Well, I just had no idea what 8lbs weighed - I couldn't really wrap my head around it. And I don't own a scale or anything so I couldn't really get an idea of what all of the models I was looking at weighed. So I read on some site about the gallon of water weighing 8lbs, so I used that as a gauge. By pouring various amounts off I could get a better idea of what the systems I was looking at weighed and it became very clear to me that anything over 5.5lbs would be too heavy, especially with all the other crap I'd end up carrying around.

I know it sounds like a crazy way to do things, but it was interesting. Those of us with really high IQs have to find things to keep our brains busy you know. [ ;)]

    Just kidding of course...

I really wish ASUS had a 13" model. I think that would be totally ideal. Not to promote other brands or anything, but have you looked at Fujitsu?

    Cyber6,

Yeah, IBMs truly are the ugliest notebooks on the planet and are grossly overpriced, but some people love them so to each his own.
    <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>

You know... I have a theory on that.. IBM's are not overpriced.. they are "under spec'd" [:D]
Meaning they built a Pentium M-750 .. they will charge as a Pentium M-750.. but they will sell it as a Pentium M-740. Get it??? You run benchmark tests on this baby.. and compare it with other 740's... and of course the IBM's will outperform the rest. Then it would seem very justifiable to charge more for a machine that performs better than the others in its class... But, the joke is on you.. cause all along you paid for a 750.

Well that is my theory.. and it will remain a theory until someone’s proves it right or wrong. [;)]

Yes.. I have.. they do have nice laptops... But I really like the Asus make. The closest thing is the V6.. With that I am only losing 64Mb of vram. (I want at least 128Mb).. my other option is to forget about the 2 yeart global warranty.. and go and configure myself a Z71V (512M DDR2 533Mhz Dual Channel, 60G SATA Hard Drive
DVD & CDRW Combo Drive and 128M nVidia 6600 PCI Express Video.. for less than $1800 Canadian)

My opposition to IBM is totally irrational and I'll be the first to admit that, so definitely don't take anything I say about them too seriously. [ :)]

I know a LOT of very happy IBM owners and about two not-so-happy IBM owners. When I first started looking at laptops last fall, I got a lot of friends telling me to go with IBM. I tried really hard to make myself like them enough to buy one, but I just couldn't do it. They might be great computers, but i'm a chick so naturally looks matter to me. I'm not a snob, but I do believe that a computer can be really high quality and look really good at the same time (ASUS, Apple) and I don't understand why the hardcore IBM people seem to think the two things are mutually exclusive. Sleek and sophisticated notebooks can still be business-appropriate. Why something has to be spartan and black and horribly ugly and dated in order to be taken seriously as a business notebook I'll never understand.

I DID look at IBM. I really need the reliability. And putting looks aside (Hey, I am a chick too.. and looks are only important in the guy you are using as a boy toy..[:p]).. I configure what I wanted.. it came out to around $6500 Cnd !!!!

I also looked at Dell, Toshiba's Sony's.. but I am allergic to plastic [:D].. anyway.. Asus was recommended to me by a Web guru/system builder/laptop reseller friend of mine, and the rest is history.

Oh yeah, duh, you already mentioned the V6 earlier. Sorry, I'm a bit slow...

Oh totally go for the Z71v if you think it would work for you! I know that global warranty is appealing being stuck up here in the great white north and the resellers here are not exactly going to make you jump out of your seat to get their warranty instead. It's a really hard decision.

Justin (or anybody else) - any additional info that hasn't been posted yet on the new models (prices, pics, etc)? Z70A released?[?]

I am especially curious about the Z70A and Z63A.

Yeah, I'm also curious about the Z63.

Justin, do you think there'd be any difference in the weight of the Z63 and W3V, since one is all CF? BTW, what is the total weight of the W3V with the battery and DVD writer drive. I know you told me before, but I can't seem to find that post...

First... no info on the Z70's because Asus hasn't focused on them.... now that the W3's are out and have all shipped... now the next focus is sort of on the Z70a.... in a way.... that'll be the next thing released.... but nothing yet.

The Z63a will probably weigh the same as the W3.... the only part of the W3 that isn't carbon fiber is the lid and thats not going to change the weight much as all.

I'd say with the optical drive in and the extended battery... we're looking at about 4.7 pounds... 4.5 with the travelers drawer in...

I just saw the Z70, a Z705C to be precise, centrino based, this model has a pentium m 715, 512mb, 40gig hd, ati 9700, wxga screen, 8x double layer dvd burner, XP Home, 2 year pick up and return warranty.

(the 9600 mentioned on the store is a typo)

Interesting...however, it is not a US model, not Sonoma, and doesn't seem to be a barebones. If only we could be so lucky to have the info on the Z70A or V models right now![:0]

Will any of the new Asus models feature a nvidia gpu? The z71v ALMOST hits it right on the head, but its a tad bit big for me. If a 14 inch widescreen laptop with nvidia graphics is available, I'd much rather jump for that. The w3v is perfect, except for the x600[xx(].

You're not going to see a bigger graphics card in something like a W3.... but if you give it time I think Asus is trying to bring back nvidia into at least some of what they are building.

For now, the nvidia cards are basically focused on the AMD notebooks and you'll see more of that with the Turion models in the next couple months...... but right now, I don't see much else making use of nvidia.

Once Asus started making desktop card with ATI chipsets a little over a year and a half ago.... It seems like their focus totally shifted from Nvidia to ATI...... the Z71v is the first Nvidia based system I've seen since..... man.... I think the L5gm used an nvidia card... back in December of 03.. I can't think of another system (if someone can remember any others between than and now, chime in)..

So, I don't know what's planned, but we'll see more.

so the W1V isnt getting a 128mb gfx card? if so that really sucks, the W1N is one of my favorite Asus notebooks but i refuse to buy it because of the 9600 64mb card...

Well I doubt it.....There isn't much room in that system when you take into account the subwoofer and the two minipci slots.... as long as they are sticking with the x600 in the W1, I can't see it with more than 64mb of RAM. They are using the 128mb x700 on the W2...

Any news yet? ISTNC has the specs for the Z61A and Z70A listed on their site (no pics or prices, though). I don't know if they are correct or not (it might just be a page setup), but it seems like they are at least gearing up for release.

So, if anybody has new on pricing (even approximate), it would be greatly appreciated.

Justin - will you be offering the Z70A and Z63A when they are released?

The Z70a isn't going to be out for another couple weeks.

What I have confirmed is that it's basically going to use the exact same shell as the M6bne, except it will have the aluminum left and right click buttons like the m5/w3/v6..... this will have the same color chassis as the M6 did.....

Also, it's going to use the same WXGA widescreen that the M6bne used... this is going to be a great low end system.

Now, the Z70v is still set for July....... and that is going to come in most likely a silver.......

    Still nothing on the Z63a.

Thanks for the info, as always!

Ooooh, the fact that the Z70A will be a widescreen just put it back in the running to become my next notebook! The only negative (in my mind, it might become a plus) for the Z63A is that it will be white.

Justin, in your opinion, which (Z70A vs Z63A) will be a physically more solid system? They are both carbon fiber, right?

All (I might be the only one that cares...) -

It looks like ISTNC has the Z70A available (maybe?), or at least it is posted prematurely WITH a price! $568 w/o anything. Built up nicely in the high $1300's (1.73, 1 gig ram, 60/7200, DVD/CDRW, A/B, no software, etc). I hope that's the real price - that would be nice!

Anyway, at least we're getting closer...

Now I just need complete info on the Z63A...

The Z70a's have come to port, as expected. But it's not being released yet because the optical drives didn't come in.. so expected date was some time by early next week I assume..... but that's the deal.... and it's going to be CHEAP...... something a lot of people who don't need dedicated graphics will like.

of course it is... once you release the force, the "waterdrop" is gone. And you have to press quite hard to achieve that effect in the first place...

From what I understand, the M6 chassis was a favorite, so to have an integrated graphics version for so cheap, I feel like I'm missing something here.

Why would it be cheaper than the Z71A? The 71 is plastic, the 70 is carbon fiber. Both are Sonoma, the 71 is DDR1, the 70 is DDR2. What gives?

Have there been any problems with the M6 chassis?

The only "flaw" I've seen in the M6 chassis is probably minor flex in the back of the LCD panel; if you press with enough force, you will see distortions in the LCD (waterdrop effect). Other than that, I don't see anything else wrong with the M6 chassis...

Its cheap price probably has something to do with the lack of ALS that the Z71A has... of course, there are other things to consider as well.
    Maybe Justin can answer this?

Is the "waterdrop effect" only temporary?

Yes, it helps. I just can't find a negative for the Z70A (for me).

I need to make up my mind between the Z70A and Z63A... The white just might knock the 63 out of the picture, but I have to confirm the color first.

Well, I doubt ALS is a huge part of the price, but honestly the price should be pretty similar.

Technically yes, the current drives (which we have a ton of), would work........ I'm not sure if the Z70a is actually a different color.... but Asus said the color isn't exactly the same...... Where as the Z70v is supposed to be silver and completely different color wise.

I gave a couple people who love the charcoal the option of reverting back to that chassis, since it'll work. We'll do that un a case by case basis at an extra charge of that chassis.... Some people told me flat out, if the Z70v is silver, they don't want it (don't want to stand out) and would rather get an M6ne now...... so, I think for the cost of the older color chassis, getting the new notebook is pretty spiffy.

    Thanks,
    Justin

LOL... I think the dark/black colour is MUCH more professional looking.
And when you think about it... isn't the Z63A closer to the W3A since it has integrated graphics?
Anyhow... Hope everything works out for you GregM; best of luck with your shopping.

The Z63A is the barebone version of the W3 series.
The Z70A is the Sonoma barebone of the M6 series.

Heh... they keep changing because ASUS decided to change its model number/letter scheme; all barebones seem to start with Z now, and its ensemble notebooks start with anything else [xx(]

P.S Thanks dt34 [ ;)] I'll do my best to keep the peace around here...heh.

    QUESTION ABOUT Z70a Audio:

ISTNC says it has stereo speakers. The ASUS website's description of the M6000a -- which I assume is the international model number; it has the 915-GM ICH-6M chipset, onboard graphics, etc. -- says it "come equipped with four-way surround sound speakers for powerful sound quality."

    [?]Confirmation please?[?]

Well the Z70a is using the M6bne chassis which has speaker in the front under the chassis and then two right under the screen. They are technically 4 way speakers. Anyone with an M6bne or M6bn can give you their opinion on those......... mine is that I don't think the sound is much better than the 15.1" model which doesn't have the speakers in the screen.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Correct me if i am wrong but the z70a should have the same sound as the z71v. In that case it should be of very hi quality for a laptop. Then again it can also be the same sound as the z71a which is still good but not as great as the z71v. The two extra speakers on the m6bne made no difference on sound quality atleast not to my ears. z71v has supperb sound quality. We can only only hope the same chipset is adopted for all the z models. Time will tell once they are reviewed :)
