Samsung has been pretty fair on their pricing, so this does sound like a winner. It is showing up at 1450 EUR on retail sites, which is far cheaper than the UX51VZ but also does not include a SSD. But, it comes with touch and a faster GPU.
We'll have to see what kinds of benchmarks the 8870M puts out, but I wouldn't get too bent out of shape with it yet. Notebookcheck estimates that it will have GTX 660M performance, which a conservatively overclocked 650M can beat. But if anyone wanted a standard hard disk, cheaper price, and touch screen has a new option! I'm curious to see what kind of 1080p screen they use.

Hi guys!
I live in Norway and is thinking about buying a U500VZ.
Here in Norway I see that I can buy two different models, but as far as I can see there is no difference in the specs.
- U500VZ-CM083H - Komplett.no (norwegian site)
- U500VZ-CN046H - Multicom.no (norwegian site)
Does anyone know the difference between these two? -

it packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU, a 300-nit, 1080p display, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, an optional touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, JBL speakers and 11 hours of battery life!!!

Some store shows a price of around 1250€

It's true it doesn't include SSD, but this means you can upgrade by yourself choosing the best SSD for your target, also CPU and GPU are more powerful than U500VZ.
It's true you can overclock GT650m, but you can overclock even AMD8870m, if I remember correctly on Envy 17 AMD7850m could be overclocked of 200MHz easily.
There are some points to investigate like quality display and cooling system...

Some German store shows already the price.
The only complain could be the weight of 3.16Kg, maybe it use a very large battery to have 11 hours of life time. -

instead of 380 x 254 x 20 mm and weight of 2.2Kg of the Asus, so Series 7 Chronos seems slightly smaller than U500VZ.
There are a total of 4 USB ports 2 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0.

Anyone in the US find a sleeve that fits well? I could only find the Cool Bananas one and the Be.ez ones on the German version of Amazon and not something available in the States.

I am pretty sure I am going to order a U500VZ now. But I also want to buy a docking station for this laptop. I need connect 2 screens with DVI cable to the docking station. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good docking station matching my needs that is good for the U500VZ?
And charger wise: there would be great if the docking station had a charger, so I didn't need to take up the charger from the bag and connect it every time I plugged the computer to the docking station. Can USB 3 dockings charge through usb port, or do I need to buy an extra charger? -

083H has touch screen and new CPU
-
Yes, that's what I just saw. So the touch screen version is confirmed to Norway February 6th
I think I will wait for the touch sceen version. Not because I think that I need touch screen, but hopefully I will have this computer for some years, and then maybe there is a lot more touch sceen based programs. -
Note that you'll also get a glossy layer on the screen with the touch version, from what I've heard. Just something to consider...

New info about new Samsung Chronos seems very impressive:

Hi Mac,
Regards
Dirk -
There is a thread to speak exclusively about Asus U500VZ/UX51VZ:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu.../695704-asus-u500vz-ux51vz-owners-lounge.html
My intention was to advise the customers of this kind of products that there is a new competitor.
A speculation thread about new Samsung Series 7 Chronos is already started:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/samsung/702308-introducing-new-series-7-chronos-amd-hd8870m.html -
I am now wondering which I will get... Asus u500vz or Samsung Series 7 Chronos. The specs between them are close, so I hope that people who know more about the hardware differences will speak up about them - where is the u500vz/ux51vz better than the Chronos, and where is the Chronos better than the Asus?
Although this forum is only a small sample, the issues that have been outlined here also make me wonder if the Samsung will be more consistent/reliable? -
But something tells me that its gonna cost, a lot. -
Unfortunately I don't trust Samsung enough to buy one of their laptops: they've always looked crappy to me, for style, specs and build quality. Now specs seem great on this new Chronos, but I think that they will hardly be able to keep it cool with heavy loads of work. Besides, I hope they don't decide to save money on the display in order to keep the price low as promised, since they have never used good panels in their laptops

"The results are in for RESCUECOM’s 2012 Q2 Computer Reliability Report; Samsung rises to the top, while Acer struggles!"
Rescuecom’s report includes all manufacturers with a market share of at least one percent and is a significant resource for PC purchasers as well as computer marketers and specialists.
The computer reliability report scores for 2012 Q2 are:
1. Samsung (422)
2. Lenovo/IBM (255)
3. Asus (159)
4. Apple (130)
5. Toshiba (117)
6. HP/Compaq (109)
7. Dell (79)
8. Sony (49)
9. Acer (28)
Computer Reliability Report 2012 Q2
About display: IMHO there are many chances that is the same of ASUS U500VZ, with these angles view it's enough sure that is a IPS or PLS, even Nits value is the same of Asus, in the market there very few 15.6" IPS display:
1) LG model used in ASUS U500VZ, Sony Vaio S15, HP Envy 15, HP Envy DV6. (orangegate display)
2) RGB IPS used in DELL Precison M4700 with 100% gamut coverage (but it's too expensive for this Samsung).
3) retina IPS used in rMBP,but the resolution doesn't correspond it.
4) IPS display used in HP ELITEBOOK with 100% gamut coverage (but it's too expensive for this Samsung).
So or this display is absolutely new, or it's enough sure that is LG model known for orangegate.
About cooling system: We have seen in the past year many laptop that have throttling issue, but almost all these were using NVIDIA GPU, it's pretty sure that AMD GPU are much better about this area.
At this moment cooling system seems the only sector that needs investigation, because Samsung is using the same CPU used in rMBP (with a TDP of 45W) and very powerful GPU, so some accurate review is required. -
We are they sold at..,touch version

Hey guys,
As this has escalated to a behemoth of a thread, could someone quickly sum up the problems that the U500 is troubled with? (and if they can be remedied.)
Thanks in advance for saving me and others many hours of reading and reading and reading. -
Sure, big companies sometimes cooperate and purchase one anothers products, but in this case it would be very strange because Samsung is competent enaugh to produce and use their own panel.
But Samsung could also save money and buy something that is cheap and already in the market, like LGs 15.6'' IPS panel. Who knows... we will se more info at CES next week. -
We're all curious to see some pics of the internal!

Asking in here aswell:
I just got an adapter from an ebay seller in the US. It was the wrong one and it wont fit, even though I gave them pictures and other info.
Is there anyone who can help me with this? I am contacting other resellers at the moment, and it seems that this adapter plug is a new one that is not used in other laptop models yet. Can anyone confirm this?
I havent been able to use my laptop for a week now waiting for this adapter, and now it's the wrong plug... bah.
Any help appreciated!
Edit:
Might aswell link the pictures of the plug also:

Is this a 5.5mm x 2.5mm adapter plug? -
I've posted this a couple times already.

It looks like asusparts.eu finally added UX51VZ as a model and they now list a charger available. I have emailed them asking if its the original adapter or not (I will probably order anyways if my swedish reseller does not have it, waiting for their reply). -
If anyone have one of these U500 and have played star wars the old republic i would love to know if its playable on this machine.?
Thanks in advance -
Hi guys, im just wondering with haswell coming out in a bout half a year, is it gonna make such a huge differnce on battery life that it will make a purchase of this machine seem rather stupid now? Just wondering if it is really worth waiting or if the impact of intels next gen of cpus will affect the tablet market more.
-
Joking aside I doubt the difference will be huge given that much power are consumed on other things than the processor such as screens, SSD storage, WLAN and memory. IMHO you should look at what battery life you require today and decide if the U500VZ/UX51VZ is good enough. It sure is for me -

Im sorry to drop in random but I've been saving up and looking for the Asus Zenbook U500vz because its the most powerful windows notebook that is still sexy (ultrabook) and in my budget that I have come across! There seems to be two versions of the same ultrabook:
One with 8gb ram and no touch screen (an older version)
And one with touch screen but 4gb ram (newer version)
The older version is available on any (Dutch) site but does not exist any more on the Asus site...
The newer version replaced the older version on the asus site but i cant find it anywhere else, neither in Holland or any where else...
Im wondering what to do, buy the older version because its still available now and has a nice 8gb ram?
Buy the older version when the newer version is released, hoping that the price of the older version will decrease?
Or wait for the newer version which might be more expensive, has a nice touch screen (very usefull with Windows 8) but gets a lesser 4gb ram?
The question is if the RAM is upgradable to 8 gb, the only info I can find is the notification on the Asus site which says: DIMM up to 4 G (???)
Please tell me what you think I should do, and could anyone tell me if the newer version has an 8gb ram option? -
I guess im waiting for a test from notebookcheck.com on the samsung chronos. If it really has 11 hours battery life its gonna be a hard choice, but ur right up there 5 is enough. The asus just looks so much better
-
Hi,
the fan start issue of notebookfan is solved. There is a new version. The software is now able to turn the fans completely off. AWSOME! The solution is to simulate a constant fake temperature to the ec. The spin up´s appeared if the Temperature in ec changed. The idea is to keep them constant.

For those of you looking for a new ac adpater for the UX51V, ( 90 Watt AC Adapter) ASUS estore finally has them up. Just in time, I ordered two bogus ones (minilaptopaccessories) that didn't work.

-
love the ux51vz but its not a big enough upgrade to change from my 13" ux32vd. Can't wait to see what they come up with for haswell.
-
So yesterday I decided to go back to version 203.
I was having trouble with the automatic light sensor not working anymore and seemingly worse battery life running 204.
To my surprise, first boot on 203 and the automatic backlight sensor is working as expected again. It will automatically raise the backlight to max again when shining with my LED of my phone flash, turns off keyboard lighting and everything. During dark situations, it also responds correctly again. It lowers the backlight to the settings set in Windows (I have both plugged in and battery always set to MAX and let the sensor regulate how bright it really becomes) and everything works as expected. So for me, 204 is broken for the backlight sensor and automatic backlight + keyboard lighting.
Also doing some battery tests, I'm back to windows reporting a 7h+ battery life and also batterybar rising it's expectations. I worked on it for 3 hours today and still had more then half of my battery left, on 204 I believe it would have been close to the end.
I can also conclusively confirm that the fan noise on 203 is definitively worse then running 204.
Has anyone done similar tests? Really wondering what your conclusions are. -
