    MEMTEST PASSED
    Windows 7 Professional CLEAN INSTALL
    Latest Chipset driver
Crash after install Catalyst 14.9 64 bit .
The only way to avoid BSOD is boot into safe mode, disable CCC from start up process.
I still get bluescreen whenever I run game.
Anyone face similar issue before this?

This sounds like GPU issue, because the GPU cannot be initialized.
BSOD happens while the GPU is being initialized then this could mean a defective GPU.

disable ULPS, able to view it on GPU-z and OpenhardwareMonitor
still can overclock it. I just flashed 214 bios with MOD 1GB on APU graphic card. seems like doesn't BSOD but driver crash. I disassemble my laptop, don't have thermal grease, will continue to debug on Monday.

EDIT : can I fix this by using reflow method?

    TLDR; Skip to bolded part

Hello all, first time poster. Like many of you I was lucky enough to snag one of these back in fall of 2011. I actually ending driving to a best buy the next state over to get the nearest one I could find. 340 miles round trip! Its been the best laptop I've owned as I believe the gaming laptop hype is sort of a scam, no offense to anyone. My laptop was the victim of a bad drop onto concrete last year and I managed to keep it together as best I could. I was doing some yearly maintenance on the machine and unfortunately almost all of the plastic "nuts" have broken leaving only 2 screws keeping the thing together and no support for the hinges. I followed this thread on and off for many years and I recall seeing that the A53 parts are almost identical.

Im in search of a replacement chassis.

I have the bbr6 model and I know the top portion with the touchpad from the a53 is compatible, and I assume the bottom portion is but was hoping for some reassurance from someone.

This is the part I plan on buying and was not sure of compatibility.
    New Asus K53 Series Bottom Base Case Cover 13GN7110P020 1 AP0K3000300 K53TA A53U | eBay

If anyone has a retired k53ta I am interested in the body parts, we could do ebay transaction or possibly paypal.

I believe you have the right part for bottom case cover. It was a topic brought up once a while back in this thread>>
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/601808-k53ta-best-deal-ever-could-435.html#post9035819

Looks like it should work and it costs only around $36 to 40 so not too expensive. I've kept mine in pristine condition as it mostly sits at home hardly moving around, but not for sale :). So good luck with the repair.

Just letting everyone know a new driver came out.
14.12 whql omega SG fix>> Modded Catalyst drivers for switchable graphics notebooks
It feels about the same as the previous 2 or 3 beta gfx drivers, so no big deal imo. If you play new games it may be of interest. Mahmoudelfar made an SG fix mod for Win7x64 and Win8.1x64.

update: Jan 2015: Mahmoudelfar made another mod >>Modded Catalyst 15.X (14.502.1002) WHQL 12 January 2015 (based on Dell Alienware amplified gfx driver) -- But I didn't try this one since above 14.12 has been fine for me. Also I haven't been playing latest PC games with this laptop (just playing older 1-4 year old games).

A few people did this mod with no problem. I assume all should be ok but I thought it wasn't worth the extra money and trouble considering it's performing solidly the way it is with the A6. Someone once mentioned there may be more heat from an A8, but not sure really. This poster below really praises it:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/k53ta-owners-lounge.607232/page-5#post-9258236

I'd just save the money and use a desktop with better graphics to play more demanding games & use the money on other devices eg. firetv or other media players etc for multimedia to take the wear and tear off our laptops and desktops.

Hi. I have had one of these notebooks since they came out and never had any issues with amd drivers really. I have started using the modded drivers from mahmoud elfar and they have been good. But now any driver since 14.4, doesn't matter weather it is amd's driver or mahmoud elfars modded driver, it seems to cause my notebook to run really slow. It just starts locking up on me for a few seconds and stuff, ccc keeps crashing. Every driver since 14.4. Any ideas whats up? Running windows 7 still. I would really like to get 14.12 working normally.

Yeah most of the last 4 or 5 drivers feel about the same. I think older drivers tend to run more stable and smooth, but maybe slightly slower on some games.

It's an old laptop so maybe some normal maintenance is needed --just a guess(eg. malware/spyware or antivirus cleaning, defragmenting, registry cleaning, etc & clear up hdd space--always good to have atleast 65gb to 100gb free on C drive ).
I use avast av, ccleaner, adwcleaner, mbam, spywareblaster, Auslogics BoostSpeed, Wise Registry Cleaner, and O&O Degrag Pro. All of this keeps pc running like new. I've been running all latest AMD gfx drivers fairly ok. But I do see a hitch from time to time, & occasional crashes of some games, & crashes of explorer if I try to open folders too quickly on the desktop. Nothing too intolerable.

I've tried from several fresh installs, using DDU to fully remove any remnants of the old driver. I have yet to try running windows 8.1 and using the latest drivers that way.

Not sure how to go about installing 8 without losing my recovery partition though.

Can't believe it!!! Dying light is 100% playable on this notebook using crossfire.
13.12 drivers running it for me, just make a profile for it in ccc and turn on surface format optimization and set texture filtering quality to Performance, Dual Graphics to 1x1 Optimization
Game settings for me are vsync off, low textures, medium shadow map, medium foliage, minimum draw distance, all nvidia options off, motion blur off, film grain off. Funny thing is the game still looks better than next-gen consoles at low settings. What I find neat is the hardware in this notebook is not that much different from the hardware in the One and Ps4.

update: As of the 1.5 patch to Dying light it runs much better on AMD systems and crossfire configurations. Especially with the 1x1 Optimization enabled under the ccc profile for the game, surface format optimization now works correctly. Performance is smooth with the above settings, feels like it is above 30fps.

Thanks for the gaming feedback scar420 on game settings profile. I haven't been playing any serious games lately, but maybe I'll try to find Dying Light in the future some day. Pretty sweet that you think our laptop (&probably many PCs with better hardware) still looks better than a One & Ps4.
I'm currently using Win7 64bit AMD 14.12 omega modded drivers, and they seem fine but I haven't been playing latest games to fully test them out. I think it's ok to be using any of these past drivers (14.4,14.9, 14.11, or 14.12) since not all games may play right on the latest gfx. I hope this laptop gets us through 1-2 more years playing games reasonably well just by turning some game settings down.

Update: Recently I learned of a workaround to get locked switchable gfx apps (eg. video players&browsers) to be set to high performance mode. Just make another copy of executable & rename it; then add it to switchable gfx list and it won't show up as locked. Someone on guru3d mentioned it here>> http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=396648

Well.. after a few years I just sold my Gaming tower (Fx8350 with GTX 760 GPU).. I sold my Lenovo Y580 and I'm back using this laptop! I was wondering.. are you able to overclock the gpu again? I'm still using k10stat for the CPU but when I try to overclock the GPU (who really needs it) it just not doing anything.. I tried MSI Afterburner and Sapphire Trixx without success.. I'm on the latest gpu driver from AMD. ULPS is disabled too. Any hints?

go to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\MSIAfterburner.cfg and modify this:
    [ATIADLHAL]
    Enable = 1

At Unofficial.. it's not supposed to be the sentence "I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it" and not 1?

I'm using 14.4 beta modded like I said and even without any overclock I'm still able to play battlefield 4 at 1366x768 low details @ 40-50 fps.. i'm really impressed that the modded drivers almost double my framerate over the amd one.

That's great. I haven't installed BF4 yet, since my hdd is full of older games. I last tried BF3 and overclock, but it was unstable and screen scrambles into blinking blocks so I can't see anything (on later 14.9 modded drivers + newer). IMO, Last 4 modded drivers have nearly reached their maximum performance so any driver since 14.4 are fine to be on today. And oc'ing gpu is overrated, and really isn't needed most times.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you need GPU oc then do the registry fix for disabling ULPS.
    GPU Overclocking Instructions :

    0) Install MSI Afterburner.
    1) Then edit the registry, [with HTWINGNUT's manual registry fix download-for Disabling ULSP] >>

    ulps_enable_disable for 6650.zip
    2) Restart COMPUTER
3)Then get MSI Afterburner, but before launching it edit the MSIafterburner.cfg file in notepad. Find the "Unofficial Overclocking EULA" line and copy/paste exactly this:

I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

4)In the MSI config under "Unofficial Overclocking Mode", there is also a field next to it for a 0 or 1. --to enable overclock, change the value to 1.
That's it! It's still useful in few games, but causes laptop to overheat faster, so ymmv.

For those who arent aware, You can use Funkymikes SG patcher to get your SG menu back. Just use the official drivers from AMD, install them and then run the SG patcher, it will make the registry adjustments to bring back the SG menu. I am currently running 13.12 now as I found out the 14 series suck for Diablo 3...which is the main game i play daily. Dying light still runs on 13.12 just fine, the recent 1.5 patch optimized AMD systems.
Here is a link to where you can get the SG patcher. hxxp://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=394360

Just a heads up, when you run the patcher and click the button to patch it will seem like it freezes (not sure whats up with that) and it looks like its not doing anything...thats what it does for me...I just let it sit for 5 min and then end task and reboot...SG menu is there and fully working.

Also does anyone have any info on APU upgrades for this system? Can we upgrade the APU and keep crossfire functionality? I've read in a different thread on this forum that it will take an A8...but the guy provides no details on how he upgraded his.

So long as it still matches as a valid crossfire config (IE in some cases where the APU along is now faster than the orginal + card combo) then it should still work.

Windows 8.1 doesn't have drivers for this notebook? I know asus doesnt have much. As for the wireless driver I think you could find some working ones for windows 8.1 here https://www.atheros.cz/. AMD's 14.12 chipset package has all the drivers for sata, ahci, usb..etc for windows 7,8,8.1,10 as far as I know. But I thought 8.1 had the touchpad drivers and all that other crap, or am I mistaken?.
I am interested in installing windows 8.1 to take advantage of the gaming performance it offers, but I am not sure about losing the restore partition, is it possible to just upgrade to 8.1 and keep the partition intact?
Wonder if its better to just hold out for windows 10...seeing as windows 7 users will get windows 10 for free. I wonder how the tech preview runs on this notebook.

Hi everyone, i would like to know if someone has the moded bios file (214), with the sata 6 fix and the switchable graphics fix as well, i've been trying to find it, but every link on this thread sends me to an error page, i also tried to modify the official 214 file with AMIBCP, but i only know how to modify it for the graphics fix, i have no idea what to modify for the sata 6 fix, if anyone has it i would really appreciate it.

Yes, I included both fixed mode+non fixed mode BIOS files. I assume you mean "fixed mode" and not SG modded drivers. The original file was non fixed mode, while I modified the other file myself to fixed mode (but untested by me,so use at own risk). SGmod is mainly determined by CCC drivers created by modders so that's something else.
Note: Our Bios mod for Fixed mode will show up only for supported drivers (Anything before AMD 14.6). Starting from AMD 14.6 and newer, the Fixed Mode stopped working since AMD dropped support for it preventing that part of CCC from showing up. So on latest drivers it won't matter which bios you use, unless a future driver brings back Fixed Mode menu.

NOW people at Guru3d shared a Method using DLL files to get the benefits of any of the past or future graphic drivers without going through multiple installation procedures.

This is useful for us since we can regain FIXED Mode by installing older modded AMD 14.4 drivers again, & just use latest DLL files from later drivers to run recent games. You can also run older games that ran better with older drivers just by placing older DLL files into game exe folder.
Note: This method was needed to run latest game GTA V in Fixed Mode so it runs off faster dGPU.>> http://mahmoudelfar.blogspot.com/2015/06/fix-for-grand-theft-auto-v-on.html

update: I went back & installed 14.4 since they were the last supported Fixed Mode drivers, and I believe AMD 14.4 were the best optimized gfx for HD AMD 6000 series, especially for 2+ yr old games. Things just feel more smooth and stable than recent drivers. It may be due to the aim at optimizing HD 7000 & 8000 series the past 1 1/2 years and dropping support for 6000 series. So in the future I'll just use necessary DLL files from a specific driver for each game that it runs best with. (eg. 13.12 or older, 14.4 thru 14.12, or newer 15x driver DLL files.)

Hey everyone, I just finished up fixing a k53ta( replaced broken screen and keyboard, moved the hdd to a caddy and made a ssd my main drive, installed windows 8.1 and every driver on the asus website except for the asus crapware, and cleaned dust out of the internals) and I want to know what I should do next. I want to play games to the best of this laptops ability, and I have no clue where to start. I've messed around with k10stat a bit, but I really have no idea what I'm doing with it so I haven't attempted anything beyond OCing to 2.7 ghz. I would appreciate any advice on what drivers and programs to have installed. Thanks!

P.S. Am I better off having windows 7 for this laptop, or in your opinion should I keep windows 8.1? Also, I attempted to install a intel centrino advanced-n 6230 wireless card and could not get the pc to boot up with it. Am I doing something wrong?

turn off the w.e crossfire bull crap.
CPU, keep it at around 2.0-2.2, anything more usually is too much heat when gaming.

not sure how it handle today's AAA title, but it should play 2-3 old AAA game at low- mid 768p. D3, POE, and LOL~ etc should play relatively well.

I tried an upgrade from win7 to win10 and the 7670m would not go to sleep ever. It just stayed at 150/300 mhz state.

Maybe there is a fix but I did not have the time to try much at this time, so I restored an acronis backup.

BIOS, and EC usually need to be tested and certified under Win10 by manufacturer, otherwise these could be unforeseen issues related to Win10 entirely.

Came here to see if someone had problems with windows 10, i upgraded and now i regret it, my k53ta is currently using an a6-3410mx, and under windows 10, it just doesn't switch to the hd 6650, i'm always running on the 6520g (i'm also using the original bios from asus, i did this to prevent any problem with the windows 10 upgrade)

You can always roll back within the first 30 days if you want to wait a while longer before trying again.

Last week I upgraded to Windows 10 and Catalyst 15.7.1, no issues to speak of yet. Running the K43TA214.SATA6 BIOS (stupid fast SSD speeds) with mods to make the 6650 the primary card ( http://infovtech.blogspot.com/2013/03/how-to-changeswitching-k43tak53ta.html)

I use the K53TA for hobby game development using Unreal Engine 4 (very basic scenes), and I haven't noticed any major difference in performance between 15.7 and 14.4 with SG mod/fix; however, again I'm developing/testing not really gaming.

Unrelated to Windows 10 upgrade the GPU has been running crazy hot (probably dust/air flow issues) and the left hinge is about to burst through the plastic. Doubt it will last much longer, but I'm going to keep using this thing until it breaks. Hands down the best budget laptop I've owned.
