nice ifti! Where abouts is it located. I can see a massive black shield neat the right cpu fan.Is that the physx adapter. And thats a massive gfx card and massive cpu blower tbh![]()
I bet she givs a right blow you know whathehe lol
-
lol ifti you be gentle now you dont want her getting in a mood and turning you off (sorry turning on for you
)
-
Yeah that's what worries me...i have to go home sometime and feed the kids
-
Ho hum you are right...hope the missus doesn't read this lol..otherwise I will have to set up an extention lead in the garden
-
Its the card in between the graphics card and the CPU - literally right next to the graphics card.
-
yea i thought it was. nice Heatsink with it aswell. Didnt really think it would pump out alot of heat tbh. Thats alot of stuff crammed in there. Ifti you getting the 8800m for free now then ?
-
If you wanna wait, I'll make a video of me upgrading the graphics card, and I'll point out the Physics card on that?
-
SSShhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
-
I have made a video of how to pull apart the xps m1730. I filmed it without a tripod so it is quite messy, I'll try and find a tripod and film it properly, but the bigger problem is that I cant get the video on to my computer as I cant find drivers for it on Vista, it's a digital video camera and windows movie maker doesn't recognise that it is connected.
If I can get it together, I'll put it up on youtube with the rest of my videos -
^^^
cool.
I use a HDD Video Camera, so Vista picks it up like another drive letter and I just drag the video files off of it
-
Since Im looking to upgrade to the 8800 card, Im thinking of picking up the Zalman ultra quiet laptop cooler, and also the Logitech G5 gaming mouse.
Has anyone got any experience with either of these, and do you recommend the laptop cooler, or do you think its a waste?
Ive got my system propper up by about half an inch from the back at the moment, but Im worried the 8800 is gonna produce more heat, so maybe its time for a laptop cooler just to use when gaming? -
We got the Zalman at the office under a big HP WKS used for CAD and it works flawlessly. It keeps the notebook realli cooler. The fans are quite always turned off. With the XPS 1730 it could even solve the problem of having the USB ports, and so the mouse, on the right handside, because the Zalman propper it up. Go for it.
-
How loud is the cooler, is it really that quiet? Does it take its power from USB?
Im not too bothered with the extra USB ports, as all I have plugged in at the moment is my mouse, which I use the back port for. The other ports are free and I connect and disconnect devices as and when I need them. -
Dell accessories just bloody got back to me and say they cant supply just the card alone?? What the hell?
I really dont understand what Dell's problem is sometimes. Looks like we have to wait for the upgrade program. -
Sorry to hear that, BTW good morning...
-
@ifti.
I'm out of office right now so I can't check but I would say it takes power form a USB port. About the USB ports I wasn't talking about having some more available. I was talking about the fact that the cooler prop up the all notebbok leaving more space on the right handside of the notebook in the case you use an external mouse.. -
Oh cool.
On the phone to tech support at the moment asking about the 8800 upgrade program........
EDIT: OK, he told me its a field repalcable unit so a techy has to come out to upgrade. Now he has gone to talk to his supervisor to see if they can go ahead...................
My fingers are crossed........
Now Ive been passed back to bloody sales!!!!!!!
Now Ive been passed back to technical support......
Im getting pissed off now...... -
im thinking of just hanging up now, been on hold for ages!
-
STILL on hold.
My ear is burning hot! -
im giving up, still on hold! its been about 25 mins!
-
WAIT FOR IT!!!!
I have spent 1h 10m on the waiting queue of technical support... just put the phone on speaker and do soemthing else! -
sod em, Ive hung up. I had enough.
Tried ringing my account manager, since he has given me a price and told me it is available now, but cant get hold of him. May have to wait until Monday now.........
-
Having to wait is the worst thing ever...
-
Yeah it looks like a day of waiting and disappointments....still waiting for my delivery, should have walked over to their depot and picked it up myself!!!
-
Man, I wanted to order that card today.
Is there any 3rd party place where we can pick it up??
I mean if you install it yourself, it voids you warranty. But how will Dell know? If you ever need to claim just stick the 8700 card back in! -
Oh I take that back....just arrived, but the box is damaged from the outside...hope the computer is OK...must away to play!
-
^^^
new toy for the weekend
-
what was the price he quoted you?
-
He said:
"The card is now available, it's £638.30" -
I just purchased a xps 1730 with dual 8700 sli cards. Have been reading everones problems concerning this system. Can anyone help as to what I will need to do to not be one of the ones who have all the gaming problems with this computer. I do see that some owners get pretty good frame rates, would appreciate any and all help and advice.
-
dude, thats like 1000euros... for that price you can get a decent laptop with maybe a 8600GS and T7500 2gb ram... come on, they must have been joking...
-
Most of the people seem to have problems with drivers for SLI. Here is link to a SLI guide. It says how to deal with most of the problems...
Lol, forgot to give the link
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=202449 Here it is
-
They just increased the price of SLI 8800gtx's on the canadian site. was +$720 and now today it's showing +$1000
-
Wait til they start offering the PROGRAM, not just the part.
Part will not carry system warranty, and I'm pretty sure you don't want 90 day to 1 yr warranty on a GPU that will cost you that much. -
Thx for a link, good review. But he tested it on 64-bit version of vista. I wonder if there will be a big difference on 32-bit OS. Well, at least Crytek was saying, that crysis will work faster on 64-bit systems...
But anyway, single 8800M GTX performed very well... -
I think thats probably the best way to go about this.
-
Hmm - just reconfigured my system WITH the 8800s in it and it comes out 400 quid less than what I paid for it - LOL.
I rang my account manager to upgrade and he told me to ring XPS Technical to discuss my configuration and steps going forward before we order the part...XPS Technical have gone home I think so i'll call them tomorrow.
I will definitely NOT be paying 600 quid for this card when I can configure the whole machine for 400 quid less than my current one.....I'll see what XPS Tech have to say in the morning.
And FWIW I dont see why they would offer the part before the program - if there is even going to be a program of sorts (even though we were promised it)..... -
I spoke to my account manager today, they told me again there is no upgrade program for laptops. They told me to return it and re-order the one I want, I'm just outside my 30 days and they are asking for an extension since I had two wait two weeks for a 2nd laptop since the first one didn't work.
So, this will be great if they take this one back and let me re-order.
I have a question. If I re-order this laptop what is the consensus around here for gaming.
I have the 64gb SSD drive and the 200Gb. The 64Gb opens stuff way way way faster then the 200gb drive, however I am not sure if there is any benefit to this drive for gaming once the program has opened and started? Would I be better off going Raid with 2 200Gb 7200rpm drives? Would I be better off ordring this thing with the smallest drive I can get and replacing them with something I can buy that is faster?
Thanks in advance for any input. -
Im afraid thats how stuff works this days... The computer I have is worth 400 euros off what it was on november...
I should be receiving a call from the XPS tech support manager anytime now to see how we solve my problem... -
Well, if as you say SSD drive opens stuff faster, than it will benefit you in gaming (not too much tho). I`d say the best thing to do is to install OS and games on SSD and keep all other stuff on another HD.
P.S. The gain in performance you will get does not worth paying so much for it. Raid 0 with any 7200 rps hard drives is the best option money/performance. -
For me the 320x2 5400 raid0 has the best capacity/price/speed ratio...

Anyone having any luck with Dell about upgrading their current M1730? I have spent 3 days on the phone, several hours on hold and I have gotten no useful information. Right now Dell is telling me that 8800Ms are only available at point of sale and that it may not be available for current systems for another year. I told them that is complete crap because that card is going to be obsolete in a year.
I am about to lose my mind. No one seems to know what they are talking about when you ask about upgrading. -
I feel you man. Im really frustrated at the moment. Ive been on Dell for ages today, and keep getting passed between tech support and accessory sales - both of which contradict each other - both of which I have to wait on hold for over 30 mins to get through.
I mean Im even prepared to pay for the damn card. Just make it available to the early adopters that spent an arm and a leg on getting the system in the first place, and are now being fobbed off with stories of an upgrade program that could happen at any time. Just supply us the damn card like you promised even before the M1730 was released! -
Whats the direct number for XPS support in the UK?
-
I cant help you on that as I am calling from NL.
Anyways, I spoke to he manager, their system was down 1h ago and he couldnt check the specs I sent him... So he will get back to me on monday... Hopefully. -
Im gonna have it out with my account manager on Monday as well.
He gave me a price and told me it was available, so he's gonna have to do whatever it takes to supply it to me. Im gonna let him do the chasing up rather then me hold on the line for tech support all day.
Ive just emailed him to inform him that I didnt receive the quote for it as promised today, and I would like him to chase it up first thing Monday morning.
He'll act pretty quick, considering Im still awaiting the delivery of a £21,000 order for 30 laptops.....
-
Holy crap what the hell is wrong with Dell. You pay a premium for XPS tech support and this moron is telling me the video is integrated. Then tells me that it is not upgradable.
I swear... -
Just say you'll take your business to HP or another company and he will co-operate with you
-
If he cares about his share he will call you 830am on monday
You are so evil.... XD -
just puchased a xps1730, waiting on it to arrive, I own a xps 1710 with Geforce 7900GTX card. It came with xp, I changed it over to Vista Premium 32. Is there any drivers or way to still utilize this machine or has vista ruined it? Any help will be appreciated.
