What do you guys think the odds are of starting and setting up a group buy for the f8sv?

I know MileStone PC has done this before with other asus laptops?

PS: IS the GPU in the f8sv gddr3 or gddr2?

It's probably DDR2, it has not been confirmed but the realistic idea sways that way.

starting and setting up a group by will be hard for the F8 with the V1 and V2 being released so close to when the F8 is released. if it will be $200 cheaper I'll buy it though :p

I'm getting pretty serious about this whole group buy thing. I'm thinking about starting a new thread and check if there is a large interest in the asus f8sv. If there is, I'll start contacting retailers, though I'm keen on MileStonePC as they ship to Canada and the US, and they have done this before?

So, should I start a new thread?

Yep, MPC did this with the A8Js and some other models last year.

The F8Sv is retailing for $200 less than the V2S, and $300 less than the V1S...Not sure of what you are saying.

It is in the first post. Its either the PCWorld advert or the July Notebook Catalogue, forgot which one exactly.

I meant if we can get the group rate so that the F8Sv is around $150 to 200 less than retail I'd but it =]

Not a chance. Last time it was like $70 off along with a free Asus router worth $100 or so. Total value came out to almost $200, but not nearly that much in cash savings.

And if the group buy on the V2S brought the price down by $200 (now I sound like wuzer ;)) I would probably get that. Unfortunately, it won't happen (see above) and I will end up getting an F8Sv.

From reading this thread I get the impression that the V1s/V2s will be alot sturdier and have a better build quality than the F8s... How much of a difference are we talking here? I spose the F8 will be plastic and the V1s/V2s will be magnesium or some such?

    you're right meh_cd
the V1s and V2s will be made out of magnesium alloy and ABS plastic (i think) while the F8Sv will be made almost entirely from ABS plastic.

Seems like we have a few takers for a V2s group buy...I'm thinking we'll need at least 10 if we're to get a special deal from Milestone or whoever we approach about it.

i think all Asus laptops come with the Global warranty unless you modify the CPU, in which case the reseller should offer you their warranty.

All Asus ensemble notebooks come with 2 years global warranty, regardless of who you purchased the system from. Sometimes, if you choose to upgrade the CPU or the like, the Asus warranty is void, and the reseller may provide warranty from his side.

I figure I'm out of the running (being in the UK), but I'm interested in how they're organised :).

not necasarily Ultim4, whoever organises it could ship it to you but you would still be paying on postage. Are you really likely to shave all that much off? the Resellers are only allowed to discount Asus laptops to a certain point and as excalibur PC already has $50 off the RRP I dont see them having much more room to discount for you.

Yeah, but there are going to be zero people in the F8 group now, since ASUS has officially announced the F8 and it is going to have the 8600 GS, not GT.

It doesn't make any sense for it to have the 8600GS, and they had it listed as having the 8600GT in their catalogue.
