gfx card drivers. So I was wondering if anyone can post guide on overclocking cpu & gpu I'd be grateful, or if somebody already did just link me the post/guide.

:D Successfully OverClocking! So finally we can all overclock GPU with MSI afterburner 2.10 on new AMD graphic driver: 11-12_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.
See my before and after results here: Asus 8.863 vs AMD 11-12 mobility drivers
    Code:
    http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=46341488&postcount=377
And I had no serious problems of any kind after installing them via express method. Make sure they are mobility drivers for complete compatibility. Run drivers in high performance mode with single graphics (PC Games actually use 6650m, not the slower apu 6520g-as stated confusingly in vision control center; but OpenGL games are still only using integrated APU). So I don't use dual graphics mode(crossfire) because I get less performance (FPS), or buggy micro stutter.

I always have cpuz running then when I click apply in the program I can see the core speed go up. Once you click ok the program will be in your tray if working correctly.

    Just an update........

I couldn't get the 1366x768 res anymore for my external display after I did a clean install of Win for the new video drivers..

I've been working on this since all day yesterday.. reinstalled Windows nearly 6 times.. different vid drivers each time, last resort I tried the ASUS discs for Windows, no change..

Hooked up to my tv, gave me the res. as an option.... hooked up a Samsung to my monitor, gave the res as an option... so I know it's an issue with the notebook software.....

I try VGA again after everything, it gives me the res as an option in CCC after I clicked disable EDID (Can't remember if even pulled up CCC the previous times with VGA)

I ended up making my own monitor driver & it worked. I now have 1366x768 as a selectable resolution again with my monitor using HDMI to DVI.

    I used Phoenix & Moninfo. -- here's the tutorial I followed--

    Windows 7 Forums

I had to use detailed timings to get 1366 because it's not a multiple of 8. I found this post to use what I'm using--

Windows 7 Forums - View Single Post - Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates

Anyway, this is great, now I'm going to reinstall Windows with my disc (not ASUS) & then install the NEW drivers that I wanted to use & then I'll have the monitor's native res out of the game, & the res I need for the game, IN THE GAME! WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad I don't have to call ASUS back, I had called them this morning for the first time & just had to keep calling other dept. numbers & then they told me to install the lastest chipset drivers........ no thanks.

hey guys i see everyone discussng bios 207 i was wondering mine came with 209 is there an issue with this bios? just asking because it seems almost no-one is using it. Also im not sure but the screen is not that awful for me although i have the cmo1507 screen could it be because of the 209 bios?
on a different note i sort of deleted catalyst control centre (or w/e its called on this computer), any downfalls to that other than not being able to control the settings/turn off crossfire.

No one is using it because it's simply not on the asus website for our laptop. I did try out another bios made for a similar laptop, the k43, essentially a smaller version of the k53, and its 211 bios did work in my case (flashed using the windows bios flasher available on asus driver website; posted about it a few pages back; seemingly no real benefit but I'm not sure what to even test). If you attempt to flash the k43 211 bios, do be prepared to find/have a method of bios recovery handy just in case it borks, as with any bios flashing.

Personally I'm still on some older drivers and just turned off xfire. It's only for the higher versions of directx, stuff like dx9 will never see benefit, and most of what I play is dx9 anyway. There are still no options yet to use only the discrete gfx full time, which sucks for opengl and a number of other games that simply never get the discrete treatment.

oh i see; so if my laptop came with 209 is that a good thing or should it try 207. Yea i only play Dota/dota2/counter strike so im pretty sure crossfire doesnt help if not damage.

Ok So after tweaking the laptop - I still can not get my 6650 gpu to OC with 11.12 drivers. I am able to steadily play The Old Republic at 30-50fps without stuttering and my graphics are all maxed besides shadows, which are off. I have tested BF3 as well and I can play at High with 30ish FPS multiplayer. My Processors are OC'd to 2.5ghz in games.

I was wondering if there is a way to script K10STAT to auto-switch profiles when opening and closing a game to go from power saving to gaming mode for my profiles. Anyone tried this?

Also, I have a 96gb SSD and 2x4gigs of RAM in this. I am really pleased with how this thing performs.

    I plan to get:
    http://www.amazon.com/Drive-12-7mm-...U4T2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1317246214&sr=8-4

So I can RAID my SSD setup or have a 2nd HDD for all of my extra Data.

huh. could you give some more detaileds about your settings? (graphic settings in SWTOR, CCC settings, etc.) SWTOR runs relatively okay for me, but even with everything on low it start to run like crap (FPS in the teens) as soon as there are a bunch of players on screen. If i'm on the space station or in a PVP match it can become almost unplayable.

Do you have Crossfire on? For me thats been the culprit. I can play BF3 on Ultra (AA Deferred off) with 30 FPS

I have all settings in The Old Republic set to High except for Shadows, which is off. I have all of my settings in CCC set to quality or application preferred. I have Verticle Sync forced off, and I have Crossfire off. I get 30+fps in PvP matches and I am loving it.

I suppose the reason for such good performance is the small resolution the laptop runs native at. I will try on my 1080p monitor tonight and I expect much lower fps with these settings.

I am still unable to OC my Graphics card though my ULPS is off and I have MSI afterburner 2.10 installed with 11.12 catalyst drivers.

I've almost always run games with this off. I double-checked just now and it's currently off.

I'll go through and double-check my settings...I'm running the 12.1 preview driver currently but I had almost identical performance prior to that.

Using latest official AMD 11.12 mobility Drivers DIRT 3 plays excellent probably better than Xbox360.
Very little overclocking of CPU:K10stat 1.7ghz with 2.3 Turbo
GPU was overclocked with MSI Afterburner to 650/1000.

    On high settings at 1360x768
--benchmark showed 41.6 minimum FPS; 49.97 average. Benchmark was all in First person perspective which will always be the highest FPS.
In 3rd person perspectives, from looking at Radeon Pro, it was ranging between 36FPS-52FPS.

But I like playing at 1440x900 on external monitor & choosing AUTO settings (which makes most things Medium, Ambient oclusion and cloth are high, crowd is low)
--benchmark showed 41.47 minium FPS and 50.4 Average FPS.
In First person perspective, it shoots up as high as 69 FPS for a second and mostly averages 52FPS depending on the scenery and other cars.
In 3rd person perspectives, from looking at Radeon Pro, it was ranging between 38FPS-66FPS, mostly at 52FPS.

Temps were only between 65-70C but cool down to 50C in a hurry after game is stopped.

I use a cheaper laptop cooler I got from ebay (see below) about 4 years ago. Yours looks better, but I think it still works a little, maybe a 1 to 5 C difference. not much but there is still space underneath with vents to let the heat pass, 3 fans pushing air up. I wish we had 4 usb instead of 3 since I use a wireless keyboard, mouse, and xbox controller, so I don't connect the cooler sometimes. I'll buy a usb hub soon for that.
After reassessing Dirt 3, I think the maximum temp was really 66C (between 58-66C) without cooler. But with cooler, it was improved to (55-61C) So in games, a cooler makes a 2 to 5C difference.:)

I got mine from the egg then ordered another one for the fan package alone.

I put a deck of cards (I only use my laptop at work) under the front the air flow then can bring it down 4 degrees C.

Yours looks to be the same design, mine just fits in my laptop bag :)

I posted this in a wiki on SD
    Code:
    http://slickdeals.net/f/3183764-ASUS-K53TA-BBR6-Laptop-AMD-Quad-Core-A6-3400M-1-4GHz-APU-15-6-LED-4GB-DDR3-500GB-HDD-1GB-AMD-Radeon-HD-6650-HDMI-WiFi-N-6-cell-Win-7-Prem-64-bit-450#edit41552600
OVERCLOCK GPU instructions:- Updated thanks eggzy!
Benchmark will vary depending on Gaming perspective.
The Benchmark tool on Dirt 3 was using First person perspective yesterday, and today it automatically chose cockpit view. The cockpit view gave lower results.
At high settings --it was 42.9FPS avg, 34fps lowest; At my desired Auto_Medium1440x900 settings, It was 46FPS avg, 36 fps lowest.
So keep in mind my first test was from First person perspective and that was the reason for such great numbers. A gt540 should yield similar results when going back & forth between first person and 3rd person perspectives in game since results will vary depending on gaming perspective. Maybe your friends were in 3rd person perspective.
I would say the 2 GPUs are almost equal. I've recently been biased to gt540 + Intel cpu since it can handle OpenGL games better versus all our AMD llano laptops being restricted to handling OpenGL games with its slower integrated GPU. And Intel i5 & i7 have some performance advantages over our AMD A6 at the price of creating more heat. But the best thing about A6 laptops are they arguably run cooler than the Intel cpus with the added ability to control CPU clocking allowing battery life to last slightly longer.

By the way, guys - Newegg has this laptop as recertified for 399$ (.com / USA) or 449$ (.ca / Canada) if anyone is interested (It comes with a 3 month warranty).

Amazing deal for a laptop that can handle these two new games on high settings.

The only bad thing about the notebook cooler I have was, I had to resolder the wires underneath since they were exposed & breaking off the on/off switch. And I had to tape the metal front end hinge with many layers of electric tape & clear packaging tape so the metal wouldn't scratch up the laptop. I just use the cooler at home so the wires underneath don't get ripped off again. It's a Cheap Chinese design, but it's atleast functional.

After even more extensive testing, Skyrim runs on High/Ultra around 30fps.

I also run all of my games at the laptop's native resolution. 1080p is a challenge for this GPU.

I also found that the best OC settings for my lappy is about 2.5ghz with no issues/crashes/or weird things happening. I max out at 71c at that temp in game 100% processor usage. I am planning on getting a under laptop cooler just to lower that a bit more but I am happy with my temps.

If my laptop can handle above 2.5ghz stable at lower temps, should I see any performance gains in games? Like say I tried 2.8ghz and it was stable under 80c is it worth it?

OC'ing my GPU is next, I finally got it unlocked to overclock but I want to see what i can push because I don't want to mess up the glorious setup I have now lol!

I see the most improvements from OCing the cpu rather than the gpu, and the most I ever overclock cpu for games is 2.6ghz, but I mostly have it around 2ghz or 2.2ghz with turbo of 2.4 or 2.6. The GPU overclock may be a bit overrated...not sure if I really see much improvement with GPU oc; But since we can do it, I overclock it a little to 650 /1000 but no more, sometimes I'll just set it to 640/960.

With Skyrim, I custom set it with 1360x768 MED settings ,AA 2, AF 2, and Texture Quality High, ViewDistance->object fade 3, distant object detail ultra.) The game has amazing realism and I get smooth framerate ranging from 31 fps when things get very active to a smooth 40-50FPS most of the time; it will shoot up to 60 fps in enclosed spaces but mostly on avg around 40 fps throughout game,
    with P0 2ghz & turbo 2.4ghz and gpu oc of 650/1000.

Trying to overclock this for a friend and still having problems, after following instructions.

In TRIXX, "Disable ULPS" is checked. This appears to do nothing, and I had to regedit and manually change the values for two ULPS settings. Regardless of rebooting with TRIXX allegedly disabling or enabling ULPS, these registry values will not change unless I manually edit them.

If I use TRIXX, it still warns that the computer is in ULPS mode and overclocking will crash. If I use Afterburner instead, the computer does indeed blue screen.

I've also tried following the instructions and using the registry files here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/601808-k53ta-best-deal-ever-could-49.html#post7861621

Same problem: TRIXX says the computer is still in ULPS, and using afterburner just blue screens.

Yeah I got problems too. Here's what worked for me: Uncheck Disable ULSP in trixx, then edit the reg, restart, check disable ulsp and I used afterburner for OC (had to do that cfg changes for unofficial overclocking)

Glad you got it to work; so the regedit trick is still required. Also remember to use 8.863 drivers from Asus or AMD11.12 drivers or later, or else blue screens may occur. I think I did a combination of all the regedit / other instructions...but just couldn't remember the sequence order that Trixx disable ulsp has to be done. Once we all go through the process of unlocking gpu oc, we tend to all forget how we did it many months later. So hopefully more people will be able to get this to work.

But I still think overclocking GPU is a bit overrated....I haven't really made a comparison before and after oc gpu. I just do it by habit when playing a game.

I Updated the Overclocking GPU instructions on previous page! Thanks eggzy! http://forum.notebookreview.com/8198537-post2134.html

New official chipset drivers v1.2.1.321 (v11.12 or v12.1 Preview probably) from Asus released:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS K53TA
I wonder if GPU overclocking is possible with these new drivers.
    Who knows ?
Happy New Year everybody guys ;)

    Not a graphic driver...Not a Big size---it's a Small size (kb not mb) :D
--false alarm -- it's just some 258 "kb" AMD SATA Disk installation driver; maybe it was placed in the wrong spot on the ASUS site.

So, i've been following this thread for a while. I finally picked one of these up off of newegg for $409.

At first i was extremely disappointed with the performance of the laptop, and i assumed it was due to the Asus bloatware. I was only getting 80fps in source using the "source stress test" with settings on recommended (high), overclocking the cpu to 2.2 upped my avg fps to 98 but i knew something wasn't right. YES i am positive my video settings for xfire and high performance were set properly. I attempted uninstalling all of the Asus bloatware and doing a proper update of the video driver and ended up with the same results. The laptop was slow, video drivers were buggy, everything about it sucked.

Today i completed a fresh load of windows and drivers. With the same settings in source i am getting an average of 170fps using the source stress test. The power of a fresh load of windows!

Cant wait to repaste the gpu and cpu and get into some more OC with bf3.

I haven't read this whole thread yet and it doesn't seem searchable. Has anyone actually updated the cpu to an A8 yet? And does anyone know if the laptop supports it?

Hi guys. I've bought this laptop like 2 weeks ago. Very please about the performance so far. But, do you guys have problem with heat? I'm playing stock cpu/gpu w/o OC and i get like 80-83C. I'm planning on repaste and heatsink mod it soon like a kind of this one: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/608772-k53ta-bbr6-cooling-mods.html#post7882947. Also when I try to OC the gpu, as soon as I hit the Apply button, I got the damn BSOD under 11.12 amd drivers :O Any help/advice? thank you
