Count me in for a W3N special order from Asus. I would first like to see actual photos though. I'm willing to pay the same price as a M6Ne with perhaps a $200 premium above the M6Ne asking price.
I like my M6NE but it's a little bigger than I'd like. A 14.1" screen is the ideal size for me. I'd also like better ergonomics on the front edge and palm rest. I find this to be very uncomfortable on the M6NE. I'd also like to see a notebook that doesn't have a parallel port. This is an unnecessary feature to me.
Oh, and most importantly, I want a notebook that is charcoal or black in color. I refuse to buy a silver notebook. I don't care what the specs are.

I doubt that I am no.1. I am from Germany and I have already placed my order here.
I was told that the first units should arrive this week. So I really hope that I get it end of this week.
Why I will get this one?
I am currently using a Toshiba 5200-801. A notebook with P4m 2Ghz processor, a Geforce 460go etc. It weights 3.6kg. I bought it exactly two years ago.
But now I am 'tired' of carrying such a heavy notebook around. In addition the design makes it hard to grab safely with one hand.
So I decided to get a new one which had to have the following specs:
Small, great display, great performance, Pentium M CPU...
First I had a look at the Sony VGN-S2XP. Great display, 1,8Ghz Pm CPU, ATI 9700 64MB GPU
But then I saw the Asus W3N. The fact that Asus now introduces the same kind of display technologies to this notebook as Sony uses made me swap. Especially since the version I will get offers a 2Ghz Pm CPU and a great double-layer burning DVD drive. And the best: it is even cheaper than the Sony...
Here in Germany I will have to pay 1950 for it (The Sony costs 2200.)
Regarding the games issue:
You will only be able to play games in a resolution of 1024*768 with some black borders. This will mean that you will have a screen of about 10"*7". Yep, that is small. But I think that this is not too much of a problem. Since you are the only one to look at the screen you can get quite close to it...And you will get used to it.
I like playing games and I am looking forward to play some of the games I was not able to due to the incompatibility of the Geforce460go (like SplinterCell: Pandora tomorrow).
The main reason for this notebook remains for me the small size packed with such power (2Ghz Pm cpu + ATI 9700mobility) offering a the "glare type" screen...
And looking at the additional pics on http://www.asuscom.de/products/notebook/w3series/w3000n/overview.htm (German sorry) tells me that I get quite a beauty, too...

Can somone please post the spec sheet provided by a overseas dealer? I know asus posts it as well but they are known for eraneous ads with beta products. Will this support the sonoma chipset in the future? i cant belive that usa is the last to receive all these products. Every single notebook they come out with makes it to the usa last. Doesnt make any sence. Jorlin sorry i was reffering to the poster above you mclassic. I ll post a reply to this thread on monday with the expected pricing if this will be available as a whitebook to the usa. It makes me mad how their best notebook w1n is an enseble notebook. You cant be a parts manufacturer and integrator at the same time. It just dont make any sence! Thats also why their sales of the w1n went to the poopshoot. Overpriced and not configurable,
-
Well, perhaps we'll know more around the time of the Intel event next week in San Francisco to announce their new Centrino platform. If the W3N isn't part of Asus' upcoming product announcement, maybe we'll have to lobby Asus USA and Asus Global to bring them here.
Even if they have no plans to bring it here, it would be nice if we could find it here as a rebranded model from another manufacturer. -
Wait so we can get this one earlier than the feb-march date?

Greets.
1799 is the MSRP. In streets maybe it will go for 1650euro.
In Portugal ASUS notebooks are generally overpriced.

I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for any notebook. So, if that's the expected price, then it's a dealbreaker for me.
-
i'd love for the w3n to be brought here, since its the closest thing to the benq joybook 7000 that i've been looking at for some time now, so here's to hoping geared2play will do it

I don't get it, when will this be available in the US?

When i was trying to figure out which notebook I wanted, i was stuck between the M3 and the M6. When it came down to it, I was hugely impressed by the longevity of the M3 (i get 5-7 hrs) and the beautiful, thin (and thus light) design. The M6 just looked very heavy to me and even though it sported an awesome Radeon 9700, my primary purpose for the notebook was for my education (comp-sci major at UBC) and lugging it around from class to class. Besides, I have a desktop that I could easily fit a much more powerful video card for much less than the $300 cost between the M3 and M6!
Now this W3 looks a lot like the M3, but with a widescreen and all the perks of the M6. So it seems to be the best of the M3 and M6. Only TWO things hold me back from upgrading to it. 1) the price! If this notebook was between the price of the m3 and m6, it would be worth it for me. Otherwise, if it's more expensive than the m6, it's way to much money for me to shell out, especially in light of 2) the battery life! I think the M3 will still have a large advantage... i would assume that the w3 would be simular to the m6 in battery longevity.
Of course, i've heard of m6 users overclocking their GPU, so what about underclocking? I'm sure a Radeon 9700 @ 50Mhz/50Mhz (memory) would have more than enough power for all the 2D stuff, and would have the battery life of an integrated solution like hte m3. And then the user could simply clock it back for games.
Has anyone tried this and figured out how much longer their m6 lasted? Can M6 users report on their average battery life? Thanks.

OK
Asus lead sales man says w3n should be out in about 1 month give or take (prbably give). It will infact be an ensemble notebook according to him and it will be somewhere around the 2000$ range or more. SOrry there is nothing i can do to import them sooner. Typical with ensemble notebooks. Whitebooks are easier to import but they still have to be on the market overseas for a little while so that us vendors can import them even if asus does not. Strange how they are whitebooks overseas but not here. I think its a marketing mistake on their part. -
Whitebook? ensemble? What do those terms mean? Sorry for the noob question.

Hehe...
I already got additional 512MB RAM so that I can directly upgrade the W3N to 1GB of RAM.
If I am lucky it will arrive on Thursday - Friday at the latest. [8D]
If not, I will have to wait until next week...

Please post a review when you get yours.
Im interested in the quality of the screen, that glare-type thingy.
Why didn't ASUS use their A.C.E. brand and use a plain glare-type? Maybe it is just a glare coating... Well.
Make us know when you get the laptop -
Here are a few more details regarding the W3N after speaking with a rep at PROPortable.
- Earliest availability is estimated at the beginning of February, perhaps end of January.
- They will be taking Pre-orders once they get details regarding final specs, color and pricing.
- There will be a complete configuration with a brushed aluminum chassis.
- There will also be a customized unit with a carbon fiber chassis, that should be cheaper than the complete unit and allows for user selected components.
The rep's analogy to describe the difference between the complete W3N unit and the customized W3N is the difference between Lexus and Toyota. Lexus obviously being the high-end model and Toyota being the mid-range.
So, it appears that there won't be severe sticker shock based on what we know about W3Ns sold in Europe.
Hope that helps. -
The W3N is delayed here in Germany... [
!]
It is unbelievable. This occures to me every time I want to get a new device that is about to released.
This time Ausu is supposed to have problems with the supply of BT-modules for the W3N.
I am sure the delay will be at least one week. ARRRRG! []

dont blame asus blame your supplier. Pre-orders are a tricky thing. Means you are ordering an item which is not in stock and not guranteed on time. Notice we do not have preorders for that same reason. People get frustrated when their stuff is not on time. -

The cpu plays a very minor role in fps. Most of the benchmark comes from the vga card directly. You should blame your supplier becuase as long as i have dealt with asus i ve never ever heard them say "delivery on a certain date". They always say on or around. Which means it can be a month early or late.
-
Asus has just replied to my question when the W3N will start shipping in Germany. They told me that it will arrive end of next week now...
So I hope this is going to be true and I will get it by the end of next week...

I just found out that the W3 will indeed be fitted with the 915 chipset and not the 855 as stated earlier. The W3 will be available as of Jan 24 in Asia.

Initial releases of the W3N, at least in the US, will feature the 855 Chipset. But, some time toward the middle of the year, perhaps sooner, it will be changed over to the 915 chipset.
I believe the '2005 Asus Notebooks' thread in this forum has a link to Asus' 915 models. Some of Asus' existing models will be updated with the new chipset. For example, The M6N will get the 915 chipset and be called M6A. So, a W3 with a 915 chipset isn't out of the question.
There will obviously be a premium on the new chipset models because of features like DDR2 memory, SATA hard drive, etc. The question is whether it's worth paying a premium for it.
-
@mclassic:
Your scenario is the more likely one...
Initial tests of the 915 chipset have shown that the performance gain is less than 10% compared to the 855 chipset. (It is supposed to become better with the availability of DDR2 RAM with a smaller latency.)
The main advantage might be a better graphic card (e.g. X700) but this will only affect games mainly.
In addition to that I have read somewhere that Intel is going to release the next step in mobile centrino technology next year already.
So actually the new chipset is not much of an advantage which is worth waiting for.
And... the W3N with the current configuration will be a great device anyway
Jorlin -
After seen the benchmarks of the new ASUS V6V, I would have to agree that right now a well spec'd i855 based notebook is gonna be just as good as a newer 915 based one. But I think there will be bigger advantages seen when using integrated graphics in the new chipset...just have to wait for some benchmarks on those. Also for gamers the future is pci-x and I doubt ATI/nvidia will produce an agp X800 etc for notebooks, they will want to push pci-x as much as possible. ASUS will have an X700 based notebook soon, and I hope a X800 will follow later in the year.
Also from my readings, the W3N will be upgraded to the W3A latter in the year...given that the N hasn't hit shops yet I'm guessing it will be the middle of the year for that upgrade, my guess is it will have a X600, maybe a X700 at best.

Well, this appears to be odd...
What might be the truth is:
Asus announced a 915-W3 unofficially. cnet accidentally mixed that with the announcement of the upcoming W3N...

Maybe Asus is going to announce this new version of the W3 series on Monday...
Hmmm... should I wait then? It will certainly cost more than the W3N(2Ghz).
And I do not want to wait much longer for my notebook replacement.
Let's see what monday brings.

If it's gonna use a X600 (like it seems), I surelly will buy a W3N based on the old centrino platform.
A SONOMA laptop with a X600, with no azalia (like the W3N is suposed to be), no sata, would offer no more then a good'old centrino. No performance that deserve the wait, not to mention the smaller battery life. -
I have done a bit of research especially regarding the X600 graphic card.
There are only a few reviews of notebooks with the X600.
It seems that there is not much of a difference between the performance of a 9700m and an X600. Actually some of the test state that the 9700m might be better.
Keeping in mind that the 915-chipset does not add more performance at the moment especially because the DDR2-RAM which is available is too slow, there will not be a noticeable difference between the 855- and the 915 configuration (2Ghz cpu each).
So SATA and azalia might be the only benefit in the end. Expecting that this 'superior' configuration will cost more, this leads me to the conclusion that you - at least I will - should stick with the 855-chipset configuration...
(Especially if I had to wait much longer for it...)

ASUS will use a cheap AC97 codec and PATA on the V6V, so, my bet will be no azalia nor sata on the W3A.
Not to mention that it will be probably more expensive, even if intel sell the parts at the same price as the older ones.
And yeah, it seems that 9700m is better than X600 by a small margin, and if we account the longer battery life...
X700 is a different story. If W3N SONOMA would came with one of those, I would wait and the wait would be well payd. But a X600... well. Can't wait to my old-centrino-W3N to come to store -
Hi,
just want to say how much all the advice on these forums helps. It's kind of doing my head in trying to find my perfect laptop, though i think now i've found it. The ASUS w3n. And it's been released today in Asia?!
Does anyone know where I can order one of these that can be shipped to Japan?
It's next to impossible to find retailers in japan who stock laptops with english only keyboards, international warranties...and the few retailers who do stock systems in English I have found are insanely overpriced.
Also if it's a whitebook can I get it without winXP? Rather not have to pay that tax when I'm not going to use it. -
I just received an update from [email protected]. He informed me that the W3N with the aluminum chassis (Lexus model) will be released in the US market at the end of February. Pricing has not been set yet, because Asus is still evaluating which models will be most popular in the US.
The Asus W3N barebones/whitebox (Toyota) model with carbon fiber chassis will be released to US market some time in March.
The W3N model designated for sale in the US will feature the Intel 915 chipset. Asus presently has the W3N with the Intel 855 Chipset in the Asian market. So, that why we have heard very little about the W3N in the US.
It sounds like a pretty logical move to me considering that it will be a newly introduced notebook to the North American market and Intel has already announced its 915 chipset with a few manufacturers already having 915 equipped notebooks on the market.
If you guys have any questions, feel free to contact [email protected]. -

Greetings All,
I'm here if anyone needs information on current or upcoming Asus or our Built on Asus notebooks.
A lot of you are getting the wrong information from International sites. None of the specs and pricing for the new notebooks (W5/W3/W2/W1 update/V6) are final yet... atleast as far as the US spec is concerned. As for the W3, we're not going to be importing this 855 model, so right off the bat, all specs and pricing and eta's can be thrown out the window.
I don't want to be looked at as though I'm pushing our stuff, but I do find it funny how some people who are selling asus notebooks are in here and give incorrect information. We've been importing and selling asus or asus based notebooks for four years now and we're at the top of the food chain as far as new information goes. I'm not going to jam anything down anyones throats, but I am here to supply information and answer questions. If any of you would like to get some background information about us, take a look at the two links below. Feel free to email or im me anytime.

There is a reason why we are both here with user names that link directly to our site. Neither one of us would be here if exposure was not the name of the game. Fact is this site provides refferals to anyone who offers honest advise even if they are a reseller. As for being on top of the food chain. Correct some of the errors in your z80k listing then you will truly be on top. I must admit your rr feedback is astonishing. Its noce to see a good honest company give a good name to my favorite brand. The correction in your listing on your site needs to reflect the current availability of the z81k and also the wifi card in it is integrated. it is not an option in either the z80k or the z81k. Hello, no actually... you must have a guilty conscience or something [
]
I was referring to two instances actually... one, someone said the "black or customizable" S5n is the M5n... That was supposed to be someone who sold them. Now, this is untrue. They are similiar, but not the same, and since we have custom black S5's for almost 9 months, it's ashame that someone was pushed in another direction when they were looking for something specific.
The other instance was a guy by the same of "Rock Dude" who pushed StarTech like they were the best thing since sliced bread... but following a simple search of his website and checking our StarTech's... he was one of their salesman. That was just wrong.
Anyway, in respect to your comment about the z80k and z81k.. let me give you some details....
First... we don't want to sell the z81k for two reasons... The z81k comes with an Asus 120b wifi card and has a 64mb ati 9700... The z80k comes with an Asus 120g wifi card and 128mb ati 9700... Both of the cards in the Z8 series are minipci cards and not inegrated into the motherboard. For the same price, 90% of customers when given the option of a regular ratio and wide screen of the same res, would pick the regular ratio when the graphics on the widescreen are seriously stunted. If we're only going to offer one model, it is certainly going to be called the z8k. We we end up offering both, then we would certainly need the differentiation.
Now, the wifi is not integrated. It is standard, but we certainly can offer to remove the card if the customer so desires not to have wifi (I admit, everyone does, but it's an option and we certainly can use that wifi card somewhere else.. It's not like we have the option to add it for $35).
Anyway, have a good evening and don't think everyone is talking about you. Keep up the good work yourself.
Thanks,
Justin
