I'm actually looking at this one right here:

    http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMFSS...ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1248666004&sr=1-4

Price is a little higher and the specs look a lot faster. Plus I hear good things about the Corsair SSDs from what I've been reading.

    lol

That's a commonly repeated myth so I don't hold sentry at fault for repeating it. Don't believe the rehashed nonsense, go read up on it for yourself (from a reliable source).

The GTX260 is faster though, he's right about that. Computer gaming just needs a lot more resources than an optimized, standardized, gaming centered platform.

thanks sentry for that 'rehashed' 'fact' , it's good to know that at least gaming wise, the basic G51 configuration delivers better than the populous console crowd.. That should be enough for the moment to kick (and get my kicked) in SF4 online (btw add me, gamertag: kickers1979 ;) )

eye candies get really pricey if you want your system/rig to deliver more of them, perhaps we didn't have enough candies when we were kids, lol.

while my mouth foams now for an AW, i'll consider to get that for my NEXT rig.. or maybe a gaming desktop while hoping to keep my asus (said I was hoping i can get TWO YEARS out of this G51, grrrr)

Geez, contentment :) is really hard to get by for us people, i wonder where can we buy that lol

Anyone have any idea why the alt +tab function would stop working while playing a game? Works fine for other apps but not in and out of games.
It worked last week but not now.
I just discovered that it will not change from game to desktop but you must have another app open and it will swicth back and forth to and from that and the game. You can ,however, switch from any app but a game between it and a desktop. Is this normal or does my machine act differently. The reason I am asking is that I did not think this was the case last week and it can still be returned if it is not as it should be.Thanks

Well...some games have spotty alt-tab functionality. Alot of newer games may have issues with it like freezing up after maximizing the game again or crashing so I wouldn't get too concerned about it in regards to gaming unless alt-tab doesn't work with normal applications like web browser.

Even then, it points to a software issue that is probably easily fixed and not anything to justify a return considering the 15% restocking fee.

So... I bailed. After all that...I just returned my G51 to best buy for a full refund and ordered an AW M17 with 2x 1GB 4850's in CF. I ordered it with a 160GB HDD, 2GB DDR3, a back lit keyboard, P8400 2.26GHz, and an 5300 wifi card. I got it for $1,502.53 shipped/no tax so a pretty nice deal. :) I've got a 320GB drive laying around that I can replace the 160GB with, and my 64GB SSD for the OS/games. I'm also just gonna throw this X9100 EE in it for now and in a few months I'll grab a QX9300. I'm also ordering a 4GB's of DDR3 from newegg for it...hmmm...$60 @ newegg or $200 at alienware... Man that's a tough one. :D I really liked the G51VX...especially for $999$1,083 after tax) but I feel like for me the M17 is a better option...especially since the 4800 series finally showed up in it...and they're 1GB 4850's instead of 512MB's which is what kept me away from the MSI notebook w/4850.

Thanks, it works fine with the browser and great with games as long as any other program is open. I opened HW Monitor while Crysis was running and discovered that the fan switched on at 88 C. All seems to be fine. Temp dropped to 83 quickly.

Well, alt-tab is used for switching between programs so if you have no other programs running, you can't really expect it to work really well can you?

To get to the desktop, it would be better to just ctrl-alt-delete and go through the task manager, which should work in 99% of the cases.

I'm kidding. When you get the M17, make sure you stay around this board so we can see how the two compare.

And don't go shopping for a QX9300 too soon. Something might come up.

Ok, what do the GPU numbers mean? Because that has always been what has gotten me.

In case you don't realize by my two consecutive posts, I'm gradually reading through the forum and commenting as I go. I really want this laptop, and I'm learning everything I can about it.

The way Tev has them formatted, they stand for core, memory, and shader clocks, respectively.

Can't really tell you in any technical detail, but suffice it to say that they're all part of what makes a GPU tick.

Like Forge said, they stand for core, memory, and shader clocks. Core clock is the GPU portion and thats the frequency it runs at. Memory is the frequency of the vRAM. and Shaders is pretty self explanatory; they're the frequency of the shaders.

It really really depends on the usage. If you just browse the web and watch movies, it might never fail but if you do heavy gaming, it might do so in 4 years or something like that.

You can't really predict since there is a whole host of factors.

Anyways, guys, I'm working on a pretty comprehensive analysis of the G51's temperature "problem" and I've found some pretty interesting things so far. I just need a G50's log file from GPU-Z while playing intensive games and I'll finish it.

Core is the meat and potatoes of your overclock. Shader is next important and memory is last.

If you want to read a really interesting article about the performance benefits of each, look at this: GTX 275 Overclock Scaling: Core or Memory or Shader?. It's a GTX 275, so it's might react different than your G92b cards.

    ....

" Second: The G71GX's performance with its Geforce GTX 260M is about 15% lower than the performance of the theoretically equally strong Radeon HD4850 in comparable notebooks, such as the MSI GT725"

I'm flabbergasted. I would NEVER have expected 15%...

I wasn't too shocked by the 15% difference and didnt think the GTX260m was as strong as the mobile 4850.

Meh, the gtx260m is STILL top of the line in the 15'' notebook category. My last laptop was a 17'' dell (inspiron 9400). I'm tired of carrying that much weight, and want something a wee bit lighter.

260M is still top of the line, I'd like to know what systems those comparisons were done with.

The 260 allows for better overclocks, too.

does the msi barebones 627 or the predecessor of the 725 have a 4850 or older radeon that compares to the gtx260? because im sitting here with a t9300 and a dead asus g1s board( dead 8600 gt of course damn you nvidia) Im kinda wary that nvidia might have some dying cards in the future, maybe even the gtx 260 or 280. 2 years? maybe even less. Think about it, so they can make people buy new laptops every 2 years. because if im right nvidia didnt really loose any money from their bad batch compared to the millions in new laptop sales and im on the list for a new laptop. so as much as i liked nvidia before im thinking ati.

Decent drivers? Two of my friends have "jumped ship" to ATI (one from 8800GT to HD4890; the other 9400GT to HD4670). Neither have complained one bit about drivers.

I don't know where this ATI-hating stems from....

    ~Ibrahim~

P.S. I know this is an isolated example, but no review site (all which CONSTATLY test ATI hardware, thus ATI drivers) has ever mentioned issues with the Catalyst set. And, to boot, ATI guarantees new drivers every single month.

P.P.S. GT725 is out...but it's being replaced with the GT729. If you care enough about either, please don't post here about it. There is a dedicated MSI forum for that.

We have no idea, since no one has the A1 yet.

But since it has two hard drives and a higher TDP quad, it will probably run a little warmer than the RX05.

    Thats a pretty vague question.

Do you want the temps of the CPU or GPU or both. More important is what settings in WOW would you be referring too...Full Eye Candy, Some, None. Also running around in level 1 areas killing wolves or a full on RAID with lots of friends. All these things will effect your temps as you make the card work harder.

I know that the 2.0 Duo version plays WAR (a MMO) for hours with full eye candy during scenerios (20 people) and the GPU averaged around the high 60s with a peak in the high 70s. The CPU (OC'd via Power4gear) was in the low 60s.

Alright, I'm getting ready to buy this in preparation for when I pick up the G51 this week...

    http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMFSS...ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1248918639&sr=1-4

What do you guys think, good choice?

And how much should I really worry about the "limited write" issue that the SSDs supposedly have? Would it really cut the life of the drive by that much, or would it last me perfectly fine for the next couple of years?

I plan to just keep the operating system and game files on there, and leave all files like temp. internet files, my music and pictures, and other things that will constantly fill up and have to be cleared off on the 320Gb 7200rpm drive.

From what I have been reading, they both have the same controllers, same read/write speed, etc, etc...So it was kind of a flip of the coin for me(and the Corsair won on price, but barely any difference)...do you know if there is a difference between the memory controllers of the Torqx and the Extreme series?

EDIT: The only real difference I see is the "MTBF" on the Torqx is 2,500,000+ hours, and on the Corsair it's 1,000,000 hours...I have no idea what kind of difference that could possibly make...plus I can get a rebate from amazon that makes the prices practically the same...I usually trust Corsair a little more as far as memory goes, considering the brand name, but if no one has any reason not to trust Patriot, I might just hop on it.

EDIT2: Tiger Direct supposedly has it for about 235, so I might stop by td tomorrow and see if they have it at my local store...

After seeing the A1 in action, and writing to XoticPC and GenTech about spare batteries(I would have taken the A1 if it was possible to get it with multiple batteries, with XoticPC it seems U're limited to one additional 9-cell per laptop purchase, while I need at least 2,and no answer from GenTech as of now)I'm more and more leaning toward the RX05.I was totally underwhelmed by the A1's look... And I really think the 600+$ premium is just for an additional HDD that can be purchased later,a FHD screen I find useless on a 15" lappie,an ugly look and an underwhelming Quad Core which for me is exactly the same as the P7350,because what I do on my comp doesn't require 4 cores.I'll consider Quads(and better ones at that than this Q9000)when more apps and games are optimized for it.Hell,I'm still living on my desktop's E6600 bought in 2006 when the C2Ds came out,and I don't feel any need whatsoever to upgrade it as of now, while everything else around it has levelled up.So,all these additions don't justify the 600+$ IMHO.The 2 things really slowing me regarding the RX-05 were BB's b*stardized warranty and the lack of additional batteries.

To date,I'm not seeing anybody complaining their G51 is dead because of too much overheating.Of course, nobody has owned this laptop for more than 6 months, but still...Nonetheless,to be on the safe side,I want to know the opinion of those using it with a cooler:is the cooler REALLY necessary? If yes, which one would U recommend for the G51?Is it possible to keep the temp honest without a cooler, just by using Tevaz's guide? Are there people using it without a cooler and overclocking it without problems?I'm asking because I'll be with a poor warranty if I go with BB's model,as I live outside the US.I don't want to be left stranded with a defective laptop after 6 months, with limited possibility of getting it fixed. If I don't need to worry about malfunctions, the warranty doesn't hold so much importance. So,better buy this cooler,or not really necessary? If yes, which one?

Regarding the 9-cell batteries, does anyone know where to find them sold separately?I really need more than one.If there's no place to obtain them,i'll be in a very difficult position regarding A1 vs RX05...

Edit:just checked my inbox,XoticPc brought some correction,it seems it is finally possible to get multiple batteries when ordering with them.it's a huge bonus for the A1(not to say the ONLY one...)but my questions still hold, specially the 1st one, even though I'll be getting ASUS' Global Warranty with the A1.

I would wait a few days for them to start showing up and go with one of the new Intel X25 G2s. The price on that 80GB is awesome for argueably the best SSD.

Seems that sequential write is the only weak-point of the drive, but I don't really write large files often at all...I'm using it mostly for the read performance. The only time I'm going to be writing on it for the most part is for the initial OS install, and for game installs.

Plus its cheaper per GB and much better read performance than every other drive I've looked at, same price as both the Torqx and Extreme and I get 16 more gb! I might just wait a week and pick this one up...Thanks for the heads up!
