Without sub, the speakers are still better than most 15" laptops.

Thanks for the reply. What about the speaker holes, do they tend to collect dust?

I am with ASUS in a fight about this machine. I thought the specs looked impressive for our needs as back-up + desktop replacement for a non-profit doing video-editing and design work.
Bought the laptop without OS, thought I would install W7 on it.
BIG MISTAKE
The N56 series has eight mayor groups differing in the last two letters (and a lot on internal variations). Of those eight, four have support for W8 + W8.1. Two have W8 +W8.1 +W7 support. One has W8 +W7 support and one has ONLY support for W8. No drivers for W7 and NO drivers for W8.1 Guess which one that is and which one I bought.. correct, the one we are discussing here: ... the N56JR. :hi2: :hi2:
So I did not enjoyed this machine much yet. When installing W7, all controller drivers were missing. I managed all drivers but the SM bus controller. Got Inter graphics working. Somehow the Geforce was installed through Windows update but is not working. -
Robomcd - can you not return it for any reason within 14 days, as long as it's not damaged? It's the norm here in the EU, I don't know how it is where you live(or even where you live). Besides, Windows 8 is superior in boot times and seems faster in general. I even get more FPS in games, and that's on a 5 year old laptop. Plus with Win8.1(which I haven't tried myself yet) it's basically windows 7 with all the benefits of 8.
Also, I'm no expert, but I think the variants of the n56 differ only in processor type/RAM size/ODD type/maybe graphics card if you mean differences between 2012 and 2013 models. Doesn't seem like it should affect what OS is supported much.
Again, I would need someone to confirm it, but I'm pretty sure that W7 drivers from the variant that you claim supports W7 should work on yours. -
With the N56JR, the only driver support ASUS gives is for W8. If W8.1 would be fully supported, I might have tried to get that, but they do NOT have drivers for W8.1 either. Like said, through the hardware IDs I got most of the drivers with exception of the SM Bus controller. The integrated Intel HD 4600 is doing all the graphic work because the GTX 760M does NOT work, NVIDIA is not sure which driver would-should work with W7 on this laptop, and another person tried to install W8.1 and ran smack into similar problems not being able to get the GPU to work.
A lot of the devices are not ultra new or are backward compatible so its easy to find W7 drivers for it. This SM bus, however, seems geared for W8 or W8.1. The ASUS the driver download page does not show that driver separately. I tried the Intel driver utility; in Explorer it did not even install, in Firefox it installed but kept analyzing the computer without end. After several tries of up to an hour, I gave up on that one as well. When trying to get the driver, you keep running into "use the driver utility tool". The strange thing is that this driver should be part of the chip set drivers so I do not understand why it did not install automatically. Running the Intel chipset driver software makes me a bit hesitant: will it repair or break everything again down to pieces? -
A couple of weeks ago, I updated the computer to windows 8.1. The GTX 760M stopped working but I downloaded a newer driver and it began working again.
A couple of days ago, Windows did some updates and after they were completed, I realized that my performance in games was horrible. I tried opening Nvidia Control Panel but I just get a message saying that "NVIDIA Display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU." I checked Device Manager and the GTX 760M has the yellow triangle over it and when I open up its properties I get a message that it is Code 43. I tried updating the BIOS but I am already on the current version. I have tried both the 331.65 NVIDIA and newest Intel GPU graphics and the ones from the Asus Support page and neither of them are making it work.
I'm not sure if I should go back to windows 8 instead of 8.1 or if I should try and contact Asus Support. -
Asus support gave me the steps that I wrote, so good luck and dont install Win 8.1 yet. -

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/vga/nVidia/NVDriver_Vista_Win7_Win8_Win8_1_64_VER331_56.zip This driver works for me on win 8.1 at least.

I wonder when Asus is going to hire that bios tweaker.. Or that engineer who knows anything at all about how computers actually work on the layer between software and hardware...

Asus have those people, their desktop boards have many such functions, it comes down to what they focus on.

Unlike desktop, each user has many choices to pick the best component to shape their system with different levels of budgeting. -
Just got off of live chat with Asus support and I was told "Yes we do plan to support 8.1 , the issues is that the operating system just came out so we are working on all drivers for all our models and we update as soon as we are finished with a driver"
They wanted me to send in the laptop but I'm going to wipe it and put it back to windows 8 and not update until drivers are available for windows 8.1. -
Has anyone disassembled this one yet?
I'm going to order N56JR or G750JW but after checking out how those G750s are built I'm more interested about this one. So does anyone have any pictures to share? -
You have one screw in the base where you can find the ram, and HDD

This and the g750 are different classes of machine. The g750 is not built badly unless you mean being easily upgradable which is not something asus do with any machine.

Here's two things that Asus could do to make your business easier, and to make the end-product -- which already is sold as is to consumers -- a better one.
1. Let resellers and retailers create bios setups tailored to the hardware setup, rather than locking a bios setup to a specific hardware config in a specific revision.
You've seen this specifically with the ram and the way Asus locks, moronically, the ram timing partially. So as to sabotage functions that Intel even advertises for their Panther point boards. Asus then preventing the dynamic clocking of ram functions from being used, while also lowering the battery drain. Which your customers see. And which prevents you from selling extra ram-chips in various shapes to your customers' needs.
I still own a pair of low volt ram that is essentially useless to me, thanks to Asus bios-tweakers. While the people who buy high-end ram, from for example you, will not get their money's worth.
2. Avoid softlocking by nvram and efi bios chains.
Asus does this, of course like all other manufacturers, in the belief that when the product gets old, people should buy a new product rather than keep the old one. And that if they don't, they should be punished if they're trying to upgrade to a new software foundation. Because that's how business works, apparently. That if I buy a car - then one day I will have to buy a new one if I want to change the rims on it. That's completely and perfectly good business.
3. Use standard upgradeable slots.
I mean, seriously -- you guys are retailers. Do you have any dialogue at all with Asus over the bios tweaking or upgrades of either OS or hardware? Can you make changes to the bios settings yourself? Repackage bios setups, and hope Asus' official updates won't break your customized setup? Will the computer tilt if I open the service hatch and install ram with tighter timing? Would it technically be possible to upgrade your graphics chip? Would I be willing to pay a certain amount extra money each year for upgrades -- until I buy another laptop - confident I'd get a great product once again - in three years? Perhaps sooner than I otherwise would have bought a new laptop.
You know, these are real questions that concern thousands of people who buy these kits. And it should be a goldmine for you as a reseller to have those options.
Lately, they've been going for a trail that very evidently targets "ease of use". By which they mean: "Ease of use for us, in that we have fewer hardware configurations, in order to make the support cycle easier and more like what Apple is allegedly doing, according to MacWorld". The aim with that being to make sure they can provide a more streamlined software package, and to be able to predict and handle the support issues more easily.
They've achieved none of that, and instead created unsolvable problems for end-users if they want to use the hardware they've bought.
And both of you know the specifics of that first hand. -
Anyone had played BF4 on this laptop? When I run the game it's crashing. BF3 runs without problem. BF4 crashes on Win 8 and Win 8.1. On Win 8.1 it runs but only on integrated graphics card.

Had you installed asus nVidia drivers before you managed to play bf4? -

Yes a recovery install would wipe everything.

2: If a product gets old it's not just one product gets old, it's the entire platform gets old.
3: Again, it's a laptop, heat and power consumption is always the concern in this small box vs a desktop. upgrade graphics chip will create more heat and pulling too much power. there are too many people complaining laptop running too hot and at the same time they want much powerful GPU.
You can always upgrade OS no problem, it wasn't even a issue.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

Asus has never supported replacing the parts in their machines, they are not the brand to go with if that is your intention. They are designed to be solid machines that are well cooled.
-
Does this laptop actually play any games? so far my first to games wouldnt play (BF4 and Just Cause 2)
Should i upgrade to 8.1 ? -
I would not recommend upgrading to windows 8.1 yet. It broke my Nvidia GTX 760M. I would not upgrade until Asus releases the drivers for it. I'm not sure if Battlefield 4 still works because I heard that EA is now requiring everyone to have 331.82 drivers or newer to play the game and those aren't available for this laptop. -

TNX the driver worked (in win 8), BF4 now works, and it looks beautiful

Yeah the 760m is much better than the old 660m and deserves the x60 name. Enjoy yoir battlefield

I just got this laptop last week at Microcenter.
I ran a clean install of Windows 7 Pro 64. I initially struggled looking for drivers and eventually I got all the drivers in.
Sound - its great, even better with subwoofer
Flight Simulator X - I'm able to play at full res with high settings at 29fps. I was able to select the 760M as the primary GPU for the sim. I initially ran this with Windows 8.1 but it was crashing often, which it prompted me to install Windows 7. There would be a stutter when a new sound is played. My guess is that the HDD is being a bottle neck.
Everything else so far is good besides the HDD. Consider upgrading it to a SSD. Let me know if you happen to find a good caddies around! -
-
Do you guys know if there is a laptop similar to this one, but slimmer? I like everything about it except it's depth.
Edit: Also is there a way to configure the specs? I saw the other options on their website: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/N56JR/#specifications. I don't really need 12 GB of RAM. It would be nice to save money here and there. Trading the extra RAM for a better (7200 RPM) hdd would be perfect. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Not really at the same price due to tbe heatsinking required for a quad i7 and the 760m.
-
Has anyone replaced their DVD drive with an SSD and if so, how is it?

Thanks in advance ! -

Hey all, I'm new to the forum. I have this laptop on the way to me in the mail, along with a samsung 256 GB SSD. This one here:
SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com
People seem to be pretty happy with this laptop, and I've not owned a decent PC of any kind in quite some time, nor gamed to speak of. I'm very much looking forward to getting my Starcraft II on. Two quick questions though. I remember reading someone earlier in this thread knocking the wifi just kind of generally, and then some other mentions of the particular wireless card included not having 802.11ac. Also some discussion as to whether the wireless in dual band or not. I think the last comment on that subject said it is dual band, but I guess I'm still not 100% sure. My current living situation will not allow me get a wired ethernet connection, I have to use the wifi. Will this be a problem? I'm very VERY much hoping that the answer to this question will basically be "no," obviously.
Here's my more serious inquiry, which actually has a couple parts. It's all about the HD swap. I've swapped out plenty of HDs and done fresh Windows installs, but there are a few aspects of this one I'm about to do that are new to me. First, I've never worked with an SSD, or even really used a computer that has one. I'm excited about it, but is there anything I should know? Second, a Windows product key that is wired into the BIOS is new to me. Does this just pretty much work automatically? Also, is the product key in the BIOS gonna be real touchy about what version of Windows 8 I use? I have a copy of a Windows 8 DVD that I burned from an iso described as "Windows 8 x64 untouched." That should work fine, right? I'm also not very familiar with Windows 8, and can't say I'm really thrilled about it based on my limited experience and what I've read. Sorry for rambling, but this is mainly what I want to ask: I keep reading about people using software to clone their Windows installation from the old drive to the new, as opposed to just booting from the optical drive after swapping the new drive in, formatting the HD and doing a fresh install. This is mainly to preserve installed programs and settings, right? Since I'm doing this to a new system, is there any reason I shouldn't do a fresh native install? Is there like, preloaded ASUS that will be on the laptop as shipped that I'm gonna want? It's usually just bloatware isn't it? And if there is stuff I want won't I be able to just grab the software pack(s) off the ASUS or whatever other relevant websites? Again sorry for rambling so much. I guess I'm out of practice as I've not posted to a forum in a while. Come to think of it though, I've never been the most concise cat in town. I'm super excited about the laptop. Thanks for reading and replies!
TL;DR: Swapping an SSD into a brand new ASUS N56JR-EH71. Should I bother to clone or can I just do a fresh install with a windows 8 dvd? -
Does anyone else's touchpad stop working if you don't use it for a while

Try an external mouse and see if it would have the same issue or not. -

Anyone know how to update nvidia drivers. I have some problems with Tomb Raider, is very laggy in normal settings.

Maybe you are playing with the intel card, try click with right button on icon and select the graphic card used

I'm using Fraps to check fps in game and show me 60 fps but its not smooth.
PD: Sorry, my english is bad. -
A few questions guys,
What is the default wireless card that comes with the N56jr? Did they finally gotten rid of that horrible Atheros cards that was notorious in disconnecting from past Asus N series and G series laptops?
You guys mention that the display is a TN panel that is anti-glare/matte, is it very clear or does it have a grainy/sparkly look to it especially on white backgrounds? Would you say it has a good color gamut for a TN panel? -
My N56JR has Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260
Opinions on the N56JR..
