Damnit. Now I just wish xoticpc would start carrying them (V2s and F8s) so I could see what the price is after I slap in a larger hard drive.

I would actually prefer Fn in the corner as that's what I'm used to from my current laptop, and I have no problem with that. There are so many other differences from a regular 104 layout as well, so you'll still have to remap your mind ;)

But - to be totally honest, I find it much more ergonomic to use my pinky on the corner key than the one next to it. And I'm pretty shure I use the Ctrl key more often than the Fn key...

As to WHY they choose this layout, can it have something to do with the electronic circuit layout?

i don't think so...i think it's mostly just different standards in different parts of the world.

    Hmm...

Does anyone know if the V2Sv will come with both the 6 cell and 9 cell batteries out of the box like the V2Je?

ExcaliberPC has stated that it will. Eddie has said that he's not sure if it will or not, as the specifications aren't final.

I highly doubt it, since it usually stays constant throughout the notebook line (Asus is the only manuf I have seen to do both - everyone else is constant). And I don't see why a circuit would limit anything - all they would have to do is switch the two in the hardware mapping of the keys....And label them properly of course. In the design stages, its not difficult to switch them.

Yes I also think it's a matter of convention rather than circuitry. However, why would they switch it in laptops if Ctrl is universally the corner key in desktop keyboards?

Because the Fn key is a highly useful one in many laptops. It controls the numberpad, sometimes volume controls, screen brightness, and any other "secondary" key functions that don't have their own dedicated key on a small laptop keyboard.

Yep, as odin said. However, why they need to have it vary from company to company (or, in Asus' case, from model to model) I have no idea.

What is interesting though is that most American companies (HP, Dell, Gateway, but not Apple) use the Ctrl in the corner, and Asian brands seem to like the Fn key in the corner.

I was just on the phone with Norwegian retail dealer Komplett and I asked what the "unconfirmed" delivery date meant in case of the V1S:

"It simply mean that Asus cannot garantee that they will be able to deliver by that date."

Others report it confirmed in stock by 09.06, so I guess assembly of the V1S is somewhat low priority until the end of the month.

The interesting part about that is that Dell and HP use mostly Asian ODMs anyway, so why would companies like Asus and Compal make normal layouts for their ODM partners and then the switched layouts for their own laptops?

I think that's a pretty good price for the VX2s.
Essentially, it's the exact same price as the non SR version, and then there is an option for the blue-ray drive +$400.

    Nice job Asus.

ODMs only build Dell/HP (etc)'s notebooks, only very rarely do they design their notebooks. For example, I'm convinced that Asus had a hand in the design of the M1330 that they are building for Dell. But they probably aren't going to change the layout of the ctrl key thats been in that place on all dell computers ever made...

I don't think the question of FN/CTRL button 'switching' can be answered that easily but from the mouths of ASUS themselves. In saying that, we should really contact them(or a dealer) and see whats up with that. Whatever the reason may be, at least it'll be a solid answer :p

I have this stupid question to ask... Does the V2S trackpad have a feature that acts like a mouse scroll wheel. Where if you slide (scroll) your finger on the right side of the trackpad, the page will scroll down

Yeap, all Synaptics touchpads(Pretty much 80% of notebooks use a Synaptics touchpad) have virtual scrolling.

Once you remove the marketing jargon, I think that means its a matte screen, since it says nothing about Glare-type or anything.

Has the IFL90 actually started shipping yet? (I assume not, since there haven't been any reviews posted yet...)

And the F8Sv doesn't seem to be hopeful before October, Milestone PC essentially said that they don't have confirmation from Asus on anything about it - no specs, no price, no ETA... :(

Yeah people have gotten their laptops, however they are the people who ordered the Sager 2090 and not the Compal IFL90 (same laptop, different name). I finally decided to change once I realized I wouldn't get a laptop before school starts either way. Plus IMHO the V1s will be a much better quality laptop for cheaper. :D

Probably not cheaper, but better quality.

And I know what the Sager NP2090 is, I was following the IFL90 for a while, and the NP2090 was very very tempting, since it was a ton cheaper.

I emailed Donald (at powernotebooks.com) and he said that the WXGA NP2090 is now shipping in 4-5 days, although the WSXGA+ is still severely backordered.

So if Asus doesn't get a move on with the F8Sv, then it will be a WXGA NP2090. Its cheaper as well, so no problems there...

There will be the W2 coming out, possibly named the W2w, but as for when, I don't know, nor the GPU. However, ASUS is putting out the popular models with the S.R. chipset first, so the W2 may take a month or two.

I'd make the W series a bit higher,

W/V/VX/U are all pretty high, they use high grade materials. However, it still varies, the W2, W1 and W3 were very well built with carbon fibre and brushed aluminum while the W7 is magnesium composite and carbon fibre composite and is medicore(above average).

    Hey all!

I'm seriously, almost to the point of purchasing the G2s-A1 as it seems to be a very well rounded notebook that will provide me good service for many years. But the reason why I am posting is because I would like to know what the latest is on the next Asus G1/G2s that are "supposedly" coming out (ex:G2s-A3). If they are coming out within the next few weeks, I'll wait to see if the price of the G2s-A1 drops, if not... I'll be rockin' a new sweet lappy within the next few days!

    Thanks,
    >>meinks
