Is there any graphs or way for me to find which ES version is closest to release version?

To answer your question, yes the ES CPU will work, and shouldn't fry anything. However, you should keep in mind that ES CPUs have less mature core steppings and may be slightly slower than the production variants.

There may be other places that sell the mobile Q9200, but the only place i know right now is killernotebooks.com. They don't sell the Q9200 individually, but they do offer it as an upgrade option for a few of their notebooks. You might want to give them a call and ask if they would sell you one.

    Cool. I'll look into that.

Though, granted, a slightly slower than normal Q9200 should still be pretty decent.

But I'll try KNB before I try ES versions.

EDIT: I found this OEM QX9300 for less then 700. Seems a little too good to be true--since I saw another one on eBay for 1100+--but you never know.

I'm assuming from Clutch's earlier comment that this, too, is compatible?

Ah, I'm really lazy and didn't read through the hundreds of pages, so this may have already been asked and answered.

Anyway, I'm thinking about buying this but I'm concerned about all the over heating I'm hearing about. I don't think this will be a huge problem for me since I won't really be using it for any intense gaming. But I am the kind of person this is on 24/7. I will mainly be using it for school and movies and music, and occasionally Photoshop.

Also, how would you compare the Asus G51 to the Dell Latitude E6500 on a non-gaming laptop level? I only ask because the Dell is recommended by my school for students looking into my major.

I just got the G-51 a couple days ago. So far it is great. It comes with windows vista home 64 bit and I put windows 7 on it to try it out. As far as the keyboard... It is backlit as in what is wrote on the keys lights up. it is not one of those that the light shows around the keys. I have ran left4dead on it and it runns real smooth. I am going to put GTA4 ,call of duty 4, and prototype on it and see how those do. So far I am real happy. :D

I still can't find any word on the HDMI port. Does anyone who owns one of these know if it's HDMI 1.3 or 1.2? Also, do you know if it does audio over the HDMI?

I'm about ready to bite the bullet on one of these since the U80V is looking like it's going to cost the same with just more style and weaker parts.

^ it has 5.1 audio via hdmi. also, isnt the only thing that makes 1.3 > 1.2 is that the tv remote controls the dvd player (or whatev it is)? I doubt they'll make a laptop that can be controlled by tv remote, but that would be awesome.

HDMI 1.3 This version includes improvements in both audio and video capability. With the advent of Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD, version 1.3 adds the ability to transfer the digital bitstreams for the new high resolution audio formats: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and.....

HDMI 1.3 and 1.3a increase the amount of video bandwidth that can be transferred from a source to a display. This means, that in addition to the standard 24-bit color depth we are used to, HDMI 1.3 and 1.3a have the ability to transfer color depths up to 48-bits, and can accommodate resolutions much higher than the 1080p resolution standard that is in use today.

Even given the above I do not believe that the G51 or G71 has the hardware (no Blu-ray) or internal processing to take advantage of 1.3 or 1.3a out of the box, so my guess is it is 1.2 like 99% of the other HDMI equipped laptops. A confirmation would be great though.

^ Oh, well Nvidia site says the 260 gtx has a digital support of 2048x1536 so since thats higher than 1080 I assume they used a 1.3. I dont see why they wouldnt, I cant imagine it costing them more to do so.

Hey guys, im thinkin about preordering or buying a g51 from newegg when its available but i dont know too much about processors. U think it would be worth the extra buck to get the high end quad core CPU or just go for the 3.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo? Also, why does the high end Core 2 Duo (3.0 Ghz) have a higher Ghz than the quad core (2.53 Ghz) if the quad core is suppose to be better? Which one would be better for high end video games?

Can you specify exactly what games are you playing, beause at the moment there are only a few which perform better on 4 cores.

If ur choosing between Q9000 and P7350 then obvoiusly the Q will be a better choice but IMO it would be better to buy the G51 and change the CPU to T9600 or better which performs better than Quds in ~85% of the games at the moment.

I play FPS games like Call of Duty: WaW, Cod4 and stuff like that. RPG games sometimes. It seems theyr gonna offer a T9800 so ill prolly go with that and upgrade to a quad later.

As I posted earlier, and as a3r0x posted above, if you are comparing the 2.0Ghz Core 2 Quad to a much higher-Ghz Core 2 Duo (such as the T9600 @ 2.8Ghz), I would take the Core 2 Duo for now. You are correct to say that it is more "future-proof" to go with a Core 2 Quad, but the quad that will be offered for the G51 is quite low in terms of speed, it really wouldn't be a worthwhile purchase. Even the games that do claim to support quad core don't take complete advantage of it and there is currently no scenario in games where will you will be able to use the full potential of a quad.

Again, down the road, quads will become more and more practical in gaming, but as of now, go for a high-Ghz duo. Once Quads base Ghz get faster (which shouldn't be too long really), make the switch.

Unless the temperature readings they're getting are reporting errors, I don't think this bios update is going to help G51 owners much.

Yeah, I think someone mentioned that disabling the sound in BIOS turned off the sound for windows as well... the update might just be addressing a simple bug like that. Of course, we could hope that it has to deal with faulty temp readings ;-)

Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase this laptop from Best Buy, as I have a relative over there in the US atm. The only problem is that I live in Australia, so I am a bit worried about the warranty as I understand its only a 1 year (US only?) warranty.

Is it possible to purchase an international warranty off best buy? if so, how much extra does it cost?

XoticPC is also saying the ETA is the 3rd week of July. So people who have pre-ordered should be seeing theirs at the end of July (and maybe early August if they've customized/upgraded some of the internals). Just in time for school...

Bios 213 G50VT-X5 here, disabled post sound in bios, no rog sound, still have sound in windows. Shutdown again unplugged ac and battery (thoug bios is saved by cmos battery, without it would get wiped out), Booted still had sound in windows, shut down again checked the setting.

I seriously say all the G50 issues that were bios or software related do not exist in myne. No keyboard lag and i can not prove there are any missed strokes. On a rare occasion i have one but im known for being a very poor typist.

But anyways my point is the same, some people have had the bug since the very first BIOS.

what would be a good cooling stand for this due to the vent blowing air out the side and the vent sucking air in on the bottom, specific brans, just types, or descriptions of how they shold funtion for this laptop would be appreciated.

is the heating problem of the g51 limited to just the video card?, or is the hard drive and also processor over heating? it seems most that 15'' with a gtx 260m are having heat problems.. the sager np 8660 seems having problems with high hard drive temp..

From what I can gather this laptop runs on the hot side and the temps for the G51 are pretty normal.
So now you ask is it safe to buy one? Sure thing, it's a pretty good deal, just keep in mind the 260M GTX runs hotter in the G51 than some other laptops (NP 8662) but still in the acceptable range.

Nice, they came back to the OLED and they also include the ASUS Direct Console. But theres no mention of the OLED in Xoticpc, so i wonder if it's not a typo.

Does this laptop also qualify for the Win 7 upgrade?

    wow..

Yea this laptop runs on the hot side, i definitely agree.

I have a targus cooler from bb, which works fine, but its definitely the graphics card that outputs the most heat in the system.

The right side of my laptop is cool while the left side, where the gfx card lies, is hotter.

Has anyone removed the block from this vent and checked for temperature improvements?

I’m hoping by undervolting the CPU, removing the vent block, applying better thermal paste (AS5?) to CPU/GPU + a notebook cooler, this laptop should get much cooler.

Would 15c less hot be too much to hope with those changes? Anyone can guess how much cooler it would be with the mods but without the notebook cooler?

I’m assuming undervolting the CPU will also decrease the heat on the GPU since the GPU and CPU shares the same cooling system.

Anyone with experience can comment on this?

I’m thinking of getting this laptop and upgrading its CPU to P9700 when the warranty runs out or when I get desperate enough.
    Thanks.

Removing the cover on that vent will not fix the problem. In fact, it could make it worse. The reason for the cover is so that the fan draws air from the other vents which just so happen to be over the major components. This helps cool those components and keeps hot air from stagnating in various spots. The consequences of removing the cover would mainly be evident when not running a notebook cooler. It may possibly run cooler with the vent cover removed while running a notebook cooler but otherwise I think it would be a detriment.

I wonder if the A1 version will include the "a for mentioned BIOS update" and if that is what allows for "power boost" or turbo gear OC'ing?

Does Ken or Justin know if the A1 will have any internal heating redesign or rerouting to help with the increased thermals of the Quad processor over that tiny Centrino or is the only real option/benefit going to be better thermal paste (if taken as an upgrade)?

To the best of my knowledge you need Direct Console to control those lights, which the Best Buy G51 doesn't have.

Clutch is developing a DC variant which will do the same things as Direct Console, and maybe more. I should read up more on that thread.

Hey guys, can someone help summarize any problems that I should be concerned about with the G51? I was thinking of getting the G71 instead but I might not have enough money, so I might settle for the G51. I tried looking for answers to my questions but with 175 pages and counting I thought it would be easier to just ask here.

Are there any special problems I should know about the G51? With the G71 there's this whole BIOS issue, and from what I've read, the G51 runs pretty hot. Any other things I should be concerned about before considering buying this laptop? Software or hardware-wise?
