Looks like the redesign places the wire closer to the body of the computer when plugged in. Should reduce torque on the socket, improving longevity of the socket and the charger pin.

What OS are you running in that photo?

I don't like conspiracy theories, but I wonder if Apple is still interfering in the production of Zenbooks like they were two years ago.

    http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120213PB201.html

Pegatron to give up Asustek ultrabook orders, says paper
Commercial Times, February 13; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 13 February 2012]

Pegatron Technology will give up OEM ultrabook orders from Asustek Computer due to pressure from Apple, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

Apple reportedly was unhappy about Pegatron's production of Asustek's Zenbook models, which are similar to its MacBook Air, especially in its outer design, and therefore, demand Pegatron make a choice, claimed the paper, which added that Pegatron began to assemble iPhones for Apple in 2011 and is eager to solicit orders for next-generation iPads from the vendor.

Pegatron's current production of Zenbooks will stop by the end of March at the earliest, and Asustek will be forced to outsource the Zenbooks either to Compal Electronics or Wistron, added the paper.

I'm running Xubuntu 14.04 with the Numix theme.

    ---

I'd imagine it's just Asus not "trying" too hard to keep the Zenbooks in stock. These expensive laptops never really sold too well. fwiw, the UX301LA and UX31LA are pretty easily obtainable in the US at the moment.

I want to think not, but that may well be a factor in the redesign of the 301/302, with the exterior Gorilla Glass, absence of any silver-colored finish, etc.

I'm inclined to agree. It's only certain configurations that are easy to find, though. The UX301LA-XH72T (2x 256GB SSD), for example, seems perpetually backordered.

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a laptop for the upcoming college school year and have taken an interest in ASUS's line of ultrabooks. I stumbled across this thread as the revamped UX31LA is one of my options for purchase. I was just wondering what you guys opinions are on the different ASUS laptops available and how they compare with each other.

    Between these possibilities:

ASUS UX31LA-US51T - Also wondering if the 10% student discount is still applicable since it seems there have been mixed results in this thread. I live in the LA area so visiting a physical store is an option versus the online store. ~899$ price tag would push me heavily towards this option.
Buy ASUS Zenbook Touch UX31LA-US51T Touchscreen Ultrabook - Microsoft Store

ASUS UX31A-DH71 - How's the Ivy Bridge i7 vs Haswell i5, 128 SSD vs 256 SSD. Not sure about the internal improvements from the this older version of the UX31 though if anyone could shed some light on the topic for a tech noobie.
Amazon.com: ASUS UX31A-DH71 13.3-Inch Zenbook (Silver Aluminum): Computers & Accessories

ASUS UX302LA-BHI5T08 - New Infinity series from ASUS but lacks a dedicated SSD. Not looking to replace internals if that's a factor.
Asus 13.3" TouchScreen Laptop Intel Core i5 4GB Memory 500GB HDD + 16GB Solid State Drive UX302LA-BHI5T08 - Best Buy

Also looking for any recommendations otherwise within the sub-1000$ range!

Thanks for any input and information.

    Distances,

I have looked at all these also and the Buy ASUS Zenbook Touch UX31LA-US51T Touchscreen Ultrabook - Microsoft Store
is the one I am going to get for my daughter for her first year at college.

Yes the 10% will work for this PC.

I looked at the 302la and was going to upgrade the memory and the HHD to an SSD but this is really ready to go as is for what she needs.

    No, that's an 80mm drive, and the UX31LA has a 60mm slot.

I'm considering this laptop, but the 128GB SSD drive is very limiting. What are the options for either adding another SSD drive, or replacing the current one? I'm a hardware noob - is this something I can do myself?

Also on a different note - are people generally happy with these units without any known specific problems. I ruled out a Dell due to a coil whine, while another ASUS I was interested in is said to have many problems with dropped Wifi. Hoping this laptop is going to run Windows 8.1 without problem (no driver issues etc) and stay fairly cool and, well, just work! :)

Yes you can change the SSD.
    No issues with WiFi
    No issues with Windows 8.1
    Cool yes.

    I'm all set.

Nope Norton does not recognize it as a network storage area.......

I don't know if its also available in other countries and where to get it.

    Hello,
I've got the same question .
After reading through the thread I want know whether the aforementioned sleep bug still exists or not?

In Germany this notebook can be purchased for 899€ and if you consider build quality ,battery life ,looks and the option to add in another ssd ,it is indeed unrivaled !
    (Yeah there's a touchscreen too)

    Thanks :)

    bought my daughters last week.
the only thing I hate is windows 8.1
    what a pain to learn......

I had to write a startup scripted to have remote shares connect on boot-up with out the Red X. This is a Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 issue......

Horitontal scrolling in a browser or generally ?
It seems most of what I've read is ironed out.

Is it possible to upload some pics ?
Like some with say light falling on the display.

Hello I've the german model UX31LA-C4081H. It's very nice and I like it. I've only a few small problems. I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro. Now i have the problem hat sometimes it installs an old version of the intel graphic chip driver itself and i have to reinstall the new one. And sometimes is has the Problem that is does not wake up after auto turn off the display. But i think is is related to the graphic driver. Also the graphic driver sometimes resets the option of disabling the power save option with display brightness.

But I like my UX31 event it has a little bit back light bleeding but I haven't seen one without it, some have more some less but also other ultrabooks with an IPS display have this problem. I can post some pics later. Soon I'll add a new 256 GB SSD. The Transcend MTS600 as i mentioned before. The battery life with about 5 to 6 hours is perfect in my opinion.
If you have any further questions feel free to ask me :)

This is the best laptop for the money.
There is nothing wrong with the one I bought for my daughter.
I have connected her to my remote NAS for free extra storage and backups.
I had to create a script that runs on startup to create the network mapping for the remote connection because Windows 7 and 8 tries to connect to networks before an internet connection is established and will fail.
My scripts create the mappings and connects after 30 seconds.....

    Hi Mark,

You do not like Windows 8.1 and I prefer Windows 8.1 !!!!!!
I have an Asus UX31A (4 Ram, 128SSD, 1920x1080 screen) with Windows 7 Home Premium.
I would like to instal Windows 8.1 in my Asus UX31A, but it is a lot of trouble doing it from a clean install. I have an unused valid 8.1 activation key.
I have the 2 Restore DVD created by the Asus AI restore utility for Windows 7 home premium.
I can post them to you and you can boot from them and install Windows 7 to your Asus UX31A.
It will install perfectly but because the activation keys are stored in the bios it will not activate, so you will have to find a valid key to activate Windows 7 in your Asus UX31A.

I would like to install Windows 8.1 so I am asking you if you have already made the 2 DVS using ASus AI Restore Utility in your Asus UX31A.
If you have can we exchange DVD s ?????
I can send you mine and you can send me yours.

By the way if any other forum member is prepared to help me obtain the 2 DVD s with Windows 8.1 hey can contact me in ny way they think is easy.

    Regards from Sunny Athens Greece

The UH51T actually doesn't have the HD 5000. IIRC, the Canadian Microsoft Store site had an incorrect listing. Some of the posters here own the UH51T, and it has the HD 4400.

I've been a lifelong Thinkpad user, but for a change, I'm not buying the T440s. I'm considering buying UX31-LA primarily because my original choice XPS 13 has this terrible "cpu whine" problem. So, my question to guys is:

    (1) Are there any such known/noticeable issues with this laptop?
    (2) Did anyone extend their warranty beyond the standard 1 year? Asus website does have any pricing info. For example, Lenovo charges ~$100 for each additional year of warranty, upto max of 4 years
