Had plenty, only ones i really see with the wheel on them these days is Toshiba. I think one of my thinkpads had one though. I personally dont like the wheels there a bit off but i also dont like having to press Fn to change the volume while gaming.
Some ASUS models like the W90 and i think the G70/G71 series have alternative controls though. I have the second scroll wheel on my mouse set to adjust volume.

Does anyone know when the u80 comes out?
-

Ah, yes, distance from the TJMax, yeah, I get it. So, if a tool thinks the TJMax is 200C (exaggeration, of course), then most CPUs would "show" it running at 120C at a real temp of 80C.
But GPUs don't do this....interesting!
Thanks for the info, mate.

clutch I'm reading your signature and I'm just curious
You said you upgraded your cpu on your g50
I have a g50vt a1, I was wondering does the upgrading the cpu help with game performance? and does it void the warranty? -
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
It does void the warranty though in the us and canada asus is known to overlook if the issue isnt cpu related, and if you wish to play games like GTA4, World in Conflict and Saints Row 2, among maybe some others or to jack the physics settings up in Far Cry 2 its needed. Where youre overclocked to now works fine for Far Cry 2 in general. Saints Row 2 would drop frames worse then it does for me now, and GTA4 would suck in either direction.
For the first three games i recommend a T9900 overclocked to 3.8 Ghz which would mean the hard to achieve on a laptop feat of a 333mhz bus (1333 rated). 3.5ish would be good for SR2, and okay for WiC, nothing short of a QX9300 overclocked into oblivion would make me happy with GTA4. -
what costs are we looking at?
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
I payed 260 for my T9600. Problem is your coming from a much better cpu then I was. I had a 2.13ghz P7450 to a 2.80 Ghz T9600 with twice the cache. The T9600 would be a slight bump, still more then you achieve with overclock and i have myne paste 3.2 ghz. The T9900 would be the biggest jump for you though the T9800 is more common and probably cheaper, you wont get as far with the overclock but bang for the buck id assume you could find a use T9800 for no more than 250.... ebay disagrees with me though.
-
I'll wait until the prices drop a little
my cpu can play anything it wants really right now -
Does everyone thing that the g51 and the g71 will have the same heating issues when they come out at stores other then Best Buy? Are they both really that hopeless?
-
If anything, the first batch of G51 would most likely have the same issue..
-
how to overclock the g51 cpu?
-
turbo button built in
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Uh...no lol
SetFSB or equivalent app until i get my utility out. G51 lacks included overclock software. PLL is ICS9LPR604AGLF -
oh that sucks lol
g50 FTW
btw clutch is there anyway I can overclock my cpu higher than 2.73? (2.73 is turbo extreme mode right?) -
Ahaha I sent an email to a store in Quebec, Dumoulin Électronique, about the G51 and this is what i got from them:
D’après nos fournisseurs, le G51 a été remplacer par le G50VT-X8-BIL @ $1,598.88. Le G50VT-X4-BIL n’est plus disponible. N’hésitez pas à me contacter si vous avez d’autres questions. Merci et bonne journée.
SUmmary in english:
According to our distributors, the G51 have been replaced by the G50VT-X8.
? -
I would just like to say as a general consensus of our forum, I feel like we are all disappointed by the results of the g51 and g71 because of the heating issue...I really felt let down
Anyone else agree?

No. Life goes on. -
I got 86 degrees after one hour of crysis. My G51 seems to be OK.
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
You went and bought it yay, so gonna work on the leds? lol im kidding but nice to see you got yours. -
I got a G51 yesterday and it's running fine. I played LOTRO for about an hour and the GPU reached 81 max with settings on high.
-
Is it normal to see such high temperatures on these new Asus laptops...
It scares me actually, I don't believe I have seen GPU's reach these temperatures on other laptops besides SLI's. -
Oh yeah, just wait till I get my dev tools migrated to the G51, and I'll go wingdb on its [rear end]!
-
Haha it's ironic because he's saying it's running cooler than the previous temps posted here. The first temp report we got was at 97C after just 10 mins of Crysis, which is simply ridiculous. These two last people saying temps were in the 80s is a huge relief!
The new 260m's run hot, that temp should be quite fine. Now that all that is sorted out, they need to hurry up and release one with a faster processor

What is everyone getting for 3dmark06?
Stock clocks on the vc
proc o/ced to 2.4

G8 at what res? 1280x720 or 1366x768?
To compare between you thats all find, to compare with the world grabbing an external and doing it at 1280x1024 is better for comparison.
Still running the stock drivers? -
Still have not found any G51's near me,
closest is like 30 miles away
before I begin my roadtrip can someone tell me exactly what color it is, some pictures have it a bright white while other sites (BB) have it look like it's a metallic white.?????
Just wondering what to expect
Hope fully they won't sell out before I get there. -
The back looks shiny, bright white: http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/9366/9366651_sa.jpg
The front is entirely black: http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/9366/9366651cv1a.jpg -
get use to seeing these temps
It's normal especially for asus
My asus g50vt a1 laptop 9800 gs was hitting 80+ out of the box and with a littl dust in there got up in the 90+ c
Once it got up to 102 c but that was the final straw and I took it apart and cleaned it
I would very happy with 81 c
dangit I wish there was some way I could switch the cases of the g51 and my g50
the g51 case looks so cool -
Yeah seen those but is it more a metallic greyish white or more of a pure bright white? some pictures I have seen make it look a much brighter white than then the pics posted at BB.
I know it's a very minor detail but......or maybe it's just my crappy screen on my netbook -
Ahh I understand what you are saying now, its a shiny pure white back from what I remember (stopped by BB the other day), not really metallic/greyish. But at my BB the back was up against a wall sort of thing, I didnt realize it was the G51 till I lowered the lid to check!
-
You consider 30 miles to be a road trip? What are you, EUROPEAN?!!!!111one
Had to say it! -
Yeah no kidding we call 30 miles "halfway to work"
-
I read on best buy reviews that it has a webcam but no integrated microphone, is this true?
How is the webcam quality? -
Guy at BB told me there was, in fact a mic. He showed a little speaker-like thing by the webcam.
-
ok heres what ive got so far.
G51-RX05 stock except for a RAID-0 with seagate 320's (stock HDD)
I am running nvidias 186.03 w/modded inf so in some programs it reports a 170m as the GPU
3Dmark06: 10546 with CPU@2550 and GPU@600/1500/1000
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=11338725
HDTune: 2xSeagate 320gb 7200.3 in RAID-0 w/64k Stripe
-
Why yes I am
Just don't want to waste my time -
Wow! great scores !
What did you use to OC the GPU? -
the nvidia system tools v6.03
-
Do the temps stay stable at those clocks?
Have you done any long gaming sessions(1 hour or more)?
If you can Oc the stock CPU that much think of would it could do with a P 8700 or something similar or even better than that
-
Ive gamed with the CPU overclocked, i have it prime95 stable 8hrs+ @ 2.5ghz w/1.175v. Right now the memory and/or motherboard is holding the CPU back it starts to get unstable around 510-520mhz.
The GPU I havent gamed with overclocked, only ran 3dmark06 with it overclocked. I didnt see an increase in temps until i hit the 600mhz core mark though.
**before you guys start overclocking your vid cards. I did take my heatsinks off after seeing sunnys pics and my GPU like his was only partially making contact, i didnt remove any paste but i did add as5 as a gap filler. The highest temp ive seen is 93c running crysis demo. I play A LOT of CSS and after an hr or so the gpu will get ~86c at stock speeds -
is the 16 inch version going to hit USA any time soon?
-
just got done with a 2hr CSS session with the GPU at 600/1500/1000 and the temp peaked at 87c
-
That's great news!
Going to go pick one up today, if I could find one! -
Be careful with your memory frequency. 1000MHz might not hold up during a more modern game.
-
CSS is not a heavy game to push the laptop with, actually - anything using the Source engine is not going to push any laptop because the source engine is about 3-4 years old. The source engine is outdated beyond belief and is super easy to Max it out and not even have the computer dying like Crysis and few other NEW games.
Crysis and newer games are what I'm worried about because those are graphics intensive (and what I plan on playing first). Glad you posted the temp for Crysis but I'm still not head over heels in wanting these new Asus laptops just yet, I believe Asus can fix/lower these temps in some way or another (I want the G71 more than the G51 due to screen size and specs). Once they do, Asus can have my money
!
-
I just noticed that the specs on bestbuy say the G51 only has 10/100 lan. Is that true? That's actually a deal breaker for me if it is.
-
@ tizzao
whats a 10/100 lan? sorry. -
The wired network adapter. Some handle 10mbps and 100mbps. Others go up to 1000mbps.
1000 is a must have for me since I'll have it constantly plugged into my desktop via crossover cable (it's for networking 2 computers without a router) while I'm at home.
the new asus g51
