    NP,

Pay attention to the random write and read speeds of an SSD as that is what makes the Intel X25s amazing in comparision to the others.

Yeah, the random read is what I will be using most, just for putting up files, searches, and applications...It will probably be only like a half-second difference between the other SSDs, but I cant argue with that, especially with more space for the same price. The only time I really do a lot of large transactions is with my music folders, and that I'm keeping on the 320GB 7200rpm HDD anyway.

God damnit, that just threw me completely off!!!!

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220576

This one just caught my eye!!! This really sucks, I'm going to have to do a lot more thinking now...

    Hmm,

So for $300 more than the BB model you get 1 more year of reg warranty, 1 year of Opps I broke it protection, a stronger CPU and a much much better screen, not to mention no upfront tax (sorry CA). Did I miss anything?

I wonder if they offer the free Win7 Upgrade as well.

Also I take it that the screen is not LED backlight and it still has the chicklet backlighted keyboard?

Haha yeah it looks pretty appealing with the GTX 260m -- what I don't like is the 7.26 lb weight... I'd like my laptop to be pretty mobile since I'll be taking it around with me on battery all the time.

Yeah, I like the white one better, but that cover looks REALLY good in person. At least to me. It's okay, I had a hard time convincing my grandmother to go anywhere above $700 for my brother, so I lucked out when I got the G51-RX05 for him. Haha.

I am using the HWMonitor and have noticed that the CPU temp for the #1 core runs consistantly higher than #0. The max value today is 50 vs 54 and currently the vaue is 44 & 53. I am just curious what others are seeing and if this normal.
    Thanks

When dealing with released software, yes, but I do middleware for a living and having to work around ATI driver bugs is a common thing. A friend of mine who used to work for the guys who made City of Heroes said they had to explicitly check for ATI driver bugs with a version-indexed table. Heck, even the mighty Carmack once said (paraphrased) how when he finds a bug on nvidia's drivers he checks his code, with ATI he assumes theirs is to blame. ATI has an attitude of doing the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM necessary to get the driver past WHQL and barely anything more. Long developer rant, I know, but had to be said. By the time any significant sw is released they run traces and optimize paths, etc, but development on ATI is hell unless you use the WHQL-tested D3D paths.

Now that I look at it, the price jump does seem odd. Using a Sager on XoticPC as a model, the jump from P8700 to T9600 only +$130.

    Maybe we're missing something.

hello and good day I hope any one could help me I have 3 question

1.) my wife recently bought me a g51 @ bestbuy she won't be home till next week but I'm quite curious about the driver, do I need to first install the driver that comes with the g51 cd driver or is it pre installed since it has a vista os? and just needs an update when a new driver is release.

2.) Second question would be upon checking asus support download site I saw nvidia vga driver and nvidia graphics driver do I need to install both of them or just the nvidia vga driver don't know if it's the same but the vga driver is a higher version. If my first question answer's "yes I still need to install the driver that comes with g51"

    Version V7.15.11.7988 NVIDIA VGA Driver
    Version V7.15.11.7953 nVidia Graphics Driver

3.) And my last question is if an updated driver let's say the graphics driver comes do I need to uninstall the old driver before installing the new one or is it ok just to install the new one without touching the old one.

Thank you so much for your help sorry just a newbie here.

    1. the drivers are pre-installed so there is no need to install them at 1st boot. just update them from the asus site.

    2. vga is the latest one (vga and graphics drivers are the same).

3.all you need to do is just uninstall the current ones you have and download the newer ones from, asus; laptopvideo2go; or nvidia.

    Short: normal.

Long: Very few things are multi-threaded today. So the CPU which takes more work (your first core) will make more heat.

Thanks, just making sure all is as it should be while still in the return period. I've had way too many notebooks die before I thought they should.
The HP I am replacing is showing A GPU resting temp at 91 to 96. It's no wonder it's crashing. I didn't realize that until I had the monitor. FYI the HP is an AMD dual with G force 6150. less than 2 yrs.

You don't have to update the drivers or anything like that but doing so may give you performance boosts.

Nvidia always recommends laptop owners to download drivers from their manufacturers to make sure you don't blame them if anything goes wrong but most manufacturer drivers are horribly outdated. The best place to go for Nvidia drivers is laptopvideo2go. Download the driver you need there, uninstall your old one, go to safe mode and run driver sweeper, install your new driver, and you're good to go.

There are Dox drivers which optimize performance slightly bit more and the installation is basically the same. The download link for those drivers are in my guide (look at signature)

I believe you...but I don't believe 90C idle and this laptop should leave the manufacturer...so much reports for high temperatures, I'm starting to think it's really what's happening :D Come on, I know you'll buy a G51 as I will too :)

This sounds like thermal sensor issue or something, 120C is somehow unbelievable...

My post was in response to ikjadoon's quote:

"P.S. What's the betting someone will quote this message, thinking I'm talking about the G51, and then go on a rant about ASUS? "

It was tongue-in-cheek humor. I already have THREE G51s from Best Buy that I have set up in a LAN to test some code I'm working on, and I'm ordering an A1 myself form Xotic soon :)

    The G51 isn't 90ºC at idle...

And you do realize that the 120ºC was not for a G51 right? It was for some computer with a 8600M.

I have a question, the high performance mode ups the clock speed to 2.0 Ghz right? If I leave the cpu on that speed forever, will the laptop hardware still last for 4 + years, or will the cpu not be able to handle the high speed for that long before burning out?

In other words, is the cpu weak, or can it handle the high speeds for over a very long time.. 1.7 Ghz is just too slow, my old desktop was faster..

The CPU's standard speed is 2.0 GHz. It's going to hurt the processor to be running at what it's supposed to be running.

Oh, you mean the overclock. I thought you meant the power option.

The overclock is a piddling 7.5% increase, about 2.15 GHz. It's (nominally) not going to hurt anything

Celeron processors are not even close to being comparable to C2D processors. A 2.5GHz Pentium would be less than 1/4 as fast as a 2.5GHz C2D.

Can your desktop even support Core 2 Duos?

Bah yeah, my good old Pentium 4 is still kicking at 3.2Ghz but an Atom can probably even beat it in terms of power.

Basically, the MHz race ended ever since Pentium 4 was a massive failure so it can only really be used within the same architecture/generation of CPUs.

We really need a good bar chart which shows a general idea of how processors compare at comparable clock speeds...Its really complicated to explain the difference between a similarly clocked Pentium, Celeron, Centrino, and Core 2 Duo, and also the AMD processors to customers at Best Buy who keep wondering the difference...

Well another 3+ hour session online (Warhammer Online) with all the eye candy turned on doing mass player v. player running it through an external monitor at 1920x1080p and the GPU never hit better than 73C. It ran about average in the low/mid 60s.

What surprises me the most is that the other night I did the same thing but played on the G71VX model and the GPU peaked at 81C and ran on average in the low 70s.

The smaller G51VX actually keeps the GTX260 cooler than the G71VX even with its bigger chassis.

So I love my new asus laptop but was wondering is the cpu easily changed. I was told cpus are sauterd into the mother board and cannot be upgraded but I have seen aplications on youtube of people upgrading there laptops didn't look all that hard I have built several desktops and replaced gobs and gobs of ram. I saw on one of my goolge serches that the processor is accesable from the bottom of the laptop and that there are only 2 ram slots so to upgrade to 8 megs of ram I am asuming you need 2 4 Gig sticks to get there. Anyone tinker yet

lol i thought you said sautéed (one tasty motherboard). the word youre looking for is "soldered" and no it is the gpu that is most of the time soldered onto the motherboard. Changing the cpu is relatively easy but note that it will void your warranty.

So I finally got my G51 (BestBuy)!! :D

2 hours of Crysis (64 bit, DX10) very high, native res, average 21fps, max temp 92C but it stayed at 89 almost all the time.

3 hours of COD4 all high, Antialiasing 4x, dont know the fps but probably very high because it looks amazing, native res, max temp 88C but it was at 82 almost all the time.

All of this using a Belkin Cooling Pad, my ambient temp was around 28C, with DOX drivers 185.85 and no OC.

I dont think this temps are bad at all.

Alright, so my supervisor today told me that the G51 is going back on sale to $999.99 tomorrow, so that should last at least all week!

Also, anyone who picked it up for the $1049.99 should be able to go back to your Best Buy and get that 50 bucks back since we price-match within the return policy!

So my department is in a competition for whoever can sell the most "full packages," basically everything from Geek Squad services, to Black Tie, to subscription software like anti-virus, etc, and I just found that out today, and apparently I'm already in the lead even though I didn't know we were in a competition...lol

But the winner in a couple days is going to win a $50 gift card, and the only guy who was supposedly my competition flew to Brazil the other day and wont be back for the next few days so supposedly I'm set to win...so this gift card along with the other $50 dollar gift card I won at a training session gives me $100 worth of free gift cards to spend on the RX05...so yeah, if I win it I'm going to be pretty much 100% on the RX05...this job has some nice perks...;P

Chances are not, that price is with hardly any mark-up, so any less and they will be losing money for each one they sell...That price is pretty much the sale price, and its a good price, so I wouldn't wait for any lower. If you pick it up, try and do it this week before it pops back up, otherwise you're gonna have to haggle somehow to lower it back.

Lucky me... I bit the bullet and just ordered the RX05 on BestBuy :( ... My order hasn't been processed yet,but can U tell me if this price-matching thingy is feasible on international credit cards, and if yes how to do it?I would like to have that 50$ cashback...
