anybody know how the hybrid sleep works? what would be the best way to conserve power when i'm away from the comp?
-
-
What do you mean by hybrid sleep? You mean like hibernation? I'm actually not sure how you turn it on in Vista, though XP had it so I'd think Vista would somewhere or other.
-
no not hibernation, i'm talking about this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-hybrid-sleep-mode/
-
Oh, okay. I don't have that, I probably don't have some driver installed or something. (I just have normal sleep, which I've never really used.)
-
lol are you sure, cuz my x5 came pre-equipped with it. thats the reason that hibernate is not enabled, thats a combination of sleep and hibernate
-
I did a clean install and am using very few Asus specific drivers.
-
Got mine today, patched it all up, didnt remove much, but did disable all the taskbar icons. Running like a champ. Already miss my dell front volume controls, but oh well. It performs better than my old Vostro. Getting 40-50 fps in Dalaran WoW instead of 25-35 before.
Loving it so far, although I do miss my intel wifi signal meter on the taskbar, this wireless console 2 only is on or off. Checked my network settings and there is no option to enable the radio signal meter. I saw it initially, but now its gone? Windows wifi knocked it out maybe? -
oh and are you using the nvidia provided drivers, or the ones from laptop2go? i cant get those drivers to work it says its incompatible -
Will be picking up an N80 this week and I am curious to know two things;
1. How is the keyboard for typing/gaming.
2. Is the T9550 worth it and if so how badly will my battery suffer.
Cheers. -
(Actually the regular drivers will install too with little effort, but there's no need to given that they have official drivers now.)
And hibernating and all that is a Windows feature, but may not work with drivers controlling...some hardware that it needs to work. I imagine that's what's happening with mine, but I don't know what driver I'm missing. (And don't really care, since I just shut it down when I take it home.)
That CPU is a 2.6GHz/6MB/1066MHz Penryn x2? If so battery life should be a bit worse. What do you want it for? I really doubt it's worth it. You shouldn't be able to tell a difference for most things, and probably at best the difference would be <20%. I'd save the money towards a future laptop personally. -
Hi guyz..
Ive been following the conversation about the n80vn-x5 very closely during the last few weeks and yesterday ive decided i want to buy it. My question is: do you think the price will drop when the n81 will be widely available? (i.e. at newegg or best buy)? -
I'd also imagine the 81's coming at a $100+ premium.
Also when you look at the specs the only change is the renamed 9650GT video card. Not worth waiting for IMO. -
Yeah, we don't know exactly what the 120m is. The 130 has its processors clocked at 1400 supposedly, but the 9650 is already clocked at 1350.
Alternatively, I don't want it with ATi video, even if they include a higher end part (why not include a 9700GTS if they want to include a higher end part? Or ship it with DDR3 video RAM for that matter?) -
The N81s will also have a 16 : 9 aspect ratio which may be good for some but bad for others. I suspect the GT 120m will have GDDR3 to match that present in the Radeon 4650...and to at least be better than the current line up. Unfortunately there isn't even an obviously wrong ETA on the N80VG. I'd guess there wouldn't be any major price drop as many of the either old or lower end Asus models are still more expensive than the N80
-
Need some opinion...
I've been reading this thread and waiting for a sale or rebate on this laptop.
Meanwhile I saw the L50Vn-A1 on sale, about the same price as N80Vn-X5.
The only differences are 2.26GHz speed and 5400RPM Hard Drive (compare to N80: 2.4GHz and 7200RPM).
I need the laptop mainly for video editing, not gaming at all.
One more thing: some parts are leather. Is it something to avoid?
I just thought it might look nice today, but not in the next few years... just like leather jackets. -
No one's tried replacing the DVD drive with a Blu Ray drive yet?
Regarding that L50...is it cheaper? Looks like the screen is slightly larger, but does it have normal florecent lighting?
I haven't searched real carefully, but I'd love it if it had internal Blu Ray as apparently one model does, but wouldn't want the florescent lighting, and if it costs more for slightly worse hardware... -
Should I concern about the leather getting bad? -
PRO's
Very fast for the price, love 14" 1280x800
thumb scanner and webcam can be used to log into Vista
CON's
vent is on the right side and blows heat on my mouse hand?!
WHY put it on the right side?
No front volume controls like Dell
No latch for the lid, it just has a stiff mechanism
Fan is LOUD
touchpad is crap, disabled using bluetooth mouse
outer shell is finger print magnet -
This laptop has fantastic cooling-blows away every other laptop I've used so far-that's why the vent is where it is, and the fan is as loud as it is (though I don't think it's very loud-quieter than my desktop or game systems).
I wouldn't want media controls on the front (and Dell doesn't have them there on there newer laptops anyway).
Most laptops don't have latches-that design went away quite a while ago, as they can break, and don't serve much purpose in a modern design.
And finally, what's wrong with the trackpad? I don't like trackpads half as well as mice, but it works fine. -
Oh, and I know no one seems to have tried putting a Blu Ray drive in here...so I may be the first
I *think* that slot loading Sony/NEC Opteric drive will work, though the drive won't line up neatly with the outer case...I guess the drive will be recessed from the top of the case. -
OMG I hate the scanner... but nice to have you never know ( I said OMG lol)
It's not summer yet and i love how my computer can keep my hand warm on the porch. never had a computer that can do that.
took for ever to find a laptop with all the ports on the side. hate front ports and as a added plus finally most on back.
don't you hate it when you half to use 2 hands to open your screen? or how people stick clips on there cause the screen just swings with the wind?
I love how i almost never hear this thing...so maybe you got a bad fan?
evil driver yep yep uninstall it...easy...great touch pad with windows driver.
umm....why did you buy a glossy laptop? -
My only issue with the drive on their site is I have to authorize it every single time Windows boots. The check box to always allow it doesn't work (but then it's also not saving my passwords).
-
the ASUS N81Vp-C1 is out on newegg. i noticed it has the ddr3, not gddr3, graphics card. which is better the 4650 or the gddr2 9650gt in the n80???
-
-
for those of you still interested in this. newegg changed the price back down to 999. not a bad deal at all.
-
Does anyone have any idea at least what month the N81VG will be released? The only real upside is I've read it can have up to 4 hours of battery life. -
for me it is this or the u80
-
Dang, that's cheaper than I got mine for. Not too shabby.
Still on the fence about spending $300 for an internal Blu Ray drive that may or may not fit... -
-
i got the n80vn-x5 from newegg a week ago. Should have waited until now, they dropped the price by $50!
Anyways, my laptop worked fine until today when i was transferring a whole bunch of files from my old laptop to this one.
The battery died somewhere in the middle and the laptop shutdown. So i plugged in the battery and after that the laptop would just not stop. It would just go in a hang, even in safe more.
So I read the manual and re-loaded the factory image from the recovery disk. It took a long time to do this, and somewhere in between it asked me to enter the driver disk which I did.
Finally, vista started, but the look and feel is very different. most of the drivers were not installed and MS Office is missing completely.
So I am witing on the phone now to talk to asus customer support.
In the meantime, I loading all the drivers from the driver disk (because i cant even connect to the internet right now...very bare minimal).
Hopefully loading the drivers should solve the problems.
Here are some Qs for those who have had the X5 for some time.
- there 2 Recovery CDs. Are they both the same? It did not ask me to load the CD2 anytime during the re-load of factory image.
- Did anyone else have this problem where u had to re-load the factory image?
- I have been reading on the threads to dowload the latestNvidea drivers. Can someone send a link for this (Wolfpup?)? Any problems encountered after loading the drivers?
- what's the best anti-virus/spy/worm/.... out there in the market?
I used to use the Avira Antivir on my earlier laptop along with spybot. but they both are big time memory hogs.

I was just thinking about ordering an internal Blu Ray drive from Newegg, which is $300, and which for sure won't fit perfectly, and for all I know might not fit at all. I had tried a $110 Lite On external drive, but it was defective, and I just didn't want to risk a second one.
If nothing else, I'd run Memtest on it overnight to rule out memory problems.
I don't know what that second disc is. Nobody's used it...I was thrown off by that when I did a clean install, as I thought it must really be asking for that second disc, but it wasn't.
I haven't had any problems with them at all, and I can't remember anyone else having issues either. They go on smoothly, just like you'd expect for a desktop system.
This may be a direct link:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista64_179.48_beta.html
(They work just fine for Blu Ray too)
AVG is popular too (and another one I can't think of right now), but the license agreement on the newest one was little weird, so I've never tried it (a lot of people were switching away from it because of the wording on the current version, I guess). Probably fine though too.
I used to use Symantec's corporate edition, because my work has a license for employees personal stuff too, but Endpoint 11 that we updated to was TERRIBLE. Gets into everything, mucks up networking in some cases, horrible resource hog, can't disable components you don't need, etc. Absolutely hated it, which is why I switched to Avira. -
http://estore.asus.com
Look up the N80. Blu-ray drive is listed. -
-
You could always reuse the bezel from the old drive, or is that not the case?
-
It would depend on how the new drive was built, I guess. Plus I can't actually figure out how to get it off-dosn't seem to be an obvious way.
I *think* that $300 Sony drive would fit, but it would be recessed, like the top of the laptop would sort of hang out over it...I don't know :-/ -
thanks wolfpup for your response.
When I did a clean install, it asked me for the driver CDE, i inserted it and yet after it said that the instal was done, the drivers were not loaded. So I inserted the drver CD again and loaded the drivers, that fixed the problem and my laptop has been running fine since then.
Now I am noticing the keyboard lag that everyone has been talking about!! and it does get a bit annoying! there are several answers here to solve that, seems like. Some say to install the new version of BIOS. Where do I get that from?
Others have said to uninstall synaptec and that fixes it and some others have said that does not solve it completely....
any sure resolutions on fixing the keyboard lag problem?
the asus security manager is annoying. it keeps popping up everytime i am logging in somewhere I guess I just have to take the time to uninstall the stuff that I dont want.
Otherwise so far I happy with the laptop. Works great, pretty fast. Am yet to try out anything fancy. I am not into gaming.
Oh yes, battery performance is a little bit disappointing! I get amax of 2 hr and 15 minutes at Battery saving option. Any tricks to improving battery life?
bhavana -
dang i get about 2 playing games off and and and if i get really bored I've lasted 3hr surfing this site....
-
bhawnagesota: the most sure resolution is indeed removing the touchpad driver.
Definitely take the time to remove the unneeded applications. That will improve the performance of your computer and diminish the possibility of bugs. -
Is there a different touchpad driver I should be using? I installed that driver after a clean install, and it works, except it's annoying because it gives me two prompts EVERY TIME I start Windows. I have to okay both parts of the driver EVERY TIME, which is annoying.
Otherwise I like it, because it lets me turn off the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in, and keep separate settings for the mouse and trackpad, which are both great features.
I don't THINK I notice keyboard lag, though I *hate* laptop keyboards and mostly am using an external, so I don't know for sure. -
If the prompts are UAC: Can't you modify the properties of those driver files so that they always run with admin privileges?
-
Good idea, but they're actually not UAC prompts, just normal...well the same type of thing XP did. It doesn't remember that I check to always allow it to run (also doesn't remember some of my Windows networking passwords, or my Exchange account password for some reason :-/ )

Hello, I am new and I have found this discussion very helpful. I plan on buying this laptop, but I have a question I hope someone can answer.
Some people complained about this being heavy on the newegg reviews, but the weight is listed as 5.7 pounds. Does this weight seem accurate to people who have the computer? I would not buy this computer if it was much heavier as my computer now is 5.7 pounds, and I would not be able to lug a heavier one around.
Thanks! -
I've never weighed it, but it doesn't seem heavy for its size to me.
-
I hear some weird clicking noise from under the keyboard, it is not loud but I can hear it in a silent room. Is anyone else having the same issue ? Is it something to worry about ?
-
Sorry, forgot to mention that I got the laptop only a couple of days ago, haven't used it much yet.
-
Is it the normal hard drive seeking noise? The only normal clicks coming from it would be from the hard drive, and the only other moving part would be the fan/s, which I think don't normally click.
-
The noise is coming when nothing is running on the computer, so I am not sure if it is hard drive seeking noise or something else from the hard drive.
-
Does it seem to correspond with the hard drive indicator light? Is it loud? I mean hard drives click a lot, but it's really hard to say what it might be without hearing it.
-
Yes, it does. The left most light on the top flashes whenever I hear the sound.
-
Hi,
Does anyone have any idea about why the webcam light stays on even when not in use ?
newegg is selling a new N80Vn-X5
