Cool. I wonder how you access the voltage settings? Presumably
"Easy Overclock" only adjusts frequency multipliers and not voltages.

The A7V (desktop motherboard) had a bunch of jumpers, but I assume
access would be too difficult in the case of a laptop so I had thought it
    might be a BIOS setting.

I got mine 2 weeks ago in Hong Kong.

I had done a lot of research and comparisons of different computers before settling on this one. If others would like me to write a review and post some pictures id consider it. Is there an owners thread for this model.

Anyone done a screen upgrade on the N82JQ/JV? I found a 40-pin LED backlit
12x7.4 screen in 1600x900 that may work, but it depends on the connector
positions. Also, there didn't appear to be much consistency between 14.0 and
14.1 specifications. Both are listed as having 12x7.4 dimensions and I'm not
sure whether the .1 difference is enough to prevent a replacement from fitting.
Are there actually two different size standards for 14 inch screens or is that
just the viewable region--meaning I might need a different screen bezel?

The N82JV came out in the Netherlands today.
For €970,-(which is about $1260 at the moment, almost $300 more expensive than de i5 450m model is the US) you get a Core i5 520m, nvidia GT335m, 4GB, 1366*768 screen. For that price the only thing holding me back is the lack of backlit keyboard and aluminum casing. And how is the sound of asus laptops?
edit : colour is black instead of brown

ok i read the detailed review and it seems like the graphics card is quite comparable to the ati 5650 on the acer aspire 3820tg and the battery life is quite comparable. The only problem is, I cant find a spare n82 keyboard so if I order it from computeruniverse, I will have to use the german keyboard. Also it doesnt have direct x 11 so i really cant decide... does anyone know a better site to order it from?

Well, I couldn't wait a little longer, so I ended up going for the Acer TimelineX AS4820TG-3195 (the one with the i5). It was cheaper before tax and about the same after tax. Sure, I miss out on the nicer ASUS warranty and the USB 3.0 ports, but I'm happy with my purchase. Also, the 5650 seems to handle some games that I play much better (e.g. BF: BC2) and is about 0.4-0.5 pounds lighter. :D

    That's not 3dmark06...its a different test: 3dmark Vantage.

Your 5870 would crush the 335m by about 50%-70%.

    Is this STILL waiting?

Am I able to purchase this in the US??

How can I get one in the US with optimus?

It seems that Asus is selling only the N82JQ in the US and selling the N82JV elsewhere. In other words, no N82 Optimus notebooks in the US.

    Ooo!

Gaming Laptops - XOTIC PC - Gaming Notebooks - Custom Laptops - Custom Notebooks

^^^ The above site Allows you to CUSTOMIZE your N82, including processor swap outs, additional cooling glue, skinning, ssd options, switching the optical drive for an ssd, etc.

    Anyways, heres my questions;

    1) How hard would it be to swap out an HDD myself? Is it right under battery panel, or waay ontop motherboard?

    2) How hard would it be to put an HD screen (1600x900), or how much would it cost from a local tech guy?

1920x1080 vs 1366x768? That's not the same test.

EDIT: Wait... they actually test it at 1024x768. So not a fair comparison at all.

HDD is very easy, there is a separate door to access the HDD, just replace and reinstall, the only thing about the N82 is you cannot access the CPU, GPU or WIFI card without cracking the chassis in half.

In terms of screen, you can swap it but I don't think you can change the res.

However, the Intel Core i5-450M processor supposedly comes with it....

Can some one find the JV-X1 on another site that has an explanation?

Thanks for the clarification, so if you purchased an i5 model with Optimus, then upgraded the CPU from original, to anything up to an i7-660UM you could have an i7+optimus working because it was already enabled with the base i5 install?

The 660UM is a low voltage processor, right? You wouldn't want to replace
the 450m with that. I suspect you'd want the 620m.

Has anyone of the owners here have tried to overclock the GPU yet?

I just wonder, because the standard core frequency of 450Mhz is rather low.
And people in the Alienware 11MX section can easily get around 550Mhz.

    Nice review.

I don't get what the project managers of the N82 and the HP Envy 15 are thinking when they allowed laptops with restricted lid motions to be built and sold.

Just this fact alone makes me glad that I didn't wait to buy this laptop.

    New review finally:
Asus N82Jv-X1 Review - A Review of the Asus N82Jv-X1

Luckily all the negatives are things we've expected: Not great battery life, somewhat larger than other 14 inchers.
They say the screen, speakers, and keyboard are decent. The review was clearly written by a gamer. He keeps comparing it to the Y460, but fails to mention that laptop's horrendous screen and heat.

I'm now very excited to get this laptop tomorrow.

    Initial impressions:
(In comparison to Envy 15, 14, and Lenovo Y460)

Build quality is very good. The laptop feelds very sturdy and solid. Almost on par with envy 14 despite plastic material. Keyboard is decent and better than the envy 14. They both flex a teeny tiny bit, but the ASUS' center flex doesn't bother me for some reason. Also the keys feel more responsive than the envy's.

Screen: Terrible/mediocre (for my standards). Better and worse than the Y460's in some ways. AUO screen has very poor viewing angles. Colors look good, but pixel pitch is very large. When viewing movies, vertical lines are noticeable. Gradients are fine however. I still have to update the graphics drivers.
From what I've read, the y460 and n82jv screens are pretty average for laptops in this class.

I'll see if updating the graphics drivers help the vertical line/screen door issue. I'll also test the battery life if I ever get to that.

    Update:
Seems the nvidia drivers were responsible for the strange vertical lines. The image quality still isn't great, but it's good enough. After going through so many cruddy laptops with horrible problems, I may just settle for the best of the worst. I'm going to install an ssd and update you later on my experiences.

I have to say that I'm liking this laptop more and more. Despite some initial driver hitches, the n82jv is a very nice machine for the price.

-The CPU whines much less than the y460 or Envys, which is huge for me.
-The keyboard is very nice to type on, despite minor flex.
-The chassis is incredibly solid and feels great to carry around unlike the Y460 or my old V1s.
-Speakers are okay sounding, maybe a bit too soft.

I have yet to test out gaming performance or battery. The indicator does suggest I have about ~3:30 with wireless on and medium brightness. I think I can get this up with some tweaking.
I'll also get starcraft 2 in a couple days and test that out.

Yup it's the amazon version. i5-450 and gt335m. I installed a 240gb vertex 2 and an intel 6200N (not so easy). The included wireless card worked fine. Some of the drivers on the asus page are mislabeled/incorrect. You'll have to do a bit of searching if you fresh install.

I can't get optimus to work. The 259 drivers have no artifacts or distortions but optimus and the nvidia card are disabled.
Optimus works with lower drivers, but the nvidia graphics look blurry and terrible on videos.

Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with the gt335m.

EDIT: To test these artfiacts and distortions I've been using high-def movies that looked fine on my old computer. Using videos with different viewers/codecs, the artifacts aren't consistent. I think my problem is caused by some combination of optimus and certain video codecs.
An 1080p mp4 trailer looks fine running on the 335m. Youtube is one thing that definitely does not work on the 335m/optimus, but it's fine if i set it to run on intel.

I was panicking for a bit, but at least it's not the card or monitor. I'm sure these issues will be dealt with in future flash/optimus releases.

Anandtech has posted a review of the n82: ASUS' N82Jv: Jack-Of-All-Trades - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

They pretty much bemoan the tiny battery and bad lcd crippling an otherwise fantastically well-rounded package.

Damn, I was really looking forward to buying this machine, but the battery life is just too low.

The review also mentions that it seems like ASUS is planning to make a 8-cell variant but that it will not hit US markets! Has anyone else heard about this?
