the G51 weighs 7.4 pounds from a calibrated digital scale with battery! it has the frame of a 17" laptop just a tad smaller
-
a temp probe is not going to help the fact the system is reading the gpu at 90-100c for 3d stuff, if the system in gpu-z, everest, hwmonitor and all the temp software out there is reading the gpu at the same temps and the critical temp is 108c the system once it reads the gpu up that high will shut down the gpu!!
seeing the true temperature at the core is not gonna do much good -

Has anyone picked up a G71 from BB yet? -

I think he means that it isn't very possible.

I agree the 260 is great but seriously it's not going to work miracles with the most intensive games at 1920 x 1080. However this laptop res is lower so you can expect more but still, Lets be serious here about its power. GTA4 and crysis are going to really destroy it. It is a mobile card, even most desktop cards fail to deliver in those games. -
1366x768 res on the asus g51 15.6" screen running vista 64bit with sp1 using nividia 185.85 whql mobile drivers with custom modded .inf file running crysis 1.21 32 bit mode with dx9 all settings on high and blood enabled, while playing the game and in the benchmarks that come with it i get an average f 30-35fps at the full res the laptop screen can handle.. (this system gets 8890 in 3dmark06 at reduced res of 1280x720)
now get the 17" version which has some more cpu juice and try to run high settings from crysis at 1920x1080 it wont do it u get maybe 10-15fps
my pc that im usin to respond on the msg boards is a q9400 quad overclocked to 3.2ghz, 400mhz fsb x 8, ddr2 ram running 1:1 ratio at ddr2800 with 5-5-5-15 timings using a samsung 23" lcd display at 1920x1080 60hz i get 32-37 average fps in crysis 1.21 dx9 32 bit in windows xp sp3. this is via a 9800GTX+ GPU SC from EVGA... (by the way this system gets 15,600 in 3dmark06)
just for laughs and giggles the same gpu core on the 9800+ GTX is a G92b core the same size and exact core on the mobile 260m gtx in the asus g51..
so in retrospec there is no way anyone is going to be running crysis or crysis warhead at 1920x1080 with any decent eye candy..
now with steam games all the source games you can run 1920x1080 full max details and have fps to spare!!! but the cpu and gpu demanding games, u wont have a chance at! -
It's still equivalent to a 9800 GT.
I was only speaking to the 10fps comment anyway; I'm aware that it's now a mid-tier chip in the grand scheme of things. It's still competent enough to run games at 1080p, and two unoptimized game engines aren't exactly the best measuring stick for its overall gaming strength. -
Does crysis run smooth on the g51 in 1366*768??
Are there shutter and framerate drop?
Just wondering if there are any games that can't be run smoothly on high-ish settings under the native res? (except for GTA4) -
Well I'm going to come back to this forum after Friday, when the G51 gets out. Hopefully by next Friday there should be some initial reviews of the heat, and maybe Asus will sell the updated heatsink (what you guys were talking about before) with the G51s. I'm set on buying this machine, but not if the heat is out of control.
On the bright side, I just got my display resolution to go to 1280 x 1024!!!! -
G51 in my local best buy!!
Someone, tell me that the temps are ok.. it's mine!
temp problems on the G71? thats not in yet.. but any day.. any day..
-
I think you should wait till july to hear from other people that buy the G51 or the G71. See if the temp problems keep occurring or occur at all.
-
how *late* in july ???
*twitch*
every day is painful hahaha..
but yeah, ill be waiting 2+ weeks to find out whats REALLY going on here.. something tells me its gonna be faulty sensors and not actual temps (or maybe its wishful thinking?)
we'll see. -
yea I know what you mean
The wait is killing me I want to get a G71 ASAP
-
I have a P-6831FX and a G50VT, and to me, both of their fan noises even at idle would be too loud for class.
Having said that, my ears are quite sensitive to fan noises. But that's something to consider as well; just because you're deaf, doesn't mean you won't be disrupting your neighbours with your fan running. -
dude im not sure but i think all the laptops on idle should be really quiet and with fan on low ...
idk about this model but the g50 had a energy saving mode which the fans were almost off -

[Problem Description]
just recently purchased this notebook the G51 at best buy, brought it home and
installed games and benchmark programs, while running these games and
programs to test system out i was running hwmonitor ver. 1.14 64 bit a temperature
monitoring program. I am concerned over the new gpu in the system due to the fact
that it reachs 90C-99c playing games just for 10 minutes while monitoring the temps
with this program there are two others on a msg board with the same exact gpu temps
as i am experienceing, i have owned several notebooks to know this does not seem
right and its not just my asus g51 notebook two others have the same exact issues
which can be found in these threads:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=384894&page=105
and
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=392176
so maybe the coolers shipped out with the first batch of laptops is bad? or the wrong
one since its identical to the asus g50? or maybe the vent that was on the bottom of
laptop that does nothing was not suppose to be sealed? in the long run this gpu will
fry itself at 99c and beyond and all of us are having this issue.. should i return laptop?
or can you guys send me a different cooler to install?
thanks -
Haha I'm impressed they responded in that manner, and quickly. Hopefully this will all get sorted out quickly!
-
if they find a hardware fault will they recall all the BB versions? so we'll have to wait longer?
-
if its major fault like gpu cards bad, or wrong cooler installed, then yes they would have to recall first batch, but i want a engineer to dirctly talk to that worked on the asus g51 andd see what they got to say... im not going to send a brand new laptop in just for them to test, they can test the ones coming out of their darn factory mine isnt going to be a test dummy for them to break more!
-
-
so youre not going to send your g51? what did you reply to them?
wouldn't your it be under warranty anyway? besides i dont think if ASUS broke your laptop trying to fix it theyre just going to say too bad. -
-
idk man if i were u i would wait some time ... at least a week to see if the new models will have the same problem
good luck -
I would so spend the extra $150 for the G71 had it not been for the size and weight of that thing!
The tradeoff is a bit steep (processor)
I am kind of cautious about getting the G51 at that due to the 2.0GHz CPU...
I don't really have the money to plow down another $200 right now. -
well guys from my research of other notebooks with a 260m or 280m gtx it looks like the higher temps are normal coming from the gpu.. anyways i found info in this thread about 90c+ temps from a 280m gtx the best vid card u can get for a laptop its over in the alienware area:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=384642
with there big thick copper heatsink cooler set up and big fan they are getting highs in the 80c range and lows in the 90c range.. they are of course worried too! and no retail mobile whql driver from nvidia detects the 280m correctly just like it wont detect the 260m correctly, its still too new of a gpu!
there are some mods they refer to about apply better thermal paste and adding thin custom copper shim plates, and also sanding down and making the copper more smooth! so from the sound of it, asus didnt make a mistake with there setup, they just used a cooler solution that was for the older gpus that cant handle the heat of the newer gpu!
i dont want to send in a brand new laptop that in someway could get damaged some other way besides a hot gpu, i emailed them and told them i would like to troubleshoot this issue with an engineer before sending the laptop in! i think the only way to get the temps down at home is to custom mod it and reapply thermal pads and thermal paste.. what the alienware users are doing now is trying to modify the bios and lower the clocks down.. -
more research...
over in the sager thread thay are having issues as well with playing grid and getting 102c on there 260m or 280m gpus and they have two fan setups and crap.. so it might be nvidias new gpu giving the issues!
remember i got my 260m gt thats downclocked already from asus up to 99c playing dmc4 benchmark!
check this out:

If you've emailed Asus, now just wait. I'm pretty sure everyone here knows about it, so you don't need to keep saying it.
Just food for thought. Wait till more of them [G51s] are out and what happens to more people, even though this seems like a recurring issue. -
-
It's not looking like an issue outside of the G51. -
Please Asus, I don't want to end up with my last option (MSI GT725)...
Please fix this problem for both G51 and G71...
I pray...
If not, I will curse them for luring me in with the awesome G51 backlit keyboard
victory shall be mine! lol -
Well made another trip to BB and no G51/G71 yet.
I really want to see those laptops in person -

This thread has become unbearable to read and ceased being rational and functional some pages back.

I just hope that by buying a few days early it doesn't cause issues with the Win 7 Upgrade down the road... -
Conratulations on the new toy -

Congrats on the laptop, although you probably should have waited 2 days -
