Any socket CPU is technically upgradeable. However on ASUS laptops a "warranty-void" sticker is placed on a CPU heatsink screw. Therefore by removing the heatsink (which is obviously needed in order to upgrade the CPU) you void the warranty.

Now, ASUS are often lenient and will look the other way when doing warranty work, even if the heatsink has been removed (or CPU upgraded), ASSUMING that it is not that removal (or CPU upgrade) that is causing the problem for which warranty was requested. But that's by no means a guarantee that they will be lenient in your case. So you should proceed with caution, and only upgrade your CPU if you are sure you are willing to possibly give up your warranty for that.

Your X-5 comes with a 9800M GS GPU which is more powerful than a 130M GPU, so don't even worry about that

I was thinking about buying one of these refurbished from tigerdirect.com, but I had a few questions.

Is the G50VT-X5 better or worse than the Asus G50VT-X1, since both of them are the same price at the website. Is either model prone to problems?

Is this laptop portable enough for college. I plan on taking it to classes and so forth.

Do you guys recommend this over the MSI EX625? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152108 Both are the same price, but the Asus would be refurbished and the MSI would be new.

Also, I was wondering if anyone put a skin on their g50vt, since I am not a big fan of the lid design.

    Thanks

i think the msi is better cause it has blutooth built in compared to g50vt. numberwise, the msi is a little bit better, screen size larger, but im not the pro so just saying the differences lol! ( which are quite obvious) i guess im not helping.

I will take the G50's graphics card over blue tooth any days, especially since i dont use it and its a cheap upgrade too.

X5 in comparison, X5 has slightly better cpu, better battery, better graphics card, operating system is 64 bit can actually use all 4gb of ram unlike the msi's 32 bit vista.

I'll update with sites that have original accessories and such.

Thinking about buying either the x1 or x5. From the screenshots I think I could handle the flashy lid designs, but are there any laptop skins for these models in case I get the notebook and suddenly find it much worse than I had imagined? If not, are there any reliable ways to paint it?

To be honest you spend so much time on the otherside of the lid someone could paint it pink you would ventually forget about that side, until you looked at it again.

Never found anyone who carried fit for G50V skins though you can just get a custom sized skin for it.

Bought one of these yesterday and returned it the same day. The keyboard lag or touch pad sensitivity (yes, I applied/tested all workarounds listed on NBR) was just too much to deal with as I wanted this machine to double as a development machine. Maybe it's just my hands or the placement of my hands but I either had the lag or I was hitting the touch pad with the palm of my hand. Either way, pretty bummed as I liked the machine from a performance perspective.

How accurate are the store availability checkers on BestBuy.com for this? Before I left for a trip out of the country 4 weeks ago the store checker showed just about every Best Buy near had it in stock. I came back this week and see none of the 10 Best Buys in my vicinity have them in stock anymore according to the website.

Did they really sell through that many this fast or did they just stop tracking store inventory on their website? I'm rather hesitant to buy a refurbed comp and that seems to be all that's available of the X5 online outside of eBay.

Not accurate at all. I was potentially interested in three laptops at my local BB; all were listed as out of stock on the website. When I arrived at the store they had 1-many of each model; the prices were not accurate either. The G50 was listed on BB.com at $899 I believe, when I arrived at the store the price was $799. I cannot say you will have the same experience but this is what I experienced.

Ha, well, I think my main reason for getting a skin would be to lessen the amount of attention the notebook would draw. It's not exactly subtle. I'll try looking for custom-fit skins though, thanks. Do you have any places you would recommend for custom skins?

Well after reading through all 37 pages here and reviews off of CNET Im gonna buy the G50vt-x5, Im not as hardcore of a gamer as I used to be, Im restoring a Morgan 34 foot sailboat so that eats some of my time and alot of my money lol. I really like the looks of the x1, but only see it for sale used at tigerdirect, and for only a 100 dollars less then the x5 with only a 90 day manuf warranty i would pay the 100 bucks more for the year warranty.

I was wondering cause Im not seeing it but is 4 gigs the max ram this babey can take?

I play EQ and WOW, I was wondering if i could copy the folder from my old desktop and just drop it into my program files folder... anyone know if that would work? otherwise I have alot of hours of patching lol.

    thanks

WoW you can copy the folder I am unsure on EQ. Wish I knew about that before I left the comp on all night to DL it via Battle.net and spend the next day DLing patch after patch along with all my mods from Curse. >.<

My wife has an X1 I tried WoW on last week as I waited on a laptop cooler for my Dell and I was impressed. All settings except shadows were High and at no time did game play get choppy in Uld 25. I should try again with shadows maxed not sure why I did not. I had fun checking the CPU and RAM usage while I played. IIRC RAM was mid 60% and I saw CPU go up near 90% on fights with a lot of spell effects like Hodir.

Yup, there coming out with a new model so the old X5's are not being restocked. Bought mine last nite, was the last one they had. I had to argue with the idiots tried telling me it was "optimized" and I had to pay extra for that. I told the store manager that that might work for your stupid customers but I do tech support for a living and Im not paying 39.99 for some idiot to go to microsoft.com and download some drivers. When I copied over EQ and tried to load it got the message that I needed to install direct x9...so much for a gameing laptop being optimized lol.

This puppy is wide. I bought a swiss army backpack for a 16inch laptop screen and I need to return it cause I can barely zipper it closed and its not offering much protection when the zippers are against the laptop.

This geek squad guy tried to sell me optimized computer, create discs and warned me of all the bad things that could happen to my laptop if i don't do all the suggested check list. He continued to pressure me and advised me how he was a certified technician and all the things he could do that NORMAL people could not....finally couldn't help but to tell him good for you, at work I have 3 computers and 7 LCD in front of me and got a whole server room beside me...think I can handle a few discs. lol....it's fun watching them harass people that gave in to their pressure.

The G50 series has a larger than usual chassis dimensions for its 15.4-6" class screen, confirmed by direct and specs measurements when they were first released - folks have had to look at 17" cases to get a good fit.

How suited is this laptop for college students?

I need to replace my old notebook, and I've been thinking the x5 is a relatively cheap replacement while also adding some computing power. My old laptop was a 15.4", but only around 5 pounds. Will the weight increase really matter that much? I wouldn't think it should be too much of a problem, but I'm also worried it may be too large to comfortably used in the cramped seats of a lecture hall.

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

One thing for a student to consider is battery life, which is pretty bad on an ASUS gaming notebook such as this.

Thats a lie ebe and you know it. X5 has the 9 cell which gets a good 2.5 hours out of average use on the stock CPU. 3 hours can be stretched out of it and an hour of gaming is also possible.

6 cell models with T series processors are a bit horrid.

If you are just going to use it during class you could deactivate a few things in the laptop, turn to battery saving and lower the screen brightness that should give more battery time, i can pull out of this machine about 3:45-4:00, surfing the net or writting something, if you just left it with the screen turned on dowloading something you will get about 4:20, or just get another 9cell battery as a replacement in case you run of off power in the middle of the class.

I wasnt gonna say anything but even with one low power hdd, no optical, all the led lines removed, battery mode on low brightness, processor undervolted to .900, locked to the SuperLFM 800mhz cpu mode, no wireless card doing nothing but idling windows your still NOT going to get 4 hours.

At the minimum draw rate to operate the computer it just cant happen, dont forget you should include booting up not everyone is just gonna pull the plug out the back this takes minutes away from usage! Also note that depending on the setup the laptop may shut down at 10% but doesnt have to.

When a 9-cell battery cost 170+ USD (gentechpc), I think I will try to save a little more to go with a EEE when I enter university. My parents bought me this G50Vt for my coming university (after this summer, I will be a 12th grade student). But I think when I pass university entrance exam, nothing is limited :D. Maybe I ask for 170 USD and then put my own 250 USD more for an EEE (hope its price will drop then).

Well Ive had my X5 for about a week now and Im happy with it. Last night I decided to check the battery and left it unplugged. Figures it had a patch it was downloading and installing and had to restart it twice... once it was back up I launched EverQuest and was able to play on the battery saving mode for 2 hours before I got the 15% battery life left message and plugged it in. For a desktop replacement/gamers laptop Im ok with this. If I bought the dc adaptor, I could be ultrageek and drag out my portable jumpbox for jumpstarting a car, it has a cigarette lighter port, and plug it in...Im sure that would get me a few more hours lol. All in all I think its a decent machine.

You can flash it from a GS to a GTS card, which will increse performance, but it's not really upgrading.
