According to sunny, you can get an hour and a half on the G51 with regular usage. Now, just use your imagination for the battery life while gaming.

You can buy a 9 cell G50 battery and use it in a G51 however.

dude Its like your taking it personal!!! do you work for Asus? why defend them? on any pc component you have a heatsink over it has to be flush and in contact with center core or chip or whatever you want to call it as well as cover the whole square area, and the thicker the copper like in a PC system the more heat it absorbs and then transfers to the heatpipies to the exhaust or fins with a fan blowing on it, so what your saying is if i had a for example 8800gt nvidia card in my pc with a passive cooler meaning no fan at all heatsink with heatpipes transfering heat to pipes to cooling fins that a thinner peice of copper would do better than a thicker piece? wrong... the thicker it is the more it absorbs it from the core and sends it along the pipes to the fins, the thinner it is the less heat absorbed meaning the heat is still sticking around the core and main area of the thin copper..

FOR EVERYONES information im not dissing on this awesome new laptop!!!! im saying no laptop or pc for that matter would have a gpu running normall at 99-100c for devil may cry 4 for first 10 minutes of gameplay!!! especially when the dam cutoff is 105c for throttleing down. Either the cooler aint doing its job or the dam thermostat for gpu is badly placed or reading it wrong becuz u would think the laptop would be BSOD like crazy and getting the famous NVKDL errors or locking up, freezing, crashing, rebooting, or checkerboarding.. it hasnt done any of that but i havent tried anything for more than 10 minutes on it..

that is why i emailed asus with the hard facts and evidence us 3 are having with this g51 laptop on the boards...

P.S. Clutch!!!! your gpu in your laptop is a g94 core.. meaning smaller, less power useage! it does not take 75 watts and the main core chip is smaller than the mobile gtx 260m chip!(which is an older g92b core made before the g94 was ever invented) so why would asus use the same exact cooler on the asus g50 on the asus g51 with a bigger gpu core chip that takes full 75watts of power or more compared to the smaller g94 core that the heatsink fits better on and takes what 20-40watts

    I agree!
If all 3 G51's are having heat issues it's not bad luck just bad execution on ASUS part.
Was 100% sure this was my next laptop purchase but with high temps posted has me second guessing myself. Will look at the G71 to see if it has the same issues, but damn man I really wanted the backlit keyboard, chiclet style keys and smaller frame but if the G71 has no heat issues the Black color will more than make up for it :D
Maybe a BIOS update can fix it
    @ Quadzilla don't you have a W90? What happened?

As far as this heatsink works passively, it works actually. Idle temps with no fan are pretty normal, though load temps take about 4 times longer to return to normal after the load is off. The heat alone actually creates air flow. The heat causes the air to expand and move the molecules away from the fins, just like a high pressure current into a low pressure zone.

The temperature sensor is a diode in the core sandwich and should be reading fine. While we know the card uses more power, note that since ASUS down clocked it they might have undervolted it as well have you dumped your bios and check yet? My GS stock actually had a higher voltage than the GS normally has, that exostensa's card had.

And its funny that someone would email info to asus on a laptop thats not even released. Not only that where did you send it, unless a teir one pot head decides to hand deliver this somewhere itll never go beyond tech support anyhow. The engineers dont even work in the same city much less the same building and as dumb as they can be, they did goto college for what they are doing. They are given constraints, money is one of them, and told to design this.

I know myne is a G94M core, the point is YOUR CORE, Your NOT visible in that picture core thermal interface is not showing in that picture its covered by the HSF its completely covered. You have some illusion that the MSI heatsink actually touches the silver edging on the chip.

It does not - http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7592/img1302v.jpg NOTE the huge bump that clearly doesnt touch anywhere but the core thermal interface! From the thread YOU linked us to.

Oh my, seems like the g71 will have a similar problem?
I am guessing that the P8700 on the $1149.99 g71 unit is adding more heat?

In this case, my dreams are forever ruined.

Id also like to add that even at 110C the 9800M didnt bsod, shut off anything but downclock, so why do u expect this between 95-100C?

Don't be so sure it will have the same problem, bigger chassis means better airflow, if you are unsure just wait, I'm sure members will do full testing once the are released into the wild. :D

dude I dont get you, your starting to get on my nerves, what person would pay 1000 dollars for a brand new laptop wether it was suppose to go on sale last week or this week or next week and not call asus to let them know there is an issue with their first batch of products, if none of us ever did that they wouldnt make driver updates, bios updates, firmware updates, do you think asus quality control caught every issue and fixed it before rushing a new product out? look at nvidia.... they still releasing drivers left and right that dont fix stuff just cause more issues. At least people let them know the money they spent isnt worth stuff that doesnt work correctly..

its like your jealous or something, of what I dont know. its a new laptop want one? do what i did call a best buy in your state ask them to locate one of the new laptops for you, they check stock status and can locate what store has one, then you drive your butt to the store and buy it, and then when you get it home you complain to asus warranty service that a first batch product is not working correctly because i dont know of any company who would say" Yeah 90-100c for 10 minutes of gaming is normal everyone should know that" thats some bull crap!!

I am trying to come up with ideas and results for those of the members here and new members that will be purchasing one of these things in the next couple of weeks, what are you going to say when 30 g51 laptops get up to 90c to 100c, still gonna be jealous then? be happy with your G50!! also just another pointer to get personal, if your going to sell yours so you can one day be a g51 or g71 owner, STOP TAKING IT APART you can already tell in your screenshots of your gpu board in your g50 the screw holes are getting worn out and stripped from you taking it apart and putting it back together so many times.. COME ON!!!

I'd like to add that despite the actual copper heat sink touching the GPU core, there is less copper in the entire G50/G51 cooling assembly than say the NP8660. Given that the fans are identical, more copper = more surface area = more efficient cooling. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sager unit w/ the 260M ran cooler than the G51.

That said the Sager probably has double, copper fins got to be an extra 20% right there.

As far as the copper on the gpu, if no other parts of the gpu needed cooling u would have a tiny square not a big one covering the whole card. The gpu interface would look a bit like the one on the cpu.

When they were drafting this product the first thing an engineer probably said was "The GPU is going to run 10 degrees hotter", and then the question after that is "How big of a problem is it", if they thought less than 10% would fail it would be more successful than the XBOX 360!

I looked around myne today they have like 10 cages scattered didnt see anything, saw a crapload of hp's and toshiba's. Am I jealous of your temperatures.... or wait are you jealous of Celvo's? I did type on a sony for awhile to check out the chiclet, its fine no real pros or cons to me. It reminds me of those kid computers though, im not sure why i think the sound?

ASUS actually has a forum that would create a more established, more public record of it in front of them, though your doing it here which is good just less in front, ASUS lacks an official prescence they should come on down like alienware.

Calling tech support is like telling a car dealer that all of this model has an issue, the manufacturer will never hear about it. The way the flow of info works when only a couple of people are talking is: Several units go in for warranty, individual cases noted and repairs are attempted based on current methods. When the warranty manager compiles problem data it then moves onto a higher department. If alot of people are calling or emailing about it, it moves a bit quicker then that. I knew that a particular company was going to have all of their transponder keys fail for a particular model year and I was told by a manager, so what do you expect me to tell them? Company later caught it after a couple hundred warranty issues.

For the record nVidia's driver development team is its own seperate group, companies do that and when the people designing things dont work with those supporting things, guess what happens?

Correct me if I am wrong but alot of people said it was going to run hotter before we even knew anything beyond specs?

I leave the bottom permanently off. The GPU pipe has been off twice, now whats stripped? You do know one of those pics was not myne and of a 200 series? Outside of the one screw on the bottom panel that has a smaller head then the others (near the fan). I dont see any screw or thread damage anywhere.

I only made one mention of selling it, I could sell it right now if i wanted to but since refurbs go for 728 the laptops not worth a dime over 700 since its not covered by warranty. Im keeping it lol.

Yeah. What happens in about 5 months down the road, when dusts starts getting into that one fan? Temps will rise. Maybe to a point where things do start shutting off. I mean, it'd still be under warranty and I'd get a new one, but that just ain't right. I haven't seen any shut-down temps on the 9800M GTX/GTX 260M, but I doubt they are much higher than 105C.

If it was clocked at stock clocks, I'd be done and get my camping gear out to grab the first one. But, in the end, they have a poorly designed cooling system that requires the card to be slower to operate correctly. That is just wrong. I'd still be worried about the temperatures, but at least it had the right clocks.

I don't want to pass on this, but the only reason I turned to this notebook was for the GPU.

Here's hopes that they do something different for the G60.

    ~Ibrahim~

P.S. Never heard anything about this having higher than normal temps. What is the real difference between the 9800M GTX and the GTX 260M?

The BIOS on the 9800M GS is set to 105C like alot of cards, I have personally hit 110C and watched it downclock and lower to 106C. It never made an attempt to shut off. Dunno about the GTX.

Ah, sorry, right. Should've stated throttling temperatures....bringing a underclocked card even lower.

I'm so angry I can't even express it in words. They were so close. SO CLOSE. I mean, I knew fitting a GTX 260M in a 15" chassis (heat-wise) would've been hard, but I didn't expect them to just give up and underclock it.

If this is the temperature with a 2GHz C2D.....hopes that I'm completely wrong and the Newegg models will, out of nowhere, run cooler and have the right clocks.

The 260mGTX with the correct clocks via nvidia specs runs perfect on the Clevo/sager 8662 and its in a 15inch chasis and its pretty crammed in there :) . i dont think 15inches has anything to do with it honestly i just think it was poor planing on Asus's part. I had the W90 and it had many issues, the sad part is after all these months it still has issues for people getting brand new machines. Maybe Asus is slipping abit i dunno. Ill still be grabbing the G71 come friday , i really wanted the G51 though for the reasons everyone else does but i dont want to wait months for it to get sorted out .

Well the 8662 was designed with the 260M right, it wasnt an update model? Im asking I noticed the M860 and 865 have the 260M. I think the real problem (outside of copper) is ASUS reused tooling from the G50 to save money.

A redesigned chassis would help the cooling as much as anything.

The 8660/2 was designed originally for the 9800gt then they dropped that down to a 9800gts , current owners of the original model(non quadcore capable) can buy the 260mGTX and toss it right in there with out any issues what so ever. Someone already put a 280mGTX in there 8662 and it still does not get as hot as the G51. Something just is not right with however they slapped this thing together .

dude you dont get it do you? do you work for geek squad at best buy? NO GPU should be running so hot, not in a laptop, not in a PC.. who the hell buys a $1,000.00 laptop with the greatest gpu you can get for that cheap, and wants it to run at 100C degrees brand spankin new out of the box then down the road when it is filled with dirt and crap or on a hot summer day inside or outside it overheats and shuts down or "THROTTLES DOWN" the whole point of getting a better gpu in a good deal with a laptop is to have the power and speed of that gpu, if I personally wanted a throttled down gpu i would stick with the 9600M gt in my hp that gets up to 80c and never over after using it for hours on end.

For your information I never said I called tech support, I e-mailed them the eaxct problem with proof and evidence of the facts and proof gpus should not run that hot out of the box, and if they cant come up with there level 1 support to fix it it will be forwarded up the chain of command until they come up with a solid fix. especially if they get negative reviews online on the internet and on msg forums with over 100 pages. IF I knew the gpu was going to get that hot specifically before running out and hunting this thing down, i wouldnt have bought it. everything else is great about this awesome laptop, the only issues is heat, and heat kills all electronics sooner or later, and a gpu that runs 90-100c out of the box will be dead if i were to run it 24/7 within the next 90 days

What person in their right mind would leave the bottom of their notebook taken apart and run it? do you know how easily you could zap the components and kill it in a heart beat? let alone if its plugged in 24/7 or even with the battery the charged capacitors zaps the hell out of you!

who would buy a laptop from someone that is used and the owner is careless with it? i wouldnt...

I think you may have a few screws loose! ;)

Minus one foot (compensated for) the bottom is only exposed to dust in comparison to with the panel on. I run myne on the cooler all the time. If i take it somewhere I would put the bottom back on, or just grab the vaio and take that.

The only thing that anyone outside of those who touch gas pumps before fueling their car as a religion would worry about is the second hard drive not having a bracket hangs down. Ive got an M50 bracket on order will see if it fits or can be modified to fit. Supported the drive, not for the drives sake but the sata interface shouldnt be stressed like that.

I guess when i drill the camera led light hole, and paint the chassis no one would want it then either? lol

LOL at first glance i thought you were concerned about my loosing the screws, they are taped to the bottom panel.

I should start a poll, because the conversations I have with people, i dont get the idea anyone sees me as careless. Otherwise they wouldnt pm me for advice on each step of something.

EDIT - Should mention the only careless mistreatment (not purposeful) the laptop recieved was the time I had to remove the cpu pipe after applying paste, after redoing it again i forgot the fan plug the second time. The card hit the 110C mentioned everyone knows that it happened. From the looks of things we will see a G51 hit that temp with the fan plugged in.

    the 9800m GTS(75w) actually has a HIGHER TDP than the 9800m GT(65w)

the GTS and GS(60w) are the same core. why is the TPD 15w higher in the GTS? probably because the GTS sports 1gb of memory vs 512mb in both the GS and GT.

id like to see more TDP ratings for the 260m, ive only seen 1 site that had decent info on the chip

the 65nm 9800m gtx has a 75wTDP with the EXACT same specs as the 260m in the g51, i have a hard time believing that the same card at 55nm has the same TDP, i dont think its down to 60w like the 9800m GS but i bet its lower than 75w

Uhm... The GTS runs at a higher voltage and has higher clocks. That generally creates more heat.

The MXM 2.1 260M has the same TDP as the 9800M GT, 65w. 75w GPUs overheat and downclock in the M860TU even running 3Dmark.

The 260M upgrade for the M860TU does come with a very minor heatsink revision, probably to accommodate the additional 512MB of RAM.

ahh true, i did not take that into account.

so the 260m is only 5w higher than the 9800m GS in the g50, if asus did lower voltage along with the clocks then that should put them in the same 60w envelope that the g50 had

Clutch you have your card flashed to GTS correct?, what temps do you get with your GS flashed to GTS voltages/temps?

GTS run on 1.11V, my GS run's on 1.15V and clocks alot higher then GTS,so my GPU produce more then 80W. Max GPU temp 86C with CPU OC'd to 2.9, on cooler 81C, so someting is not right with these units!

tavara, have you replaced the thermal paste??

do we know what voltage asus has the 260m at?

EDIT** to rule out the chance that it might be the temp diode placement one of you guys with one of these g51's run a game for a 10-15 minutes and touch your finger to the heatsink, youll know if its really running 100c.

yea all this talk of really high temps are really putting me off from buying it

I hope it can get sorted out otherwise I'll probably end up getting the G71 as well.

Best Buy units are only under warranty for a year, so less expensive thermal solutions could have been used. I'm more interested in learning about Newegg's versions of the G51/60/71 and whether reseller's units having 2 year warranty's have improved solutions.

Although temps may seem high, are they beyond the operating range of the 260 or is this talk of high temps a normative reaction?

It's pretty damn high but people still seem to be able to run benchmarks so I'm guessing it's not frying up everything inside but honestly it doesn't seem logical to buy a laptop that might die in 6 months or so.

Also, posters in this thread ought to be mindful of its topic and purpose and, therefore, need to cease the personal attacks, use of hyperbole, and fostering of drama. In short, cooler heads should prevail here.

    Mike,

What site did you get that information off of? Did they say that it would be available online at the same time Best Buy will have theirs? Or will it be longer?

    Thanks,

    Adam

Do a google search on the name Justin Woitte and it links it to xoticpc.com. They have the G71 coming on June 24 however they start at a whopping $1968. Way out of my budget and quite frankly for that price, it damn well better have a better warranty and come with some accessories. :p

The laptops that Best Buy sell are NOT "knock offs", they are just stripped of some things (lower resolution screen, lesser warranty, no accessories, POSSIBLY a lower-quality heatsink / lower clocked GPU, dual-core processor instead of a quad-core, and a single 500GB instead of two 320GB), but this is done to make the laptop fit within the price range that Best Buy feels they can sell it for. A "knock off" refers to a counterfeit or fake, while this is neither, just a different configuration and look designed to make Best Buy comfortable with selling it. Personally, if the reviews for the G71GX-RX05 that Best Buy sells are favorable, than I'm probably going to get that, and I'd rather get it than one from an official ASUS reseller that will cost almost $800 more [even after including tax from my local Best Buy] (which I don't really need the accessories, and I automatically get a 2-year warranty through my credit card company because I have a Platinum card).

A black/red ASUS-branded backpack (which is designed to compliment the look of the reseller G71GX) and a black ASUS-branded Razer Copperhead gaming mouse (with Blue LED).

lol wow please... can't believe they would go as far as saying BBs are knock-offs and stripped of accessories. For the price BB is offering, it's pretty incredible. Sure Xotic has some more features but it's also double the price essentially.

Not too much slower, 500/1250/800 vs 550/1350/800.

People are complaining about the low-res screen...Why do people like to have a higher res screen? Is this just incase people want to watch blue-ray movies? I would think that the res is the perfect size for gaming because of the better look of running at the native resolution...Help?

I don't mind the 1440x900 resolution of the G71GX-RX05 that much. My main beefs with it, is its not high enough to play 1080p video at native resolution (but I don't own any Blu-rays so that is a non-issue for me and it doesn't come with a Blu-ray drive so I'm not paying extra for something I wouldn't use), apparently the 1920x1200 screens have dual lamps which make the picture quality better while the 1440x900 resolution screens most likely do not, larger desktop monitors (20-24") are usually 1680x1050 or higher resolution, so if I wanted to use a desktop monitor while at home, I would have to switch resolutions, which can cause problems with window placement, and lastly, as a programmer the more screen real estate there is, the more code/documentation I can look at during the same time. However, for the most part, these are non-issues for me, and I can live happily having a 1440x900 resolution (I just wish it was 1680x1050 or better, but the price is already pretty sweet for what you get). However, the 1366x768 (720p) resolution of the G51VX-RX05 is way too small for me when doing word processing, programming, or database.

Also, I agree with you that gaming is nice at the native resolution, and this is one of the reasons I like the 1440x900 (it means I'll be able to play games at native resolution for quite some time).

On a different note, I hope the G71GX-RX05 comes with a good battery, or at least have the option to upgrade to one for not too much, I would like to be able to get at least 2 hours of battery life while doing word processing and maybe some Internet surfing / video watching.
