Anyone try Guild Wars 2 yet. I installed the 12.7b drivers but no matter what setting I use high perf or power saving the fps is still the same. I'm running the game on auto detect which is pretty much the mid level graphics setting and I had to drop the shaders to low because in certain areas it would drop into the teens. Overall it's anywhere between like 22fps-35 in most areas and goes to 50+ when not many people are around. I'm playing on native resolution with the cpu oc'd at 2.6. Gpu oc didn't do anything for fps really.

lower the cpu OC. you might be throttling.

2.6 is way high for an A6-3400.

if cool n quiet is enabled, it's probably slamming down to 800mhz just to keep cool.

Thanks for the info! I will try lowering it slightly and see if that helps. I've played Diablo 3 at the same settings without a hitch just wondering if something is wrong or if this is the best performance I can expect out of gw2. I mean witcher 2 plays better mostly than gw2. I guess being a mmo you have to expect the performance to suffer some. Where do I go to check the cool and quiet setting?

Well at first I thought this thread died and I was really sad, but its good news that people are still active on this thing.

So to whoever asked regarding a bluetooth dual band wireless card for this laptop this is the link Amazon.com: Bigfoot Networks KillerN-1202 Notebook Wireless Card: Computers & Accessories

I hope you all are well along with your laptops. I am wondering where the next big modable laptop is that everyone is going to next?

You need to turn on the GPU(running something in high performance mode) to OC the GPU.

What RAM do you recommend? My Asus A53z has one stick of 4 GB RAM. It's some strange brand. I was thinking about buying two new sticks of 4 GB RAM for 8 GB total.

    Which would be the better buy, K53TA or K55DR (A8-4500, 7640G + 7470M)
I think i read earlier that the A8 is slower and the gpu is much slower than the 6720G2 , or even the 6650m.
Always a pain when the newer model performs worse than the older model if so!

after reading about gw2 on the web, it may be that the game is badly coded, or the driver just sucks.

a8 is def slower, unless you only do integer computations and encryption stuff.
For everyday stuff, the old A6 is faster when slightly overclocked.

7470m is weak as hell. Why even pair it in crossfire .....

I would get the 6650m over that garbage.

What do you think about Asus K53tk, I'm about to purchase it? Most of its hardware is just newer versions of K53TA hardware, but it has less RAM (I'll upgrade it anyways) and 320 GB hdd (enough for me, and if it is slow I will upgrade it to SSD or 7200 rpm hdd) and best thing is that new Asus K53TK is cheaper than refurbished K53TA. ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS K53TK

i'm assuming you've done your research.

but if there's core i5 with dedicated gpu at least radeon 7670 or gt630 for about the same price, you should also consider that.

Funny, but at this price range in my country you usually would find i3 with anything less powerful than GeForce 540m or i5 with GeForce 610m/ radeon 7470. And sometimes (at price range 500-600$) you can get i7 laptop without discrete GPU or with useless GeForce 610m. :D
So I think that this is the best deal i could get+ it has 3 year warranty. I just wanted to know, if somebody could show me even better deals, but it seems that I have chosen the best. :)

Unfortunately over here the only thing you can get in that range is an ivy bridge/hd4000. Debating if it's worth the extra $150-200 for an hp Intel, though I may build a mitx mini rig for games instead.

I am interested in changing the max reported voltage in the bios from 1.2875 to 1.3XXX, and am wondering if anyone has thoughts on this or perhaps an insight on how to do so.
The a6-3400m max is baffelingly reported differently across different laptops and im wondering; why?
I also wonder if changing the bios reported voltage max has been done on laptops with success before.
There should (hopefully) be no difference with the hardware's ability to perform at a higher level, as is obvious with those models which come with higher voltages, the question is how do we do so, and is it possible throughout?

Any insight at all is greatly appreciated.
also I Haz a Ton of custom internal cooling mods so that should not be a problem.
    and long live the lounge.

the voltage appears to be hardcoded in the cpu. not the bios.

    that's why everyone's is different.

Mine has 1.4 max, higher than any other A6 i've seen, but undervolts like azz. Seems to OC like azz too. Gets hot fast.

Thanks Link, I was pretty suprised when I tried it on my 4.4ghz 2500k gtx 480 desktop and it was chugging along in the busy areas in the 40fps range at max details and 1080p. Prob the game itself.

    Hi!

I need a little help. I have a K53TA notebook. Yesterday, I installed Windows 8 and 12.8 driver. My problem is, sometimes i see stripes/lines on the top of the screen. I had this problem on Windows 7 too, but on Win7 these problem comes only after hibernation. Anybody have these problems too? What can be the solution?

Yeah that's what I thought. That's how it was with the PLL oc's I've done in the past but I was hoping perhaps it was some sort of bios revision difference on manufacturing. But the cpu's limit being read makes more sense. Also I would like to thank you for posting all that you have about the k53ta. And also about the newer laptop that certainly did not meet a lot of peoples expectations.

    DOUBLE POST PREVENTION:
On a side note I have slapped the 12.8 whql on mine and will be doing some benching with it. I found a foreign site with some nice things to say about it with the k53ta so I decided why not. Plus that stupid upgrade notice from 12.7B was geting annoying.

i7 with a 610m? Radeon 7470? What's the point? What bizarro-world do you live on?

3510mx is on the way =D. Almost time to re-enable Crossfire for those 80 extra shaders and see what happens. Not to mention cooling mods and a slathering of ChillFactor III.

That is my point- most people read i7 and geforce (these brands for some seem powerful) and buy sh*ty laptops without reading full spec-sheet. Finding and getting good lappy for good price (like k53ta and k53tk) is hard these days...

AMD A8-3550MX I think is better than 3510mx :) more power, same TDP...

Same chip; the 3550 just has a higher stock clock. I got the 3510 for $65 USD, while the cheapest 3550 was about $150.
Only a couple of clicks and mine will perform the same.

Not to double post, but the 3510 is in and the difference is noticeable. EVE runs with full AA (just cruising around, no big space battle yet) without a hitch with just the APU's 6620m, and that's also not plugged in. It also boots quicker, which surprised me. No extensive tests yet; too much games, no time for testing. Stock clocks. I think some of this may be attributed to the 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 I stuck in there.

    problem.jpg

    Hi all!
So here is my problem. During game my CPU speed is constantly changing. I am on high performance mode, 1.05V is my stock voltage for 1.4Ghz but its stable even on 2100Mhz (tested by prime). A6-3400m, 1*4gb+1*2gb, 12.8 catalyst, win 7 64bit, dual-graphics off, played bf-bc2 (full screen).
During prime the clock is stable.
Tried k10stat and amd pscheck too.
    Is this normal?
    Thx!

    it's throttling.
that is normal behavior for this setup. 2ghz seems to be the sweet spot without too much heat or throttling.

Throttling usually occurs when you're using the cpu and dgpu together.
It seems this is just how amd designed it.

there is a way around it though, by setting all the p-states to the same speed. This locks the speed and prevents it from decreasing.

you have to monitor your temps this way though. it gets hot fast.

    Hi there.
I also bought couple of days ago A8-3510MX.
Unfortunately in my case memory still runs on 666Mhz (1333) speed. I have 2x4GB Micron 800.0 MHz (PC3-12800).
I was bought this CPU with a view to use full speed of my memory - but no luck.

What in Your case ? Your memory reach full 800Mhz (1600) ?

3510mx will not work as it is a 45w part going into where a 35w part is. 3500m(wat I have is what you want) or 3520m(even better) are 35watt parts compatible with the k53ta, also I would suggest to make sure your ram sticks are identical model as the dual channel memory working properly can give a 4-8fps benefit in all games. also 12.1 drivers seem to be where it is at for this lappy.

    You mean K53Ta laptop? - Yes..of course.
The same socket, same platform, same core.. The difference is only in frequency and TDP. Look: LINK

Temps are the same in my case - on windows, no load 42-46'C. On games temp reaches 80-83'C. So similar to my old A6-3400M (or maybe even better on win with no load).

But... A8 support DDR3-1600. In my case this speeds not working.. maybe it is about BIOS or MB..

Mine is running at full speed. I updated the bios and did mods to it according to earlier posts (much thanks to Link). Not RAM related mods, though. It might have to do with your Micron RAM; I put in Corsair Vengeance and everything registers fine. If you can get some other RAM to try out to see if it works, I'd do that. A lot of people prefer Kingston HyperX; I'm just sticking with what I usually use.

The MX works fine in our laptops; it's the same socket and, for the most part, the same chip, just a higher TDP. It's the same as in a desktop: my desktop has a chip with a 95 watt TDP, but my motherboard can handle one with a 125 watt TDP or a 65 watt TDP, or whatever, really. The MX APUs are the only ones that handle DDR3 1600. The higher TDP should also allow for better overclocking potential. Just have to watch temperatures and battery a little more closely (use good paste), but so far, mine has been the same as my A6, even with the higher clock.
The RAM is a Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 kit; works great, and I'm using the newest drivers, and I'm not having any issues whatsoever. Everything runs exceptionally well.

Hope all of that answers other potential upgrade-ee's questions as well.

    Hello everyone!

My K53TA has been giving me some problems.. The laptop goes into battery mode by itself when plugged in and to put it back in A/C mode, I have to plug out power adapter (from laptop) and plug it back in. It does this constantly and gets really annoying after a while... Its most likely a hardware problem but I'm not sure if its adapter (seems fine to me) or A/C port itself.. I had some terrible experience with RMA in past and not sure to trust them again, and I really want to fix it myself since I need laptop for school and can't afford to send it away for weeks or even months.. any suggestions/help please

Does the plug spin easily, and when you move the plug around (spinning or kinda finagling it side-to side), does it do it then?
The plug is really easy to change. It's not soldered onto the board, and it's held into the casing (Comes right out, no tabs or anything).

a lot, i have to unplug/re-plug over and over so it resumes normally (AC/MODE)

I also noticed when it goes in battery mode, the power button light (white light) and bottom green lights start flashing

now that you mention it, yes it does move easily when i swing from one side to another, however it doesn't happen then

you might have a bad power brick.

are you still under warranty? did you buy your laptop with a credit card?

usually credit cards give you an extra year warranty. they reimburse you after you buy the replacement part.

Bring your laptop to Best Buy, and plug in one of their asus demo laptop's power brick into your laptop, and see if it keeps going into battery mode.

if it looks like a bad power brick, you might have just saved yourself a big RMA headache, since they might be able to cross ship just the power brick

You can check if it's a loose socket by powering off your laptop, unplug battery, then stick a pen inside the socket and see if the needle moves around.
