The cooling pad will generally cool the laptop off slightly, it helps with air circulation overall so if your laptop does run too warm then it doesn't hurt to try the cooling pad.

Hi guys, so I just got this laptop. After reading through this thread I take it that I should avoid updating to win 8.1 as this is going to cause driver issues especially for the gpu it seems. It sounds like we will need to wait for Asus to release updated drivers supporting 8.1, is this correct? I wonder how much longer this will take as 8.1 has been out for several months now with update 1 releasing soon. How would I even know once Asus has released these updates? Is there an official site I could keep checking? Also, is it worth keeping the Asus installation wizard or is that a waste of time? Wondering if it would help keeping the correct drivers and avoiding potential issues... From what I've heard 8.1 improves on 8 in many ways.

there is a modded .INF driver, it is the official nvidia driver but with this modification it will detect your graphic card and install it, it apear this fix all problem with windows 8.1

I did a clean win8.1 install and loaded the default win 8.1 drivers.Everything seem to be working fine. Added the SSD and moved the HDD to the optical bay via a caddy. Everything seems to be working great. When i had updated to Win 8.1 had started getting the driver crashes so did a clean install with the default key and then replaced with the OEM key.

DOes anyone know where I can buy the Asus Warranty extension plan?

Anyone know when temps reach a danger ponit?

I was playing civ 5 yesterday (only had this laptop for a month) and temps got up to 83c. The laptop felt hotter than with usual gaming. Should I be worried?

Hi guys. I'm deciding what laptop should i get, mainly for school and gaming. And the graphic card on this machine is not bad as i check
I know the laptop has been here for while, do you guys still recommend it?
The build quality is my corner. The aluminium body has already caught my eyes! Wonder the touchpad and keyboard quality
If I have $1200 (US) right now, is this the best option i have, in term of battery life, performance, and the weight
I read the review, the battery life last about 4hours, and performance is about mid-range for a gaming laptop., the weight is ok too

For you and everyone else having the code 43 problem, go to Asus support page (general one, not the N56JR one) and look for "VGA". You should find the latest Nvidia and Intel drivers and those should work fine with Windows 8.1.

If you still have the code 43 problem after installing the correct drivers, just go in the device manager, deactivate and reactivate the 760M. You might get a black screen after reactivating which will force you to turn off the laptop by removing the battery. Turn it back on and everything should be working fine.

The code 43 is not permanent and is not hardware related (in this case).

    83C is nothing.

Mine gets around 92C (celsius) for CPU and 80C for GPU when gaming demanding games.
Still not worried. If you are reaching 98-99C you could start to worry, since that will most likely cause throttling, which again leads to lag.

the drive is hidden on purpose, so that does not go deleted improperly, because of thatyou can't see it at mycomputer. If you have any problems it will function normally when starting the boot pressing F11.

What do you suggest, N56JR-EH71 and N56JR-MH71?

    EH71 has 12gb ram 1tb 5400RPM - $1009
    MH71 has 16gb ram 750gb 7200RPM - $999

Besides that, they look the exact same? I have also heard there is a difference between screens (LG vs Samsung). Which has which?

It's probably random which screen you get. I'd get the 750G 7200RPM / 16G one.

The one with the 7200rpm hdd simply because that will be the bottleneck of the machine, the ram amount wont make a difference.

Hello guys! I am really interested to buy this notebook, but I am not feeling comfortable about the gpu's issues... I already know that I should keep the windows 8 for while, but can I update the gpu drivers safety? I talked with some guys and they told me that the driver installed on it is pretty old!

I really want to buy the n56jr from microcenter... my second choice is the y510p single gt755m. However the asus is waaay better.

    Thanks!

I say go for it and expriment early. If something winds up so messed up a system restore can't fix it just return it. MC is very good about <30 day returns.

Does anyone else have a touchpad thats really jumpy? I place 1 finger on it and my cursor won't stay in place... it fidgets in a small radius... Wondering if thats normal and whether its a hardware or software issue... My zoom in and outs are also a bit a hit or miss... can anyone recommend me a different driver other than the default one??

    edit-

ok i just found out its a Asus laptop problem... heres a link to a n76vj that has the same metallic casing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9CchuABklo
it seems that if its charging the touchpad is eratic... and its weird.. when i place my other hand on the case like the guy in the video, the cursor stops and functions normally, once I take it off, it speeds off to crazy mode.. any input on this guys?? This is driving me crazy!!!

This is usually an issue if you have a noisy third wire ground on the power socket you're plugging into. It happens in one of the sockets in my house but not any of the others. Sadly that one socket is in my bedroom. Laying my other hand, palm down, on the aluminum deck helps "calm the shakes" a bit.

I had that problem on my N56VZ-DS71 I bought about 20 months ago from J&R. The erratic cursor jumping was so bad I had to return it for another one. Still have the same problem though not as bad as my first laptop, been dealing with it ever since (pretty good at keeping one finger on the case now). It's not too noticeable since I use an external mouse most of the time. Disappointed to know it still exists on their new 2014 models.. try toying with the touch-pad sensitivity settings.

Interesting, I've never heard of this. I'll check it out and see if it makes a difference for me.

Oddly enough I could not enter the BIOS with F9 or F11 or any other key, I had to select the special restart option in win8 / 8.1 to enter the BIOS (or whatever its called now?)

unfortunately my windows was too unstable, so i did a new installation, here is what I’ve done:

-after changing boot on the Bios, i have installed W7 pro

-then let it install all driver he recognized alone, don't install nvidia driver let them to the end

-after that took the asus DVD it came with and go to software, and install the driver/software you want except nvidia one, they are all compatible .

-power off the computer and take off the battery, power it without battery, go again to the dvd > sowtware> display> nvidia and install the driver, it is not updated but it will work well.

you are done, the N56JR work properly with a fresh W7 install.

if you have any question i'm here :)

Wonder if taking out the battery is triggering something in Optimus and turning the dedicated GPU making it easier to install the drivers.

That is weird, must be, though the drivers really should pick up an inactive optimus GPU. Must be a weird bug.

I think the battery out trick its about the error 43 ( windows encounters an error and stop the card) doing that will force the PC to detect the nvidia card correctly

What seems to be the problem? Is it blocked in by the casing? If not, it's usually just one or two screws that hold it in place. Just pop off the two antenna connectors with your thumbnails, then unscrew the one or two screws holding the card in, and it should then kind of fold up away from the motherboard. Once the card is angled up as far as it goes easily, it should just slide right out.

unscrewing and taking off the atennas not a problem...taking the unscrew out is the issue where the casing seems to be blocking..

Hello folks. I was looking at 17.3" laptops and had zoned in on the N750JV-DB71-CA but the salesperson at my local Canada Computers asked why I was looking at a 17.3" laptop (most friends ask me the same question..lol). He pointed out that the 56JR 15.6" laptop has better/faster specs, costs less and is lighter, so after much thought I ended up picking up the N56JR-DS71-CA. Researching and asking friends, it seems not many people get 17.3" or larger laptops and since this is a desktop replacement+ I can just use my current lcd monitor or even a larger one in my bedroom.

Why did you chose a 15.6" laptop instead of a 17.3"?

    Anyhow, here are my questions.

    1) Windows 8. I liked Windows XP Pro on my desktop and I like my sisters laptop with Win 7 Home Premium.
Is it worth it to upgrade to windows 8.1 vs 8.0?
Can I use windows 8 for a few days/weeks before upgrading to windows 8.1 (following the instructions here of course).
Can I make windows 8/8.1 look similar to windows 7?
Do I upgrade to 8.1 and then follow the instructions here? (download and install driver while connected only to power without battery, de-activate and re-activate nvidia gpu. How do I know which driver to use on that asus link)?

    2) Unless I have issues with the wireless card, I shouldn't bother changing anything, correct?

    3) Is it possible to control the laptop in such a way that I can reduce power usage when just surfing or working on a resume? Can I disable the nVidia card to save power from time to time? Reduce cpu or bus Mhz?

    4) Can you run the main screen AND a vga monitor AND an HDMI display at the same time?
