I got this laptop a few days ago and the GPU is idling at 71-73 degrees Celsius right now...should I be worried?

Also, if I am going to use this laptop to take notes in university, how long do you guys think the battery life will be?

Battery life should be around 2 hours.

GPU idling temperatures are way too high. What is your ambient temp? What are the temps after a cold boot?

    Thanks for the reply!

Um, the GPU temps seems to be lower now, ranging from 57 - 60 degrees Celsius. I think after playing some games yesterday the temps stayed in the low 70s range. I don't know why.

For the battery life, its 2 hours of continuous typing right?

Battery-life wise, probably yeah. That is with the brightness turned down too...

I suppose your new GPU idle temps are better. After gaming they should be warmer than normal. Next time you boot up after it has been off for a night, check the temps. They should be in the low 50s

Would it be at all possible to upgrade the 9800M GS to a GTX 260M?

I have another question. What would be the best upgrade for this laptop from the following (I can only do one currently):

    - G.Skill Falcon 64GB SSD
    - Intel X9100 @3.06GHz

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The X9100 would be my choice. You can get one of those for cheap on eBay.

While the CPU would be a very good upgrade, you won't see that much performance increase unless you do video encoding or something like that (or just want really high synthetic benchmarks).

With a SSD, the computer should just feel alot faster overall. It won't give you much gaming performance increase but outside of it, you should definitely notice a big difference.

Hmm the temps seem to be OK right now. I'm idling at 52 degrees right now.

Now I have another problem...im using Windows 7 x64 and right now when I plug in my AC adaptor the battery indicator says "Plugged in, not charging" even though the battery is at 95% charge. How do I fix this problem?

Ummm, i've heard about a battery calibration that consist in just fully emptying the battery and recharge it up. Because, Windows is showing fully charged but at <100%.

Run your laptop on battery until the battery is showing 5%, then reboot and go in bios and leave it there until it shutdown. BTW, press F2 at the ROG boom intro to go in bios.

Thanks for your help, but the battery indicator somehow fixed itself when I unplugged the AC adaptor from the outlet and then replugged it. :)

Are you looking at the G50vt because of budget reasons, or because you like the specs better?

If for budget reasons, then the G50vt is probably the best deal you can get for that money.

The tray is just for storage...the card reader is below that. (at least on the G51)
