nerdtalker, i have the same dates as you, same date ordered etc, and mine is still in pre-production as well... not sure why or if there is a hold up.

On another note the backpack that was included (only on the 27th on the Canadian site as lorax and i have mentioned in other posts) was delivered today, although i will need to wait until i get home to actually see it.

Anyone going to try Vista 64-bit? I know the M1730 supports it (hardware-wise); I do not think Dell supports it yet (OS-wise). It appears they might later since some device drivers are showing up.

    Please I need advise

If I have the opportunity to buy this machine now, is there any point in waiting for a better gpu to be realesed? (the infamous 8800??) The 3D 06 mark is only beaten by 7950 GTX Sli. I spoken to a Dell supplyer and he said that it isn`t certain that the XPS 1730 can be uppgraded, it depends on heat issues and some other things I didn`t understand... So buy now while there is still a chance that I would get it before christmas, or wait on a rewiew and become last in a big purchase queue.. :(

I seriously doubt that the 8800 is going to be released for at least a couple more months. New technology is in general 6-12 months off, so arguably if you wait the next best thing will be the quad-core notebook CPUs that are going to start emerging (not the Sager/Clevo models with desktop quad cores, mind you, but mobile CPUs with 4 cores).

I obviously didn't think it was worth it to wait any longer. I doubt Nvidia is going to hurry to get another product to market considering that they've literally just now launched the 8700, as well. That's just how things go.

I personally think the 8800's will be out quite soon, especially with the high demand from mobile gamers.

Also, did anyone consider that perhaps ATI will surprise us all and release a massively powerful mobile card? (Didn't think so :D)

The age of dedicated sound is pretty much almost over. Anandtech did a nice job covering that in this article.

Vista's sound system is just setup so that all sound processing is done onboard, and given how powerful CPUs are, the performance hit is easily marginalized. Honestly, it's one less thing to go wrong.

I'm all for better sounding audio (I own an Audigy 2 ZS notebook and the X-Fi Gamer for my desktop), but anandtech is right, dedicated audio is increasingly the exception to the rule. Plus, the notebook is already so huge, do you really want it to be even bigger? If you really desire dedicated sound, go spring for Creative's express-card Audigy 2 ZS notebook replacement. :D

I used a different technique to help me get it faster though. I have owned 3 XPS systems my last one purchased being the XPS 600 Desktop. It was a alright system, but had many issues with it. When I found I could order the XPS m1730 I said to Dell to talk to a manager. First off I had trouble getting my 12% off for working for the Government. Spent 3 hours on the phone ordering it, and them trying not to give me my discount. What I did though in agreement to me ordering this system I told them to expedite it. Which basically means bump it up to first priorty on the manufacturing part of it. My expected date to get it is October 22, but I should hopefull recieve it once my parts come in. Everyone who ordered one, can't even get one made for almost a month since they don't have major parts of the system in stock.
If anyone has any questions I could probably answer them.

Funny thing that was my systems end price. THATS WITH THE 12% off I HAD.

Let me put it this way. Some people love to game, so they need the best graphics cards they can get. In this case, SLI 8700M GT. Some people are audiophiles, etc., they too would like to have their needs fufilled. Intel HD is still lacking compared to a high-quality dedicated desktop sound cards, in every aspect: input, output, decoding, quality, speed.

I spoke to Alienware about a 9750 before i ordered my 1730 I don't know about the states but in the UK expected shipping on a 9750 was end of November!!! there is over a 28 day wait for the 1900x1200 screen and I was told they are having problems with parts. i don't think my expected date of Oct 22nd was to bad.

Srry to interupt into a XPS M1730 Owners Lounge even though i havent even placed my xps ordere yet. So my comment here that i want to make is about the worthfulness or the worthlessness of the AGEIA PhysX PPU. I live in Japan and today was its release. I was looking through the configuration and noticed that i was able to disable or enable the PhyX driver.
Im sure that i am going to by this machine but i was wonderin if a AGEIA would be worthy cuz there is a 200 bux difference whethere selecting and not selecting.
At first, i was thinkin of not selecting but considering of the future games and my favorite series title Unreal Tournament 3, it sounded to me it was worthy for adding into the system.
    What do you guys think?

And so once Vista becomes a standard for everyone and it is realized that a dedicated soundcard is no longer a necessity, will Creative just leave the soundcard business?

If anyone is interested, the backpack i received with my order is the same one that came with the M1710 (i believe)... now if my laptop would get out of the pre production phase i would have a reason to use it!

I find it amusing how fast this page is growing considering there are so many that would never get this over a Clevo or Alienware(Dell).

A thought though. If Canadian prices are well above US, I would definitely make a call and use that as a bargaining chip as the price difference should reflect the shape of the dollar. It is a very viable argument on getting a reduction from list.

When I ordered my blue XPS 1730 I had my choice of backpack or another bag also extra drive thrown in plus I received $200 discount which I did not realise I was getting as it only showed in the final total.

I wish the colour options included pink though :)

I didn't find the pricing that bad really considering the performance of this machine.
    Before Tax Amount
    AUD 2,229.00 GST - AUST - 10 % AUD 224.90
    Currency : Australian Dollar
    TOTAL
    AUD 2,473.90

I'm not a very patient person. When I buy something I want it yesterday, lol so I hope I don't have to wait too long before it gets out of manufacturing. My EDD was yesterday but has been changed to the 16th Oct which Dell told me was due to a parts shortage.
Oh well will try the waiting patiently thingy and see what happens. :D

While I don't actually own a M1730 at the moment, I have read multiple reviews, all of whom report the fan noise to be noticeable, however basically unobtrusive.

I'm going to have to say that it really isn't productive at all to speculate about fan noise from the XPS M1730 until at least one of us has it.

That being said, I don't think it could possibly be that intrusive. The whole back is pretty much one gigantic heatsink that spans the entire length of the notebook. I can't imagine it being much more than the sound noise of any of the other similar-form-factor gamer notebooks from Clevo or Alienware.

and most of the posts at the beginning were NON owners wondering why anyone would want to be owners. I think a moderated owner forum where you have to supply your service tag or copy of your purchase invoice should be required to post. Now, that would be an 'owner's lounge', rather than a 'place where owners can be hassled and annoyed by non-owners and anti-M1730 / anti-Dell trolls.'

You know those "first class" lounges at airports? They're nice BECAUSE they're exclusive. I would be cool to have a forum where only owners could post, and maybe a moderator would accept questions from non-owners and post the sensible ones for the owners to discuss or comment on, then the non-owners could read and learn.

Ok, call me elitist... or call me someone who wants to communicate with other ACTUAL owners.

I completely agree with you that a new thread with a fresh start needs to be made in order to combat with those who use this thread as a place to pick on the M1730 that we owners want to share our thoughts and opinions on. Please see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=176522. Let this thread become the updated area for all current (and future) XPS M1730 owners (and prospectable owners).

Clearly there is someone in this forum whoes immaturity and ignorance goes as far as to create "his own" lounge after seeking out what he labels a flaw in this one.

Well, I'll just revise what this lounge is for: Discussion of the M1730... I can't see what else it could be.

How could you make an "official" lounge for only positive conversation? "Hi, I like my M1730"... "Me too"... "Uh... yes, I third that"... "Me too"... "That's good"... * Inside Someone's Head*: "Gosh, I came on these forums to solve a problem with my M1730, but since that's classified as negative, I guess I should leave"

DellFan24, when a product is made, there are PROS AND CONS. With the Dell M1730, there are both. If you choose to ignore the cons, you are biased and wasting your times in these forums. When people talk about a product, they tend to want to talk about EVERYTHING about it. Otherwise, conversation wouldn't be too productive now would it?

    Cheers to all,

    J-Bytes :)

I find the idea of such a private club, where you have to own the actual laptop in order to speak your mind and discuss it, very naïve. I very much value the comments from users on this forum that would never consider buying the XPS 1730 … e.g. Narnsnail gave me guidance and helped me make my decision on buying one :).

You know, if there is someone writing something childish, unconstructive crap and just being a jerk … you do not have to read it, really :p. And if you, for some reason, actually do read it, you do not have to bother about it, really :p.

I agree no forum should be in place just for owners but why so much emphasis on looks .I remember reading laptop magazine sayin how with woman buying laptops looks have become more important . One guy was saying he would be embarsed to pull out his xps 1730 out in a meeting.Who is going to pull out a 17 ingaming laptop in a meeting .9750 with glowing alienhead is very understate,x205 red black cover no gaming laptop is quiet. I guess men are just as to looks as women are . ;)

You now what, this whole thing is dumb... Post here is you want, post in the wannabe "official", I don't care. People that don't like the idea: FINE! Stay out and don't bug the people who view a thread dedicated to users discussing their specific laptop. I don't care and I don't think anyone else does.

Ok. well, you can have your troll forum. I won't waste my time in it. If I had, you might find I have valuable technical insights, but because you'd rather discuss the merits of moderated forums (not that I ever said I would be the mod, jackass) I am too busy and would rather spend my time communicating with my loved ones than people I expect to become unloved ones. Yeah, I'm a *****. The internet isn't just one thing, there is room for moderated forums, and if you're the type of person who wants to crash every party on the 'net and release the internet equivalent of stinkbombs and cobras into the place, be my guest. I'm out.

i totally understand where you are coming from. and i agree with you. the only reason i created a new "owners" thread was that that i thought the original thread was created way too early, before the release of the m1730. therefore, this brought on so many people talking about how ugly it is, etc. i LOVE negatives! that's what makes people talk about the product and criticize it and so on. it's just that the first forum seemed like it was kind of tainted by people who just saw a picture of it (before it even came out) and started beating on it.

little did i know that this would become a whole issue. it's ok though, i guess my idea was not the best decision to make. whatever thread we end up using, i can't wait for my m1730, and i look forward to sharing my thoughts and opinions on it with a great review and some screen shots!

4 gigs of memory eh? You are aware that you need a 64 bit OS to utilize all of it... Right? :
