There's a side picture of the U1 on Asus's website, which shows the same side ports as that 1st picture in the previous post, ie. dialup, ethernet, and the little silver slider in the middle. Even the touchpad buttons look the same, as well as the silver accent around the laptop.

I think someone moved the F8 sign in front of the wrong laptop.

Yes, the U1 is about the size of a 8x11 piece of paper.

The one with the F8s sign is the U1f, I'm pretty sure. I can see the leather wristrests and the lack of swivel camera.

^^^^ good point it sure doesnt look like there is a 240 degree swivel camera in there. so that means we still dont have any pictures.

this is one hell of a notebook by the looks of the specs, and exactly what i have waiting the last 3 months for, im hoping its not to long till i can get one.

from what i can make out:
intel core 2 duo processors T7700/T7500/T7300/T7100
    genuine windows vista ultimate/business/home premium
    14.1” wxga+ color shine lcd
    ddr2 667mhz upto 4G
    sata …… 160GB/5400rpm
ati mobility radeon hd 2600.. 512mb ddr.. vram
    intel wireless wifi … agn
    34x24.4x3.72cm 2.49kg (6 cell battery)

... is what i couldnt make out.

ps im guessing because the 6 cell battery is in brackets that maybe there is an option for a larger capacity battery unlike the a8 range.

jumper76, thats gotta be a U1. There is no way in hell a girl that skinny can hold a 5.5lb laptop (estimated weight of the F8) with three fingers. And all the other reasons.
The F8 is in the right top corner of that pic. I fail to see how the ATI HD2600XT is made by nvidia  If it is an HD2600XT, I would posit that it is similar in performance to the 8600M GT.

Interesting sequence of events though. I really love the hinge design and the power button on the side. Its interesting that they have minimized the size of the bamboo hinge from the W3 days so that it no longer takes up the whole back side, and leaves room for a lot of ports.

Oh thats it definitely. the bottom pic.

The ports are the same as the a8. All thats different is the lid mechanism, a great improvement.

Well lets assume that an ati x2600 is better than a 8600 gt. It might not be actually, the a8js model might be more performance and this one might be something like the old w3j in comparison...

It does look quite a bit better than the a8, although the style is a bit overstated in my opinion. I like simplicity.

Well, the 8000 series is 90nm right? Since the ATI 2000 series are 65nm the reduction in power consumption/size/heat would allow a better card to be put in a smaller chassis (I'm assuming, not much of an expert here).

This is lighter than the A8 too. 2.4Kgs is only 5.2lbs, which is a 0.4lb reduction from the A8Jm/a/s/p.

So.. is this going to be showcased soon? If it is showcased does it mean there'll be some sort of a release date given too? Also someone previously mentioned it coming with a T7400... this IS a Santa Rosa model.. right? Shouldn't it then come with T7700/7500/7300?

Oh wow. Dreamy. Wonder how much this'll cost? Being an A8Js replacement, it should cost about the same, shouldn't it?

It doesn't say anything like 2600XT so it's probably safe to assume it's a 2600, and considering the difference in power between the 8600GS and the 8600GT, do you think the 2600XT and 2600 will be as significant? How much impact does the smaller manufacturing process actually have?

Hmmm I must say that I'm preety sure that this F8 is ideal laptop: 14"WXGA+ + DVI + camera + good GPU + W3 look. What more can I want? :D And the price should be lower than W3 (I guess 200-300) so I think I've just found perfect notebook :D And most of ports are on the back...sweeeet :D Any news about ETA? Summer? Fall?
    cheers

This source seems rather dubious as it states the 2600 as having 70% better 3dmark 06 scores vs. 20w total graphics power compared to the older 1600 (not sure how to interpret that). The windows experience index scores are great though (5.9 vs. 4.6 with the 1600). I'm going to bet on it being quite an improvement, especially with a smaller notebook where heat and power consumption are more of a problem.

    http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/in...sk=view&id=388&Itemid=31&limit=1&limitstart=9

"Finally, we reach ATI's latest performance pasts - First, the Mobility Radeon HD 2600, with a core clocked between 500 and 500MHz, and either a 64-bit or 128-bit memory bus clocked between 550MHz and 600MHz. At the top of the range is the Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT, with core clocks as high as 700MHz and memory clocked up to 750MHz. Both of these parts are again manufactured on 65 nanometre, with the same PowerPlay 7 and UVD support. These parts will be used in notebooks priced over US $1199 typically, and again availability should kick in come July."

that's a pretty big difference in core speed. 500 to ~700

the difference between the desktop versions of pro and XT is also very extreme so HD2600 might only be comparable to 8600 GS

That first pictuer with the sign really looks like the odd one out. It is black on the inside and looks edgy. The others look much more like the A8. Maybe the photographer just needed something to hold the sign up and used another laptop.

I think the laptop you see there on the right 80% cut off is the one that has the sign infront of it. Must have been misplaced because that looks like a Asus U5F but with a webcam?

The 8600M GT got 3800 in the G1s review so the differance is not that big. The HD2600 has more potential I think.

I've see a U1f in real life and it does look a lot like the notebook on the right (with F8 sign) . i remember being amazed at how thin the screen was, its maybe 5mm think. the only thing that doesnt quite look right is the hinge. i tough the U1 shared a similar hinge with the w3 (power buitton on the right hinge side).

whatever it is, its good news for Asus! truly stunning design

Manufacturer spec weights are generally done without battery or modular drive inserted - it's just the chassis weight. This is the likely explanation for the weight discrepancy being discussed. Asus has done this for a long time.

So annoying that they didn't release it together with all the other Santa Rosa's. I need my laptop at the end of this month so I'll probably have to go for the F3Sv :/ A small laptop would be nice for when I go to university next year, but I think I'll buy a nice Lenovo tablet at that time.

It really depends on the resolution the benchmarks where taken with, the difference between 1024x768 or 1280x1024 is a couple of hunderd points. I expect the site I posted did all benchmarks in the same resolution so that would mean the difference is about 20%. Of course, that's the XT version, might be this F8 has a much slower version installed....

The HD2600XT was tested in that 20" behemoth of an HP (the HDX), so it was probably overclocked...Anything in a smaller laptop would have to go with lower clocks....

If the performance is equivalent to the 8600M GS, they've just killed it, even before the announcement. Its not a bad card, but it simply does not meet the expectations of those anticipating it.

Even if the XT is at normal clock, it would be equivalent of the 8600M GT or better. I doubt an overclocked card would get boost the XT by that much.

Probably going to be $1700-$1800. The HD 2600 will definitely be better than the A8js' 7700.

I completely agree. It would be no better than the V2 IMO - good quality, small size but doesnt have the graphical oomph.

I REALLY hope theres a GT version or at least equivalent in performance. If Zepto can put a GT in a 14" why cant Asus!!!!

Ok, if they wana stick to ATI for the W3 replacement since the W3 had the x1600 then i kinda see why but surely surely surely the 8600GT would be far more appealing to the market? Look at the popularity of the G1 - its not just for the shiny lights!!!

If i can get T7300 + 2GB RAM + 8600GT in a W3 like laptop then ive found the perfect match. But if its GS performance then zepto it is.......
