I've the same problem after upgrade to 8.1. I've tried everything including factory reset and flashing the newest bios from Asus site. I think it is a hardware problem. I'm sending it to RMA now.

Long story short. After small talk with ASUS they suggested to update BIOS. I did it and it works also with windows 8.1. From the other hand different user of n56jr send his on guaranty. He get info that the main board will be changed... the same issue/info he found on croatian forum.

Finaly after reinstaltion etc. and forcing to use GF I did it. FarCry is working with geforce:
1920x1080, DX11 Very High Preset (HDAO, Standard Alpha To Coverage) 2x MSAA
FPS: 28-40 (average 32, under 30 once for a second!).
    Temp:
    CPU:91C
    GPU:79oC
    case(near CAPSLOCK): 41,5C

Noise (cecked with app for Android near head): +-44dB

I want to buy new laptop but I am not desided which. Asus N56JR or ASUS N550JV.
How noisy is N56 while watching HD video and surfing internet?

It is noticeable but tolerable while watching a movie but the movie's sound may exceeds it.
Surfing the net uses lesser power therefore it's slightly lower in noise.

I would go with N56JR due to superior GPU. But if you don't need that extra horsepower then you can also settle with N550JV just fine.

I'm also still thinking about which one should I buy, N550 or N56JR. I saw those specs on B&H Photo Video, N550 has bluetooth, but only 3 USB ports; N56JR has 4 USB ports but no bluetooth....this is like the pain in my axx.

Also, can anyone answer me is the screen on N550(IPS) better than the one on N56JR?

    Thanks for advice.

My N56jr had Bluetooth...and yes the IPS panel on the N550jv has much better vertical viewing angles but is glossy if you get the touch version. If you get the N550jv-DB71 non-touch model you will get matte screen and still IPS. I enjoyed the more beefy GTX 760M (DDR5 RAM) in the N56jr over the GT 750M (DDR3 RAM) of the N550jv but I didn't care for the viewing angles although for a TN panel they are pretty darn good.

Also if you are planning an SSD upgrade the N56jr is way easier to access the drive and RAM. It has a small cover on the bottom that you can remove easily with one screw and pushing forward and upwards, whereas the N550jv requires removing the entire bottom cover that has tiny plastic clips that are easily broken.

N56JR has bluetooth , what's the complete model no. with your N56JR? I checked the one which is N56JR-EH71, it doesn't mention bluetooth. Here is the link: ASUS N56JR-EH71 15.6" Notebook Computer (Black) N56JR-EH71

Lucky I got a extra SSD that I'm planning to put it in.

The user manual found online at Asus site has the directions for removing the bottom cover in case you need it for your SSD install.

    Enjoy the new laptop.

No idea about N550 but N56JR under load is a bit noissy but not dissturbing. Probably N550 should be more silent due to 2 fans and weaker GPU. As user of N56JR I will recomend it but check it because mine had scrapped surface of touchpad in corner.

I just received my N56JR today. I would like to upgrade it to Windows 8.1, but before I do has anyone on here been able to do this successfully? I may just leave it at Windows 8 for now if it's going to be more trouble than it's worth.

You can go straight for the upgrade to Win 8.1, then update drivers after.

Hey, so one other issue. I'm just now trying to charge the Notebook for the first time and nothing seems to be happening. Is there a setting that could possibly be causing this or is it automatically a faulty charger?

    Hello,
I intend to buy Asus N56JR, but I saw in the technical specification of the model wireless network card is Intel ® Wireless-N 7260. Is it possible after the purchase to mount Intel ® Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 or Intel ® Dual Band Wireless- AC 7260 in authorized service center or BIOS has a white list for wireless network adapters and prevents such upgrade? And what will be the impact of such intervention on my 2 years warranty. I want to know this before I pay you € 1,000 for a laptop which would be useless in an area with over 45 wireless networks working b/g/n 2.4 gHz and none besides mine working a/b/g/n 5.0 gHz with perfect quality and high speed. Its a strange for me to see such a laptop without dual band wireless and 2 few years old (2007 and 2009) laptops with.

What is the % displayed on your battery at this moment? One of my other Asus laptops would not start charging until it the % drops below 95. I don't recall if it still displayed "plugged in" or not, even though it was plugged in.

It was at around 5%. Since I just received this Notebook a couple days ago I'm just going to send it back and get a new one. The ASUS people believe it is a hardware issue.

It is battery protection that it doesn't recharge until it drops below 95%.

Asus rarely (if ever?) have such limitations in the bios.
Wanted to change my card as well, until I realized it was major pain in the butt since you have to disassemble A LOT to get top half and bottom hald to split apart so you can unscrew the card and change it. Stupid move to not make the card replacable from the maintenance flap.

Need some answers to several questions, thank you in advance!

    1) Can I swap the HDD and install an SSD inside as a boot drive? If so, I can still use the recovery disc (or which ever disc) to reinstall Windows into the SSD right?

    2) What if I left the HDD there but install a mSATA SSD and installing Windows into the mSATA SSD. Can this work?

    3) Is the RAM easily upgradable?

    4) If compared to the MSI GE-60, the variant with the GTX765M, which is hotter? I'm talking about the surface temperature because that irks me the most.

    Thank you

    1) Yes and yes though you would be better off doing a clean install. (key is in the bios so it should activate itself)

    2) There is no mSATA port

    3) Yes it's under the service hatch.

    4) Probably cooler but the 765M is a totally different league in terms of performance.

Intel-based notebooks can handle more than Intel but 7260 is like the best WLAN adapter you can have on the system.
Please note that there are two versions of 7260, one is bgn and the other is bgn+ac.

Thanks. Actually the difference between GTX760M and GTX765M is little according to:

Computer Games on Laptop Graphic Cards - NotebookCheck.net Tech

I went out to my local mall to check out the N56JR but couldn't find it anywhere, can the owners shed some light on the surface temperature (keyboard and touchpad) because this is quite important for me. On idle and during gaming. Nothing worse than having it to be hot and uncomfortable. Please do tell whether you're using a laptop cooler and whether there's air conditioning or not.

    Thanks again!

Well, after a week of use my N56JR is already broken. I already contact Asus support and I'm waiting for their answer. My 760m GTX stopped working. I went to my device manager and found this gtx 760.jpg

In the properties it reported as code 43. The device was turned off because there were problems( im paraphrasing, my OS is not in english).
I uninstalled the drivers and tried to get the new ones, but they could not be installed because the install setup could not detect the 760m GTX, however the yellow icon was now gone. I ran GPU-Z and this is what I got. gpuz 760.gif I believe the gfx maybe dead. Im just leaving this here incase anyone comes across the same problem. I'll report back when Asus gives me an answer to my problem.

EDIT: yeah I also tried updating the bios, but it was already in the latest version.

Hi, am trying to decide between ge40 and n56jr.
I am looking for long battery life.
N56jr seems to have a better build. But I heard the battery performance is below average.
Can any users confirm how long this n56jr last WiFi browsing at comfortable brightness?
Your feedback is very much appreciated.

From what I know GE 40 is hot hot hot, the units I demo-ed at Lowyat Plaza are also hot hot hot. Replacing the termal paste will help a bit but not much according to a local forumer.

Hey Kevin. Thanks for your reply.
I know about the 'hotness' of ge40. Unfortunately its the only laptop within my budget that offer performance and long battery life. Until I found n56jr. Was hoping if n56jr somehow offer around 4+ hours of WiFi browsing. It will be my next laptop instead of ge40.

I'm pretty sure you can. It's quite a common for most laptops in the market as the 2.5" slot is universal. (except for a few Dell laptops which aren't compatible with the motherboard LOL)

You can replace the HDD with an SSD, but not ad an SSD as there is only one disk slot.

Between 3 and 4 hrs depending on usage and setting (backlit keyboard on or off, screen brightness setting, playing music or not). Usually closer to 3 hrs with my usage (backlit keyboard on and playing music).

hi i've samsung ssd in the main bay and old hdd in secondary bay (caddy). Everything work great except one thing, if I go to restart the machine after windows says 'Restarting' then the screen goes black
just before it reposts, the HDD(in caddy instead CD) makes a little squeal. The kind you might get if you just rip the power cable out before it's had a chance to park - it's not a good sound.
Any ideas, where is the problem? please help

Hi, interested in this laptop and wanted to ask current owners a few things.

    - Do the holes of the speakers tend to collect dust easily?
    - The subwoofer, how bad is the sound without it? I'm concerned about forgetting that it's connected when picking up the laptop and have it dangling by its cord. That subwoofer cord/jack doesn't seem very strong and I'm afraid that it might break after a few such accidents.
