Direct console can overclock any CPU you can fet working in the G50, I believe.

ive been watching this one an the x1 at bestbuy and know little about asus
Ive read all 900 postings on these laptops and key questions arent answered i need to know please
1- how long does battery last on saver mode for internet surfin email myspace youtube?
A-how long does it last playing world of warcraft?
2- any benchmarks for world of warcraft?
3- how about 3d render programs like maya or poser or carrerra?
4- whats general fps in wow?
5-how hot does it get it will be on my lap and on desktop for the most part 7 hours a day and do i need to get a cooling fan then? -
Howdy, i own this laptop and have had asus notebooks before.
1 about 1.5 hours
A About 45 min on battery...
2 At max settings i get 60+ FPS in most of the world, in somewhere like Nax 45+, in a major city with hundreds of people i drop down into the 20s-30s
3 No idea....
4 50-60
5 Not overly hot, but you always want to keep a gaming notebook on a table. -
what about on your lap? i might have it on my lap on a lap cooler fan for like 3-6 hours whether im gaming with electric or just internet surfing/broadcasting
-
if its on battery it wont last long. All gaming laptops get hot, its how it is. g50 not as hot as many so you can get away with it. The good news is it pulls its cold air in from the back and front, not the bottem so it can sit on your lap and probably be fine.

-
Plus, the x5 has a 9cell battery, so you should be able to get more than users with an X1
-
im torn now between the g50vt-x5 and the dv7-1262 at staples depending which goes on sale first and is cheaper
-
If you are going for games, clearly the asus is far better.
-
yea that i know but also cant find how it handles 3d renders and stuff will the processor be good for like poser and carrerra if i do 3d animated renders (like shrek) altho not right away probably not for a few months down the line beforehand will internet video blogging on youtube and ustream of music and video and worlkd of warcraft and neverwinter nights but im curious alot of games show vista but not vista64 so concerned if it will run in compatibility mode with just vista or dumb it down to xp service pack 2
-
Periods! PERIODS!
Anyway, Vista 64 works well with most 32 bit programs, it's only 16 bit programs that offer a problem, and even then they can sometimes be fixed.
If you plan on serious gaming anywhere down the line, get the Asus.
If those programs are processor intensive, then you might want to go with the HP. However, the Asus has built in overclocking for the processor that should help mitigate this. -
the only programs thats processor intensive might be the 3d programs poser 7 or carrara of course when i run those i would be surfing internet as well and with the asus when im on battery ill be just internet surfing or video blogging and battery should be fine for that ive looked at the X1 and it seems strong as well and heard batteries are interchangable between x5 and x1 is this true?
-
Anyone want to make an image of their recovery partition? It got deleted when I was trying to install ultimate 32, and now there are a crap-ton of errors all over the place on boot...
tech support says send it off for at least 3 weeks...no thanks, but it would be nice to have my express gate operational again. -
-
All G50 series batteries work on all G50's. -
I bought the x5 last week and I'm not too great with vista at all. Sure the sounds and smoothness of the windows is nice but I feel as if the laptop is held back alot. My alienware m9700 had xp sp 3 and it would start up and come in and out of hibernation so fast and that processor was a turion 2.4 single core. Any one use xp on a G50 yet?
-
-
hey I Might Buy this, im mostly going to end up surfing playing music video blog streaming video and playing world of warcraft and some single player games and light 3d rendering. C
an i use this on my lap and eventually get a usb fan cooler to cool it down and if so which on at bestbuy since this pulls in cold air from sides and back and laptop fans blow from bottom?
Hows asus support if it breaks? im used to hp tech chat support and havent had a issue in over 5 yrs yet on my desktop
anyone post benchmarks on world of warcraft for dalaran battlegrounds 25 man raids solo? on my desktop i get 7-18 fps.
Also is there a bigger battery available?
Also ive tried using direct console in best buy and it only lets me change the text section it doesnt let me try to turn off the cover lights any ideas? -
I read the bad reviews on Best Buy...and they all mention crashes and blue screen of death. Anyone know the cause? I'm thinking about buying this used from someone.
-
Bad reviews!
BB costumers have it rated 4.6 out of 5 stars, yeah your always going to have some customers with problems and issues but that happens with any new product.
Overall I'm pretty sure most people that get this laptop really like it, and what's not to like, it offers great performance for your $$$. -

A bsod isnt the end of the world and we are talking about windows here. -
My dad had windows ME on the family computer many many years ago (A hewlett packard if I remember right) It would be a very rare occasion not to get the BSOD a few times a day.

thanks... i found someone that wants to sell his ASUS G50VT-X5 for $600
-
Most of the Best Buy reviews are 4-5 stars, with only a few 1-2 stars. Those people got lemons, and no matter what company or what model it is, some laptops will be lemons.

Okay. Here is a question, I am thinking about buying the X5, because it`s a great bang for buck deal, the question is should I just go for it, or should I wait it out until August-September?
Do you guys think that by then the X5 will be outdated or have a price drop, or do you guys think that by that time newer and better notebooks will be on the market for around the same price as the X5?
Thanks in advance.
(Sorry for my crappy english) -

Unless you have the money for one of the nicer G50Vt's like the B1 or the X6 then really the G50Vt's dont get outdated within their own line, only against what else is on the market.
I love myne, but I also realize that a couple of years from now I will probably be playing the latest and greatest on low if using a res within the 1280x720 range. I wanted something that could play current games and own all my old games as well as give me a chance to play some games i didnt have the power to play in the past. For me it does that.
If you can get past the gateway name the FX series does sport some slightly more powerful units for no more than the better end of the G50V series costs. Really unless your on a 1200 dollar budget there isnt much on the market new like the X5. In the 1200 dollar range your choices get broader and new units are around all the time. -
I KNOW that right NOW the X5 is the best choice.
The question I am asking is, do you think that from now to August-September the prices will drop, or if a better line of laptops are coming out(don`t have to be ASUS) for around the same price.
I think that during Q2 the Montevina Plus is coming out,how long will it take to get companys to start using the new line of CPUs, plus I read a great post here on the forums about how in 2009 a whole new line of CPUs I forget the name right now are coming out, but all in all the question is:
Do you think that from now to August-September the prices will drop, or ir a better line of laptops are coming out(don`t have to be ASUS) for around the same price, and how much longer do you really think the X5 has before you need to upgrade? -
Of course something new is coming out next week, next month, next quarter, next year, next blah blah blah. If you are waiting for the perfect computer, phone, hdtv that future proof it's never gonna happen because 2 months later something bigger, better, faster and sometimes cheaper will be staring you in the face. It's the nature of electronics so get what you want and be happy with it for a few years!
Eg:
2 years ago I bought a gateway mt6451 for 799.00 at bb with a turion tl-50 1.6ghz, integrated graphics, pata hdd 5200 rpm, 1gb of memory and vista home basic.
Yesterday I bought an ASUS x5 for 899.00 with a c2d 2.13 ghz oc'd to 2.4, dedicated geforce 9800 gs, sata 7200 rpm hdd, 4gb of memory and 64 bit vista.
What a difference 2 years and 100 bucks make. -

The X5's price is unlikley to drop any further., thought you might see a slight drop in the other models. As a gamer I would say the X5 would need to be replaced after 2 years in order to keep playing all the latest games, though the current gen of games have already reached to where the X5 cant play them on native res any better than high. I personally hope to use it for 3 years before I start looking to replace, but it serves much larger purposes then gaming and as a computer I could easily keep this 5 years.
David recently posted (I know doesn't have to be asus) some magazine shots of whats coming up for asus and so far they dont show anything in the G50 range or direct replacement.
I was recently shopping (in the past month) before I picked this up. Dell offers nothing int he price range with a gpu nearly as good as this one. The 1330 starts out with an X3100 and gets a 8400M by the time it reaches 1300 bucks, the XPS 17 started with a 6700M i believe. HP doesnt currently offer anything beyond the 130M and in the under 1,000 "gamer" range such as the DV4T Special Edition which i believe has the 9600M GT.
MSI would be something to check up on as i didnt check them out, but as i said keep an eye on the gateway FX they go on sale all the time seen a few adds from best buy this year already.
Its hard for me to predict the trends since im moving from desktop hardware to laptop and havent followed the laptop market beyond the last 2 years. Im sure someone will comment soon though. -
Thanks alot both of you.
You knocked some sense into me. -
anytime man, anytime. hope you get something that makes ya happy because that's all that counts.
-
Just got mine! Hey there ClutchX2. Do you think you can help me overclock mine too?
-
Just an FYI for those that might not know. If this has been covered before apologies, I did do a search. The stock G50VT-X5 does not have the PhysX engine enabled. If you go into your NVIDIA CP settings there should be a Set PhysX Configurations option under 3D Settings, if not you have to upgrade your driver then install the PhysX System Software to get it working. Everyone always told me never to install the stock graphic drivers from NVIDIA, or any graphics card manufacturer, because they had to come from your Laptop OEM. With my old Dell they were right not with my new ASUS
. I installed the latest drivers for the 9800M GS, PhysX System Software and.....
NVIDIA 9800m GS Vista 64bit 185.85
NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.09.0408 -
Has anyone tried bumping up the memory from 4gb. Also I reflashed my gpu bios and now it says its a gt with dox 185.68 drivers? Shouldn't it say gts
-
No it should read gt. Mine also reads the same...on xp, win 7 and vista
-
Mine reads GS.

Hello, i own a G50vt-x5 and i'm so happy about it. but i really need an answer from the experts. Can i upgrade my CPU? if yes, then what is the highest possible number i can upgrade it to. Next is the GPU. Can i upgrade the GPU? if yes, can i do at least 1gb? i would really appreciate all the answers and i'm ready to accept it if you guys would say "NO u cant upgrade" haha thanks again!
P.S Im really serious about upgrading my laptop. please serious answers only. thanks! -
CPU yes, any socket P CPU will be compatible with this laptop, go as high as you can spend/afford without feeling guilty.
X9100 will work but but not sure how it would handle the extra heat.(45W)
T series will work great (35W)
P series would be ideal (25W) has the best of both worlds uses less power but offers the same performance as comparable T series. -
It handles the x9100 heat pretty good as long as you keep it at 3.06ghz. Once you start to go up on the clock you will need a cooler or do what I did and drill a nice hole where the fan meets the bottom panel.
-
-
Yea a pretty big chunk. My stock cpu was a p7xxx series at 2.1 stock and 2.39ghz at a stable overclock. My x9100 at stock 3.06ghz increased performance a noticeable amount but once I pushed it to 3.4ghz it is amazing. Using 3dmark06 as a comparison, I jumped from 9,200 to 10,100-10,300. Tested on an external monitor at 1280x768
It is a beast of a cpu, as long as you can tame the heat well lmao -
