    Issues as in problems?

Just the heat. It tends to run hot, but, as I think Sunny asked, Asus has confirmed that the hot temperatures are normal for the laptop. It's nothing computer-wrecking, that's for sure.

But for "issues" meaning "I-wish-it-was-better" yeah, there are a lot. But no computer is perfect.

G71's video card voltage issue has had a bios release to fix it already.

Well, not really "I wish it was better", but I was more so asking about if the computer will work right out of the box (as in play games in high settings, run art programs) or will I have to install certain things like the BIOS fix for the G71?

Check this thread if you want in-depth answers.

But if you don't want to wade into that huge thread, yes, the computer will work right out of the box.

The G51 has no major issues--other than the above-mentioned heat issue--that I know of.

You should be able to play most games at high, but be warned that the CPU can be a bottleneck depending on the game. If you want to optimize it so it plays best, ask around here for video drivers and how to use SetFSB.

Oh, and try to use it in conjunction with a laptop cooler.

In regards to the G51, what can a bios update do that will reduce heat? Undervolting and throttling up the fan speed?

Pretty much, that is it. You're not going to lower the G51's temps substantially through a bios update. You could lower the temps at which the fan kicks in to high, but that will just hasten dust accumulation leading to problems, sooner than later, down the road.

BTW, isn't the bios update intended for G71 owners?

Yes, the G71's are the ones in need, but the most recent facebook post mentioned the G51 as well. It might be just a minor tweak to bring it down 1-2 degrees.. I guess we'll see if and when they come out with the official release.

Anyone have a good guess or actual answer to why the BB G51 does not come with 'turboboost' utilty allowing for a slight OC to the CPU?

It seems that the Quad model from resellers will have the power boost.

Would BIOS really undervolt? I figure at manufacture they put a safety tolerance so I don't a BIOS would do that.

I guess it was a typo by the facebook guy. Only the G71 is getting a new BIOS. He just updated facebook with this

ASUS Official Page There are no known issues with the G51 that require a bios update.

There is no updated BIOS for the G51 that I'm aware of. Now the G71 may be a different story. In any case, you can always ask the folks at GenTech or Xotic if they will install it, if it isn't already, before they ship.

I bought my G51 about a week ago and one of the first things i tried to do was update my drivers. Every time i try to update the video drivers for the 260 gtx the program states one of two things:

1). The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers compatible with your current hardware. Set up will now exit.
    OR
2). Fatal Error: You are running a 32 bit version of nvidia uninstaller on a 64 bit system. Wrong Version of uninstaller. Uninstaller exits now.

I've even tried uninstalling my current video drivers and then running the update but got the same errors..I'm relatively new to vista but didnt think there would be much of a difference between xp.. I was just wondering if anyone had the same problem and if you have advice on how to fix it id be eager to hear the solution
The drivers I am trying to install are named: 186.03_notebook_winvista_64bit_international_whql(2 They seem to named the right thing so i have no idea whats wrong

Well, as listed on LV2G, 186.03 only comes out for Windows 7.

What do you use your computer mostly for? If you using it for games, try Dox's drivers in the forums section. 185.85 is the most stable and supports the 260m

Thanks, I found the one part while playing around in BB but I could not find the one with the flaming graphic that allows the "turbo" or "extreme turbo". So it allows for a roughly 7.5% OC. Maybe in future updates they will allow it to go higher or just use SetFSB.

Did the CPU heat change much when using "extreme turbo" hehe 7.5%

Nice to see you actually have overclocking for now and thanks for the screen shot gives me ideas. I doubt they will change the amount allowed in the past it was 5 and 10% which is what InDirect Consoles defaults will be.

I finally was able to drive out to BB (it's a while away for me) and I must say that I am impressed with the G51. It's a great size (I don't like the 17" notebooks), the quality is very good for a system of this price, and it looks awesome! Of course the screen leaves plenty to be desired, but that's why I plan on ordering online...just not yet.

Personally, I am going to wait until an A2 model comes out. By then they will have worked out the major kinks and they should be offering some good options by then too...we'll see. (actually, I just bought a new car and I need to build up my savings again). But I just wanted to be another one to say that it's a great looking laptop.

Kinks will be worked out mid stream if there are fixes while the A1 is in production especially hardware they will be in those A1's, and any A1 RMA'd which is what your trying to avoid. The A2 is usually just an alternate high end spec which has oddly yet to appear this time but since the A1 isnt shipping I cant say anything. You should recognize that th RX05 is actually the work the kinks out model and the A1 was purposely launched later, not just for that reason but is one of them. Other reasons might be supply for particular parts, testing, redesigning the heat sink maybe.

A2 i think on the G50 was the bluray model, on the N90Vp models just the hard drive capacity varies.

    Look at this!
A G51 with a Black lid and Blue pattern on the retail version.
Looks exactly like the first BB version of the G50vt-X1
Never expected another color, but I will admit this it looks much better than the White one ;)
I hope they just didn't put up the wrong image of it or have some sort of typo.
This caught me by surprised, the only images we have seen of the G51 models all have the WHITE lid.
I guess the G51 is going old school!

Little screen shot. This is 100 percent stable. Still haven't been able to hit a stable 2.6ghz. It will run 3dmark06 but after 2 hours of game play it'll lock up.

Your pushing the upper limits of anything done with a G50. 342 is a pretty high fsb and at that point the ram is at 512 Mhz or 1Ghz rated which is 112mhz over what its rated for.

P7350 record is 3 Ghz achieved in an ASUS B80 using 1 GB of Nanya Ram. FSB was 403mhz.

Update on the G51 retail version!
The reported heat issues have been addressed with a BIOS update and also fixed is the improperly applied thermal paste issue.
Also with the retail version you get a EEE Stick which ASUS's version of the Wii controller.
Sounds like it has some potential.

Speaking of paste, is there any special way to apply it. I've watched one youtune video where a guy just put a rice-sized drop on the CPU and squished the heat sink over it.

Another video showed a guy spreading the paste around with a card.

Well, it's "only" fifty dollars. It's really only a cosmetic difference. Instead of an OMG THREE DIGITS!" price its "OH NOEZ FOUR DIGITS!" price.

That being said, it's really puzzling why Best Buy would pull this. Maybe they see how hot it's selling and want the few extra bucks?

In any case I'm glad I bought it when it was $999.

They did the same thing with the Gateway FX line of laptops, It might be common practice for BB to have a sort "sale" price when a new product comes out then jack up the price when people are creating a buzz for it and are hooked.
I'm sure with a little sweet talking you can probably talk them down to the original price.
