if you take pre order for any of those i wish you lots of luck! Asus has repeatedly confirmed these are all concepts and will not be available any time soon. This was also on a need to know basis. I guess everyone here needs to know that most of these will not be released in the states

Coriolis, is U1F-A1 what you meant? U1F-A1 is not listed under santa rosa platform, but the spec looks like this:

    U7500, WXGA (1366 x 768), 1.5GB Memory, 100GB HD, 802.11 a/b/g, Vista Business. MSRP: $2099 External DVDRW is still optional for the U1 series.

But some of them were announced by Asus North America to be released at the end of August, yes? Particularly the F8SV-A1, the V2S-A1, the G1S-A2, the V1S-A1, and the G2S-A2/A3. I haven't heard about the other one's coming to North America, but the models I listed are pretty much confirmed, yes?

Yep, there is a press release on the AsusTek site (look for the link in the first post of this thread) that essentially announces all of the models in the thread title. Also, the G1S-A1 and G2S-A1 have already been shipping for a month now, or even more.

Cori: On the first post, you should also put info of the R1E tablet.

minor matter, but with the older generation V2JE it came with an optical mouse and a bag

is this the same for V2s?

All ASUS notebooks include a bag and a mouse, unless it says it doesn't(I don't think there is one without atm).

The refresh W3J didn't come with one, specifically the T2500, 2.0Ghz. At least I didn't get one in the box. :(

I'm particularly interested in the R1E refreshed, any news on that? The F8SV looks very W3J-like and promising as well.

I'd be interested in knowing the features the F8Sv has that the V2S doesnt (besides the different GPUs). What other features is the V2S lacking e.g. Lightscribe? like the above poster mentioned.

The V2S should have more features than the F8Sv given the V2s has all of the business class features (TPM, Fingerprint reader, Metal Alloy)

Maybe if your interested in the widows versions.
F8 have vista Home Premium V2 have the vista Business.
The V2S can have an optional docking station.
The V2S come with 6 Cell and 9 Cell batteries in the box.
The V2S have a spill proof keyboard.
And I'm not sure about the LightScribe.Someone could confirm that?
I'm also thinking of upgrading to Blue ray writer drive later, does that void the warranty?

That is very nice, since V series seem to have rather poor battery life, but 9 Cell will make almost V2S as big as some 15inch laptops. :)

I was a bit sceptical about whether there'd actually be an extra battery back, but this site seems to agree with Excal. A nice bonus.

(It would be nice if you could confirm this for us, ExcaliberPC. Just to make sure :).)

    Price? Found prices from 1599 - 2400€ for V1S
    1799 - 2000€ for V2S
Far worst prices found in "tamtadaa" Fiiinland.. Now didnt see that one coming..

Seems odd that the more expensive V1s dosent come with a free 6 cell, the main is only 8 not 9, Though 9 Cell is available in Australia.

to my understanding, all the hardware that is original to the laptop is all under warranty. So if you swap out the optical drive, everything is still under warranty except for the new blu ray.

if this is wrong somebody please correct me.

That is correct, unless adding an unsupported optical drive caused the laptop to fail, then any failed components would not be supported under warranty. However any issues unrelated to the new optical drive have to be covered by warranty, under federal law.

It probably does. I can't see them doing that kind of touchpad design without retaining the FP reader, so I think its just that ExcaliberPC doesn't have it listed on their site yet.

    Hi,

I have a couple of questions that I'd like cleared up, I've done my best reading the forums, but sometimes gone in circles in terms of what's in the current systems and what "should" be offered in the new systems.

How worthwhile is it to wait for the refresh of the G1S? So far what I've been able to gather is that the G1S-A2/A3 will have an extra 1GB of Turbo memory. Asus' website seems to say this is the best thing ever, but I've been told Vista doesn't even use it properly yet so won't see an performance increase? Thoughts?

Next, the refresh is also supposed to up the HD from 160GB 5400rpm to 200GB 7200rpm. Worth waiting for, or can I just accomplish the same thing by customizing the A1 with a better HD? Which will be cheaper?

DDR2 vs DDR3, so my confusion is that there's RAM and then there's also video memory. People have posted things like the DDR2 version is 512MB and the DDR3 version is 256MB. I'm assuming they're talking then about the video card memory. The DDR3 is supposed to be better, but comes with less VRAM. So which is the more powerful option? Is only the nVidia 8600GT with DDR2 with 256MB going to be available in the G1S? Or will that change in the refresh to DDR3? Somebody also posted that G1S would be better then V1S if you're a gamer because V1S uses DDR2. Does that mean that G1S is going to have DDR3? Because ExcaliburPC currently lists it with DDR2? Sorry, I'm just very confused over the video cards, because people have said different things. Can someone spell it out for me plainly in terms of power? nVidia 8600 GS vs 8600 GT and for the different memories? And what's offered with what?

Should I be looking at the V1S or V2S computers since they'll come with the new DDR3 memory? Or is G1S still better in terms of gaming performance?

Any other new things in the refresh that I should know about? Does anyone have a decent idea of the timeline for the release of the refresh now? ASUS has announced on their website, when can we expect to see it in stores? Second week of August? I ask, because currently there's a $90 rebate on the G1S-A1 until the end of July at canada computers (maybe they're trying to clear their stock of the A1?) Can someone give an estimate of price differences too?

Is the only difference between the G1S and G2S screen size (and the shorter battery life that will accompany that) and the added weight?

Thanks for any help, I was all set to buy the G1S-A1 today until I saw the post about the refresh. I know there'll always be something better in the future, but if the refresh is due out very soon then I wanted to stop and see whether waiting an extra week or two would be worth it. I'm new to laptops (had a desktop all my life), want something powerful to game on (essentially a desktop replacement), and also something semi portable. Thanks again for any help that people can offer.

    Cheers,
    Chris

As far as VRAM goes, only the G1s and the G2s (to my knowledge) have the higher clocked GDDR3 video memory, so they will be better for gaming than any other 8600M-GT notebook. The V2s will have GDDR3 VRAM, but it will have the inferior 8600M-GS graphics card, so it won't even match up to a DDR2 8600M-GT such as the one in the F8sv.

Also, I think it would probably be cheaper to get the G1s-A1, buy your own 200GB 7200RPM HDD, and sell the old one on eBay.

Intel Turbo Memory has been proven to add a little performance in hard drive access speed but the difference is minimal. Maybe in the future when they get the BIOS / drivers to utilize it better, then it will make a bigger difference.

You can accomplish the same thing by just buying a separate hard drive and popping that into the computer. That way you'll have two hard drives in case one fails :)

You're absolutely right that it's video memory. The GDDR3 performs better than GDDR2 due to the higher clock speed. Plus, the card is limited by the 128-bit memory bus, so any gaming above 1400 x 900 maybe limited by graphics settings. The G1s will always go with the GDDR3 memory I'd assume since it's a gaming laptop. Basically 8600GT GDDR3 > 8600GT GDDR2 (though not by much)> 8600GS GDDR3
    G1s/G2s = 8600GT 256MB GDDR3
V1s = 8600GT 512MB GDDR2 (the 512MB will help with more textures etc, but it's limited by the memory bus)
    V2s = 8600GS 256MB GDDR3 (I think, i forgot if it's 256 or 512mb)

Depends what you're looking for. G1s are better for gaming while the V1s and V2s offer better build quality and durability. They are business laptops after all.

I'd say mid August to early September is a good time frame to expect. The price differences can be taken from Excalibur's site, I'd expect around that much.

Essentially, yes. I think the G2s have more ports though

So essentially then the only real difference is the extra 1GB of Intel turbo memory (how does the turbo memory work? does it mean that essentially the computer has 3GB of RAM?). What're peoples feelings on whether this is worth another month wait and judging from excalibur's site an extra $95? Oh one other question, that availability of late August/early September, does that hold for in Canada too?

Thanks for the fast response! :)

no it is not essentially 3GB of RAM. the idea behind the Turbo Memory is that the files you access more often will be stored in the memory, thus reducing lag time it takes the hard drive to spin up and find your files. basically think of it as a super fast 1gb drive where info is stored. however, initial tests don't prove that it helps much.
like people say, if you need it now, get it, don't bother waiting. if you can wait, wait.

no problem. welcome to the forums :)

The effects of Turbo Memory (Robson) are more than questionable, since AnandTech has posted two articles with one saying that Robson is completely useless and the other saying that it is only mostly useless, and two major notebook companies (HP and Sony) publically dismissing it, saying that it does not offer the end user any benefit. So I would say, its not really something you are missing, but if you really need it, you can buy an Asus TurboMemory card ($30 or less) from a reseller and install it yourself.

For the hard drive upgrade, it is not worth the money to go for the A2. You can get the hard drive itself for cheaper than the $200USD (plus the rebate) it costs to upgrade to the A2.

The only difference between the G1 and the G2 is the casing and screen, so inside they are the same. The G2 weighs a lot more, has lower battery life, and it costs $100 more, so its not worth it at all unless you really need the higher WUXGA 17" screen.

By going with the G1S-A1 instead of the A2, you will not be missing much, if at all, and you save plenty of cash ;)

    Hey Everyone
I've pretty-much settled on the VX2s as my new laptop after my Alienware/Celvo failed for good this past May. However, I cannot find many details on the release dates for the VX2s.
Does anyone have a solid/general/vague idea when it will be released?

Online vendors are running-out of the VX2 or dropping it from their line-ups, but ASUS is promoting it hard. This makes me think that an overstock-purge is taking place and that the marketing folks at ASUS are attempting to limit their Cost-of-goods loss. This is speculation on my part.

Does anyone have real info on this?
My curiosity is getting the better of me in this instance.

    Thank you
    -JSC

Asus is promoting the VX2 model line as a whole, which is currently undergoing a refresh. The VX2 that resellers are selling/out of is the older VX2 model (not sure of the suffix, but its the one with Core 2 Duo Merom and DX9 Go7700 graphics) whereas Asus is supposed to be shipping the VX2S (Centrino Pro Santa Rosa and DX10 8600GT) pretty soon. Probably within the next month or next couple of months is my best guess as to the release date.

    Thanks Vivek

A general rule ASUS had was to not release the 'refreshes' until the older models were all sold from the distributers. However, realistically thinking, it wouldn't always be possible, so they might of scrapped that idea(or did they?).

Well, looking at the Asus summer catalogue (posted by Excaliber PC), the A8Js was somewhere in the middle, and the F8Sv was featured a few pages after that. So I think they might be changing the rule now.
