How is the overall build quality on the 17" XPS? Materials used, fit and finish, etc. When you pick it up from the corner does it feel solid?

Mitchell2.24v Could you please also comment on the noise&fan work of the new XPS?. And does it have the high pitched noise, which is now unfortunately quite common among different models/manufacturers ;/.

Answered by the reviewer in the comments:

"Maybe HWMonitor apparently doesn't know about the i5-460M. It's clocked at the same base clock as the 540M, but the 540M has higher Turbo modes. CPU-Z shows the correct CPU, as does Astra32, but I don't know how HWMonitor identifies CPUs."

I haven't noticed Anandtech getting worse. Seems like a pretty solid review to me.

    Question:

The new XPS has a mini displayport and an HDMI 1.4 port. The question is, can these two be used independently to run two external monitors at the same time, or is it an either-or thing?

Thanks, i've been wondering about that.

Also, can you give us your opinion on the quality of the screen? The Anandtech review of the 1080p display in the XPS15 has me jealous, and more than a little worried that I will be disappointed in the display in the 17.

Got XPS 15 with i7 740 & GT435. I'm liking the build quality a lot switching from acer 5920g. It is fast, hd video playback with no stuttering, which is probably not surprising. Didn't have a chance to test anything more demanding.

It's got the HDD LED at the back, which might be a bit annoying, but I can live with that.

Fan does not really come on when idling. Let's wait for the summer days.

So far so good and seems it's a good lappy.

When installing software the fan was working but not as loud as my old 5920g. The heat is noticeable on the left side, where the fan and radiator are located you can also feel it on the hand rest & keyboard.

Battery life: 2.5-3h listening to music, watching videos, browsing and idling. There was also a few restarts.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already, but I was wondering if there was any throttling at all on these laptops? has anyone tried ThrottleStop for monitoring purposes?

Dell chat (unreliable, most of the time) claims that it will support two separate external monitors through the two ports but that if you are using the internal at the same time it has to be a clone of one of them. I don't know how true that is.

I also returned my Envy 17, it has great hardware but the heat output and poor battery life was annoying. I also had the gaps and wobble problem that others have been complaining about.

If you have SSDs, then the heating is reduced minimally, plus I've heard a cooler can work wonders. However, the system still gets a bit hot (or so I've heard), but it's much better than before. There are no more gaps at all.

16%? The most we get with our EPP code is 12% and that's only for purchases over $1500 with a 3 year warranty purchase. I'd kill for 16%. Maybe the EPP varies from site to site ? Sweet deal.

Mitchell, I am also planning to buy a XPS. I wanted to know how is the heating at keyboard and at palm rest. The reason I am switching my current laptop (Presario) is excessive heating.

I have not played any games yet, so I don't know how it handles those, but an hour of Furmark didn't get my keyboard and palmrest hot at all. During regular work (which stresses the CPU quite a bit in my case, and the GPU a little) the palmrest and keyboard only get slightly warm.

I'm really impressed with the cooling on this system. I cannot really compare it to the M17x as that was a different beast, but it is better than the 1645, or the Studio 17 I had.

3DMark06 isn't very demanding, it shouldn't be heating the GPU up to 80C after only one hour. That's a lot hotter than the ATI 5xxx series cards.

    From the Anandtech review:

"....in the next couple of months Intel's Sandy Bridge will shake things up. Dell is almost certain to revise the current XPS lineup to move to Sandy Bridge, but unfortunately that will require more than simply swapping CPUs. Sandy Bridge will require a new chipset and socket, which means a new motherboard. "

Anyone care to predict when SB is likely to be offered by Dell for the XPS line (bearing in mind they've just shipped)?

    Jan, Feb?

Does anyone know, if it is the exact same battery for both 15" and 17" laptop? I'm thinking about getting the L701x with 9-cell battery for myself and the L501x with 6-cell battery for my wife. I wonder if we could exchange our batteries and share the 9-cell.

That's a good question. My 9-cell (15") says "TYPE R795X Rating 11.1V Capacity 90Wh" If anyone can confirm it's the same on a 17", then you would have your answer.
