Ok, heres one for ya. These temps are taken after 10min of furmark and prime95 running simultaneously. CPU and GPU are at max stable OC... [email protected] 1.25v GPU@600/1500/1000 stock voltage. I have applied as5 to cpu and gpu now, I have also slightly bent the gpu heatsink for better contact (i think there might be a flaw). Room temp is 76f and i have a laptop cooler pulling air away from the bottom of the laptop

Looks like it's safe to overclock the 260M.

In which case I'll be doing that immediately after picking up a better processor.

Any recommendations on what to put in this system in order to get the most out of the 260?

Yes. I'm also patiently waiting for a CNET or other site to "officially" review it :) I don't know why I put so much faith in official reviews

the best thing you can pick up. I gained just over 2k points in 3dmark from a 500mhz CPU boost. From there i overclocked the 260m to 600/1500/1000 and only picked up maybe 400pts.

I'm really liking this laptop so far. I haven't done much temp readings but it idles around 62C on high performance settings which I guess is consistent with what others are reporting. As far as gaming goes, Fallout 3 ran beautifully so far on ultra settings and Prototype ran well on it's max settings (with 2x AA). Don't have Crysis yet (got the Maximum DRM edition on order :p) but looking forward to trying that.

As far as the laptop design goes, the keyboard is quite nice. The mouse buttons feel a bit stiff to me compared to my old laptop but I guess it's just a matter of getting used to. I also miss not having dedicated volume control buttons (have to press Fn-F10 and Fn-F11 to adjust on the G51) but again, just something to adjust to.

Also does anyone know how to stop the LED lights on the laptop lid from blinking when the comp is in standby? It's not a big deal but just a bit annoying.

I heard from a retailer that the other non Best Buy G51's will be coming mid July.

I really want to see what happens when someone puts a quad in this thing. I'm planning on upgrading to a Q9200, and I'm obviously worried about the temperatures. I think I might be okay however considering that I will not be using this notebook for gaming but for photoshop and video editing.

Have fun with your quad :D

I wonder how much I can upgrade my cpu in my g50vt a1...

Unfortunately, I have to voice concerns over stressing a Core 2 Quad in this chassis. A 2Ghz, 25w Core 2 Duo is reaching 78° @ 2.5Ghz, double the cores, 2.4Ghz @ 45w is going shoot the temps through the roof. At least 90° Celcius under load, and the critical temp for mobile quads is 100°. Not good.

Why are you choosing the G51 if you don't plan to play games? I think you could find something else where you aren't wasting your money on a video card.

It's really the only 15" I could find that can support quads and is less than $1000 (+ the Q9200 it will be $1150 if I can negotiate the price down to $900 like others have done).

I seriously doubt it will get to 100ºC with the programs that I will be using. I'm probably not going to be playing GTA 4 on this thing any time soon however...

Photoshop and video editing will load the cores enough to max the temps, more than some games. The P7350 hit 78 degrees after a Furmark run, a GPU stressing program, a fact which doesn't bode well for 45w CPUs with even two cores under full load. You're free to try it, but I'd be wary.

The only other 15" that supports quad off the top of my head(and thats not too costly eg. Clevo M860TU) is the newer MS-1651 ID2 barebone.

    Advantages for you:
    -Higher resolution screen
    -Runs cooler
-Smaller and weighs a pound or two less
    -Better battery life
    Disadvantage
-Cost won't come down until july/august most likely

On the other hand if you compare some of the smaller 17" laptops, they aren't much bigger than the G51. The G50/51 are rather large 15" notebooks. So that would open your options up more. Just food for thought.
I don't have anything against the G51, I'm considering it myself.

Has anyone tested the G51 with some MMO's like Warhammer Online, WOW or AION?

I am very curious to know how the G51's stock CPU holds up to some serious large scale PVP/PVE action.

One person said that he went into bestbuy and asked for a G50 and the salesman said that they did not carry the laptop anymore. Then the salesperson showed him the G51, and the guy said that it was out of his budget so the salesman said that they could reduce the price to $899.

Another person said that they reduced the price to $899 because he bought a bestbuy warranty... Since two people were able to get the laptop for $899 I figured that it would at least be worth a shot!

Which is normal. But if you ask for 100 discount, they'll make you purchase warranty so basically it's 80 bucks for warranty. Not bad IMO.

    It's July now... where's my G51, man?!? :p :p

Seriously tho probably by the end of the month or early August. For example G50V was 'available' in early July/late June of last year, but wasn't available most places until mid July/August (which is when I got mine).

Why? The G71 isn't any better than the G51 on xoticpc. They have the same CPU and GPU, but the G51 has a smaller AND higher resolution screen and dual hard drives. The only thing it doesn't have is 6GB of RAM (only 4).

    Prices:
    G71 from BB- $1399.99 + 7% tax (for me) = $1497.99
    G51 from xoticpc- $1599.53 (cash) + Free s/h = $1599.93

So, for a hundred bucks more, you end up getting slightly more portable computer with just as much power, a better screen, and better hard drives.

Of course, for that price, I'd go with a Sager, but this is the Asus forum, so there ya go. ;)

What's the deal on the G60? Any release date yet and whether or not BB will carry it? I could easily overlook the ugly transformers cover if it meant having a high quality 1080p display coupled with a GTX 260m. Damn it, this sucks, I've been waiting on a good laptop for sometime now and Dell finally got the 4670 for the Studio XPS 16 so I ordered it. Now I'm tempted to cancel it and wait out the G60...what to do what to do...
