Actually i also have acer netbook and another alienware laptop but i cant fit anymore to the desk, Alienware is one of the dinky earlier version so i dont bother using it anymore. :)

Anyways, as you can see i find a very cheap solution for my heating problem.

Just got done playing the original Crysis on very high at the native res (no AA) with the G51. Man the game looks gorgeous on those settings. I didn't do FPS checks but I'm guessing it was somewhere in the 20's. Performance was good enough for me get through the game on normal.

I'd also recommend getting the 1.2 Patch. I was running the game vanilla but the game started to chug a bit in the snow levels. Performance went back to normal after getting that patch though. Also used the default drivers that came with the comp. Loving this comp.

Will XoticPc's AS5 on the GPU lower the temp to "normal"

well its a possibility. sunnyc90 has tried AS5 on his g51 and temps are about the same, so its not certain it will lower it to normal temps on the best buy version version. asus might do some revisions on the retail version so there is a possibility that the g51 might be cooler. asus also stated that those temps are normal for the g51.

I know the hot GPU will reduce its lifespan. Can the heat be felt through the laptop as well?

Ok just out of curiosity what might one consider the "lifespan" of a typical GPU? 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years? I mean if one should expect 6 years before death but because it runs hotter in a tighter chassis like the G51 it might (stress might) die in 4.5 years then no biggie as I would suspect you would want a new gaming laptop by then as it probably couldn't play much of anything "current"

Thats not the point. Not everybody is changing computer after 3years. I have my desktop pc since 2003-2004. No upgrade on it just more RAM. I can play COD4 and L4D on it.

This is waht we call overconsumption.

I'm visitting new york next week, and I wonder where should I buy this laptop, preferably in Manhattan. It's a new model, I assume they don't sell it on every possible computer store? Pardon my ignorance, never been there :)

    Thanks in advance

Personally I like the Black with Blue design, the White BB version looks good but it's not what I'm looking for.

I don't quite care for that design either, but to each his/her own.

There have been claims that the reseller versions of this laptop are using the same backpanel design as the g50vt-x1 and the pictures on Gentech's website are evidence of this. However, it's still just speculation. I really don't see why they'd change the design to an old one after all that talk of G51's unique chasis, but whatever.

    x6 backpanel > x1 backpanel.

    Clean and black. No design.

Is there only one model for the reseller?
I want something more like the G71 BB but in 15.6" format and of course, in the same price range

What point? The point that no one has provided proof that the GTX260 will suffer a shorter life in the G51 as opposed to any other laptop. It might be the general consensus that higher temps will shorten the GPU lifespan but it seems unknown by how long; because those making the comments do not provide the data to back up the statement. So I asked will it die 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, or more sooner? People say things like "I know", so others like me are curious, "Ok, how do you know and do you know by how much?"

My point, that you didn't seem to get, is if it is determined a typical mobile GPU running within its tolerance temps would last on average 6 years before experiencing high failure rates but by subjecting the GPU to temps beyond factory tolerances that lifespan is reduced by a factor equal to the increase we can then make an educated guess if that is acceptable based on how long we as consumers require the product to remain in service.

No not everyone is changing computers after 3 years (nor was it stated as such) however if those "higher temps" were to cause the G51 GTX260GPU to start experiencing higher than normal failure rates say after 2 years; then someone like yourself who might need their equipment to last longer than 2 years or 3 years or even 6+ years might not want to buy a G51 because of it. Then there are those that buy a new gaming laptop every year or two who might not be to concerned.

So maybe it would be good to determine if in fact the higher temps will actually have a negative impact on the service life of the G51 or not.

P.S. I have a desktop thats 6 years old and can run newer games too, it just plays them craptasticly.

I was looking in to buying this laptop but now I'm having second thoughts is the temperature problem really that bad, to the extent where it will make the lifespan of this laptop shorter than that of the average laptop.

It was stated earlier that Asus claims the "high" GPU temps are within normal temps for it. What I'm really worried about is feeling the heat through the laptop. Will the surface of the laptop be hot to the touch?

if it heats up that much, then you might feel it in the upper left keyboard region, but the hard drive is cool so you wont feel that on the palm rest.

the best buy version (g51vx-rx05) is just the lower end, stripped down version of the g51vx, hence why it has a lower cpu, lower res and no bluetooth. the retail version (g51vx-a1) however features all a full hd res (1920x1080), a quad cpu, dual hard drives and possibly a new lid (the g50vt-x1 design). this version hasn't been released yet and so asus may well do revisions on it.

most of the resellers have stated that it should be ready for the 3rd week of july. as for the temps being lower, its a possibility since asus has not officially said to the public that they fixed the issues, but on their facebook page they said they have made a bios update which addresses the g51's temp problems but has not released this update. so we are only left to assume that the update is already implemented in the retail version or will be released once the retail version comes out.

it is not released yet so no news on that.

Agreed. Like SteelersWorship implied at least a hundred pages ago, this thread's usefulness has leveled out to mere speculation and questionaire galore. The most we can do now is wait for the official release or new information from Asus themselves. At least twenty new accounts have been made just for this thread.

I'm patiently waiting for the new bios too.
this laptop definitely heats up if left running for a long time, you can feel the whole left side is heated.

but it doesn't crash or break up the video display, so it's no big deal for me.

The 260M has problems with Crysis on high. In 2-3 years, many games coming out will force you to low or medium resolutions. By 5 years, a strong majority will, I'd say.

well the gtx 260m is a pretty powerful single gpu solution next to the gtx 280m. i'd say it will last ~2 yrs with some overclocking. by 3 yrs you'd have to settle for medium to low settings. by then newer, stronger cards will be out. but right now, the cpu in the best buy version is really holding the system back.

    edit: my 5yr old P4 desktop (2.0Ghz) with a 7600GS still kicks my dad's fujitsu with a 2.20Ghz dual core and x3100 butt. :D

the 260m is more than enough to manage crysis on very high. its just the cpu reducing performance. you should get much better fps when you overclock the g51 back to stock clocks (550/800/1350) and at least a cpu at 2.4Ghz

oh yeah i forgot to add my budget is $1300, and i will need this laptop for grades 11-12 and first 2-3 years of university. Plus the processor on the asus is already so weak, im not a experienced with upgrading laptops (so there goes the upgrade the processor idea). If it's going to be used for 4-5 years I would like it to be able to handle at least some games on medium setting oh and i guess the video and audio editing programs that my courses will most likely involve. (before it was between G51, G71 and P-1807u but G71 doesn't have enough battery life and costs too much. SO it's between these to laptops. lol wow i wrote a lot rofl

Replacing a processor really isn't so daunting. I had no idea how to even disasemble a laptop, but some NBR questions and some youtube tutorials later, I think I'm as prepped as I'll ever be.

The only thing you should worry about is compatibility. I know (knew?) almost nothing about what processor would fit where. But that's what the more knowledgable guys are here for.

    Hers your solution:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366615&type=product&id=1218092150740

and you either buy a 2nd or better a battery with the rest of the budget cash at around $180.

Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 @2.5ghz (overclocks to like 2.8 Ghz or something)
    6GB of RAM
    Geforce GTX 260M
    500GB HDD (5400RMP :/)

Edit: Then again I think you're limited to an 8 cell battery with this laptop, so buying a 2nd battery might be the only option. :(
