Aah well i guess i am not the only sales rep here. Rockdude its not godly to be a poser and push your own product pretending to be someone else if that was what you are doing. Dont know why you just dont use the handle "startech". As for the z81k. You are right and wrong. I am surprised you actually know about the video card as it seems no other reseller does or just dont care much to write a proper decription. The z80k has a modular card which can be removed. The z81k does not and it cannot be taken out that easily. It has a proprietory card that does not fit into other laptops (as far as i can see). 64mb vs 128mb makes little difference. I am sure you benched both versions 128 and 64 and you should have found it makes no difference for the benchmark. LAstly people do pick the wsxga screen over the sxga screen. SOme when faced with the fact that its only 802.11B and it has 64mb take the z80k. Also keep in mind z81k has a dvd+-rw. I think the z81k is highly underpriced but rightfully so becuase of the obvious. Justin its nice to meet other players in the game for the money and the fame most are here just for the money. Anyone looking for a notebook feel free to contact either one of us you will not be dissapointed.

By the way we are 2 different companies who are direct competitors in case people start thinking we are "related".

Well, in that case.... it's a minipci card and it's placed right under the keyboard.. just as difficult as a minipci on an M6... certainly not as difficult as the minipci on the M5.

If you're getting a calling for gamers who are the ones interested most in the high res widescreens.... that are willing to downgrade graphics, then you certainly have a niche. Our demo z81k from September had the same spec as the z80k, but then again, at the time, both came with the dvd-rw and now the z80k is standard with a combo drive. Everything was obviously done to make both systems virtually identical price wise... but it does leave a lot to be desired when you have to pick one or the other and neither are exactly what you want.

Z81K does not actually have a modular keyboard like the m6n. It doesnt come of that easy. You have to disasemble the whole shell to get under the keyboard here

If we all waited around for gt4, we'd all be too old to play it... gt4 was supposed to be released almost every month now for the past 2 years.

No, it's only coming out for ps2, but it technically is the same time frame.

I think some people are on a different calendar, before GTA and once it comes out, after GTA .... I don't know.

Those pics might be nice to see. You see I did not make them by myself. The source can be seen on the pics. I was looking through the whole site for W3N pics. The quality is not the best: JPG-compression on one side and bad conditions to take photos on the other...
Enjoy, anyway... :D

Hi Justin...

I am from Germany. Asus is selling "fixed" units here. There will be two versions available - 1,7Ghz and 2Ghz. I will get a 2Ghz version.
Originaly they were supposed to be available at the end of january. But Asus delayed the release (don't ask me why... GRrrr...[ :(!]).

But my distributor is expecting the first units within the next two weeks... (Hope he is right.)

Off Topic: When will the Holiday Giveaway Contest be over / when will the winners be announced?

Are you in the US? Because we're looking at atleast the first week of March before they get to us... Asus' US office, as of 7pm EST tonight... they still haven't ordered them... so the spec and price are still up in the air.. and ETA is going to be changing if they don't get them ordered soon.

It will probably take a week or two to produce the units for the states once they get their order in, and then another two weeks to hit california...

Oh right... so if you get the 855 model then I take it?

The contest is over... we did extend it from new years till the end of january though... we're still going through all of the entries.... we should have things sorted out in a week or so.

I'm going to hold out for as long as I can for the W3, because I'm curious to see pricing. But, I also have my eye on the new HP 6230 and 8200 notebooks.

Well, again... I don't know if you're in the US or not.... but not distributor in the states is going to get a W3 till atleast mid march.... Since Asus hasn't ordered it yet it certainly can't magically appear.. but I don't know where you are so I don't know whats going on.

ASUS is screwing us up by making us wait forever...
I will wait till the end of February, then, they can kiss my money bye bye.
Waiting is a pain! Perfect notebook, delayed forever...

BTW, my distributor was also expecting the w3n for the next week, but now he dont even got one aproximated ETA. By the time W3N arrives, there will be one SONOMA version in the price list, so they can make us all feel dumb by buying some old-tech. At least, we know that it will take forever for a model that appears in the pricelist to be on the streets.

I've been looking at just about every 15 inch or smaller notebook to replace my Inspiron 9200, and the W3N or W3V is by far and away the best option I've seen for what I'm looking for. I love the i9200, but unfortunately it's just a bit too big for me to lug around campus.

So just to recap on it's current status, the W3N (which I would personally prefer at this point) is definitely NOT going to be showing up in North America, and instead the W3V based on the Sonoma chipset will be sold. Given the premium that seems to be attached to this new chipset (higher cost DDR2 and PCI-X video), we're probably going to be looking at Acer 8100 series range prices for half the video processing power, smaller screen, and less ports.[ :(]

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Right... even if Asus sets the specs (cpu, hdd, ram, optical, graphics) on the lower side, we're still looking at a machine over 2 grand. If those numbers were maxed out, which they wouldn't be.. this could easily be over 3 grand..

What we can assume:

- the sonoma platform is most expensive because it's a year newer.....

- the 14" widescreen ace view is about the same price as the W1's 15.4" tft display...

- the new ram and cpu will have a premium on them.

- the x600 graphics card will certainly have some sort of premium over the ati 9600/9700.........

- 8x dvd dual layer burners look like they are the new combo drives.... it's going to be a standard on atleast asus' systems. So, I figure if Asus makes the W3V in a similiar way they configured the W1... The W3 will be atleast the cost of the W1... So $2500 or higher. My concern is that Asus wants to try to hit a specific price point with this machine and lowers the cpu, hard drive and ram to try to get to that point. They've never done that in the past, but they always build performance machines with exchangable parts that are "the best value for your dollar at the time"......

The other aspect we have to look at is the barebone market... The W3 will come out down the road as a lower end barebone machine..... This probably means that the W3V will be marketed to just the highend market and thus we'd have a really decent spec...... The only problem there is some of you who are looking for this machine at like $1,500 or so... you're going to have to get the barebone and order a lower configuration... Depending on how the barebone is made up, yes you won't get all the thrills... but the big problem would be you're going to be waiting atleast another month.

In the event that this is indeed the case, it looks like I'm going to have to keep looking then.[ :(] Way too expensive for what you actually get... if it was an X700 in there, I could see where the cost would be justified. Considering that the Acer 8100 even at it's highest config can be had for under 2,300 bucks, I just don't see why Asus would be pushing a machine with yesteryears graphics at a "high end" price.

Yeah, thats making a lot sense.... but it looks like you already own a dell and probably justified that too. Asus' machines are always "worth it" so why don't you all just wait til the final specs and price are ready?

The W1 right now is $2,400..... it's worth every penny..... Some people can appreciate good quality blended with performance and will pay for it. At the end of the day a subaru wrx is just as fast a bmw m3. Does that mean the m3 isn't worth it? You might not be able to afford it, but the argument certainly doesn't stop at price.

And again.... numbers I'm throwing out there are purely speculative. As far as an x600 vs x700... I don't know if they can fit an x700 in the small frame of the W3 and even if they could, battery life would be a huge issue. The W3 is a light and thin 14" widescreen with power..... I don't know where PCI express is going to bring us down the road, but right now we don't have fuel cells, so there is going to have to be a compromise some where.

There has been a very nice article about Sonoma (tested with an Asus V6) on Tom's Hardware Guide:
http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20050119/index.html

The unexpected conclusion is that Sonoma consumes more power and is only on par regarding performance with the old 855-chipset. The X600 PCIe card does only perform as well as the 9700m GPU.
So actually Sonoma is only a step forward with porting desktop technology to mobile computers. Unfortunately it is more a step in place (or - if you are very critical - even a step backward) regarding mobility...

With the new graphic cards (like the X700) the power consumption is twice as high as previous mobile GPUs.

In addition with the higher price you will have to pay for Sonoma (even if Intel sells it for almost the same as the old 855 chipset) there cannot be a recommendation for Sonoma right now...
And Intel will make another revision of its mobile technology in spring 2006 already.

So I am very glad getting a W3N with the 'old' 855-chipset, a 2Ghz Pm, an 80Gb HD, an ATI 9700m GPU, and a Dual-Layer-DVD-writer for less than 2000€ (here in Germany). :D

The Acer TravelMate 8100 is indeed a very nice Sonoma notebook. But having a look at that the test on www.hothardware.com, you know that it is more a desktop replacement than a mobile device:
http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.cfm?articleid=637&cid=10

The battery life is poor with this workhorse of a GPU inside. Certainly the performance is impressive.
But honestly, I prefer to stick with a real mobile computer like the W3N that still allows me to play current games with mid-quality than having a 'king-sized' notebook that has such a poor battery life.

When you put shiny rims and import racing stickers on a stock Honda, it doesn't decrease the cars quality, but it sure as hell doesn't make it a racer either.

I'm sure the W1 is a fine machine, but with it's specs, the M6 series is in my opinion far superior. Great asthetics (far nicer looking than the W1, again, in my opinion), same Asus build quality, and you can nearly max out the system spec wise and still be saving 400+ dollars.

I'd probably be willing to pay an extra c-note or 2 for the W3V over an M6 machine, but that's about it.

Jorlin,

Were you able to configure your own W3N, or did you buy a pre-configured model?

I haven't been able to find them on any asian sites yet, and was only able to find some preconfigs on the German online outlets.

Right, but you have greater bandwidth throughout the system..... No doubt it's going to consume more power and right now it looks like the batteries are just about as good as they are going to get without some breakthrough technology. Personally, I would have rathered if Intel invested their money into a battery company and have them come up with a better energy source.

You're not going to get my car analogy, and its why you think an M6 is a far superior machine. The bottom line is, there isn't a notebook on the face of the earth that has a better mix of truly elegant design and superior build quality. Yes, you can take an M6 and configure it however you want... great... no kidding, my W1 is maxed out and is also running it's ati 9600 with better 3d mark scores than my stock L5 w/ 128mb 9700... it's all in the settings.. But then again, our company builds these machines.

As far as aesthetics go, it's somewhat a matter of opinion, but as anyone with a degree in architecture or design or art will tell you, it's the finest implementation of minimalism in a notebook computer. I would take all of Asus' designs and put them up against any other company....... but as far as their own line goes, I know I've spent more time with all of the systems over a very long period... you can understand a lot about the W1, just knowing that it's palmrest is made of 1/8" pure brushed aluminum.

The bottom line is... the W3 will be the best best OVERALL... 14" notebook (design, spec, price, weight, features, battery life).... in about a month, we can put them all up against each other and see which one wins...

Hmm, the new ASUS V6V offers a ZERO DEAD PIXEL policy from ASUS! I wonder if the W3N or W3A offer the same...

I get your analogy just fine, and I think the the M6 is a better looking machine because I believe it doesn't cross the line between "stylish" and "boring".

This interests me. Please post the full specs of those 2 machines you compared, as well as the GPU's core/mem clocks and version of 3DMark used. I'd be very interested in knowing if an anomoly such as that has ever been recorded before.

quote:
As far as aesthetics go, it's somewhat a matter of opinion, but as anyone with a degree in architecture or design or art will tell you, it's the finest implementation of minimalism in a notebook computer.

If it's catering to that crowd, then it's clearly a niche market book. If they want to spread the extra cash around to have an underpowered computer cradled inside a minimalistically artistic looking piece of aluminum siding, they're more than welcome. I'm just an average guy who if given the choice between a Manga and a coffee table art book I would pick the Manga any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

First of all, I'm only using stock settings to overclock the 9600 using the omega drivers..... anyone can do it and come up with the same results.. and still get good battery life and not much more heat output...... so this isn't anything earth shattering.

You didn't indicate that you were overclocking the GPU, so I'm sure you can imagine why it peaked my curiosity. I'm not much of an overclocker myself...

Oh.. no ... I thought what came out was that the L5 with 128mb ati 9700 stock...but if you play with the settings of the ati 9600, you can get better performance. What most people are looking for, but with a few tweaks a 64mb 9600 can give it a run for it's money. Most people don't screw with the settings, thats true.

But everyone has always said that the W1 is more more than the M6 if you configure them the same way.... the only problem? Well, the W1 has a screen you can't get on the M6 which is about $150 more to replace, so I'm going to put that value on it. The W1 also has an 8x dual layer dvd burner....... From what Asus specifically makes for the M6.... aside from the 4x burners we had offered..... 95% of what you'll see offered is a 2x dvd-rw....... about a $150 cost difference......

Anyone who's tried to spec an M6 out to that of a W1 will come up with about a $300 difference...... and that difference as stated above is one that most people overlook.

Wow, that is disappointing that the W3A is going to be around $2300 at its base point (of course speculative) I was think it would be around $1500 base and then work up from there. Personally, I don't play PC games at all and wish I didn't have to pay for a dedicated video card. Justin, do you think that will be an option when it comes out?

I may have to go with the Fujitsu 7011 (or older 7010) as I can get one configured to my liking for $1900.

I guess I'll play the waiting game until the price is announced. I would rather have the Asus but if the Fujitsu is going to be at least $500 cheaper, then I guess I won't be getting an Asus. [V]

Here's to hoping the W3A is price competitive..

This is cruel really...

W2? Well, a reseller here in Germany was already talking about that one. But he said as much as you did... [ :(!]

Can I buy the W3N now with the confidence not to be very sorry about that decision when I see the W2?

Well, I will get the W3N anyway. It is always the same with the computer merket: You get a device - no matter how advanced it is. There is always the near future that comes up with even better stuff. If you try to wait for the best... you will wait forever. [xx(]

I'm through with this till I have final specs, price and a better eta. This unit is going to be what finally puts Asus on the map in the notebook world with those who don't know jack about Asus..... I really think that. I'm not going to say another word about the W3 till that point.

It will be competive, but I think the barebone model, which is will a little lower grade material will be more "competitive" considering you have to pay for the higher quality that Asus puts into these systems. True, most people don't understand, don't care, or just can't afford it...

It's ashame really.... none of you guys even know about the W2 yet.... man, I'm going to have fun going back and forth about that one... we'll see who is crying uncle when their wallet isn't big enough. Then we'll be talking about competition again, but I don't think they'll be any.....

Then why aren't you looking at say a 12" then? I know exactly what you mean and I have my uses for all the different notebooks... I even know a pretty famous guy on tv who found a good use for a tablet pc.... lets just say he doesn't take the news paper with him like normal folks.

Anyway..... The W2 isn't anything to be concerned about yet.... It's something that is going to come out in May/June and just about take care of all of those people saying Asus just builds professional machines.. It's not a replacement to the W1 or to the W3... I know the numbers seem all screwed up, but the W2 helps complete the W series.... Anyone interested in the W3, certainly aren't going to be looking towards a W2, but like I said.. you guys can sit on that for the night and try to come up with some good guesses as far as what it is.

NOOOOOOOOOO! Say it ain't so!!!!!!!!! [;)]

W2, huh. Ehhh, gimmie a decent price point on W3A.

Personally, for me at least, it isn't hat I can't afford it. I can. But this is just a toy for me. Basically so I can surf the internet while in bed at night, instead of having to be in another part of the house. It definately isn't a necessity and at some point I have to say enough is enough. But we'll see hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'll take a guess on the W2... the case is molded out of the same space titanium the original Mecha-Godzilla was made of, is painted by the ghost of John Lennon, and it'll cost you a kidney and 75 % of your liver.

Under the hood, a Pentium MMX-266 + Voodoo 2 Mobility Chipset.

Well, ergonomics and design are subjective. I did find the design attractive. But, my biggest issue was quality. And, although I agree with you on the the subject of the dead pixel, both manufacturers and sellers need to be mindful of the investment the buyer makes in a notebook.

My M6Ne cost me almost $1900. I don't care what the policy is, a dead pixel is a BIG issue. If it wasn't an issue, you wouldn't have every notebook owner and prospective buyer living in fear and/or anger over the infamous dead pixel.

Add the build quality issues and what is the buyer (investor) left with? A reasonable amount of dissatisfaction. Should a car buyer be happy taking a car away with a ding in the door or a crack in the windshield? Should a big screen/flat screen TV buyer be happy with a dead pixel or other flaw in the screen?

Sorry to get off topic, but I think manufacturers need to be mindful of this. Of course, some of us learn to live with a dead pixel. But, does that buyer go with the same manufacturer the next time he purchases a system? That's something to consider.

All laptops are predisposed to dead pixels dont matter the brand. As for ergonomics i found they made a superb design. As someone said before its classy, pretty, carbon fiber, light for its class, super expandeable, great battery life, superb support and the best turn around time from asus rma. Hp is great. Be sure to order the upgrade support option from hp othewise you may as well buy from dell. HP, dell, amd all the big bous have one thing in common. The support overseas never dealt witht he product they are supporting. Never owned a dell or hp in my life and never will but i did want to try fujitsu now that everything i have is decked out in asus stickers.

I understand what you mean. If one manufacturer starts to be midn full of dead pixels the rest will follow but that will never happen. Dead pixels are commonly accepted in this industry. 99% of people wont notice and wont be bothered by them especially on a hi res lcd where they are extra small. Your analogy of a dead pixel to a broken window is not correct. Everyone who buys a new car and notices a crack will have to complain and get it repaired. 99% of people who get a dead pixel will live with it like it was never there though there are some cases of bad pixels that are truly annoying (cluster in the center or yellow subpixels in various spots). Dead pixel policies which cost money are put in place for people to pay for them. If you dont buy this policy you should always expect the worst this way when it arives flawless ( they usually do) you ll be even happier. You have to understand that asus, compal, quanta, uniwill and all the other odms do not manufacture their screens. They go to other odms for that. What makes you think that if you switch manufacturers you will have better luck? A bad pixel does not reflect quality. Now when bad pixels are a norm for a manufacturer they will surely go out of business or loose their hi end customers. Bad quality involves bigger things like lack of support and long rma times as well as all the other things you can expect when you buy a 699$ notebook.

As G2P said... it'll never happen.

Just so you know, Samsung, probably one of the best lcd panel makers out there has a 15% DOA policy... That is about even with the rest of the industry. 15%! That means they think you only need 85% of your screen to be productive and happy with your purchase.

Any company who has any sort of pixel policy less than that........ which would be just about everyone... eats this... period. They get bent over and feed this line of crap that this is technology and blah blah..... It's actually one reason Asus and Fujitsu teamed up and developed the glare-type lcd panels... They saw the weakest link of the systems they made come down to the lcd panels and went out and did something about it.

BS isn't it?

Pro.
15% was a correct estimate years ago. In the past few years this percent has been decreased which is the reason the cost of plasmas and lcd's came down alot but it is still hi enough to make these things expensive. One may think that lcd's are more expensive then crt's becuase they are more expensive to make and they are new technology. NO. They are not more expensive to make then CRT's considering the raw materials that go into it. If they are more expensive its only by a couple dollars. Reason they are more expensive is becuase of the rma rate as pro said is HIGH. As for dead pixels. We are all normal people here. I do a bit of graphics work and watch movies when biz is dead on my 17" sony digital lcd. I have a couple sub pixels and a few dead ones. WHen people start complaining about one dead pixel i just dont understand what the fuss is about. The bad pixels bothered me for about 10 minutes when i realized they are there. I am typing on this white screen and i see this one bad pixel right in the middle. I really have to try hard to find it. I just dont understand why people start crying about it. I think its all in your mind. If you learn to deal with it and stop looking for it its just not a bother. Then again i totally undersdant not everyone is the same. Buy a dead pixel policy or a dead pixel scan if its such a bother. Yes it costs money but if you are one of those people that cannot have a dead pixel its well worht it. We offer it for 75$ which guarantees the laptop free of dead pixels for 48 hours. Sure its expensive but like i said before we dont promote this option infact we only offer it in our warranty page.

Ok, first of all, as of today... Samsung's warranty to the OEM (Asus) is still 15%. Asus' warranty to dealers and end users is certainly different.

As far as $75 for 48 hours of no dead pixels... do many people pick that option? I'd make an option of $150 for a week of no dead pixels..... What kind of option would you give them for a year? I mean, sure some people will pay it, but what are their limits? I've seen some places that offer a years worth of no dead pixels for the cost of a lcd panel.....

If you look at the ASUS Global site, you'll see that they offer a NO DEAD PIXEL policy for their V6V notebook.
That's great news.[ :D]

pixel policy should be this way:
if you have 0 dead pixel, you pay your notebook.
If one dead pixel, you pay only 90%, 2 deadpixel 80%... and so on.
Why would you pay the same for a notebook with one less pixel then all the others?! If the yield is not good, they MUST do diferentiated prices!!!!!
