There's a guy who had it since like few weeks back through dell connection.
He has some benchmarks on it in this forum

Well, the thing is, SLI 8700GT they sell it as being 512mb, the real thing is that most of the time is accounted as 256 mb...
So it will be the same with the 8800GTX, it is supposed to be 1GB but the real thing is that most of the time it will be accounted as being 512, which btw is extremelly amazing XD! -

I just mailed this to the manager
I will let you know how it all ends. -
Thats because with the 8700m each card has 256MB. Even if you enable SLI, it will still report it as 256MB rather then a total of 512MB. SLI doesnt just 'join' the cards and give you double the memory etc.
Similarly with the 8800, although you will have a total of 1GB in SLI, games will still report it as 512MB - as its 512MB on each card. -
Does anyone have a part number for the 8800 card?
Would it be a different part number in the Uk then they have in the US? -
Performancewise, I dont really care that much, the 8800GTX is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the 8700gt... -
I hear a even if you disable the SLI for the 8800GTX, so use a single GPU, its still faster then the 8700 with SLI on! So a single 8800GTX is faster then two 8700's!
Thats awesome! -
Yes, that is true, single 8800M GTX beats SLI 8700M GT. Here are some benchmarks http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
And so for new Intel processors, I`ve just been talking with their costumers service and here is what I`ve been told:
<-I`m thinking about buying xps m1730
<-but there are new intel T8xxx and T9xxx processors out
<-so i was wondering if dell is going to put that option on M1730 any time soon?
->I'm sure once the proper testing has taken place we will roll them out.
So, i guess I`ll wait for this option (hopefully it will be soon). And hello Crysis on "Very High"!
-
That is true in general, the only question is how good are these 8800GTX mobile GPUs? If they score around 12 000 like it was written here earlier it is not 'waaaaaaaaay better' compared to 8700GT which are around 9000. About 15 000 is there the 8800s really should be.
EDIT:
writing at the same time eh DDT5
Just saw your update, seems like reviews and benchmarks tend to differ with 1000+- for both these cards -
Very High>>> Not going to happen.
-
Well, lets be realistics here, The 8700GT gave 8000 points, thats what nvidia said... now, only 1 8800GTX will give 9000 points... Its all nvidias info....
and I highly doubt you will play at high on 1920x1200... -
Benchmarks are not always accurate. You need to see the performance in the games. And as far as i know there is no detailed review of SLI 8800M GTX yet. (If there is, give a link pls
)
P.S. I`d say Crysis will go just fine on all "Very High" with resolution 1440 x 900 and anti-analyzing turned off or turned to medium. -
Plenty of reviews out for single 8800M GTX card and benchmarks along with it. Check them out to get an idea. I just read one last night on the sager 9262 (I think that was the model).
They were achieving 25-30fps on crysis with all setting high except shaders and water set to medium (something like that).
Very respectable for a single card, and you can expect a lot more performance in a sli configuration.
I can't wait to get my new machine. -
I have just read on notebook forums, someone owning the 8800GTX sli allready and getting 10k points at 1920x1200 and 30fps at crysis 1920x1200 all high....
-
here's the link if you're interested.

Over 10k 3dmark06 score with no overclock, just decent drivers installed. You will be able to hit 15k easy with proper drivers, maybe as high as 18k with overlocking (I have the extreme processor, so I get some extra points on the cpu benches).
Again, I can't wait to get my new machine rofl. The only thing that would make it perfect is faster memory, the 667MHz DDR2 is kinda crappy. -
That was probably the Sager, the article I just linked. And that wasn't Sli, just a single 8800M GTX.
single 8700M GT = ~4800 3dmark06
sli 8700M GT = ~8500 3dmark06
single 8800M GTX = ~10k 3dmark06
sli 8800M GTX = ~13.5k - 15k (dell reports the lower value, game informer reports 15k, I think a properly setup laptop will beat both of those scores). -
Faster memory would be nice, its the only thing holding the laptop down.
Has anyone noticed how there are no drivers for the 8800GTX card? On the Dell driver download page for the XPS M1730, they have the drivers for the 8700, but no drivers for the 8800 listed. Also there are no drivers for the 8800 mobile chipset on the Nvidia site either.
Will we have to use desktop 8800 drivers, or are we stuck with the drivers that Dell supply (Im assuming they supply drivers on CD with the card??) for the meantime?
As long as I get good performance in games, I dont care if I use the Dell drivers or not! As long as games perform at high settings and BluRay continues to work Im happy! -
First line to read:
System Config:
M1730: [email protected] GHz, 2g ram, 200g HDD (x2), DVD-RW, Nv 8800M GTX SLI. Vista Ultimate
OK Sli 8800GTX on an m1730...
10k,but hey, at 1920x1200 not at default 1280x1024 res... so im asuming 15k no problems on default... and remember no oc... -
wow i want, wonder when the 8800m gtx's will reach NZ
-
sergiop,
yeah that's frickin huge at that res. Very nice results. -
Hmm I didn´t know the 8700m GT in the XPS M1730 is sharing it´s video memory with the system memory. I was kind of dissapointed of this. I though there were just 256mb Dedicated no sharing at all. I might return this thing and go for the 8800m GTX. Dell didn´t say anything about shared memory.
-
They should hit the asia pacific region at the same time, which will be soon... hopefully
-
Good thinking.
-
Good Thinking
-
I would return it too. Penryn cpu too are on the way.
-
I just read a review on the pnryn processors, nothing special.
roughly a 5-10% improvement over the previous generation. The X7900 is still going to be a superior processor if you're going with that option (not in terms of battery life, but in processing power).
I can't tell you how underwhelmed I was to read about how mediocre penryn is. I think it's going to take a lot more time to shine, kind of like the ssd's.
I do like the idea of faster memory, as it addresses the weaknesses of this laptop, but the bottleneck is still going to be the gfx card.

Ha the dilemma, jus been notified that my M1730 is out for delivery (9 days from order to delivery), so should get it today yeaaaaahhh....
But do I keep it or return it for the 8800s?? Thinks I will keep it for the time being and try it out, if iI have any issues I will return it and ask for the upgrade... or maybe I shoudl return it...hell I can't think straight anymore
Getting sweaty palms...will have to cancel all appointments at work today.
Dazzy
Good to hear of your progress...maybe you will get yours by the weekend..hope so. Are you going to keep it of get the upgrade? -
To be honest, I pretty much agree. I cant see what all the hype about the Penryn processor is. Ok, it runs cooler etc, but so what? The performance isnt a massive improvement - certainly not as much as I had thought, from what I have read so far.
I think a lot of people want to go for it since its new technology. And new technology always means something better, right?? But what people fail to realise is that new technology needs time to be refined, time to settle down and reach its higher potential.
As mentioned above, the SSD is a great example. Its a new concept for notebooks to have a SSD drive. And in theory its awesome. So many advantages. But look at it in practice. Drive sizes are relatively small, and the write speeds are slower then a 7200rpm drive. It still needs time to settle in and be refined, so that the read/write speeds are really improved. But even so, many people jump at the SSD since its new technology. I for one, am glad I upgraded to a 7200rpm RAID config, and am probably getting better performance then an SSD (certainly the Sammy SSD Dell provide) anyways.
You're just like me!
When I got my XBox 360, I took 3 days off of work! Ive sold the 360 since Ive got my M1730, but since my M1730 was delivered to work, I was coming in early and leaving late waiting for it to show!! lol. Im never in early usually! I then took a few days off to spend with my new toy.
Just waiting for the 8800GTX now. Now its available in new units, Im hoping I can order one asap! Then same process - it'll be delivered to work so I'll be in every day just waiting! Ive already downloaded loads of demo's etc, and am looking at buying lots of new games - so I see some time off of work coming along.........
-
it 's not just a question of sheer power but also of less consumption (45nm vs 65nm), less heat dissipation, bigger cache, more value in 18 month time if you want to sell it.
-
Yes Ifti work does have this uncomfortable habit of getting in the way of gaming, but I have found a way of getting around it. I dress up warm and open all the windows in my office, the rest of the staff are continually complaining about the cold...difficult to notice the cold when you are in the middle of shooting all the bad guys, or a panzer division has just outflanked you!!Now my staff just close my door to keep out the cold air, and I shoot away in solitary bliss.
PS wear two pairs of socks as your feet can get very cold -
rofl! Thats an excellent idea! lol
Does anyone know any more about the upgrade program, or even if the 8800 is available to purchase as a part yet??
I really dont care for the upgrade program, I just want to purchase the card! -
It is not sharing video memory with the system, it has dedicated 256Mb memory per card.
-
^^^
Correct - just like the 8800GTX has dedicated 512MB RAM on each card. -
WHAT THE HELLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
I just got this from my account manager!!!
The card is now available, it's £638.30
Its $700 in the US - why the hell do we always get ripped off in the UK man???!!!!!
Anyways, Im ordering through 'work'
-
Ok, Just had a word with my account manager.
Apparently they get them in at a cost price of just below £600. Im assuming that the price of getting it in a newly built machine is much lower since they make the money back from other components etc? I dunno.
Either way its a complete rip off. I really do hope you guys get it cheaper through your upgrade program - whenever that is to be launched!!!
I, on the other hand, need to order some more laptops for work, so Im gonna throw it into that order and hopefully get a little discount overall.
Excited now!!!
-
Oh bear in mind we dont pay the VAT tax where I work, so the price quoted to me above is without VAT as well!!!! lol
-
Yeah ifti it looks like that premise 1£ = 1$ = 1 is correct. I have just rebuilt my M1730 witht he 8800 as standard and the price difference is about £80 more. I had to change the HD as my old option wasn't available. I think the guys making the prices are smoking their scoks or something, as this doesn't really make any logical sense...hmm maybe it does.. Dell is not coming up short.
I still haven't got an answer from my Dell rep to see about an upgrade, or even if there is one. But at £680 odd that's a bit steep. We'll see -
jeesus thats a right rip off lol. Might aswell wait and stick with the 8700 in sli and wait for a card to come down in price or get one imported from usa.
-
hey snake!. It shipped today. Walsh Western is the carrier so next delivery date is next monday 04.02.08. So ive gotta wait all weekend without my new baby no!
-
I must calm down every time the door bell rings at the reception I rush out to see if it is UPS. My receptionist has asked me to stay in my office as I am starting to scare the clients.
Whats happened to these guys according to their tracking it was 'out for delivery' at 03h14 last night. Hell I could have walked there and back a couple of times since then. Hope he has a good map as my office is in a small square and maybe he can't find it
maybe I should do some work!!
-
lol i can imagine you lol
you better take some pics and pimp your system off! -
Dazzy what great news, those systems I think were designed to give us heart attacks, I am expecting my baby today, but I am getting concerned...maybe UPS had a lot to deliver. Who knows maybe they will deliver yours today, I will hold thumbs for you
-
you will get it mate. This will be my 4th dell laptop in 4 years. They do have a lot to deliver and do sometimes come late. It will arrive im sure of it
-
hehe ifti remember when i said i wasnt getting a PHYS X PPU Card. Well ive just sent a email to tech support.Lets see what happens
-
I so hope you are right...what is the matter with me...fell like I am going on a first date with the best looking girl in the class
-
lol. Dude this machine is a gf! Have fun with the dvd drive and touching up the ports on the dvi out lol
-
^^^
rofl
Send an email in saying that it should part of the base system - at least thats what the site says. When you get down to the Ageia card its already selected and greyed out. If you havent ot the card when you chekc the laptop, just say that you thought it was part of the base unit, and hopefully they'll send you on eout like they did to me! lol
I took some pics of the installation, you may need em
http://www.essential-resources.co.uk/M1730_PPU.htm
Racing_Snake - All my orders from Dell seem to turn up at the very last point at the end of the day!!!!! -
I havent a clue when this 8800 upgrade program is launched, but Ive just emailed my account manager to get my quote for the laptops Im buying for work, along with the 8800GTX card
Just waiting for the quote and I'll order it up straight away
It pays to work in IT
-
And dont forget to handle the beast like a baby
I still wipe mine down regularly with the cleaning cloth provided
