The A8j has DVI-D, s-video, and vga out; all the bases are covered

Not sure if anyone answered my question or maybe I just forgot, but is the ETA for the W7J in August?

oh man...waiting till the summer for the A8Jm is going to be painful..
that is one sweet laptop -
Regarding the V1J - do you guys think the performance will be a big jump from a similarly-configured Z70Va (2.0GHz, 1G ram, ATI x700)? Is the wait and the (probably substantial) price difference justifiable?

Considering the V1J will most likely not come with a 2.0 yonah, it will prolly come with a 1.86ghz, and an X1600, with 1 gb (2x 512mb @667mhz), 100gb @5400 rpm. with these specs, i am sure it will cost roughly $1900 USD.
Remember this is speculations, so for roughly 150$ more you get dual core, and X1600 which is 35% better than the X700. Plus you get Fingerprint reader and webcam, plus a brand new chasis that could be thinner and lighter than the Z70va and may have better build quality.
All assumptions tho.
Thanks,

In addition to all the goodies pointed out by MG, the V1J has a docking station option.
-
Hm, yeah. I am currently looking for a laptop, but I am willing to wait for something exceptional. Centrino Duo, x1600, and the new gadgets are all great, but I hope Asus won't charge an extra leg for them. If, as you say, the price will be 1900-2000, I think the wait is worth it; if 2000+, I do not think it will be as great of a deal, as those specs are currently available for that price and comparable quality.
In any case, thanks for the response (and the pics), I guess we will be able to judge better as the info trickles down from shady sources.

ok to compare fairly.
Acer 8204 = $2100-2400 USD (depends where you buy it)
LG P1 = $2300-2400 CAD (roughly $2100 USD)
LG S1 = $2700 CAD (roughly $2300 USD)
Macbook Pro = $2400-2500 USD (rebates and discounts in some places)
Samsung X60 Studentbook Edition = 1600 Euros (not available in North America)
ASUS W3J = Pre-Order Price $1900 USD
Now considering all of this, and the fact that ASUS wants to keep thier units running cool, by putting in a 1.6 or a 1.8ghz Yonah, and etc that i said above. The fact that the screen is bigger also brings down the costs. We know the smaller the screen the more epxensive.
All of this can lead to the V1J's price of $2000-2100 USD which is conservative, possibly a more realistic price for all this nice stuff, would be $2300-2400 USD on the dot.
hehe, even at that price it may be worth it, considering it's build quality, thin and light, offers great features, and good performance, cool running, and good looks.
That's my 2 cents.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
That is true, I guess I was underestimating the other prices.
W3J is 1900ish (2050CAD for me), and it is a 14". It does have almost identical specs as the V1J, does it not? ATI x1600, 100Gb 5400, 1Gb RAM, DVDRW. Assuming the processor will be the same, and with a larger screen, the price should be very close, should it not? This is my first time researching a laptop, so I don't know how these things work out historically, or if they are even predictable. But if this is indeed the case, I will be very impressed.
Dammit, ignorance IS bliss! Should have bought an HP and never found this forum. Now I gotta wait and research and wait more, hehe. Ah well, it's all worth it in the end I suppose.
Again, thanks for the quick and useful posts MG. -
I guess there is also a difference in chassis quality that could make up for the price ? iirc "someone" mentioned it being between v6ja and w2v in price..so wouldn't that drive the price more towards the 2.3k spectrum ? (i hope im' wrong!)

yup assuming the V1J comes with exact same specs.. possibly faster ram 667mhz compared to the W3J with 533mhz ram, then you gotta add the webcam and fingerprint reader, your prolly looking at $2150 USD, also the screen would make a difference in price.
If the Screen is Matte and WSXGA+ the price might be lower
If the screen is Glossy and WXGA then the price might be higher
If the screen is Glossy and WSXGA+ (rare) then the price will be alot higher
If the screen has IPS (which i doubt) you will havta add + 100$.
So that would definately be a factor.
Thanks,

I thought the W3J was coming with DDR2 667mhz ram at 1GB? Has something changed or was that a mistake on Mystic's part?
Also, Justin, in your models update, you have all the ram listed as 677 not 667MHz...just thought I'd point that out, unless someone else already has? -

When you consider the price of the V1j, you should look at the $2,500 configuration for the MacBook Pro...... As I've said before, it is basically the twin brother of the V1j and the 1.83ghz / 1gb 667 / 120gb 5400rpm / 256mb x1600 / 1.3mp webcame / 15.4" WSXGA spec of the $2,500 MacBook is basically what should be expected for the V1j. Now, the V1j is going to add a fingerprint scanner (sweet), the option for some new docking solution and regardless of Apple's always high prices.... anything under $2,500 should be a good price for the V1j with that configuration..... I think $2,100 is a good estimate, only because Asus is going to want it between the W3j/V6j and the W2j..... so $1,900 - $2,600... so $2,250 might actually end up being the target for this model after all is said and done.
Honestly, the V1j will probably be my next laptop of any significant timeframe unless there is a really nice docking solution for the Origami platform model... I know we're talking 7" screen instead of 15.4" - but my day, honestly, fits the target user of "Origami" more than anything else.... if I can dock it - I honestly may just go to using a media center at home and maybe a V1 at the office...
I don't know.. sorry for going off on that tangent but at least the first paragraph had some good thoughts in it. -

You forgot to clearify the RAM spec coming in the W3J?
-
In the Netherlands the standard version of the W3J comes with 1x 512MB DDR2 553. The situation for the US market might differ, but I expect it to be the same.
-
What about the V1J versus the Z96J - both have same screen/video/etc specs, only real difference being the chassis (as far as I know). Would the price be almost the same for a V1J and a Z96J with the same specs? Why would Asus release two laptops with so little differences? Obviously one is an Ensemble and the other is barebone, so here might be a difference in quality (and webcam and blahblah), but this is still a weird marketing decision. Unless of course, there are differences that we do not know about yet.
And the F3J has very similar specs.
Someone feel free to tell me to STFU and just wait for all of them to come out before comparing them ;-) -
Haven't been able to find the Z96J, however I found out that it will come with a 128mb x1600 instead of 256mb. I suppose there will be a different screen (and resolution) on it as well.

anyone else have any more A8J pics?

oooh .. nice seeing it side by side with (what i presume is a) w3j . thanks!

ah, seems like it is slightly wider and taller. if Canada is getting both the A8 and W3.. does that mean the A8 will be a built on?
-
Right now, it's an ENSEMBLE unit, but until its released, who knows. It won't be out til a month after the W3j, so by May, we'll see what Fremont tells Taiwan.

I'm pretty sure they don't. They don't even accept credit cards yet heh.
-
Ncix.com would probably have it, and they do ship to the U.S. (I bought a Ferrari 4002 from them half year ago).

Yeap, but if the Z8jm is barebones, they will only ship barebones.

The major problem is what to provide now, I meant what specs, ensemble or whitebox, still under negotiation.
The Taiwan notebook PM was pretty firm on putting it to ensemble side, but Asus USA thinks it should be white box, because it is not as pretty as W3J and Z62F is not powerful enough, but the Taiwan PM didn't think so. Therefore USA PM asked me to talk to the Taiwan PM, he said the Taiwan PM should trust customer's opinion easier. Later that day, we had a six hour tour to NAPA valley in California, on the way and during the meal, I spent more than an hour on this topic, to gave him many different reasons to put it to the white box side. He actually quite agreed with me on all my reasons, that was why I think we have good chance to have a white box A8J.
My major reasons listed to him includes:
1. Almost all studets are big gamers;
2. 15.4" kind of too big to carry around for studends;
3. Z62J not powerful enough for games, makes students compromise to a 15.4" powerful models which they don't really like the size or push them to other brand names with 14" powerful models;
4. Students comunicate with each other alot, one buyer can bring a group of buyers, so we must have models students like;
5. Students don't care about OS because they can get it cheap from schools, they want to spent the money on other specs, like HD, memory.
6. Because of reason #5, the flexibility becomes very important, we need the white box to do it;
7. Most students buy the laptop before the school starts, they don't care about the price, because the parents will pay, the students will like very high specs whitebox, as long as no heating issue;
8. Asus always uses every possible chance on the market, has more than 200 models on motherboard side, we should also have every segment on notebook side and leave no spot for competitors.
Do I have any reason missed?
I also questioned if there is enough time left to provide this model right following W3J, he said no problem at all, once the detail confirmed, Asus can make couple of thousands A8J in one day easily. -
reason 5 is a definite. My school gives out free OS and anti virus to students. Plus if it was an ensemble..wouldn't it be directly competing against the W3J? similar specs and size.. too much overlap -
That's about it
-
omg. a whitebox A8Jm would absolutely rock. That way i dont have to buy it totally stacked up with options. I can downgrade and get cheaper parts from other sources..
-
am I the only one that wants an A8F? You guys can have your 7600 and the battery hit and heat that comes with it. I just want a cool running, light weight 14" wide screen.

I just can't believe my eyes!
A8J - Whitebox !!! All my dreams come truth! .... I don't know , it's just too good to be truth. Maybe they will decide do make it in black color? -

can someone comfirm that the A8J will be available as a whitebox?
and if so would the go7600 w/ 512Mb be one of the options? or will they shaft us by making the whitebox have the go7300 TC? -
Again, the A8jm won't be here for a few more months, as of now, its ENSEMBLE, but a few dealers and people at Fremont have been trying to tell ASUS Taiwan how much better it would be for it to be, a barebone unit.
However, nothing is confirmed, as of now, wishful thinking -
