Hi Ken and hello to the whole community here. :)

I am new here, but I am not new to the topic of graininess with ASUS notebooks.

I have been pursuing this issue with ASUS Germany for more than one month for my F3JP model.
You can see my posts about this at:
    http://www.notebookforums.com/thread173555-23.html

My efforts led to the recognition of the problem by ASUS Germany and they provided me with bios v205.t1 for F3JP.

Thank you Ken for uploading the bios v205.t1 here also. :)

I will keep you guys updated about the issue for F3JP whenever I get new information from ASUS Germany. ;)

    Hello guys, :)

At the other forum lot of people arounf europe complained that their local ASUS branch was not recognizing Screen graininess problem. They were getting totally wrong replies when they contact ASUS support.

I have forwarded this message to the ASUS support in Germany. :D
I have contacted the administrator called Kurim of the ASUS unofficial website ( www.asustreiber.de) which is actually run by ASUS support team here in Germany.

I told him that lot of people around EU are suffering because their local ASUS branch does not recognize grainy screen issue.

This is the reply I got today from my ASUS contact (Kurim) here in Germany:

i have forward the info to ASUS NL, ASUS CZ, ASUS IT, ASUS IB, ASUS UK.

    hope they use it.

I personally hope also that they will use this information to help the people there. ;)

    @Turbogear

Can you tell us what the improvements of the new bios version 205 are? and is this bios version stable as the bios version 203?

    Thanks for the effort.

I can tell you that this bios is very stable. I have not seen any problems with it until now.

I am not sure what ASUS has changed over the version v203. They did not provide that information to me.
They just sent me the bios without any change log. :(

What the support told me was that this bios does not seem to be beta version as v203 was.
He was not sure himself since he got just the bios itself from Taiwan without any additional information.
Now it is the Chineese new year there.
ASUS support in Germany will try to get more info maybe after the vacations are over in Taiwan.

If I get any updates, I will be happy to provide it here. :)

I have a z96j and have noticed the graininess issue since I got it last august. It is not until now that I have figured to fix this minor annoyance.

I tried using the winflash ultility. All seems well until the the boot up where it says, "unable to open the selected file" or something of that sort. Is there anyone here that wants to help me out?

    thanks in advance.

    Hello,

There is a simply way to flash your bios without the use of Winflash and you don't need an empty CD for that also.
I have posted it so many times on many different forums.

So here I cut and past it again. :D

usapatriot, Turbogear's trick worked on S96J, I just tested myself, thanks to him.

Also the new version 1201 is on the first page of this thread. :)

    You are most welcome. :)

I think this method I described for bios flashing works on many if not all the ASUS notebooks.

I read about it on the ASUS support Technical Documents website, but I cannot locate it anymore.

    Hey all,

I have an F3JP and wanted to grab the 205 bios update mentioned on the front page - it seems it's the only one with a bad link.

Could anyone provide a working link?

    Thanks so much :)

*I'm talking about the 205T1 bios - I currently have 205 on my laptop, but not 205T1 (i'
    m guessing these are different?)

I figured it out - the link to download the 205T1 bios update for the F3JP is incorrect... there is an extra "http://" appended onto the front of it.

    Just FYI :)

    Hi
I have a problem with my F3jp, wich, I suppose is graininess (or maybe i'm wrong?) .The problem is that what i see on my screen looks like it was behind a dirty glass. I loaded up BIOS 203 and nothing changed. Should i try 205 bios?
Or maybe i should get used to it? (don't like this option)
    Thanks

Try the 205t1 bios posted on the front page of this post, Errorx.

I notice that when looking at my screen from an angle, the white/greyish colors appear to become slightly grainy.. still! They don't appear to be as bad as before (or maybe im just telling myself that)... but they are still there.

At least for me, when looking at the screen from a somewhat frontward position... it looks great.

OK, I'll try 205t1. Hope it works becouse asus tech service here in Poland really sucks...
And i see a new 206 bios on asus website (but there isn't 205 bios, strange). Do you know something about this new one?

I was wondering the same thing, actually. I noticed the 206, but in it's fix list there was no listing of the grainy screen issues.

Is the 205t1 bios a one-off build to only fix the grainy screen issue? So confusing sometimes..

fix list? hmm, description of this bios is rather miserable ("Description: BIOS 206 System plays wave file and causes garbage sound. ") or maybe I missed something?

That's the main problem - their description for the 206 update is very vague. Also, asus never officially released a bios to fix any grainy screen issues for the F3JP.

Most of the time you can assume that the most current bios also rolls up all other bios fixes below it (ie. 206 bios has fixes, plus the 205 and on down). So even if we did update to 206, we probably wouldn't be getting a fix for our screens since nothing on their site says as much.

I should just email asus about this... I have to know!

I just got an A8Js after having a Z96Js. I had fixed the graininess on the Z96Js with a bios update, but is there a new BIOS that fixes the graininess issue on the A8Js? (I had thought that it was an issue with the ATI cards, but this has NVIDIA graphics.) I appreciate your help.

I have just got the F3jp and it had the graininess problem. It came with bios version 202, and because of the problem I upgraded to bios version 207 and I still had the same problem. After reading this thread I updated to bios version 205t1, and it fixed the graininess... :)

    Anyone tried bios 206?

Or someone could upload winflash, cause I cant download it from the asus link :(

Holy jebus, I've made 5 trips to the service centre because of this and thought the laptop was done for as my photography/design rig, but I can't believe I was too dumb to not check this site (actually I did, but searched for 'noisy screen' as opposed to grainy, whoops; and the thread wasn't stickied back then). But anyway, HUGE thanks to the OP for the bios! You rock.

Also, you do not need WinFlash to update the BIOS. If you press F2 during boot, and go into BIOS set-up, there is an option to flash the BIOS from there, which worked just fine for me.

Just a quick thanks to Ken, as I see your name over every forum post, on every forum, for this issue. Kudos.

I have the v206 bios now from the website, but I'm going to go ahead and try the v205 you guys have been talking about. I'm not sure if the screen on my fj3p has the issue, but the screen right now is my biggest disappointment so I'm hoping this clears it up and graininess is the issue.

I'll edit after update and let people know if they are not sure they have the problem and currently have the Asus released v206 bios.

Edit: I installed the v205 from the frontpage using the Asus Recovery (f4). The screen does look a little bit nicer on the grays and darker colors, so I'll be sticking with this for now. I know a lot of other forums posters stated the v206 doesn't afford the graininess fix, I support that. Hopefully asus has a fix somewhere down the road for it. Also, for those of you looking for new x1700 drivers, just click here
and check these out. I have them installed and they seem stable. I also know the USA links have been down a lot lately, so that might help.

    Regards

Earlier there were some topics regarding the a8js/a8jp screens. The "graininess" is just part of the screen (rather than software), according to an Asus rep. A lot of notebook screens are like what you're seeing. I've seen it with high res screens on macbook pros, sonys, and dell latitudes. It's a drawback of added resolution from what I can gather.

I've come to not even notice it any more. I was just noticing the minimal graininess because I was looking for it. I used to have a Z96Js that I had to BIOS update.

    Hi,

I've just flashed my F3Jp with this version and the graininess is over! :D I'll spread the word so that you can have the lots of feedback! ;)

    Thank you GenTechPC! :D :D :D :D

PS: When do you think ASUS will release it officially? Are they thinking to fix the problem in other notebooks (like F3Ja, for instance)?

So the F3JP207.T00 fixed the graininess issue? that's great. I'll have them upload it, I think they will just use F3JP207.T00 as official BIOS, it's the same version as the official 207 but with graininess-free VGA BIOS.

    Thanks for the link!
I just got the F3JP and love it so far (except maybe battery life, we'll see). I even love the screen, but just for the heel of it, I updated the BIOS, and OMG! I didn't believe a beautiful screen could get any better, but it did! I never had grainyness looking straight at the screen, only on vertical angles, but it fixed that.
So heads up on anyone that thinks their screen is fine, it can probably get better (at least for some odd viewing angles)

I would also like to know this, seeing as how I am going to be buying an F3Jp soon. If it doesn't how else would I go about flashing to a newer BIOS?

Tootall88, Vista has a winflash (2.0.2 i think) built right in. Simply download the bios on page 9, and put it in, say "my documents", then search for and open Winflash, and open the bios, that's it.
That's what i did, worked like a charm.

What kind of performance boost does the Bios F3JP207.T00 give, beside only solving the grainess problem. I am still using bios 203 now.
