I thought I would start this thread so people can start adding info as it comes out. I was also wondering if Asus has released any info as to when this laptop would be released? I'm interested in getting the 4k model with the 3080.

That's good. I'm also waiting for the S17 to launch in my country. Really looking forward to reviews and benchmarks for this one.

 

There are some early benchmarks and thermals. Tally Ho Tech isn't the greatest nor most rigorous channel but you can get an idea of the thermals on the new machine. I don't think he manually maxed out the fans, so take the early results with a grain of salt.

Yeah I have seen that, and although first impressions are pretty good, ambient temps in Tally Ho's testing environment are something I'm not aware of. As per the review, the S17 has no trouble handling 120+ W from the CPU alone, and can also manage both CPU and GPU in a combined load scenario with decent temps. But again, he showed similar results for the 2020 Scar 15, and praised a lot about how it runs really cool and stuff, but on other reviews the GPU was thermal throttling at 86C. So I guess we should wait for more reviews to come, just to be safe.

 

Are you talking about this review here for the Scar 15? I'm just curious.

His results do seem a bit off. Jarrod'sTech, ultrabookreviews and notebookcheck all show that model thermal throttling. It's possible he might have had a fan or AC on during the testing which is why his temperatures are comparatively better since it might have assisted in moving hotter air away from the laptop while simultaneously allowing it to draw in cooler air.

I will also post some benchmarks if I happen to get mine first before the reviewers. XD. I already preordered the 4k 3080 model. But you are right we should wait for more reliable and detailed benchmarks that include descriptions of the testing conditions.

Most likely the S17 will be fine thermally. There's 4 heatpipes running across the CPU and GPU with 3 heatpipes shared between the CPU and GPU. It also has separate heat pipes for the nand and vrms. With the extra airflow from the lifted keyboard it shouldn't have any issues cooling 45-50W on the CPU and 125-140W on the GPU during games. One could also apply liquid metal on the GPU for some marginal single digit improvements in thermals as well.

Here's an update. Laptop j11 has shown a Cinebench R23 run on the S17, seems to be doing great. Could easily run at higher power limits for longer, but stock behaviour drops it to 90W. Though I've asked him to boost the power limits further and try overclocking the CPU as well. Right now without max fans, it is doing like 80C at 90W which is nothing short of impressive. So there's a good amount of thermal headroom which can be utilised for more performance. This laptop makes a lot more sense than the overhyped Alienware X17 lol. Only gaming performance needs to be assessed after this.

 

For what it's worth, this thermal system is very similar to (and arguably better than) the Duo 15SE which has really impressed me in both thermals and acoustics.

Watch his latest video. He OCed it to 4.6 GHz, and that literally destroyed the 11700K lol, at just about 110W. Not to mention that he is also recording with OBS, and is using XTU instead of throttlestop, and we all know XTU eats up a tad more cpu resources than Throttlestop as well. He can get more out of it if he switches to camera recordings.

 

Laptop j11 uploaded a footage recently with his mobile camera without obs. The s17 manages a score of 15.6k in R23, running at 4.7 GHz.



@Papusan your prediction turned out to be true. Tiger Lake has the potential to literally annihilate the desktop rocket lake, provided there's an ample amount of thermal headroom. So far, the Zephyrus S17 seems to be a better choice than the Alienware X17 any day xD. (Although anything is better than Alienware's X series, lol).

 

He has uploaded yet another video. It broke the 6000 mark in Cinebench R20, and 2427 points in Cinebench R15. Its crazy power for a laptop, lol. I wonder if the S17 can sustain this wattage for long periods of time, but regardless this is the best result from a tiger lake laptop that we have seen so far.

 

I'd like to know more about the quality of the display with qhd resolution but haven't found a review that covers it. Having only 300 nits brightness seems underwhelming.

The QHD and 4k displays have 100% DCI-P3. This review said QHD, but it is actually the 4k model they were measuring. For the 4k display it is 500 nits. No information on the QHD yet regarding brightness.

Thermals are pretty damn good on this laptop. The version he is reviewing is the 3080(125W+15W dynamic boost) with the 4k panel. This particular sku has Optimus and does not have a mux switch. The 1440P version has a mux switch though.

 

Managed to get a good deal on the Alienware X17. If the Zephyrus S17 arrives before the return deadline for the X17 I will post some comparisons of the performance differences between the two. The X17 I managed to get for $3400. I will decide on which one to keep after some testing.

Hopefully, you saw the post on the Alienware X17 thread. User pitha1337 repasted his laptop with liquid metal and saw a significant drop in thermals.

With an ambient temp of 26-28C, they could sustain ~104W of power with temps not exceeding 86C. They did repeated runs so the heatsink was heatsoaked by then.

At this point I would say the thermal systems between the S17 and X17 are pretty comparable.

I incidentally did, problem is that I have zero experience on repasting the thermals of a gaming laptop, would I have to dismantle the whole thing?

 

Do not and I cannot stress strongly enough do not use liquid metal if you have never repasted a laptop before. Heck, even if you do have experience, I still don't recommend it because it's way too much of a pain to work with. Instead go for a high-quality standard thermal compound like Phobya Nanogrease or Gelid GC Extreme. While it may not perform as well in absolute terms as liquid metal, it is far easier to apply and does not require the same level of maintenance.

 

Absolutely, no way I will open and fiddle with an expensive laptop's inside when I have no experience, this is why I will probably go for the S17 as many are praising the stock thermal paste.

 

Yeah, if you don't plan on opening it up and repasting the X17 with liquid metal then the better option is the S17 in terms of performance.

That's a very nice score, I believe the previous model was rated 82%, a 90% is very solid even though it's funny he is not that all satisfied with the cooling system.

 

I see on GenTechPC's website it is still listed as pre-order. Anyone know when this is going to drop? I've ordered an X17 but I'm tempted by this unit now.

If you look in the manual mode tests, the Far Cry 5 benchmark shows

CPU max temp 96C with ~61W CPU power draw.
GPU max temp 84C with ~136W power draw.

Given these results it still seems that the Alienware X17 has the advantage thermally even before it's been repasted with liquid metal. Just a reminder that the stock paste on the Alienware 17 sucks.

At the moment my shortlist is down to two, Scar 733 or the Alienware X17, it's nice to read that even though it's not the best, the stock thermal of the X17 returns nice temperature results.

I see that all these benchmarks are with the 3080, does the 3070 run cooler or it makes things worse since the GPU is less powerful and the CPU will end up doing more work, getting hotter as a result?

 

I guess Ultrabookreview's Zephyrus S17 unit is not perfectly repasted. It should be clearly capable of doing more. It is currently doing 90W at 89C in Cinebench, and heck, even my Zephyrus S15 2020 with the same liquid metal and inferior cooling system used to do 90W at 85-87C on the CPU with ease in Cinebench.

 

The S17 they have is fine. When they just stress the CPU only running Cinebench while pulling ~90W it hits 87-88C. You can look at it in their benchmarks.

When you only stress test the CPU the temperatures are just fine, but when you start combining thermal loads on both the CPU+GPU you start seeing the limitations of the cooling solution. Asus did an admirable job with the S17, but it still has its limitations in combined workloads. That's most likely the reason why they limited the the GPU to only 125W+15W.

533/733 Users are dying to test it

 

Laptop j11 (now Red Gloves) seems to have the Zephyrus S17 with better QC, as far as thermals go. He was doing like 80C at 90W in solo cpu loads, also temps were cooler at 76C on the gpu in manual mode, room temps being 27C which is actually a worst case scenario. I'm guessing Ultrabookreview got a slightly below average unit in terms of the thermal paste application etc.

 

My S17 arrives this Wed so I am hoping its a good one?

I do not believe so no. You can undervolt it, but honestly I don't see a reason in these thin laptops to overclock, it would just thermal throttle lower than non oc.

 

Yup. You can. Head over to Asus Bios, look for the overclocking lock option, disable it. You'll now have XTU/throttlestop support to do anything with it, including a limited OC of upto 500 MHz.

Hey just got mine from GenTechPC, first of all i'm in love with the keyboard, this clicking noise

Quick benchmark (all ran on 1140p) :
- firestrike first run 10900 (i had adaptive sync on + Gsync... My mistake, first time i have a Gsync laptop)
- firestrike second run 11650 (turbo mode, -50mv undervolt, no OC on GPU)
- SSD is a constant 7000mb/s

I also live in Dubai, ambient temp around 25+

As of now the two most annoying thing is the fan kicking on and off for no reasons and stopping 2sec after ramping up (armory crate on perf mode) and i have some slight coil whine when i go from no load to strong load.

 

I love the keyboard also. Mine does not seem to have any coil whine? I have not ran mine in anything but turbo lol. Your score will be much better in Turbo and I like vivid for display.
Also be sure to go to your dolby sound and play with the settings, the speakers are pretty amazing once you adjust.

 

I'll have a look about Turbo a bit lost with all the sliders and the fan profile, can you share yours ?

The screen is crisp and smooth, the little bit of Call of Duty i've done in 1440p ultra was amazing, beat my ex Blade pro 17 easily.

Do you run with Gsync on for only fullscreen or fullscreen and windows ?

 

For me I leave turbo on. Undervolt -70 in bios. Screen set to Vivid, G-sync on fullscreen only. and sound on Game/Detailed.

I cancelled my new Blade as I can't give up this keyboard and the scroll wheel is so nice, plus temps are pretty good, 2hrs of Days gone on high settings, I max out at 91c cpu, 83 gpu. Those are my highest spike temps, I have not installed to see what temps I am averaging during gameplay yet?

 

Just for the keyboard even if the gaming perf were average i would not give it up haha! Honestly same, i play a lot of Warzone and on my blade after long session my finger were super hot and sweaty, with this one it's always cold

EDIT: i just had two freeze where the wifi go disconnect/like if no network device existed.. I think i'm going to switch the mediatek for an Intel card

Also my screen show as Generic PnP, even though all the updates has been made and installed Intel + Nvidia drivers
