Well, technically... if the room temperature could be lowered (by using that fan pad for instance)... the fan on the system might turn on less...... but thats trivial I think.
Thanks,
Justin

I lost $500.00 when I returned by M5N to the reseller because it had been more than 15 days since I had purchased it. I bought it in December and took it out of the box in Jan.. I returned it last week after having sent it to ASUS where they replaced the fan, to no avail.
The noise was ridiculous. My wife asked me to take the computer out of the office because she could not work with the noise. It literally gave me a headache. The reseller kept grinding me down knowing that I could not use it. In good conscience, I could not sell it on Ebay. The whine was incredible.
Going to Apple where the processors run much cooler and nearly silently. It is worth the extra cost to convert. Neither the reseller, GearedtoPlay, nor ASUS did me any favors.

Please guys... no more fighting. This is supposed to be an informative forum... not one to flame others.
Despite all I've read here... I'm still quite interested in purchasing an M5Np. I dont' know why... but it is still very quite appealing to me.
Am I crazy?

Holy cow... 6 years ago? I'm talking about Kuwait and as of at least June of 03, I'm am 100% certain of my statement because I was approached at that point to import our new M3 centrino system. A year later, during this past June, Kuwait still didn't have centrino system for sale and and toshiba and sony were making their money on P4 and P4-mobile based systems. We sold many many systems that made their way over there for RESALE and when you factor in shipping and taxes it something doesn't add up. If they were available there they wouldn't be requesting them from the states. I can't see things changing in less than a year, but your 6 year comment is atleast not true of Kuwait, but certainly could be for UAE.
The only reason we don't have the W5 yet is because Taiwan want the US to have some cut-throat pricing on the unit and I'm sure wants the US office to adsorb the cost. So they were working that out. As far at the W3 goes, we would have had it by now if they weren't importing a model that is still in production... I take it you're getting the W3a or W3n? We'll get the W3v and as far as I know, they haven't left tiawan yet.
Just curious... How many Dirhams did your M5 cost you? Do you know how long the M5 has been available in UAE?
Finally, my comments about getting a make and model of this fan is important and don't make it seem like I'm trying to make him lose his warranty... that is just an excuse for not being able to provide us with facts. This problem a handful of you have is not something I've seen or heard about and neither has Rick from ISTNC (sorry for bringing you into this). Combined just the two of us have probably had more than 1,000 M5's go through our companies in the last 14 months and no one has complained of this. This isn't the word of some stupid american or some bs salesman reading off a white paper.. Throughout North America there have probably been 30-40,000 M5s sold through Asus' US office in the last year. This is not a problem they've come across either.
Thanks,
Justin

Well I hate to have to do this but I'm gonna have to pull the plug on this topic.
There are a number of reasons, first its getting so long that it is difficult for new readers, and even old ones to digest all of the information in here.
Also the last few pages have become more of a flame war rather than a support forum which is what this is supposed to be. Both sides of the argument are guilt of this, so I guess I will incure the wrath of all....but so be it.
Like AuroraS pleaded, we need to find a solution, not degenerate into Yankies are ...., or brits are so ...... etc etc.
In closing it I will start a new topic for solutions to the M5N fan problem. I am in agreeance with both sides, a I think that those experiancing the loud fan are just and correct in there observations (these are helpful by the way the more detailed and scientific the better), like wise Justin's experiance and knowledge suggest that this problem does not occur with 100% of M5N's. The fact that most problems seem to arrise from Europe leads to the obvious conclusion that a specific batch of M5N's maybe faulty in some way which is causing this fan issue. I hope that thru more constuctive disscussion in the new topic this issue can be worked out.
Thats all from me.
And thankyou to all for your posts!

Whats the latest news on the M5N fan, i heard they just released a revised version in North Americe. Do i need to replace both the fan and heatsink or just the fan since they have different product numbers when i called asus support.
If you have any news, please post it. I will solve a problem most M5N owners. -
Look I know that this Post is a bit late but I have a M5N notebook and yes I to was not happy with the level of fan noise.
However, after installing SpeedFan (v4.26 - see http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php) and tweaking with the settings, the M5N fan now is nice and quiet (normally running around 500rpm now) with little effect on the CPU core temperature when doing basic stuff like browsing the net, word processing etc (CPU temp as I type this post is sitting at 40degC). I've configured an upper temperature in speedfan where the fan speed is increased to a higher rates if the CPU temperature climbs. This kicks in if I start playing Quake or something.
If anyone is interested I have posted a pdf detailing the Speedfan settings required to make all of this work. :asus:Attached Files:

Asus z33 fans have been available for a while now. If you cant stand the m5n fan ask your dealer for a z33 fan they are like 10x better. We do have them so should your dealer

Solving M5N (M5000) fan noice.

Its been over a year since i got this laptop, and i'm still upset i got it. my m5n has overheated to 92C and the screen go black because the processor just can't take it, so i limited it to 600mhz (even then 70C) for a really long time until 11 months after i got it, before i finally decided i couldn't take it. I took it back to the distributor and they replaced the motherboard, cooling unit, cpu, but still the same problems. I think the fan is really annoying, but if i lower its speed, my computer is going to get fried, i think asus should just call back this poor excuse for a laptop, but thats not going to happen with their almost unethical practices continuing to push out these laptops with their known problems. I for one will never support Asus again.

Right. And you are blaming asus why? Did you ever think about blaming the people who couldnt fix your issue?

Incorrect again. The only inherent issue the m5n had was a nasty whiny fan which was addressed by dealers and asus itself. There was no heating problems with the m5n. You are indeed and isolated case. Blame your dealer not the designer. The design is still used to this day with the z33 series and might i ass its a very successfull one at that. Best 12 " for the money on the world in my oppinion.

Ditto that - the M5n was overcooled and to do that with such a small and thin fan required some serious blade angles and high rpms........ that creates more noise, but Asus has always been on the leading edge of cooling and every single one of their laptops designs start around the thermal envelope..... Today the fan is more limiting and I'm not sure if that's better or not but people who complained about got their way even though I think upper end cpus shouldn't be used in the newer models because the system will be hotter than the one it replaced due to this change in design.

Undervolt!
I have the Z70A which is identical to the M5n. My fans were loud and constantly on as well. However, I undervolted my CPU and now my Z70A is nearly silent. -
Anyway, yes, undervolting is usually a good thing to do with hot/small systems...
