In this situation it sucks to have intel because there's really no way for you to OC, but that i3 isnt comparable to the A6 anyways. I now have a laptop with an i5 instead of the A6 and the i5 performs better even when compared to my A6 @ 2.4GHz

the reason why 'nobody' bought the k53e is because of the hd3000. If you're not gaming you can be fine with that but if you are gaming like a lot of dudes here, than it's crap.

the hd3000 was designed to use up to 1.8gb memory as needed. You're not going to gain anything by modifying the bios.

but feel free to try if you have AMI bios.

    well of course.

the A6 was never a match for the i5, even when overclocked.
A6 would have major heat issues, while the i5 would run cool.

Actually my A6 ran considerably cooler than my i5 does, by 5-10C. Similar chassis

of course you can brick it.

    under load?

at 2.4 running for several hours, the A6 would get into the 90C's. You're implying the i5 regularly hovers around 100 C ?

I have not seen an Intel Core i3 or i5 running into the 90's under normal full load.

I have overclocked my A6 to 2.8 ghz, ran BF3 while internet was stilling running, for about 3-5 hrs, and my temps never reached above 84C. Well my room was very cool, but still, the temps were very nice.

    Yes under load.

My A6 NEVER ran hotter than 81C and would typically sit around 74-75C unless it was super hot in my house. My i5 almost always sits at 81C but can get up to 84-85C if it's warmer ambient.

Both were repasted with Antec Formula 7.

Not the best test ever but I didn't have much installed. If anything i think it gave better performance on minecraft slightly and put out about the same amount of heat.

Compared to 12.7 Beta that is

and as far as windows 8 I have no idea as I don't have it.

Where are you guys downloading the drivers from? I tried on the website and when I get to the amd catalyst mobility download and click "start download", then save, it says "AMD Catalyst Mobility download is cancelled". I've tried downloading 12.8 to different locations etc. and it's still not working. If someone can please tell an alternative place to download the drivers that would be well appreciated.
Edit: Never mind I got it :)

    [Bug]

Well I noticed with 12.8 that when i went into hybernation mode and came back out of it i had a huge graphical problem on the top right and left of my screen and then it flickered once i was on my desktop. So now I'm back on 12.7

    hybernation mode sucks.
    I turned that off.

However, i tried putting laptop to sleep, and turning back on, and the webcam became disabled and unrecognized. I had to hold the power button to reset the bios, and then it fixed itself.
I tried it again, and my wifi wouldn't connect because the config settings wouldn't stick.

I don't believe a graphics driver can cause this crap. I think it's Windows.
I'd have to test 12.7b to see if these issues happen.

    ok.. two issues..

my touchpad has failed lately.. even the slightest touch on it screws up the touchpad.. my question is..

is there anyway to open the laptop and clean out the touchpad?

otherwise, how can i disable the touchpad? fn+f9 does nothing.

secondly, i tried doing the modified bios with the sata3, and it actually made my SSD loading SLOWER. if it helps, i removed the 2.5 HDD from the back and just placed the SSD right into the back port, without a sata cable. am i doing something wrong?

i take back what i said.

catalyst 12.8 does appear to mess with sleep mode.

with 12.7, i don't have wireless connection issues when resuming from sleep.

oh well, i couldn't tell any difference anyway.

time to report some more bugs

my 1 year warranty is officially over today.
Any repairs will be covered 1 more year by my credit card.

anyway, now i can do some cooling mods.

I wanted to see the cooling effect of drilling rows of vent holes beneath the fan, without drilling anything yet.
If you lift the keyboard up, you can see the big fan hole, and by tilting up the kb, you can allow massive air to enter that hole.

it dropped my load temp from 82C to 72C while oc'd at 2ghz. hot damn.
On gpu test, it dropped from 80 to 72C.
So i can expect similar gains with holes drilled.
If you don't want to drill holes, you can just leave the keyboard tilted/propped up, and let air cool from the top.

The only other change i noticed is that it won't suck as much air from the front vents, and the trackpad area gets a little bit hotter. But even at stock settings with the keyboard clamped down, the palmrest and trackpad areas are hot when using both cpu and gpu.
I don't know what potential negative effect that would have.
but it surely does cool the cpu big time.

actually.. figured out the touchpad.. for some reason the drivers were borked.. fixed them

here is my question.. can we get sata 3 speeds on the hdd bay? or does it have to be through the optical bay? (ie the dvd rom drive has to be unplugged)

also: could it be that im getting slower speeds with the new bios because i didn't image the OS as sata 3? should i re-image it with the upgraded bios?

There's been a thread about the 000f firmware for M4 with folks talking about slower speed than previous firmwares (and even beachballing hard when paired with a Mac).

The talk about slower performance starts from Page 4 of this thread on Crucial's forums: Re: M4 Firmware 000f is now available - Page 4 - Crucial Community

SATA III 6GBps mod to the bios unlocks 6GBps for both the main and the DVD tray SATAs. Otherwise both the main and DVD tray SATAs run at SATA II 3GBps speed.

you don't need the k53tam modded bios for graphics.

just update graphics driver to 12.7beta.

the only bios you need is the one for sata 6gbit for faster ssd

I am still sitting on 11.12, so this 12.8 whql is a separate branch or graduated 12.7 ? dmn confusing amd and messy driver update

Edit: Tried 12.8 it starts with a fuel service being stopped working, hence disabled that service so far so good
note: fuel service is responsible for cpu power and power profile, overdrive etc
edit II: Yea Graphical corruption is more frequent with this release

not sure if there any atheros that do that, but intel 6230 does . However the computer cant get a clean restart using intel cards. Windows is off but power will not be off if you click restart. Shutdown and boot fine though.

It would be fun if the next time they put the heatsink, cpu and gpu on the other side (right side). Because its a fact that the palmrest and the wasd keys are getting hot with theses mods while gaming and oc'ed. When I play bf3 the palmrest is kinda hot!

LOL i had the same problem. Thought my laptop was broken so had it repaired by Asus... When my laptop was back from RMA installed the drivers again because they restored the laptop to out of the box. And it started flickering again. Now running latest drivers from Asus website and it's all gone! But think i gonna install the 12.7 because they seem to work good as far as ive heard.

yeah, i didn't drill holes beneath the fan because it would disrupt airflow through the case.

the cpu fan sucks in air from the front of the case and draws out all the hot air inside the case.
when it has direct access to cool air, as occurs when you tilt kb up or drill hole beneath fan, the palmrest gets warm and mousepad gets HOT, since that is where the gpu and cpu are.
Heat is trapped there, and I think it could lead to premature mobo failure.

If i were to drill holes, i'd drill some small holes near the existing vents and see if that increases airflow while maintaining the same airflow path.

    Hey all,

Been absent from this thread for many months. Haven't really been playing games too much but wanted to get up to speed on the latest graphics drivers and info about GPU overclocking/switchable graphics.

Going to try and read backwards as much as I can but any quick info is appreciated. :)

First question though: I upgraded to 12.8 drivers this weekend. Seemed to install and reboot with no issue but now I can't open CCC or equivalent. For example, when I right click on desktop and select either 'Graphics properties' or 'Configure switchable graphics' the cursor changes to waiting for a second but nothing happens. Have any K53TA owners seen this? Unfortunately, I think this was happening BEFORE the driver upgrade as well...

EDIT: Nevermind, was able to get that working with a full uninstall through control panel, driver sweep, reboot, etc. Didn't think that would be necessary...
