-If you're comfortable with doing so, you can replace the CPU with a newer, faster one. It's much cheaper if you know where to look. (Beware the ES models). If not, you can always perform a safe overclock. I've hit 2.4 GHz while simultaneously undervolting.

-Like the CPU, the GPU can be "overclocked" back to standard speeds. With the customization of nTools, you can even have it start when you sign on.

-While nice, I don't think the backpack and stick count as extreme stripping. I mean, they're nice to have, but I'd think the processor would count as stripping. But you can correct the processor issue, so there's that. For $999, that's a good trade-off.

-It is extremely easy to add your own, second, hard drive. Also, it doesn't not affect warranty if you decide to do so.

Well, definitely this one. However, if you feel comfortable modifying your computer, this works to your advantage. You won't think to yourself "Damn, I just wasted $200+ when I changed out my CPU."

Well, some overcast weather ruined my eclipse viewing,so I'm back. Thanks for the reply,Forge.Any heads up about the battery?Should I go external or buy a 2nd ASUS 9-cell?Is there any external compatible model for the G51?

Answering Ur post,I've done some tinkering on laptops before, but mainly older models, and I've never touched the CPU.I'm following your G51 thread to see what Ur tinkering gives, but U're right,I can still overclock. The only problem with that is the extra purchase of a notebook cooler I will have to make to be 100% comfortable with overclocking the CPU and GPU.But I'd guess it's an acceptable expense given the money saved on the BB model. It has to be said,my 2 previous laptops crapped out on me several times because of the overheating killing some components, and the warranty was well appreciated in both case,as I had to use it a combined 5 times...

Yeah,of course I can add an HDD on my own,but thanks for clearing my doubts about the warranty, that's why I found the lack of option annoying. If it doesn't ruin the warranty, then it's not a problem.

I disagree regarding the stripping:stripping off a costly proc for a weaker one is par-for-course in a price reduction effort,in my book.Removing peculiar goodies like the sticks and the bag is extreme because I don't see where it helps in reducing the price THAT much.At least, that's what I think. It seems U indirectly confirm it's not there in the BB version...Shucks.

Anyway,as of now,I think I'll still be watching before making a choice.Perhaps an in-between version will come out, with ASUS Global warranty("B*stardized" got cut out),white finish, all the goodies there, but with the same screen resolution as the BB model and some of the other stripping to keep cost down. We'll see. Thanks for the answer.

Is the GTX 260 in the RX05 really under-clocked relative to the A1 version?

Same clock speeds, just a core 2 quad Cpu processor, higher Rez monitor, 2x320 GB harddrives and I believe a black outer shell instead of white (according to some people who've seen websites)

    I want mine now... >.<

No, both are underclocked in respect to a standard GTX 260M but it is very easy to overclock them back to standard clocks.

Thanks for answering one of my questions:all G51s have an underclocked GPU,so it isn't really a con for the BB version.Anyway,as U said and showed in your guide, everything can be put back to normal with some tinkering.I'd guess some extra cooling will be required though... Do U have some answers re:the batt?

I have no idea about external batteries. To be the absolute safest, I'd say stick with buying another standard Asus one.

Just curious about the pricing schemes of upgrades on reseller websites...for example the processor upgrades. The prices include the cost of the processor+labor, but do we get the old processor back, or do they keep it? If they keep the old components after upgrade, then why do they charge so much?

Yeah,I did some more research, and it seems there's no universal battery around which can handle the required 120W.All of them seem to max out at 90.Problem is,having to buy an additional ASUS battery all but rules out the BB model,at least for now...Only Gentech and Xotic offer the option(as far as I know).Oh well,we'll see.Just hope some people get their hands on the A1 and give us some reviews and answer a few questions(cooling, possibility to have the White shell, etc.)to help us in our purchase project.

I have a G51 and opened it for the first time today. I loaded Crysis and played only to the first save. It seemed to run fine. I decided to do a performance check using the sytem tools in the control panel. I clicked to run the scan. It ran the program but did not give a score. I tried several times but nothing. I then went advanced tools for a system health check. All areas were rated as very poor with red flags.I checked the display at BB and all is fine with a score of 5. I called Asus and they are going to have a tech get back to me.
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks

Well, you're running nearly one gigahertz higher than the highest clock anyone else has gotten. If you didn't get a ridiculous score I'd have to go to your house and punch you.

    No offense or anything.

Has anyone tried upgrading the display on BB G51?
I would love this laptop with CPU/Display upgrade.

    I am not looking for a full-hd.
There is a game that I play which has to run with at least 800 vertical pixels.

The G50 dissassembly guide is for a different model, but when I opened up my computer to install my [currently incompatible] CPU, it's not all that much different. Have you ever modified a laptop before?

Up to this point I have never opened one up, and I must say it's a lot easier than it looks. You only have to unscrew the bottom panel to gain access to all the things you might want to modify.

It'll void your warranty, though. Granted, my sticked looks like it hasn't been touched and still under warranty, but I don't know what to look for.

As forge said, it was rather simple to remove the CPU. Just make sure you apply Arctic Silver 5 or another cpu paste putting it back on!

To be honest, game performance is not that much better. OC the stock processor and youll be happy! I just had some cash to blow lol.

It's really up to you. If you like your warranty and you're using this mainly for games, just stick with overclocking/undervolting with a laptop cooler.

If you don't like to overclock all the time, a new processor isn't hard to install.

But if I were me, which is a silly qualifer since I already am me, no if about it, I'd go for a new processor. That's because I'm casually interested in 3DMark bragging rights.

Make sure to buy good thermal paste like skii said. Arctic Silver 5 is probably the best you can get at a good price. Also, it doesn't hurt to get thermal paste emulsifier/remover.

I can try more in-depth steps, but only if you're pretty sure.

    @masterwares

idle temps are in low 30's with the T9800, max temps are just above 70. That was lower than my P7350

    @apt2l

Got it from eBay, ~300. I had been looking for a while, and finally saw one that looked decent.

Thanks. That was the problem. There was a disk in with the recovery disk with the drivers. I am surprised the drivers were not installed with the operating system. The computer did not come with alot of instructions and the tech did not call as told he would. No big surprise there.
I see a lot of talk about the temp of the GPU. Is there a systems tool to check that or is it a seperate program that needs to be added? I have looked for it but I haven't seen it. I also checked the Nvidia control panel.

and if the a1 has a black shell with the blue it is ugly and im not buying it. :D

maybe, could i buy the bb version then plug in my g50 cpu and hhd into the g51? i think i would like it better that way...
also, i really like the a1, but might w8 for an a2 seeing as best buy has an alienware with dual gpus for 400 more, any chance of this with asus g51?

I have a MX518 mouse with docuement flip. On my old small HP I could do a flip during Far Cry and others and check mail or the web then return to the game. On the 51 the doc flip works but not in game mode with any of the games that worked on my old HP. The doc flip on the keyboard will not work on the games either. Could this have anything to due with the 64 bit sys?

So can you answer my question? Thanks.

Also, just posting some game results:

    1. Star Wars KOTOR - High Everything, game plays with no stutter.
    2. Counterstrike Source - High Everything, 200 fps +
    3. Half-life 2
    4. Half-life 2: ep1 - High Everything, game plays fluently.
    5. Half-life 2: ep2
    6. Team Fortress 2: - Medium High Settings, 30-120 fps, 30 in firefights. Had to turn AA off, as well as shadows.

I've played all these games for at least 2-4 hours at a time, and the system is very stable.

Never used this flip thing but in general you can use alt+tab to switch to a open application from a game then use alt+tab to get back to the game.
If the game does not go back to fullscreen you can try alt+enter to make it full screen. F11 can also make some apps full screen but I never tried on games.

The temps maxes out at around 90C. It reaches temps close to that fairly quickly but then it just stays there and doesn't go up any higher.
