    *******EDIT**********

The asus UL80VT is now released ~

    Go to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220602

    *****************************************

    Hey-

Isnt this laptop looking like the ultimate for people who want power + battery life? Cant wait for it.

Now, That said- Anyone have any info on when its shipping or how much it will cost?

Shipping date may be Oct 22 for win 7 release, but no idea on price. Read in another thread they though 1150$ but that seems way to high. You could get a new MBP for that price, which certainly outperforms this.

Id like to keep this thread specific to the UL80v. The only other model with switchable graphics is a 15.6 monster, and there is way more powerful laptops available in that size for less.

    Specs:
    • Intel CULV Core 2 Duo 1.3GHz processor ( Asus sw lets u overclock to 1.6? )
    • 4GB RAM ( DDR3? )
    • 500GB HDD (Too bad not a 128gb SSD)
    • 14-inch, 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit display
    • Switchable 512MB Nvidia GeForce 210M ( Whats the integrated card? a gma4500? )
    • DVD writer
    • 12 Hour battery life

Yes -- I'm *very* excited about this model, as it seems like the perfect balance of computing power and battery life.
    • The SU7300 or SU9400 should be more than powerful enough for most applications
    • The dedicated graphics can be turned on for video-intensive applications, and kept off the rest of the time to conserve battery
    • The computer is large enough to accomodate a DVD drive while not being unwieldy

The one thing that has tempered my excitement: I'm quite concerned with streaming HD video. I suspect that the SU7300 can handle it, but not 100% sure. The interesting news from last week: in 2010 Adobe will be releasing a new version of Flash that will support GPU acceleration, meaning the CPU won't be the one that's tasked with decoding. A demo showed a netbook with an Atom chip but with dedicated NVIDA ION graphics streaming Flash 1080p HD flawlessly. Coverage here.

I've been waiting for weeks for UL80V pricing and availability information to finally surface.

It seems that the SU9400 will not be available at launch, only the su7300.

I found a post on amazon saying the price is 850 US

I'm waiting too for all of these reasons, but price will be the deciding factor. If it goes past a certain point - especially where Asus laptops tend to come through ~£1:$1 then I'll just get me and my gf some other laptops, maybe even MB/MBPs

Well the Asus rep did not comment on the price, but I suspect the base version may come in around $799 MSRP. The UL50Ag is that price too.

I cannot wait either. I am broke now tho :(

Asus rep responded again. The model we want is actually the UL80vt

The T indicates it has "turbo" mode which lets the proc go 33% faster when mode is enabled.

The model on sale here in Malaysia has the following specs:

    UL80V-D130VHP2G320GDLS
    SU7300-1.3GHz
    14" HD SLIM (GL, LED)
    Vista Home Premium
    2GB Memory
    Nvidia Geforce G210M 512MB DDR3
    802.11 b/g/n + Bluetooth
    320G 5400 SATA
    0.3M Pixel
    8x Super Multi-Dual
    8 cells: 4400/5600 mAh

Going for RM2899, that's about US$830. I've been ogling it at the store for a week or so now. Had my sights set on a U80V before, but have been thinking of switching to this. I wish it had a backlit keyboard; but I think the slower cpu is more of an issue for me. But it's really gorgeous!

Wow I did not know the UL80 did not have a backlit keyboard. Why would they do that! That is one feature that was useful to me since I try to type at night with my book.

very nice i was under the impression that only the ul80vt would be equipped with the g210m and the ul80v would only have integrated graphics but I guess I am wrong! The only difference would be the turbo33 option no?

ya it would have been really nice to have a backlit keyboard but its not a total deal breaker for me. still wish i had purchased a u80v when i had the chance >.<

interesting. The 210m isnt the best card in the world, but its actually about 50% better than the 9400m's that go into MBP's.

Very cool- Making me glad I am waiting. Only thing left to do for this is put in a SSD and a bluetooth module.

graphics cards are integrated onto the motherboard, so a no on that. The processor can usually be upgraded although unless there is an access panel on the back, it will require a bit of disassembly.

Is the graphics card a 210m or a 120m. Different sites say different things. ?

I've only seen them with 210m. I don't recall ever seeing one with the 120m. Not to say you haven't yourself, but everything i've seen so far all have been the Nvidia Geforce 210m.

From what i've gathered, the UL50VT and the UL80VT are suppose to be the same price.

The only differences between them are:
    1. UL50VT has a 15.6 inch and screen and a 500gb hdd.
    2. UL80VT has a 14 inch screen and a 320gb hdd.

Since i'm not absolutely positive on this info we'll leave this question as hypothetical:
Which one would you pick and why?

Definitely the 14. 1366x768 is wayyy to small for a 15.6 screen.

I plan on putting a 32GB ssd in this anyways so HD means little.

U80v does have some good things about it, but i think UL80VT still wins out for me in my opinion and here's why.

    UL80VT:

    1. Has a new motherboard (Congo...I'm not entirely sure, but ill throw it out there. I like constructive criticism btw.)
    2. DDR3 Memory.
    3. New design...lighter and thinner
    4. Cheaper
    5. With the Turbo33 and also the switchable graphics...i love the idea. So much can be done with it, battery life being the most obvious. (I will note, it could be a disaster as well. I could see all kinds of problems with the Nvidia driver and software self-destructing.)
    6. Battery is bigger.

    http://event.asus.com/2009/nb/legal_disclaimer/

    U80V:

    1. Light up keyboard...(this feature just seems to pull you in... it could have just the illuminated keyboard and some flashing lights (barebones) and i'd still probably think it over for a few minutes.)
    2. Faster processor
    3. Graphics card
    4. Bluetooth

Let me know if these dont relate to the UL80VT findings but here are some tests i've found that has some PCMark05 scores.

    http://www.zdnet.com.au/reviews/hardware/laptops/soa/Asus-U80V/0,2000065761,339297553,00.htm
Note: This model does have 2GB of RAM...not sure how much 4 GB's would affect the results.

Not sure I buy that sites 3dmark scores. The Proc in the U80v is way better. You are talking a full fledged 2.53ghz mobile proc vs a CULV 1.3 - There is no contest, its more than double the performance.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html states that the SU7300 is the #157th most powerful proc. The P8700 is #33 - THats a pretty big difference

The video card is also better by a fair amount. The 4570 is a class 2 video card. The 210m is a class 3. Granted the difference between both cards isnt really that huge, the 4570 is still *better*.

The only remaining factors are RAM and battery life. Ram can be upgraded and 7 hours is fine with me. End result = U80 wayyyy better.

There is one other factor though. Price.

This U80v just went for ~1500AUD which is a far ways off from the expected 850USD for the UL80v

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170390408319&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:AU:1123

I do agree with you on the backlit keyboard. Such a awesome feature :D

haha me too had the same idea. wanted to get the u80v at rm3799 but decided to wait till win 7 comes out. now can't decide btw U80V and UL80V. I really like the idea if switchable graphics in UL80V.

do you know if the UL80V is coming with Win 7 version in malaysia after oct 22?

one more question. what is the integrated card in UL80V? Is it Intel 4500MHD? How do we switch btw the integrated card and nvidia G210M? Have to go thru' BIOS settings or just a switch to turn the nvidia card on?

Regarding the gpu performance of the 4570, I just bought an F81Se with a T4200 and the 4570 gpu, it scored 3300 in 3dmark 2006.

Also the F6Ve came with the 4570 so you might want to take a look at the review of that notebook, it would have similar performance.

    In graphics. yes.

In CPU Processing power, not even close. You are talking a weak CULV 1.3 ghz vs a full fledged 2.53

Its more than double the power.

I already found out UL80V comes with Nvidia G210M together with Intel GMA4500 MHD. There is a swith at the upper left corner to switch btw the two graphics.

If you read Chinese, here is a nice review. If you dn't, there are plenty of pics fot you to enjoy too! :)

The Turbo33 option does make this laptop look interesting.

Anandtech had a preview of the UL50VT in case anyone missed it. Performance should be similar to the UL80VT.
    http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3637&p=2

A Taiwanese blogger tested the UL80VT earlier and posted his results too:
    http://dispis.pixnet.net/blog/post/28152254

I did a rough translation of it in the UL30 thread, hopefully it'd provide some early hints of what the UL80VT is capable of. Can't wait until NBR gets their hands on one!

Just found a comparsion of the U80v to the MBP.

I cant believe this, but they are saying the MBP dominated the U80v in processor + graphics + Battery life.

How is that possible? Isnt the 4570 wayyy better than a 9600m? What gives?

    http://www.cnet.com.au/macbook-pro-vs-the-pc-competition_p5-240062502.htm

Also, They are saying a >3 hour battery life. ? I know this is the U model and not the UL, but asus rated it at 7 hours.

I dont understand how a computer with a better processor and a better graphics card scored less on both tests.

idk if you're confusing GPUs(maybe you're thinking of the HD4 670?), but the HD4570 is most definitely weaker than the 9600M GT. It's a decent GPU, but it will rank below the 9600M GT at higher resolutions and higher amount of graphics data.

That's what I am in between UL80 and U80. Does anyone know how bad CPU performance on UL80 (SU7300 or SU9400) for video converting or rendering? I will use this laptop for web browsing, DVD burning, Video converting or rendering and HD playback Canon H.263 video file.

So apparently the new U80v-B2 only gets the 2.1ghz proc, not the 2.53 -

So the only real advantage at this point is the backlit keyboard. Guess I will be getting the UL.

Do you guys think that the U80 backlit keyboards you can get on ebay can be hacked to work with the UL series? Im going to order one I think.

The UL80-vt with SU7300 will only achieve 1.733 GHz. With and SU9400 it could achieve 2.133 GHz. So if absolute CPU power is your decision then the older U80's are the way to go, unless a SU9400 version appears. At the same price point a UL80-VT with a SU9400 would be a no brainer over the U80-V.

I have the U81-A BB version and can state the T6500 cpu is way more than required for most usual tasks. With Windows 7 the casual CPU speed requirements drops even lower. Unless you are a real power monger, and 99% of the users out there are not, the SU7300 with turbo will definately suffice.

I am however surprised Asus isn't offering the backlit keyboard with these. While yes it can eat battery you can also turn it off! In reality I can't see why any upper end laptop isn't offering this feature. Especially with these offering such great battery life. I mean do they only expect us to use them durring daylight hours or well lit rooms? Look at their own video add, pulling the laptop from a glove box and then using it at night in the back seat of a car........

The Asus rep just responded again. The SSD model will only be on the 15 inch, not the 14 :(
