Yes i am going to overclock it to 3.2ghz
I went to the Dell Real Site and the staff said that Dell gave the overclocked xps m1730 to Nvidia and they say that there hasnt been any problems yet.
If nvidia says there arent any problems, i am going to do it.

this thing is frickin overpriced, i wouldn't dare spend 5000 for this config, yes the processor is awsome but that is all....

at such a price i would expect the xps to have a dual 8800 sli setup+800Mhz RAM+highspeed SDD+built in 5.1 soundcard and which is haif thick as this brick

i just can't stand ppl spending so much for this crap..... its 100 times better to wait for the next intel platform which would definitely support all these, and which would for certain double the performance...... its just 8 months, u would never regret

How's the M1730? Did you run 3D Mark yet? Super Pi? HD Tune? :p Nah, don't stress yourself, just enjoy your raw power of a mobile Extreme processor (2.8GHz is insane for a notebook) and SLI 8700's. But please do give us gaming results :)

I've just ordered a Dell 1730 - 2GB ram, dual 160GB 7200RPM drives, dual 8700M GT's in SLI, 17 inch WUXGA, spare AC power and Belkin Messenger bag. It's replacing a 1720 which I am returning. The 1730 is just better bang for buck IMHO - it's going to be used for gaming and trading.

Is there a review of the 1730 yet?

Also on the DELL website it says the DVI out is a Dual Link... does this mean that I can run dual monitors off that DVI out using a special cable?

Um just the 2.2 Ghz one. Didn't think it was worth it to pay so much more for the extreme one when I already have a great desktop where I do most of my gaming. Maybe if I was alot richer! :)

The 2.2 Ghz should do me fine especially combined with the dual 8700's.

Anyone got any pics of theirs they could post? I'm also interested to see the size of the PSU that it comes with.

Oh yeh I got the grey colour and Ultimate as well.

It'd be kind of hard to order the 2.2GHz CPU (T7500) considering it isn't a configurable option w/the M1730! the lowest end one in the M1730 is T7700 (which is anything but low end)... I'd think that is what you have.

Its kinda of awkward that Asia, EU, and Australia can be configurated from the lowest config and America cannot configurate from the lowest spec

Sadly, no. Dual-Link corresponds to the number of pins (and therefore bandwidth) that the DVI port will work with.

You need that bandwidth for really high resolutions, for example, my 24" BenQ 1920x1200 won't work with anything but a Dual-Link DVI cable and compatible video card.

The attached photo pretty much illustrates what I mean.

It's good that it's DL-DVI though, so you can drive those higher resolutions on big monitors and not have to resort to D-SUB (VGA).

Finally my wait is over :D My M1730 flew into Launceston airport Wed but because Thursday was a holiday for the stupid show I was going to have to wait until today or Monday to be delivered.
Lucky for me our local courier is a mate, he saw my name on package so he dropped it in last night. Reckons I owe him a slab now lol.

They might be waiting for parts have you checked?
Even though Dell had to wait for the chassis to be built for mine, I certainly didn't wait long really so hopefully you don't either. All up it was about 10 working days. Mind you it seemed like forever lol.

Almost forgot. Don't take any notice of Dell's "online or auto phone tracking" as it's totally wrong. Actually their customer care also as according to customer care my notebook is still in manufacturing waiting for it's chassis to be made.

Online tracking says it has been "shipped" but not in Australia as yet, and the auto phone tracking says it has "arrived in the country" and nothing more. I phoned their shipping contractors and they told me exactly where mine and what was going on etc.

    Hey People,

I get a new laptop every year (Tax reasons).. I've been holding out an extra few months for the XPS..

I ordered it on the 5th of Oct, its due to arrive on the 15th..

It was due to arrive on the 11th but they had part shortages... I still don't understand how they can announce a new laptop and have part shortages within a few days. Anyway 15th is still a decent turn around.

    Ordered on the 5th
Machine was built on the 10th
Machine was shipped on the 10th
I expect it to arrive today (12) in Aus and get through customs.. or it will sit in customs over the weekend and i'll get it on monday/tues next week.

Anyway, in total it cost me $4000. The only thing i didn't really get was the blueray drive (i think its a waste) and the extreme CPU ($1000 for a cpu, no thanks :p)...

    Btw i'm Sydney, Australia.

    Cheers
    Steve

I'm curious... what are your reasons for buying $3000 laptop for gaming? Why not buy a $700 laptop for battery life and mobility, and spend the rest on a desktop with the 8800 Ultra? :D

I personally do not own the M1730, I simply enjoy discussing it. I have an Asus G2S-A1 (specs in sig) that is a powerful gamer for just $2000.00. Anyways, I'll try to answer for the other people:

    1. It is convenient to have everything PC-related on one computer rather than two.

    2. People who prefer to game while they travel and bring their gaming machines with them need a gaming notebook; and if you have the money, why not make it near to desktop-caliber?

Anyways, maybe people should just answer that for themselves, that is just my interpretation. (Mind you, I can relate since 2 grand on a gaming notebook (my G2) is quite pricey).

I've been traveling for work for the past 3 years.. just about every week.

I'm only home on weekends, if that..

So when I'm out in the sticks and no one else is around its good to be able to play a game or two.. pass the time :)

Glad to hear some of you who were told of a parts shortage have actually got theirs or had it shipped. I was told the same thing, although mine is still in production and i ordered a few days earlier (09/27) than some that have already gotten theirs... trying to remain patient :)

Like the rest of you, I too am looking forward to receiving my XPS M1730...

Oct 1 - order received by Dell
Oct 2 - work in progress
Oct 9 - manufacturing build complete
Oct 9 - ship from factory
Oct 10 - loading for export
Oct 16 - estimated delivery date (according to the system)

Had a call from the transport company used by Dell here in Sydney, Australia on Oct 10 to arrange delivery for Monday (Oct 15).

Specs I ordered: Smoke Gray, X7900 CPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, 64GB SS 2nd Drive, Audigy HD software, Microsoft Office 2007 Basic, Vista Ultimate 32-bit, McAfee 36-months OEM, 3-year warranty, AGEIA PhysX PPU.

I work from home doing share trading on the ASX. Have always preferred laptops. Looking forward to connecting the 1730 to my Dell 3007WFP-HC monitor and enjoy 2560x1600 resolution. Also the laptop gives me the freedom to trade when not at home. Yes, even on vacations!!!

Have not played any computer games for the last three years but might just have to start again. The 1730 will replace my Inspiron 9100 which I bought over 3 years ago.

Obviously I don't mind spending this much on a laptop mainly because it is a legitimate tax deduction.

    Order smooth as, so far.

Oct 11 - order received by Dell
Oct 11 - work in progress
Oct ? - manufacturing build complete
Oct ? - ship from factory
Oct ? - loading for export
Oct ? - estimated delivery date

This is a full-on desktop replacement, as well as serious upgrade...I actually am looking at current-release games now for the first time in 3 years, that's how old my hp granny rig is.

I notice some serious discrepancies in cost depending on where the machine is purchased: looks like Aus is a bit cheaper and quicker off the mark with delivery from what I'm reading here...or am I missing something?

In regards to the experience I had with my order, auto tracking and customer service reps were totally wrong. Dell was also sending me an email when my laptop left the factory too but that didn't happen either. Well I suppose they didn't because they reckon it is still there waiting for the chassis.

Continual misinformation/lies to their customers is a serious breach of Dell's duty of care to their customers.I do agree with you completely J-Bytes, Dell does have a responsibility to provide their customers with updated and accurate information.

Makes me wonder how much more proficient and reliable Dell would be if customers didn't pay until they had their systems. Orders would be completed, shipped and delivered in a few days me thinks ;)

Hmmm pretty good spec but u shud upgrade your OS to 64bit if you are going to have a 4GB RAM cuz u cant use all of it in 32bit. Give me a review for the 64GB SSD when it comes. And i thought the overclock was upto 3.2Ghz? And its also a GeForce8700M GT not GeForce8400 lol .

Go to this link for the heat review. It seems like the PC itself doesnt get hot but its design is hot

I'm a lighting Technician, this year I have already spent 7 months away from home touring Europe with various Artists. I live on Sleeper Coaches or in Hotels.
My XPS Gen2 has had heavy use every day for the last 3 years as both my work machine and entertainment/communication center.

If I bought a desktop it would just sit at home getting obsolete without me getting any benefit from it.

As soon as there is a better video card for the M1730 I'm buying it, and I'll max every option, when I'm away from home my laptop is my most important posession (apart from clean socks of course).
