yes a3r0x, as long as you install vista on the SSD first. all the upgrades check for a previous version of windows before they will install.

This is kinda lame specially with SSD degrading with writing... I was gona HD Erase to upgrade to 7 to get back to fresh/new speeds. But this might make me go OEM ='(.

My upgrade disks finally arrived to day and congrats to Asus for producing an upgrade path that was absolutely painless and easy. Only little extra was upgrading the DVD firmware but that;s not a big deal and the drivers/utilities install disk worked perfectly.
Only thing I had to do after was install the latest Video drivers - all in all a painless and simple procedure.

Thx for the reply, but, could I install the old Vista on the SSD using recovery CD's etc or by any other way (without having to buy a new OS ofc)?

I manage to use Orev guide here on NBR, with his utility i got my CDKey out before installing the SSD, then i used my desktop OEM Vista DVD and just follow orev guide n work like a charm.

You can use the recovery disks on the new HDD, and you can also use the CD Key located on the bottom of you G51..

Ok, thats good. So the procedure would be:
    1) Format the old HDD
    2) Place the SSD in the slot where the old HDD was
    3) Use ASUS recovery CD to install VISTA on the SSD (using the key at the bottom of the notebook)
    3) Upgrade to Win7 (Clean Install tbp coz i want maximum performace)

    Something like that?

No reason to do this first, i mean you can, but there is no need, you can even leave it out if you want, and just have the SSD installed, and then just add the hdd. In case something goes wrong for what ever reason you still have the original drive with vista, as well as if you want a dual boot or in case you dont like win7 etc. I would still recommend you read you internal cdkey with orev utility before you format it, just in case something goes wrong, you will still have a working cdkey that will avoid dealing with ms calling center.

I had a brief look at the guide, and with the internal cd-key etc so ye I will leave the HDD, just in case.

Im still a confised with the process, so ill write my procedure revised in detail:

1)Use Orev Utility to get the activation/ internal CD-key
    2) Insert new SSD into the computer
    3) Use ASUS Recovery 2 CD's to install Windows (Will I be able to boot form them?)
    4) I do not write the CD-key yet
    5) complete the installation
    6) Clock the activation.exe (previously saved on a USB stick)
    7) Clean install Win7 on the SDD.

Will that work? I'm mainly worried on how to install Vista on the SSD i.e will I be able to boot form the ASUS CD's?

    1. boot from recovery DVD, install vista.
    2. boot from win7 DVD, install win7.
    3. Done.

In addition to this do I need to do extract the internal CD-key, because the guide mentioned that otherwise I would need to call Microsoft and answer questions etc which can be problematic? Or there is no need to activate Vista?

the key on the bottom of your laptop should work just fine..it did for me when I installed a retail copy of vista. That is, if you need to give any key at all (the recovery disks enter the key+ activate for you) it will activate just the same, the new HDD won't have any issues.

EIement is right you don't need to extract, and the bottom sticker should work (but its different than the one you get with orev extractor utility), the bottom one is like any normal key, the one inside you avoid any activation (phone or internet), so over time if you are like me (i format a lot), it so nice to be able to activate without having to call MS and explain them that why you have to format for something that you already paid and own.

The good thing about orev way, is that you activate it thru his utility with your own cdkey, so its a valid thing, nothing ilegal, its just you can activate it as many times as you want. Overall you dont need to do the orev, for me its a convenience, to avoid MS calling centers, but the bottom key should work fine as well.

..Abula. you do not need the one inside. the Recovery disk AUTOMATICALLY INSERTS that key. Why do you think the recovery disks never ask you for a key?

    Hey guys,

How do you do a clean install with the Asus g51vx?

Being a former dell user, dell's were a piece of cake to do a clean install, but with the Asus, I don't even have a clue on where to begin. Plus I want to get rid of the partitions.

it's actually really easy. just pop the win7 disc in, reboot, hit esc, boot from cd, and follow the win7 install wizard. the 2nd or 3rd window will let you do whatever you want with your partitions. (i.e. delete the ones you don't want, then "extend" the one that's left to fill up the whole space).

afterwards, pop in the driver disc and install the video driver (186.40 i believe, you can also download 186.82 which seems to work well with the g51). I never installed anything else from that driver disc (just let windows update take care of it) and haven't had any problems.

if you want to use the media card reader or camera, then install those drivers from the cd too.

finally, if you want your touchpad to have separate sensitivity settings from a USB mouse, install the touchpad driver too. (otherwise not necessary)

Well I'm a tell you my experience,

First of all, in Belgium 5% of the population has a credit card. So it took me a month to find someone, who was willing to help me

    Here's a little timeline:

19-11-2009: Finally ordered my Upgrade Kit, Status: Fullfillment in progress
19-11-2009 till 4-12-2009: Sent several e-mails, called a few times for information, talked to ASUS support, NO CLEAR ANSWER
4-12-2009: 12 'o' clock: My status changed to "Order ready for export"
4-12-2009: 18 'o' clock: Status changed to "Order exported"

(I'm sorry if the terms aren't correct, I ordered it in French)

So today it's the 11-12-09, and I still didn't get anything...

how do u seperate ur touchpad sensitivity from the usb mouse? it really bothers me to use such low sens. on touchpad cuz if i bump it up in windows, it'll ruin my copperhead/mamba.

i checked the synaptics menu, it had sensitivity section below, but it was only for tapping pressure?

Mine arrived this morning and now I am performing a 'clean' installation from the disk I received.
Rebooted laptop and set Blue-ray drive as primary, disk booted up and basically after formatting C:\ everything is working fine.
So for those of you who thought you had to have Vista on your drive 1st, then upgrade, this is not the case, although this works fine also.
Hope you guys get your Copies soon.

i initially put in my serial number and the site said it didn't qualify for the upgrade. i noticed the battery had a different serial number, so i put that in and it happened to work
