Pure. Thats exactly what I said, the screen is to dark. He obviously told me to check in the bios to make sure it was on full (which I already knew was), and that was it. New LCD next day.
And I seriously doubt I would be able to get the same system from Dell for the same price it cost on ebay (from a reseller btw, not a private purchase.) It was £1000 cheaper on ebay than the exact same spec machine is on Dells website.

Any news on the 8800 card in the UK?
-
True, but who's paying the dell rates anyways? I've got a guaranteed 12% discount through work which knocks ~$500 from the price.
For the $500 difference (assuming ebay is 1k cheaper), I'll go with a straight dell purchase. Not to mention ebay purchases may still include things like duty/shipping costs over and beyond what they're listing. -
update from Norway, 8800GTX were made available here as well this morning. Will check if there are any upgrade options, a friend has an XPS in the build process which was ordered with 8700GT. Have informed him, he will check if the build can be changed to include the 8800GTX.
His build was ordered with both heavy discounts & 15% coupon, so the price might change quite a bit as the coupon expired the day after he used it to set up the order.
Anyone else tried to upgrade an active order, did you get to keep any of your original discounts at all? -
Just rang my account manager.
Still not available in the UK as of yet, but he thinks it will be in the next few days, since when its out in the US it takes a few days for the UK stocklist to be updated...... -
I very much doubt anyone here can get £1000 ($2000) off the Dell list price simply from their Dell sales guy, and the shipping cost really isn't going to make up the difference (or you're used to real cut throat ebay sellers!)
Also, a lot of us dont have work discounts or magic coupons or whatever so we have to look around for the best deal possible. I got what I think was a bloody bargain. A £2900 laptop for £1900 in perfect A1 condition from an Ebay Dell reseller. Just because I got it from ebay doesn't mean I get any less service or decreased warranty, I get just the same as if I purchased straight from Dell itself (which I confirmed with the seller) and I have already put that to the test with Dell. Yes be careful, ebay is full of sharks but there are definitely some good deals to be had.

I agree. As long as you do your research, and dont get ripped off by the many con-artist sellers, you should be fine.
Check feedback, check past rep, check other things they usually sell (whether they usually sell Dell systems etc) and if you feel all is well, pay with PayPal and go for it.
Personaly though, I never buy stuff over a few hundred pounds from eBay. If its something expensive I like to get the full warranty and go direct. Thats just my personal preference though. -
Well, good moning everyone, in my absence I see you writing 4 pages... haha
I look at my window and see no sun, lets hope the manager puts some light in my day... XD -
Ok, I was just eating my colleagues chocolate since it is pouring down with rain and I cant be bothered to walk to the shops (hopefully he wont notice it missing) and I had an email...............I need to order another few laptops at work.
Hence Im going to put off the order for another few days until the 8800GTX card comes out, since when I order the laptops I wil be able to get a better deal on the card - may even get it for free.
Once I ordered a load of laptops from Dell, and got a D620 for free
-
Spent most of today preparing for the 8800 card by downloading some more Demos........
Ive already got UT3. Dont play online so its getting a little boring. Ive also got COD4, but Ive just downloaded the demo's for......
BioShock
Crysis
Company of Heroes
Dirt
NFS Pro Street
NFS Most Wanted
I'll probably buy Gears as well, since there isnt a Demo for that. Im interested in most of the games above, so will probably buy full evrsions when Ive tried the demo's etc
Cant wait! -
hey ifti. The card is out now to purchase with a machine brand new tho. So yea the upgrade package will follow soon. And my machine finally gone into stage 3 yay!
-
^^^
excellent, so just another day or two.
I should have it in my hands by the end of next week.
May need to take a few days off of work to game
-
I got 23% of the Internet price with my account manager on the max SLI 8700 config with 4 years of guarranty. It was 1500 EUR off the Internet price without the inconveniences of ebay:
- you miss the Dell return policy
- AND you don't have an invoice with a tax number (in Germany this is necessary to get your laptop price deducted from your income tax and it is is worth a lot of money!)
I had no work discounts or magic coupons, just the ebay offer that would have kept me from ordering from my account manager.
Having said that, the Dell margins are now lower on the 8800M GTX SLI so 23% discount or 1500 EUR won't be possible anymore.
I think 15% or 900 EUR off is still possible. -
1) The dell return policy WAS included I confirmed this with the ebay seller and Dell before purchasing.
2) The tax thing means nothing to me in the UK.
tom -
I have ordered the 8800M GTX SLI maxed config and got it only 150 EUR more than the ebay price for the same but with 8700 SLI. So I know I have a good deal.
Dell have lowered their prices, so ebay deals aren't what they used to be when the 1730 was first launched. -
It means I could make money selling to you and others on ebay. Just requires some good negotiation skills with Dell.
Cause right now, I got a better deal than ebay sellers
-
Good for you. As most of us know computer hardware prices fluctuate daily, you can wait around for ever to get the best deal. I'm sure ebay prices will catch up as they did before....etc yadda.
tom -
GTX's are in
Very tempted to order, however I think I might hold out for the penryn cpu and/or the alienware m17x.
-
I am going to order the alienware m15x with the single 8800gtx card. That $1000 card with 1GB is too much for me lol
-
Is the 8800 released in the UK yet? I cant see it on the Dell site anywhere (the UK site)
-
Thats very true. Its like anything IT related. I remember buying my first 1GB USB Memory Drive for over £400 at work. Now I can pick one up for a few pounds!
Im not too bothered with the M1730 prices, since i got mine for free anyways
-
I've already said, yes.
It's staring you in the face.

lol ifti ur very blind aernt ya its in ur face m8
-
I will just say this tho. Ive priced up me old system 1730 with a same price new 1730 with the 8800m gtx and its about £100 cheaper. You get:
8800m gtx, 7900cpu and dual hdds and vista
my old one is dual 8700, 7900cpu and 1x hdd and xp pro
So all these people who ordered last week will be kicking themselves now and have to cancel the order or get the upgrade card! -
Ram has gone from nearly £200 to £70!
All they need is the dual 320gb drives and the system is a near perfect gaming DTR. -
Yea exactly. What im talking about is dell really have excelled themselves. Theres no way you can get a similar spec UK system for the price and spec from anyone else. You will see a massive increase in 1730 machines now im well sure of it.And alot of people will be kicking themselves now at the price and spec change.
-
It's just how it is. My return period JUST passed on the day Dell released 8800 lol.
What can I say anything other than the system is pretty darn good, almost seems flawless EXCEPT THE DARN 8800 SLI which will cost us another 1k.
I just hope Dell comes out with decent upgrade program so the 8800 shows under our service tag. -
its 19h and I have no word from the manager that was supposed to be calling me today... Im gonna have to call Dell again...
-
My timing is crap. I had planned to get a new laptop in Feb, but I had a particularily boring day at work last week so decided to oder the 1730M, to give me something to look forward to. Just got word from UPS that my computer is just up the road, probably delivered in the next couple of days.
If I had waited I could bave got the 8800s...damn, Dell this is disappointing I hope they are going to have an upgrade programme.
Dazzy you got any word on your comp...or are you going to cancel and get the new one? -
^^^
why dont you return it and re-order? -
If you can return, you better return it while you can, and reorder.
I decided to keep mine because I knew I coulnd't bet better price if I had to return, and reorder. -
rofl!
I was just testing you guys man!
lol
Nah I was going on the site and just doing a search for the M1730, and that brings up the cheaper option with the 8700.
At last its here. Im gonna be ringing up my account manager tomorrow to see if he can supply just the card alone yet. I hope I dont have to wait 2 weeks for delivery!
I dont care about the upgrade program, I just want the card. -
Trouble is I am an impatient fella and after getting all hot and bothered about it's imminent arrival, the thought of sending it back with the possibility of another wait makes me think twice. I am also going away at the end of Feb and would dearly like to have it up and running before I leave. Well see if my guy at Dell will come up with something
-
^^
Im sure they will have the upgrade option in a week or so... -
So the manager was not there, and he will be calling me in 20 min or so... I am really dissapointed.
Can anyone confirm if the Complete Care coverage comes with antitheft? aka theft coverage... -
^^^
has yours been stolen??? -
hey andy. Its in PHASE 3 now bud, so i reckon tomorrow FRIDAY it will get shipped out. Its generally 24 hours after stage3 it gets shipped.
-
No, but my precision M90 had antitheft coverage, which I had to pay as an extra and I cant find it...
I had in my precision COMPLETE CARE MULTICOVER and on this one only COMPLETE CARE
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/l...~id=complete_care_inspn&~lt=popup&~series=all
here is where to check the differences. -
Yay. Just gone into STAGE 4 now. Nice one dell.
-
Think I might order a Logitech G5 mouse and get the whole lot set up when my 8800 card arrives
Im gonna have to pay for the mouse myself though I guess
-
its only $700 man, and one of those cards itself costs nearly $700 so thats actually a really good deal.
-
Ok, so I am on the phone with the manager.
He gave me two options, make one fully loaded m90 or make a new xps m1730... and talk about it tomorrow... What should i do? -
You seem like you like the M90, so why bother ask?
You know you're going to have problems with XPS.
If you ask me, I'd take the XPS, but like I said, I'm guessing the system you already have has no issues, you just like to listen to the dell tech's who don't seem like they know what they are doing.
Go for XPS w/ 8800SLI if he allows you, and I'm guessing the M90 is a refurb. -
So I have made 2 configs they cost the same
XPS
T7500
2gb ram
120gb 7200rpm
8800GTX
4 years nbd 3 years complete care
M90
T7600
2gb ram
160 gb 5400
FX3500M
4 years NBD 3 years complete care
I need solid reasons for why choosing one or not.
For once, I like the xps support line 24/7 and the lights.
I like the M90 bc of the battery, and simplicity and weight.
Help me choose please.
I need to be objective, and think about tomorrow, but also about 1 year from now. -
Just found out that dell launched 8800 SLI in m1730 at very decent price. Nice on! To be honest, i expected Alienware to launch their M17x first. Just got a couple of questions.
1. Is there gonna be an option of new intell's T8xxx and T9xxx processors some time soon?
2. "DUAL SLI 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800GTX card". Does it mean that each card will have 512mb memory or 256? Cause if it's 256x2, that would be just a waste of money then...cause for some games, which will not support sli 256mb might not be enough. -
I would get the XPS. I love mine - but be prepared for SLI issues. Run it on a single GPU and its fine. And the SLI issues will reduce over time as the drivers are improved. You also have the illuminated keyboard, the lights, and the beautiful screen.
I dont really know much about the M90, but if you are buying the XPS its probably more of a desktop replacement since its big and heavy, either that or it wont be moved around very often, hence it'll probably be connected to the power most of the time anyway.
If you need more mobility, the M1730 isnt for you. -
I believe the processor cannot be upgraded any further then the Extreme 2.8GHz processor. I read it somewhere, but Im not sure if it was a reliable source. I know that you cant upgrade to Penryn processor though.
The 8800GTX comes with 512MB on each card - so in SLI its 1GB total. -
Thank you, I really apreciate your comment, and I can see that even if I was to use only 1 8800GTX it would outperform the fx3500 which is a 7950GTX....
Its going to stay 90% on the same spot, and I will carry it to school maybe 10 times a year, and for presentation purposes only... -
"total"... most of my games say i only have 256mb...
-
Probably you mean 8700M GT?...
Because you can't possibly have M1730 with 8800M GTX by this time
