It looks like the upgrade will be for WOW edition only, which leaves the rest of us hanging. Given their 8700 support I am not too happy
-
No upgrade programs. Atleast I don't see any such offers on Dell website.
I'm guessing the card itself would be around 1k at dell spare parts.
Edit:: Hmn it seems like they will offer it according to the link. Lets just cross our fingers. -
It bloody better not be.
I really want this upgrade! I may try get it through work if I can
-
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/01/29/43163.aspx?~ref=crss
My bad, it said it will also be available for WOW owners so I think we are good. -
I think that if there is an upgrading program it will be at least 700$... bc thats what if costs if you buy them new...
-
^^^
true, but will they charge more because of the techy they need to send out to install the card?
Or will they charge less and take back our 8700 card instead?
They are the main questions now!
I'd prefer to install my card myself rather then have some dirty fat techy do it. If they say it will void my warranty, I can say that they made me install the Physix processor myself, and its the same procedure to install the card anyways! -
I just hope they can fix my freez ups... Now they sent me a link with a bios update that would fix all my problems... yet is the one that came preinstalled in the system... so back to step 1....
more videos from now...

15 day old computer... -
^^^
which driver are you using??
Is SLI enabled??
I used to get freeze ups like that - mouse wouldnt move etc - when I was using SLI with Dell drivers. Running with SLI disabled cured the problem!
Ive since updated my drivers and I can leave SLI on now, but I get lock ups like that when I use Movie Maker!! So I have to disable SLI before I use movie maker!!
Anyway, silly question, but the laptop is on power right? I get lock ups more often on battery, so I always leave my laptop on power now, since it not moved anyways. -
It happens with the drivers that the dell tech told me to install from like september 2007 or so I think they are, im just following guidelines, its on power and its on xp pro sp2... The second replacement that I returned last week was giving no problems at all, but it had a wobbly base...
I hope that after 3 replacement and 3 months with issues they have at least the decency to upgrade me to 8800GTX, as I was getting the best computer, and all i got was crap. -
Ive just rang tech support.
The guy told me that Dell do not do any upgrade programs and do not sell parts like graphics cards just like that! The prick needs to get up to date!
All I want is a bloody price for the UK, and to know how Dell plan to treat their existing M1730 owners!!! -
you have 2 options...
a) f u
b) 500quid -
Have a look here.
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/default.aspx
"Back when we launched the XPS M1730, I mentioned that we would offer an upgrade option for customers who purchased their laptops with the previous-generation graphics solution, the NVIDIA 8700M GT SLI edition. The upgrade option will also be available to customers who bought the XPS M1730 World of Warcraft Edition as well." -
Has anyone noticed that the battery is rather loose when engaged in the m1730??.. i can rattle mine by pushing it with my fingers when fitted into the base and its noticable when you pick up the laptop and move it around.
Anyone else had this? Dell are sending a new one anyway? -
No problem with the battery here...
ten -
No probs with the battery here, fits nice and snug.
-
battery ok, motherboard and graphics NOT!
-
What do you use to play a bluray movie? I tried WMP and I keep getting an error code 'C00D11B1'
help! -
VLC media player should do it. If not, power DVD does pretty much everything...
ten -
Ive tried Media Centre as well, but that says that no program was found to play back the BluRay??!!
Will I still be able to use the remote control in PowerDVD? -
Just saw the news on the front page about Dell offering dual 8800's. Congrats, guys! Best of luck with your m1730's, I hope they're amazing
-
Anyone interested in buying my M1730 ? It was kind of an impulse buy with my Christmas paycheck but tbh I don't really need it or use it.
Its pretty much top of the line 1730 spec (see sig) and has 3 year next day on site warranty. Its in perfect condition, comes with the original box and XPS backpack to store it in.
Would rather sell to someone here than on lamebay. PM if interested or would like to see pictures etc.

I wonder will Dell give the correct exchange rate when the 8800M's come to Ireland / Europe.
At the moment its an extra $700 and (@ Current Rates) that would come out at €474 or £353 .
I really hope dell don't shaft the European market and round all the prices way up! -
for dell, apple, sony etc....
1 $ = 1 € -
How much u askin for it ?
-
After some reading it seems the windows media player does not support bluray or HD-DVD playback!!
What kind of crap is that?!!!
Oh well, just purchased PowerDVD Ultra from eBay - for £2.50
Just gotta wait for it to be emailed to me now........
Does anyone know if you an use the Dell remote with PowerDVD? -
Urgh. No GTX on the UK site!
Typical of Dell, the UK has nothing on the US one as well, looks so old and outdated compared to the nice US site. Not to mention we have way less options to choose from.
/angry
Get your @55 in gear!! -
bloody great news ifti. Shame about no info for UK yet tho. And a 3dmark score of 13500 isnt far off when i said 15000 anyway. A bit of overclocking and you should hit that region. Its $1000 for the gfx card in USA in a new system so that equates to about £500 here lol. Way too much. But the upgrade for current owners could be way lower i think. Cant wait for dell europe to annouce it.
-
You will certainly see alot more m1730 vids on youtube with the 8800m`s and alot more reviews and coverage and probably a review with a shootoff for the fastest laptop in a month or so. Could be close between the m17x,np 9262 and the 1730.
-
Vader, fire me an email [email protected]
ten -
I'll ring my account manager again tomorrow or on Thurs to see if he has any more news
-
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh
BluRay is working!!!!!
Got PowerDVD Ultra via eBay for £2.50, and its as sharp as can be!
Also, just to confirm, the M1730 remote control does work with PowerDVD!
Now all I want is the 8800GTX and I'll be a happy bunny!
-
Hmm, I remember PowerDVD costing a lot more when I bought it.....legally
ten -
Ummmmmm.................I thought it was legal, nothing said otherwise............hmmmm........... lol
-
??
Dell media direct should run the BD. Did you even install Dell media direct? -
Nah I left media direct, couldnt be bothered with it TBH.
Wish I had of installed it now though!!
Im not reinstalling my whole system for it though. Just got it running nice and created my Vista backup partition, so MD will have to stay gone. -
No no, I didn't mean to format etc just to get the whole thing installed.
You can just browse the CD, and install the program just for vista. I 3 partitions for my HD, and didn't want to bother w/ the media direct in preboot mode niether. Browse the CD, and look for media direct file w/ exe on it. -
Finally registered..
I had ordered the 1730 last Sat. and when i heard of the upgrade yesterday via this forum i changed my order to the below. yeah yeah i know the 2.2 gig isn't that great, but its more than what i need it for and i didn't feel like spending 5k. tell me what you think -
3d games are run mostly by the GPU, 2.2 should be enough.
-
Slow.
120GB drive is a bit on the small side imo, get the 2.4 T7700 as well. You're going to be very cpu limited. -
i'm not worried about the HD space--can always get an external. What's really the difference between the 2.2 and the 2.4---you really think its worth the extra money?
i'm interested in tests comparing the 8800 sli 2.2 and the 8800 2.8. I don't think its going to be a huge difference with today's and tomorrow's games IMO. -
For the price difference I think the 2.2 is the best, maybe the 2.4 if the price isn't too expensive but forget the 2.8, I really don't see the advantage considering it costs a grand extra on the Irish site.
-
yeah i thought this thread explained the slim chance of bottlenecking from the CPU. 2.2 will be fine.

It is kinda worrying seeing that Dell claim the 8800 can get 13,500 3d mark 06 points. I expected more, and as usual I'm sure they exagerate a bit too :/ That said I might upgrade, I'll wait though until I see the results
Also, I saw on this site that there was an upgrade option for existing owners. Does anyone have any more info on this? -

Thought I would pass this on, here is the Dell product code and SKU for the SLi version of the 8800M GTX. It might be useful when checking availability, although they may have a different code and SKU for the upgrade.
1GBNV88 [320-6384]
Update: I checked with Dell and no listing yet in the sales or replacement parts DB -
only 13.5k...that's crazy good, and I guarantee you'll hit 15k with properly optomized drivers.
I'm returning my XPS 1730 that I received last week and re-ordering without SSD drives and with the 8800 cards. For 150 dollars more then my original purchase I think I'm getting a good deal.
-
Anyone notice that when you select the 8800 cards and the blu-ray drive it says that you have a hardware issue and that you're video card isn't compatible?
Obviously a bug, but I'd hate to have my order delayed because of this, or worse yet, cancelled or something. -

Buyer's remorse kicks in! lol.
My last day to get RMA was today. -
are the 64GB Solid State Drive any good
worth getting ?
Dell gives this -
Reliability: 64GB Solid State Drive plus 200GB SATA HD (7200RPM w/ FFS) [add $650 or $19/month1]
shouldnt it be 2 of the Solid State Drives ?
